Mme. Alison Rose, The British Ambassador in Belgium It is a great pleasure to have the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir in Brussels to take part in the Klarafestival. The Orchestra dates back to 1932 and has long had an international outlook in terms of its musicians and where it has played. More recently, it was the orchestra selected to record the world’s national anthems for the London 2012 Olympics and also performed as part of Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the River Thames in 2012. The first appearance of the London Philharmonic Choir with the London Philharmonic Orchestra was at the Royal Albert Hall on 15 May 1947 when they performed the Beethoven Ninth. I am looking forward with anticipation to their performance together at BOZAR on 11 March. H.E. Mme. In English: “The sorrowful mother stood tearfully by the cross as her son hung there.” The Latin text of the Stabat Mater evokes the suffering of Mary at the foot of the Cross. It is a representation of the greatest suffering imaginable: a mother who sees her child suffer and finally witnesses his death. The Stabat Mater appeals to a deeply human capacity for compassion, even beyond its specific meaning in a Christian context. This concert will also show Gubaidulina’s sober arrangement of the last seven words uttered by Christ on the Cross, one of two at Klarafestival. Again we hear the story of Jesus’ death and again his words conjure up human emotions that are at once recognisable and tragic. “My God, why have you forsaken me?” These words may very well be the purest embodiment of the loneliness of existence, of floating through life, abandoned in the emptiness like a particle in space, without any footing or allegiance, trapped in what Sofia Gubaidulina refers to as the ‘staccato of life’. Sofia Gubaidulina Sieben Worte (1982) Boisterous tripe instead of veritable musical innovation is how the Soviet regime described the music of Sofia Gubaidulina in 1979. The communist state deemed the Russian composer’s creations ‘irresponsible’. Put differently, the innovative merit of Gubaidulina’s music did not fit the regime’s ideology. Yet Gubaidulina persevered, especially after her introduction to Dmitri Shostakovich in 1959. He encouraged her to do what she does well and continue along ‘her mistaken path’, making it accessible. Sofia Gubaidulina is one of the most important composers of our time. Her compositions mix philosophical, spiritual, religious and poetic ideas which give the music a mystic power. Gubaidulina’s style is unique and difficult to shoehorn into the usual categories. She draws inspiration from the polyphonic stratification of Josquin des Prez, the dodecaphony of the Second Viennese School and Wagnerian drama. At the same time, she also absorbs Russian and Asian folk music. However, Gubaidulina’s greatest source of inspiration is spirituality. Without the power of her beliefs she would never have found her way to composing: “There is no more serious reason for composing music than spiritual renewal”. Gubaidulina’s musical language was strongly influenced by her third husband, musicologist and conductor Pyotr Meshchaninov. He made her realise that the 12 tones in an octave are insufficient on which to build a story. According to her husband, an octave is comprised of 72 units and Gubaidulina uses this in her creative process. Two successive tones (microtones) are so close to each other that they simultaneously sound the same and different. For the rhythm she often uses the Fibonacci sequence in which every number is the sum of the two previous ones. This explains the rhythmic complexity and the absence of a steady pulse in Gubaidulina’s work. The result is an abstract musical language, yet one that can be understood on an intuitive level. Sieben Worte Religion is the starting point of the Sieben Worte for cello, bayan (a Russian button accordion) and strings from 1982. The title refers to the final words that Jesus spoke from the Cross. Gubaidulina states that she carries the life and story of Christ in her heart. She says that it may very well be the most important thing in her life and the Sieben Worte play a very big part in that. This work is all about the Cross, for Gubaidulina a symbol of opposing forces: past versus present and human versus superhuman. In the composition this becomes cello versus bayan. The two solo instruments challenge each other as well as complement each other. Also in their interaction with the strings, the soloists are somewhat at odds with a glissando of the strings cutting through long, persistent cello notes. The same kind of effect is achieved with the bayan by playing neighbouring buttons. The four Gospels refer to a total of seven sentences Jesus supposedly uttered before his death. These serve to structure Gubaidulina’s Sieben Worte. One sentence is attributed to each part. In the first part, Vater, vergib ihnen, denn sie wissen nicht, was sie tun, the sounds of the cello and the bayan are indistinguishable. The instruments melt together into one timbre. Strings imitate the experiment of the soloists and assume a thin melodic form. This image continues into the second part. Together, the cello and the bayan continue to look for the ultimate, sometimes with strong outbursts. The middle part, Mein Gott, mein Gott, warum hast du mich verlassen? is the centre of the composition. The contrast between soloists and strings gradually dissipates with both groups exchanging thematic material and providing a rich sonority. Like one great lamentation (‘why have you abandoned me?’), all instruments seek comfort with each other. Silence functions as spiritual contemplation. The process of imitation and integration is further developed in the three following parts. In Mich dürstet the two soloists play a fragment from the Sieben Letzte Worte by Schütz. The accordion gets entangled in its own game, as it were, and the cello literally goes beyond the instrument’s limits by playing on the other side of the bridge over which the strings are suspended. In the seventh part, the process of exchange and transformation is completed. The solo instruments have reached a new world and are trying to find their place in it: Vater, ich befehle meinen Geist in deine Hande. E Klarafestival Erbarme dich 9 24.3 2016 P5 Alexander Zemlinsky Psalm XXIII, op. 14 (1910) Alexander Zemlinsky started his music career with strong credentials. His first chamber music, which he composed at the age of 22, was recommended to the coveted publisher Simrock by Brahms. In the years that followed, Zemlinsky conducted the amateur orchestra Polyhymnia where he became acquainted with Arnold Schönberg, in the role of cellist. The meeting led to a life-long friendship and a mutual source of inspiration. Still, Zemlinsky missed the qualities to set himself apart in Vienna, city of stars. Overshadowed by personalities greater than himself, Zemlinsky produced a modest but very solid oeuvre. The three psalm adaptations are the only sacral music Zemlinsky ever wrote. Psalm 23, from 1910, is a musical impression of the psalm in which God is compared to a shepherd: just like a shepherd stands guard over his sheep, God protects every individual on earth. This God ‘allows everybody to rest in great meadows, leads them to fresh water and makes whole every fearful soul’. The music emanates a sense of contentment and has a pastoral character: a solo for oboe depicts the idyllic landscape, a powerful horn section evokes the atmosphere of the hunt and of excitement, and exotic instruments (percussion, celesta, glockenspiel and two harps) refer to nature as well. For the melodies, Zemlinsky drew from memories of his youth: as the son of a Jew, the composer spent much time in the synagogue where he learned how to play the organ and was introduced to Jewish chanting. Zemlinsky was also susceptible to contemporary influences: the hand of Brahms is clearly recognisable in the choral parts. Karol Szymanowski Stabat Mater (1925-1926) During the First World War, Karol Szymanowski retreated to his family’s estate in Tymoszowka, nowadays Ukraine. There, he composed a great deal of chamber music, his Third Symphony and his First Violin Concerto. The atmosphere of these compositions is imbued with a Wagnerian, late-romantic idiom with modern French timbres along the lines of Ravel and Debussy. The October revolution of 1917 ended the composer’s quiet and isolated life. The crisis aroused fundamental questions in him: what was his social role as a composer? What did his music need to sound like in a new political climate? After all, Poland had now become independent. The national pride had been found again, a turnabout that also showed in Szymanowksi’s music. The composer decided to study the musical heritage of his country. In 1992, he travelled into the Tatra mountain range where he went looking for folk idioms of the Góral or highland music. Szymanowksi’s late-romantic style made way for Polish folk music. It was during this search for authenticity he composed Stabat Mater. The first ideas for the Stabat Mater took shape in 1924 when Szymanowksi received a large sum of money from the patron of music Winnaretta Singer, better known as Princess Edmond de Polignac. She commissioned a work for choir, soloists and orchestra along the lines of ‘a Polish requiem’. However, the contact between Szymanowksi and the Princess waned as a result of which the plans were never carried out. The idea resurfaced a year later when an industrialist from Warsaw, Bronisław Krystall, commissioned a work in honour of his deceased wife. During that same time, Szymanowksi went through a difficult period himself. His niece Ala had died in an accident. Szymanowksi was comforting and supporting his sister hence the choice for a Stabat Mater with the theme of a grieving mother in the commission for the entrepreneur. To make the work even more personal and direct, the composer used a Polish translation of the medieval poem. In six small movements, emotions of mourning and hope take turns. As an antidote for the pain, the orchestra opens in the first part with restrained and soft melodies. The timbre is rather dark, orchestra and choir form a safety net for the grieving mother. The baritone in Quis est homo qui non fleret calls for compassion – who is not moved by the image of a mother whose soul is torn? The calm returns in Eia mater fons amoris. This is where the contralto starts a moaning dialogue with the clarinet. The soprano and the women’s choir support her with the words Matko, Matko (Mother, Mother). The atmosphere changes, the part is given a dark, ominous undertone. The low bass registers allow you to partake in the pain of the loss. The sacral dimension of the Stabat Mater is clearest in the fourth part. The homophony in this passage refers to the church songs that were a great inspiration for the composer. The fifth part, Virgo virginum praeclara, opens with a vigorous baritone, accompanied by choir and orchestra, and leads to a second climax. As the mediator between the worldly and the otherworldly, the baritone asks not to burn in purgatory. The human voice humbly asks for a heavenly life after death. The floating melody – which, according to Szymanowksi himself, is the most beautiful one he ever composed – dissolves in a great major chord. Heaven is attained.
