The Middlesex High boys
varsity basketball turned in one
of its better performances in
recent weeks in a 74-55 road
loss to Tidewater District leader
Colonial Beach on Monday
night.
The Drifters led 50-39 at the
end of three quarters but MHS
guard Sean Sutherlin hit backto-back 3-pointers with four
minutes to play to bring the
Chargers to within four points.
Middlesex ended up having to
foul toward the end of the game
and the Drifters pulled away in
the final minutes.
“We actually played better
than we have for the last few
games,” said MHS coach Neil
Bailey. “Colonial Beach is a
very difficult place to play and
we gave them all they wanted.”
Michael Bess led the Chargers with 16 points, including
two 3-pointers, Malcolm Ward
had 15, and Michael Eades
contributed 9 and 10 rebounds.
Sutherlin finished with 6
points, Nigel Rich 4, Cody
Hunter 3, and Davonne Bryant
2.
T.T. Carey led Colonial
Beach with 31 points and
Dylan Farinet added 23.
Last Friday at MHS the Chargers had trouble finding good
shots and fell behind 18-3 in
the first quarter in a 71-54 district loss to King William.
The Cavaliers increased their
lead to 44-23 at the half behind
the torrid shooting of Jamar
Carter who finished with 26
points, including five 3-pointers.
Ward led MHS with 13
points, Bess had 12, Hunter 10,
Rich 8, Bryant 4, Sutherlin 3,
and Eades and Scott Payne 2
apiece.
On Tuesday night at MHS,
the Chargers downed King and
Queen 55-47. MHS established
a 30-23 halftime lead and were
up 50-33 after three quarters.
Ward paced MHS with 21
points, Bess had 15, Hunter 8,
Bryant and Fletcher 5 apiece,
Eades and Matt Duke 2 apiece,
and Ruffin Creekmore 1.
The Chargers (3-5, 5-13) are
at Mathews this Friday, Feb.
6, and at West Point on Tuesday, Feb. 10, in their final two
games of the regular season. JV
games begin at 6 p.m. and varsity games begin at 7:30 p.m.

Starter Division
The Starter Division (ages
6-8) is entering the second half
of the season and the youth are
performing better each week.
“We have tried to progress them
through the league to ensure
they have the opportunity to be
successful,” said division director Clark Laster. “This week we
called everything from double
dribbles to reach-in fouls. This
division’s purpose is to prepare
them for the next level, and I
truly believe they have the tools
to be successful in the future.”
The games began with the
Lawyers Title Celtics taking on
the Wet Paint Red Rhinos. The
Celtics were led by the strong
offensive play of Ben Driggers
and Seth Wilson and the defensive presence of Kyle Smith
and Amber Daughtry.
The Red Rhinos also had
solid play on both sides of the
ball. This week there was notable improvement from Cameron Ward and Chloe Smith,
while Darius McIntosh and
Cole Ruark set the up-tempo
pace of the game.
The second game featured
the Middlesex Rotary Hornets
and the Comfort Inn Raptors.
The Hornets were led by the
offensive talents of Amber Self
and Blair Pausic, while the
defense was led by Brandon
Ward and CJ Gainey-Battle.
The Raptors were led by
the offensive production of
Adam Smith and Joseph Sears.
On defense, Avary Payne and
Amber Edwards were forces to
be reckoned with.
Special thanks goes the Brad
Norris and the Middlesex High
School players for allowing
both the YMCA Cheerleaders
and Little Dribblers to attend
Pack the Gym Night, and for
also allowing the Middlesex
Youth Basketball League the
opportunity to showcase its
Starter Division during halftime of the game.

Puppets teach Aylett students
about life on Galapagos Islands
On Jan. 15, Aylett Country
Day School hosted the Barefoot
Puppets performing “Galapagos George.” This show was
inspired by the true story of
an actual tortoise from Pinta
Island in the Galapagos.
The students learned about
George’s birth, growth and were
introduced to many unusual
animals of this unique environment, including sea turtles,
Sally-Lightfoot crabs, marine
iguanas and, everyone’s favorite, blue-footed booby birds.
The puppeteer, Heidi Rugg,
used rod puppets and hand puppets that she designed and built.
The stage was designed to look
like an island in the Galapagos
archipelago and was created
by Rugg. This enjoyable show
was full of music, laughter and
fun.

month’s quote: “All is ready if
our minds be so.”
This month we have displayed a wide range of biographies on top of the shelves
to highlight the many varied
people and even animals that
the students could read and
learn about.
On Monday, March 9,
“mARch madness” will start.
The students in each reading class will read and take
Accelerated Reader quizzes
for the first week in a bracket
style single-round elimination
beginning with “the sweet sixteen.” The eight classes with
the highest Accelerated Reader
average will move on to the
next round.
Seated from left above are Darlene Carter, Daphne Guill,
Celia Collier, Vicki Davis and Judy Bartholomew; standing
from left are Bea Faulcon, Jamie Somerville, Jennifer Hogge,
Amy Stamm, Nicole Huntley and Terry Rainier.
Teachers, staff members
honored at middle school
Teachers of the Month and
Seahawks of the Month have
been selected at St. Clare
Walker Middle School for the
first semester.
Teachers of the month are
selected by the principal to
honor teachers who go above
and beyond expectations to
meet the needs of students at
St. Clare Walker.
Seahawks of the Month
honor members of the support
staff who also go the extra mile
for students.
Honorees include: September, Terry Rainier, Bea Faulcon
and Brenda Lomax, Carolyn
Burse and Darlene Carter;
October, Judy Bartholomew
and Vicki Davis; November,
Daphne Guill and Celia Collier; December, Nicole Huntley
and Jennifer Hogge; January,

Aylett to join
WWBT 12
WeatherBug
Schools Network
WeatherBug, the leading
provider of live, local weather
information,
announced
recently that Aylett Country
Day School has joined the
WeatherBug Schools Program.
The school has installed a
new WeatherBug tracking station and will be able to provide
weather data for the meteorological team at WWBT 12,
Richmond, to broadcast online
and on-air. The tracking station
will also be used to enhance the
school’s curriculum using the
WeatherBug Achieve program.
The tracking station and
accompanying
WeatherBug
Achieve software suite were
funded by the school with
donations from friends and
family of the school. The grant
from WWBT 12, proposed
by Chris Gresham, will allow
Aylett Country Day School to
more effectively understand
the science of meteorology.

WeatherBug Schools Program,

Chinese lesson
As a culminating activity for a social studies unit
examining cultures and traditions around the world,
Kelly Antonio’s first-graders
at Chesapeake Academy
recently used paint brushes
to transcribe Chinese greetings using Chinese writing
characters. With painstaking
care, classmates wrote the
symbols for “Gung Hay Fat
Choy,” which translates as
“Happy New Year!” Above,
Harry Lee (left) and Chas
Faulkner (right) get help
from their teacher, Kelly
Antonio, while transcribing
Chinese greetings into Chinese characters.

Local GOP invites teens
to join Student Network
Lee Davis, chairman of the
Middlesex Republican County
Committee, announced this
week creation of a Republican
Party of Virginia Student Network for teens aged 13 to 18
who would like to get involved
in the political process.
With elections for the Governor of Virginia and members
of the State Legislature coming
up this November, youngsters
who are approaching voting
age can learn about the electoral process and how they can
take part in it.
Young people are the fastestgrowing segment of the population. By 2010, half of those
now 13 to 18 years old will be
able to vote.
Middlesex County and the
First Congressional District
are heavily Republican, as
last November’s local results
showed, and students here can
most readily influence the local
political scene by learning
about the Republicans and participating in that party’s affairs,
said Davis.
To participate in the network, students can go to http://
rpvnetwork.ning.com They can
view a video “The American
Form of Government” and, if
they like, join the Student Network.

Adult Volleyball
The adult volleyball program
has been a big hit as six teams
from the area were formed in
a fun recreational volleyball
league.
“All of the YMCA leagues
are to give adults something
fun to do once a week,” said
program director Clark Laster.
“Often we focus all of our
energy on the youth, and we
want to ensure that adults have
activities throughout the year
as well.”
The first game in the league
was between CP Anderson
Trucking and Deltaville Boatyard. CP Anderson Trucking
came ready to play and won
three straight games to take the
match in record time. Anderson
Trucking was led by the strong
play of William Glenn, Jackie
Taylor and Alan Hunt.
Deltaville Boatyard also
had strong all-round play and
was led by Adrienne Hackett,
Stacey Moore and Amanda
Schroeder.
The second game featured
Norton Yacht Sales against
Wachovia Securities. Norton
Yacht Sales won the match
three games to one. Norton
Yacht Sales was led to victory
by Amy Sands, Heath Bray and
Jerry Duke.
Wachovia Securities was
led by Jennifer Harrow, John
Michos and Richard Griffin.
The final game was a nailbiter as Allen Group Inc.
took on the Mathews Family
YMCA. Allen Group would
not be denied the victory as
it rallied back from being two
games down to take the match
three games to two. The Allen
Group was led by Rob Makulowich, Kristin Harris and Wayne
Hogge.
Special thanks goes to Billy
Wilkinson for volunteering his
time as an official throughout
all the games, as well as, DA
Belcher, Justin Williams, Jessica Morris, Brittany Taylor
and Jill Hester for assisting in
registration, keeping score, and
ensuring that everyone had a
great time throughout all the
matches.
The adult volleyball league
will continue every Thursday
from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. through
March 12. All family and
friends are encouraged to come
out and watch the games.

Learning about “going green”
Middlesex Elementary students in Amy Daniel’s first grade
class got a lesson in the “3Rs” (reduce, re-use and recycle)
when Gloucester Clean Community Coordinator Lorna Lindsey visited the class recently. The children were inspired to
“go green” after seeing lots of products made from recycled
materials, including pencils made from denim, purses made
from juice boxes, and carpet made from plastic bottles.
Ducks Unlimited banquet set
The Middle Peninsula Ducks
Unlimited Chapter banquet
will be from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.
on Feb. 19 at the Abingdon

Rd. in Gloucester. Ticket
prices are $50 for singles; $90
for couples; $300 for a spon-
sorship table; and $750 for a
