Cunningham walk-off homer
leads Deltaville past Mariners
by Gary Williams
and Stephen Blue
With two outs in the bottom
of the 9th inning and the score
tied, Dave Cunningham hit a
walk-off solo home run, capping a wild 13-12 Deltaville
Deltas victory Friday night
over their in-town rival, the
Middle Peninsula Mariners.
The shot capped a 5-run
rally for the Deltas, helping
“The Battle for the Ballpark”
live up to its hype.
Middle Peninsula took the
first lead in the back-and forth
game when Trey Powell hit a
two-run double in the top of the
second inning. Luke Saunders
followed with an RBI double
and later scored on a single by
Travis Crump.
Deltaville answered with
a run in the bottom half of
the inning on a sacrifice fly
by Jimmy Denny. After two
innings, the Mariners led 4-1.
The Deltas brought home
two more runs in the bottom
of the third. First baseman
Neal Hogge drew a basesloaded walk and Ryan Wiggins
grounded into a run-scoring
fielder’s choice to cut the Mari-
Deltas runner Billy Funk slides to avoid a tag by third baseman Trey Powell of the Mariners
in the first inning of Deltaville’s 13-12 on Friday.

Wiggins would tie the game
at 4-4 three innings later in the
6th, scoring on a Dustin Felvus
single.

Deltas down Storm; battle
Astros, Pirates this weekend
by Stephen Blue
This weekend marks the
final weekend of the regular
season for the Deltaville Deltas
as they close the door on their
2008 campaign with a pair of
home games this weekend at
Deltaville Ballpark.
On Friday night, the Deltas
will host the defending league
champion Peninsula Pirates.
This will be the final game of a
3-game season series with the
Pirates, and the teams have split
the previous two games.
On Saturday, the Gloucester
Astros visit the Deltas. Each
of the three previous games
between the two teams have
been decided by one or two
runs, with the Deltas capturing
6-4 and 2-1 decisions, and the
Astros winning 2-1 victory.
Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
at Deltaville Ballpark.
On Sunday, the Deltas play
their final regular season game
against the Hampton Roads
Rams at Charles Brown Park in
Yorktown at 4 p.m.

inning. With Matt Brown on
third and one out, Wiggins
hit a deep fly ball to center,
which was caught, but allowed
Brown to tag and score, giving
the Deltas their first lead of the
game, 5-4.
The lead would be only temporary, however. The Mariners’ bats came to life in the
top of the 8th inning as they
pushed across 7 runs on 4
hits, 3 walks, and 2 hit batsmen. Bryan Hannum pushed
across the first run with an RBI
single.
Middle Peninsula then loaded
the bases for L. Saunders, who
crushed a 3-run double to right
center. The Mariners reloaded
the bases and Moore followed
with an RBI single. Two more
runs were walked in, and when
the inning finally ended Middle
Peninsula held an 11-5 lead.
Deltaville
immediately
responded in the bottom of the
8th with 3 runs on 3 hits, a pair
of walks, and a crucial defen-
sive error, cutting the Mariners’ lead to 11-8.
Middle Peninsula’s Drew
Hooper answered in the top
of the 9th, plating L. Saunders
with an RBI single and stretching the Mariners’ lead to 12-8.
Deltaville’s final rally in the
bottom of the 9th began with
a double by Denny, and Felvus
being hit by a pitch. The bases
were loaded on a Billy Funk
walk, and Chris King hit a sacrifice fly to score Denny.
Brown then tied the game at
12-12, crushing a 3-run home
run to left center field. Cunningham then followed with
his walk-off home run, completing the Deltas’ dramatic
rally.
A large crowd was on hand
to see the two teams that call
Deltaville Ballpark home
square off. Both teams had

Mariners headed
to VBL title game
by Gary Williams
The Middle Peninsula Mariners (16-4) won their first two
games of the Virginia Baseball
League playoffs to advance to
the tournament championship
game this Sunday, July 27, at 1
p.m. at Essex High School.
In Sunday’s title game,
the Mariners will face the
Tappahannock Tides, Richmond Rams or Richmond
Astros. With a win, the Mariners would claim their first
ever Virginia Baseball League
Championship.
Middle Peninsula is the only
unbeaten team left in the doubleelimination playoff, and would
have to lose twice Sunday to be
denied the crown.
On Saturday, Middle Peninsula defeated the Tappahannock
Tides 12-1, and on Sunday they
downed the Richmond Rams
4-3.
Mariners 12, Tides 1
On Saturday night the Mariners began their playoff run
with a 12-1 victory overthe
Tides. Shortstop Blake Williams scored the only run for
the Tides in the top of the first
on a home run to center field.
Williams has hit a home run
for the Tides in every Mariners’
home game against the Tides
the past two seasons.
The Tides did not hold their
lead for long as Middle Peninsula scored 2 runs in the bottom
of the first. Travis Crump led off
with a walk and was followed
by a James Moore single.
Luke Saunders then stepped
to the plate and delivered a tworun double, putting the Mariners up 2-1.

Swim-a-thon to benefit pool
On Saturday, August 2, from
1 to 3 p.m. there will be a swima-thon at the Deltaville Pool to
raise funds for the pool. This
event is the community service
project of Urbanna Oyster Festival Queen contestant Kaytlyn
Miller.
Participants in the swim-athon will be the Deltaville Swim
Team, Middlesex YMCA, members of the Lower Middlesex
Volunteer Fire Department;
Army members (waiting on
response); and anyone from
the community who would
like to help raise funds for the
Deltaville Pool.
All are welcome to participate.
Miller chose to host a swima-thon because she has been
swimming on the Deltaville
Swim Team since she could
swim, and she wanted to try to
help the Deltaville Pool raise
funds for all it has given her,
and to benefit the community.

Crump got the long ball working in the bottom of the third. T.
Crump hit a solo shot to center
field, and later in the inning S.
Crump hit a 3-run home run to
nearly the same spot. This put
the Mariners up by a final score
of 12-1.
Matt Tiller earned the win for
the Mariners. Bryan Hannum
used his “Eephus pitch” to
record the final out of the
game.
Offensively for the Mariners,
L. Saunders had 2 doubles, 5
RBIs, and a walk; S. Crump,
home run, double, 4 RBIs;
T. Crump, home run, RBI, 2
walks; James Moore, single;
Bryan Hannum, a double, 2
singles, an RBI; Hooper, single
and RBI; J.C. Mosicki, walk;
Dallas Wagner, walk.
Mariners 4, Rams 3
On Sunday Middle Peninsula
took on the Richmond Rams
who were the other undefeated
team left in the tournament.
The temperature was near 100
degrees and the Mariners were
beginning to feel the effects of
a 3-game weekend.
Richmond took a 1-0 lead in
the first inning on a sacrifice fly
after an error and a walk.
Things then began to get
interesting for the Mariners
when starting pitcher William
Saunders was forced to leave
the game because of a large
cut on his right index finger.
Middle Peninsula turned to
Jonathan Somers to take on the
pitching duties. The first batter
Somers faced hit a run-scoring
single to left to give Richmond
a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning,
Somers had to leave the game

the Mariners to this Sunday’s
championship game.
with a heat-related illness and
the Mariners went to recent
addition Dallas Wagner to finish
out the game.
The Mariners struggled at the
plate during the first 5 innings
as they scattered 3 hits and did
not push across a run.
The Rams padded their lead
in the top of the sixth when a
run scored on a wild pitch and
they looked poised to win and
advance to the title game.
Middle Peninsula, however,
had other ideas. The Mariners
took advantage of 4 consecutive
walks in the bottom of the sixth
to push across a run and load the
bases for Hannum, who then hit
a 2-run single to leftfield which
tied the game 3-3.
After a scoreless seventh, the
game went into extra innings.
Richmond got a runner to third
in the top of the eighth but could
not bring him home.
T. Crump stepped up to the
plate for the Mariners in the
bottom of the eight and ripped
a single to center. Crump then
stole second base, putting himself in scoring position with one
out. After James Bierlein flew
out to deep center, Luke Saunders came through again with
a single down the left field line
scoring Crump from second.
This gave Middle Peninsula a
4-3 win and a berth in the Virginia Baseball League Championship game.
Over the three games this
weekend for the Mariners, L.
Saunders went 7 for 10 with
4 doubles, 11 RBIs, and two
walks.
“Luke has just been on fire
this summer.” said Mariners
manager Garland Harrow. “He’s
a great ballplayer and I hope he
stays hot for the championship
game”
Wagner picked up his first
win as a Mariner against the
Rams. He hurled 5 2/3 innings
and yielded no earned runs
and 3 hits with 7 strikeouts.
Saunders went 1 2/3 innings,
allowing 2 runs on no hits and
5 walks. Somers pitched 2/3 of
an inning.
Offensively for the Mariners,
T. Crump had 2 singles, a walk,
and 2 stolen bases; Bierlein,
walk; L. Saunders, single, 2
RBIs, walk; Hannum, single, 2
RBIs, walk; David Smiy, single;
Moore, single, stolen base; and
J.C. Mosicki, walk.

The July meeting for Hands
Across Middlesex was held at
Urbanna Baptist Church on
July 20. Thanks go to the members of that church for their
generous offer for us to use
their building for our meeting.
The meeting was well
attended and there were many
new faces in the crowd. It is
great to know that folks are
interested in our mission.
The business meeting covered the usual reports from our
various committees. Everything is up and running!
The highlights of our session
were:
(1) We may be moving our
Clothing Barn and Furniture
Barn to a more attractive location soon. When this takes
place, we will be sure to let you
know.
(2) Our Food Bank is in good
shape, but we are always looking to replenish items as they
get distributed to those in need.
So, please keep those canned
foods coming.
(3) We are hoping to supply
a new community service soon.
This will involve making life
safer for those in our area who
suffer from memory loss and
other forms of dementia. More
news will be coming to you
on this as the plan gets more
established.
(4) The 2009 Gala will be
held at Bethpage Community
Center on March 14. Everyone
who was there earlier this year
can attest to the fact it was a
great event. Mark your calendars!
We thank all of you so sincerely for your continuous support by giving of your time,
money and food items.
Next month’s meeting will be
held at St. Paul Baptist Church
in Jamaica on August 17 at 3:30
p.m. The public is invited.

Health Clinic Executive Director Jean Nelson.
Campbell has been a key
supporter of the clinic since its
founding in 1993, and for the
past 15 years has made multiple donations annually. These
include thousands of dollars
toward operating funds, donations of meals for the evening
clinic volunteers, and financial
support for the footings and
foundation of the clinic’s first
home on DMV Drive.
The Dental Clinic was
opened in 2004 and operates
Wednesdays through Fridays

volunteer dentists who oversee students from the Virginia

Eight attend Knights of
Pythagoras encampment
The Knights of Pythagoras
Summer Encampment program was held last week at
Virginia State University in
Petersburg and eight young
men of Middlesex participated
in the annual event.
This year’s theme was “Teach
One, Reach One, is a Terrific
Notion.”
Assistant state director William Bagby of Middlesex said
this year’s camp was the “best
in years.”
The local chapter of the
Knights of Pythagoras is
sponsored by Bethlehem Star
Lodge 249 in Saluda. The purpose of the Knights program
is “to lead young men into the
future,” said Bagby.
Several Middlesex youngsters received honors. Carnell
Bagby and Dameicrio Jones
received education achievement certificates, and C. Bagby
also received the best athlete
certificate for his age group.
Jones and C. Bagby also
were installed into “the most
venerable grand knight mentor
program,” which is designed to
teach and stimulate mentoring
of the participants’ peers.
The boys took classes on
oratory, first aid, sex education, bowling, basketball, football and swimming.
This is the 12th year that
Bethlehem Star Lodge 249
has sponsored a group to the
encampment program. W.
Bagby extended special thanks
to David Harmon, superintendent of the Middle Peninsula
Regional Security Center in
Saluda, and Captain Denise
Copeland for their assistance.
Also, he thanked owners of
Urbanna Exxon who allowed
the group to hold a car wash/
bake sale on their property
to raise funds toward camp
costs.

Family Boatbuilding Week,
July 20-26.
We have a trove of builders
braving the heat to create 12 by
14 foot Wright skiffs.
By the time you read this,
these beauties should be taking
shape and primping for the big
race. Our time line is: completed boats launched Friday;
a rowing race on Mill Creek at
10:30 a.m. on Saturday; with
awards afterwards—leakiest,
fastest, etc.—and a fish fry at
noon ($10 for visitors). After
all of that, the builders can take
home their own dream-boats.
We hope to have the best
boats ever for this our sixth
year of family boatbuilding.
Got to dash! I’m head cheerleader for the teams.

YMCA continues signup for fall soccer
The Middlesex Family YMCA is excited
to announce that soccer registration has
opened for the fall season. This year the
season will begin earlier and will last until
through the Oyster Festival. All teams will
have a minimum of eight games and the goal
is to have all games played in Middlesex. The ages for the soccer league will be
3 to 18. Ages will be divided up into five
different age groups to ensure the safety
of the youth. The divisions are ages 3-5,
6-8, 9-11, 12-15, and 16-18. All teams
will practice once per week and will have
games mostly on Saturday mornings and
early afternoons. “My goal this season is to have over 100
youth in the 9-11 division so we can play
all the games at home,” said Clark Laster,
YMCA program director. “However, we
will still play surrounding counties in the
tournaments.”
The cost of the program is $30 for members and $50 for program participants.
With the program and with the Guardian
Scholarship Fund, individuals are eligible
to get financial assistance to ensure their
child can play in the league. The cost of
the league covers the uniform, socks,
shorts and all the soccer balls needed for
the program. Furthermore, the season ends
with a banquet for all the youth where they
will see a slideshow, receive awards, and
celebrate the season.
The Middlesex YMCA also has programs throughout the summer. The day
camp program lasts from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Monday through Friday. The cost of the
program is $80 for members and $95 for
program participants. Like all programs
there is financial assistance that helps
ensure that all youth can take part in the
program. For any questions on these or other programs at the YMCA, contact the Middlesex
Family YMCA at 776-8846.

feature at motor speedway
When the green flag dropped
last Saturday only Walker
Arthur of Forest had a chance at
a $25,000 payday at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway
in the Victory Lap Late Model
$25,000 Challenge presented
by BB&T.
When the checkered flag
dropped, however, that quest
fell one spot short as Tom
Cohick of Gloucester led flagto-flag in taking round two
of the Late Model Challenge
series over Arthur, who finished second.
With the victory Cohick now
joins Arthur with a chance at
a $15,000 bonus. If one of the
two drivers can sweep the next
two rounds of the series they
will pick up the hefty payday.
The next two rounds are scheduled for August 2 and 30.
Rounding out the top five
were Scott Adams, Austin
Hubbard and Stephen Evans.
Ben Bowie picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series
Rookie of the Race Award with
his sixth place finish.
In other action on Truckin
Thunder/Revere Gas Night,
Roger Jamerson of Mechanicsville picked up the win in the
Truckin Thunder Sportsman
25-lap feature.
In the New Generation
Racing Sprint Car 25-lap feature, Mary Anne Williams of
Chester took home the victory.
In the Budweiser Modified
25-lap feature, rookie Matt
Marshall of Stuarts Draft held
off Bret Hamilton of Powhatan
in a thrilling finish to take the
win in a photo finish. Daren
Bolac of Moyock, N.C., also
set a new track record with a
lap of 16.998 seconds.
Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor
Speedway returns back to
action Saturday, July 26, to host
Budweiser/WFLS “Jamaican
Me Crazy” Night. Take a trip
to Jamaica (Virginia) and have
the time of your life. Any fan
wearing their favorite Hawaiian Beach Shirt will be admitted free.
The Victory Lap Late
Models, Budweiser Modifieds,
New Generation Racing Sprint
Cars and Limited Stock Cars
will be in action.
Spectator gates open at 4
p.m. On-track activities begin
at 6:30 p.m. with hot laps.
