Michael Miller, CSB George Mitchell Annette and George W. Strake, Jr. Ellie and Jack Sweeney Bishop James Tamayo Lynda and David Underwood In Memoriam Cynthia Woods Mitchell Mrs. Lloyd P. Webre Students have stated that they chose St. Thomas because of its focus on educating the whole person. In the spirit of greatness we continue our commitment to lay a foundation that will nurture the intellectual, physical and moral growth of generations to come. We started the academic year last fall with great anticipation and excitement. We welcomed the Center for Faith and Culture to our main campus, where it offers courses on the dynamic relationship between our Catholic faith and American culture. His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl inaugurated the first class with a moving lecture in the Chapel of St. Basil. We were also fortunate to receive a major federal grant of $3.25 million to assist us in our initiative to reopen the School of Nursing. We are committed to make a major contribution to the Houston community by providing nurses formed by the tradition of Catholic nursing and a liberal arts education. We invite your support of this program that will provide the quality of nurses we all desire for ourselves and our families. As we develop our plans for a nursing program, our intent is to enhance all science and health-related programs. We have achieved great success in preparing our students to compete in these areas of study. Over the past five years, 82% of our pre-med students have been granted at least one medical school interview, and 67% are ultimately accepted, compared to a 42.7% acceptance rate nationwide. We believe these numbers indicate not only the success of the Pre-Medical Program but also the high quality of teaching at St. Thomas. We pass on that high quality of teaching to those who choose teaching as a career path. Innovative programming and development have led to increased enrollment and exciting offerings in our School of Education. A $2.8 million Title V Grant from the U.S. Department of Education funds the Promoting Postbaccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans Program to achieve parity among Hispanic graduate students and other underrepresented groups in retention and graduation rates. The Education Graduate Student Success Center opened last spring, and online graduate education courses began in fall 2010. We hope that you will take the opportunity to learn more about our students and the academic programs on campus. The University of St Thomas is constantly increasing its effort to reach out to all parts of our community as we find new ways to strengthen the proud legacy of the founding Basilian Fathers. Thank you very much for your confidence in our mission and your continued support and encouragement. With best wishes for a peaceful and joyful year, Dr. Robert Ivany PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY THE YEAR IN REVIEW 2009-2010 Annual Second Collection donations from generous parishioners in the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese are shared between the University of St. Thomas and the Catholic University of America: $142,866 is directly awarded to UST students. UST celebrates the return of men’s basketball to campus after nearly 25 years. The Celts claim victory in the season opener against Wiley College. Led by head coach Todd Smith, the Celts could not have returned men’s basketball to UST with a better performance. The team’s intensity matched that of a boisterous home crowd, which voiced its appreciation when junior center Ivan Earls scored on a lay-up for the team’s first basket since 1985 and a 2-0 lead. Chaired by Joe Cleary, Executive Vice President of Harvey Builders, Scholarship Tee-Up Tournament grosses more than $222,000 for the Fr. Francis E. Monaghan Scholarship Fund on Sept. 28, 2009. Event underwriters were Bank of America, Sterling Bank, Harvey Builders, BP, and Marathon Oil Company. The National Science Foundation awards St. Thomas a $575,000 grant to provide scholarships to undergraduate students obtaining degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs over the next five years. The program provides $100,000 in scholarships to 25 STEM students each year, the first scholarships being awarded for the fall 2010 semester. The University’s S-STEM Scholars Program aims to reach the diverse communities in the Houston area, and to recruit women and underrepresented groups to the STEM fields. The School of Education introduces an Off-Campus Master of Education Program in the spring 2010 semester. In January, 11 cohort groups of 181 students begin MEd courses at two locations in the Cypress-Fairbanks area. This marks a significant increase to traditional on-campus MEd enrollment. Head Coach Todd Smith leads the Celts to victory in the season opener against Wiley College as basketball returns to campus after 25 years.
