Chargers sweep K&Q;
host Blue Devils Friday
by Larry Chowning
The Middlesex High School varsity baseball team raised its Conference 42 record to 6-1 in recent action
with a doubleheader sweep of King
and Queen on May 15.
The Chargers also lost 11-3 to
King William on Tuesday to lower
their overall record to 7-6.
MHS defeated King and Queen
11-3 in the first game and 19-3 in
the second game ended by the mercy
rule. In the first game, Mason Phillips paced MHS with 3 singles and
an RBI. Chris Blake had a double, a
single and 2 RBIs.
Lady Chargers
host Mathews
in finale Friday
by Tom Chillemi
The Middlesex High School varsity
softball team lost 24-0 to powerful King
William on May 19.
Cavalier Kayla Huffman was throwing heat as she recorded a no-hitter.
Zariah Freeze reached base on a first
inning walk and was the only Lady
Charger base runner in the game.
Lady Charger Rachael Howard made
the only contact with the ball that went
into fair territory, but it was an out.
There were a few bright spots on
defense, including a double play. Freeze
fielded a grounder, stepped on third
base and fired to Tambria Wake at first
base who made a long stretching catch
to complete the double play.
“Like the old adage says, ‘They hit
the ball where we were not,’ ” said Lady
Charger coach Wade Traynham.
Middlesex hosts arch-rival Mathews
on Friday, May 23, at the Middlesex
Sports Complex in its regular season
finale. The JV teams play at 5 p.m. and
the varsity game follows 30 minutes
after the JV game ends.

Saluda 9-year-old is
a standout for Sharks
Taylor Berry of Saluda recently
earned a spot on the roster of the
U-11 Virginia Legacy Elite Champions Team. The Club Champions
League (CCL) is the top league in
Virginia and Maryland, consisting of 16 top clubs throughout the
region that compete along the East
Coast for the Virginia Soccer Association State Cup.
Berry is coming off of a very
successful fall travel season with
the Tidewater Sharks, based in
Williamsburg, in which she was the
leading scorer for her team, topping
the charts with 43 points (18 goals
and 7 assists).
The Sharks finished the regular
season at 10-3-1. The team then
went on to win the Capital Fall
Classic in Richmond where Berry
racked up 7 goals in 3 games.
Berry’s reputation as a talented
young prospect is quickly gaining
recognition amongst both players and coaches in and around the
region.
She plans on finishing the spring
season with the Tidewater Sharks
before joining the Legacy CCL in
the fall.
Berry, 9, is a fourth-grader at
Middlesex Elementary School and
the daughter of Lauren and Jonathan Berry of Saluda.

the Hampton Braves on the opening
weekend of the 2014 Southern Virginia Baseball League season on May
17-18, winning twice in shutout fashion by scores of 10-0 and 11-0.
This Saturday, May 24, the Deltas
will host a rare afternoon home game.
They take on the York Cannons at 2

Jay Moore pitched 7 shutout
innings, while 6 different Deltas collected hits, as Deltaville opened the
season in dominant fashion on Saturday night. Moore scattered just 4 hits
while striking out 3. He did not allow
a Brave runner past second base and
issued just 1 walk.
The Deltas scored their first run in
the 2nd inning when Travis Crump
singled and was plated by Adam
Baldwin. Deltaville scored 4 more
runs in the 3rd inning, which was
sparked by a 2-RBI single by Alexan-
der Crittenden.
The Deltas added 2 more runs in
the 4th inning and 3 runs in the 5th
inning.
Travis Crump led all hitters with a
3-for-3 day, scoring twice.
Deltas 11, Braves 0
Following the spectacular pitching
of Moore on Saturday night, Jordan
Boze had a tall task ahead of him to
match that on Sunday.
Boze proved more than up to the
task. The second-year Delta tossed
6 shutout innings of 2-hit baseball,
striking out 6.
The Deltaville offense combined
for 13 hits, and scored all of its runs
in a 5-run 4th and 6-run 5th inning.
Scott Crump and Colby Wiggins led
the offensive attack, each contributing
2 hits and 2 runs batted in.
Trevor Hickman pitched a scoreless
7th inning, striking out 2, to preserve
the shutout.

JV Chargers shut down Mathews
The Middlesex High School
junior varsity soccer team
blanked Mathews 3-0 on May
14. “We were real excited
to play this game against
Mathews,” said MHS coach
Eric Smith. “We noticed on
the bus ride over that we were
pumped and ready to play.
“Our defense was playing
well and our offense has been
getting better each and every
game,” he said. “We had a lot
of scoring opportunities in the
first part of the game but could
not capitalize on them.
Then Elijah Fomin received
the ball on the right side and
took upon himself to drive to
the goal. He beat three players to the front of the goal and
then split two more players to
go one on one with the goalie.
Fomin planted a great shot to
the right side of the net for
MHS’s first goal.
This really sparked the whole
team and Kian Cheatham took
the cornerkick and placed a
perfect shot at the eight yard
where Emilie Smith battled
off a taller defender to place a
great header to the upper right
corner of the net.
“This was a great momentum builder for the rest of the
game,” said Smith.
The half ended with a 2-0
Middlesex lead.
The second half started with
some great 1-2 passes by the
Chargers and MHS kept up the
aggressiveness on both sides
of the ball. “Strong passes and
ball control was evident in
this game,” said Coach Smith.
“One of our fullbacks, Cole
Radabaugh, played one of his
best games of the season. He
shut down every advance that
came his way and backed up
teammates that needed help,”
Fifteen minutes into the
second half Derron Cooke got
the ball on the left side and
drove to the corner. He saw
Andre Johnson making a run
and gave him a perfect pass.
Andre’s first touch was a perfect setup to his left foot, which
he planted a great low shot to
the right lower corner for the
Chargers’ last goal.
“This game was a total team
effort and every player was a
valuable part of this win,” said
Coach Smith.
The offense was led by Darnell, Emilie Smith and Andre
Johnson. The defense was led
by Cole, Will Howard, and
Mason Duke.

Making new friends
Janie Allen and Alaina Taylor introduce themselves to Mrs.
Gilbert, a former resident of Deltaville and currently a resident at Riverside Convalescent Home in Saluda. Mrs. Gilbert was one of many residents who enjoyed a visit from the
Middlesex Family YMCA After-School Program last week.
“The children always enjoy when we visit the nursing home
and they walk out with many new grandparents,” said
YMCA program director Rebecca Panis. “The Middlesex

Lane, Tappahannock.
The mural represents more
than nine months of work on
the part of 152 young artists
on the St. Margaret’s School
(SMS) Art Team, working in
close collaboration with 27
children from St. Timothy’s
congregation. It is an expression of the art team’s collective
synergy, welcoming travelers
into town.
Truly a community effort,
the wall was donated by St.
Timothy’s Church. Additionally, the paint and supplies were donated by Lowe’s
Home Improvement Center in
Tappahannock.
St. Margaret’s art teachers, Konst and Konstantina
Konstantinov, professionally
known as the KonKons, and
their passion for giving back to
the Tappahannock community
are the driving forces behind
the mural.
According to the KonKons,
“Intentionally choosing the
title “Peace on Earth,” and
visually translating the theme
through the universal language
of arts, our hope is to extend
the mural’s appeal beyond
Christianity to faithful people
from all beliefs.”
The Peace on Earth mural is
the latest in a series of community-based art projects that has
earned wide recognition for
the SMS Art Team. In the past
decade, students have created:
“The Noah’s Ark” for St. John’s
Episcopal Church, “Hope for
the Planet” at Riverside Hospital, and “Tappahannock, the
Town I Love” at the town hall.
The event is free and all are
welcome.

Heat Illness
by Bob Cerullo EMT-E
Heat illness may occur when
you are outside on a hot humid
day or in a hot poorly ventilated space. It may start with
muscle cramps from loss of
salt while sweating. When the
body is overheated, not cooling
off could lead to heat exhaustion from dehydration or the
more severe condition known
as heatstroke (sunstroke). Children and older people are more
susceptible and may quickly
go from feeling fine to heat illness. Here are the symptoms:
muscle cramps in abdomen
or legs, heavy perspiration,
lightheadedness,
weakness,
headache, thirst, nausea, vomiting, irrational behavior, cool
skin that is pale, red or moist.
Dilated pupils or unconsciousness. Call 9-1-1 if victim does
not improve of if condition
worsens.
Heat illness is a serious condition do not hesitate to call
EMS. If the body temperature
rises above 102 degrees Fahrenheit, the condition is known
as heatstroke. Additional
symptoms are: dark urine,
small pupils, rapid or weak
pulse, rapid or shallow breathing, confusion, weakness, seizure or unconsciousness
Cool the victim by moving
them into the shade, in front
of a fan, a cool building or an
air conditioned car. You might
want to spray the victim with a
garden hose. Wrap the victim
in wet towels or sheets. Put
cold compresses on the neck
groin and arm pits. If possible
immerse the victim in cold
water.

RCC nursing program earns additional accreditation
Rappahannock Community
College recently learned that
its Associate Degree Nursing
(ADN) Program has received
accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN),
formally the National League
for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Elizabeth Crowther,
college president, stated that
the college and its professional partners are thrilled
because this is the pinnacle of
recognitions for a strong nursing program with a long history of success.
Dr. Crowther noted that
the ADN program has always
been regionally accredited by
the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and that graduates
of the ADN program earn an
associate degree in nursing
that is also approved by the
Virginia Board of Nursing.
ACEN accreditation documents that a nursing program
has been evaluated by qualified independent evaluators
and is found to adhere to the
highest national standards of
education.
In its early years, the RCC
ADN program existed as a
partnership with J. Sargeant
Reynolds Community College,
requiring students to complete
the second year of the program
at JSRCC. Five years ago the
college determined that its
students would benefit by staying in the region to complete
their full program. This change
necessitated pursuit of state
board of nursing approval and
national accreditation independent of the JSRCC program, a multi-step process that
took several years.
Over the past three years,
nearly 100% of the students
have passed the state licensure
exam, and have since gained
employment as registered
nurses. “This tough accreditation is all about giving the
students the best possible
experience,” says Koehler.
She asserts that this recognition will enhance the view
taken of RCC graduates by
both employers and bachelor’s
and master’s degree nursing
programs.
Rappahannock Community
College offers several levels
of nursing preparation, from
Nurse Aide (NA), to Practical Nursing (PN), through
Associate-Degree
Nursing
(ADN). RCC has articulation
agreements with several fouryear colleges and universities,
through which its degree graduates may pursue a bachelor’s
or even a master’s degree nursing. Other health-related training is available in emergency
medical technology, phlebotomy, pharmacy assisting, and
medical records. This training
complements other programs
such as the Associate of Arts
and Sciences transfer degree,
and degrees and certificates in
engineering, criminal justice,
and computer technology.
Please visit the RCC website
at www.rappahannock.edu for
more information about all
these programs, as well as the
new nursing accreditation.

RCC offers hands-on EMT training
Above, students of Rappahannock Community College’s
Emergency Medical Technician Program work to free a
crash victim during a class. “These exercises allow students
to gain experience that is much closer to a real-life situation than that offered by similar courses at other institutions,” said a program spokesperson.
Remembrance and
walk slated at RW-C
Rappahannock
Westminster-Canterbury on May 30 will
host a celebration combining
two traditional annual events,
the Memorial Day Remembrance and the Labyrinth Walk.
Activities will begin at 9:30
a.m. with the Memorial Day
Remembrance, at the labyrinth on RW-C’s campus, 132
Lancaster Drive, Irvington.
Immediately following this
ceremony, participants will be
invited to participate in a meditative walk from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. The event is free and open
to the public. No reservations
are required.
“In the past, we have held the
Memorial Day Remembrance
by our flagpole, but this year
we are moving it to the laby-
rinth so the two events can be
held in a single location,” said
resident life coordinator Maria
Ferrand.
Residents who are military
veterans will carry a flag to
the labyrinth, where a brief
reading will be conducted, followed by a tribute to veterans
who passed away during the
previous year. The ceremony
will end with attendees singing
“Taps.”
The walk will give attendees a chance to participate in a
time-honored ritual of contemplation and spiritual renewal,
said Rebecca Ford, who has
helped organize the walk for
several years. Participants
proceed at their own pace, she
said.

The Urbanna Business

be hosted by Atherston Hall
in its gardens at 5:30 p.m.

idea came up when people
suggested moving around to
visit other businesses in town
through last week’s meetand-greet. UBA thought that
sounded like a great idea, so
please watch for our meeting locations. Not only do we
encourage members to attend
these meetings, we are always
looking for new members and
great volunteers with creative

Ferguson Holds Off Satterlee for 35th TireX
USA 100 Victory at Virginia Motor Speedway
Chris Ferguson of Mt. Holly,
N.C., finally got himself an
Eagle trophy at Bill Sawyer’s
Virginia Motor Speedway,
something he has been trying to
do since his first race at the halfmile speedway in Jamaica back
in 2006. On Saturday night,
Ferguson took control of the
lead from Greg Satterlee on lap
11 and held the lead throughout
the race.
Ferguson held off a late race
challenge from Satterlee to win
the Ultimate Super Late Model
Series sanctioned 35th Annual
TireX USA 100 at Virginia
Motor Speedway worth $10,000.
Greg Satterlee, Jonathan Davenport, Dennis Franklin, and Brandon Overton rounded out the top
five finishers.
Other winners on the night
were Matt Quade (Budweiser
Modified),
Brett
Adkins
(Truckin Thunder Sportsman)
and Brandon Sandridge (Collision One Limited Stock).
Ferguson and Satterlee led
the 24-car field to green with
Satterlee jumping out to an
early lead. With Satterlee using
the high line and Ferguson on
the bottom, the two raced virtually side by side for the first 11
laps when Ferguson muscled
his way under Satterlee in turn
1 to take over the lead.
Several laps later, Jonathan
Davenport got past Satterlee
for second and begin to put
pressure on Ferguson as the two
raced through traffic. Sattterlee
fell back to third and battled
with series point leader Dennis
Franklin, Brandon Overton and
Austin Hubbard for position.
With Ferguson setting a torrid
pace up front Satterlee went back
to work on the high side riding
the cushion to take back second
from Davenport with four laps to
go. On the next circuit Satterlee
closed to within a car length as
they raced into turn three. On the
exit of Turn 4 Satterlee crossed
over and looked to get inside Ferguson at the line. In turn 1 Satterlee went back to the high side
as the two worked lapped traffic.
On the final lap Satterlee made
one last attempt on Ferguson but
jumped the cushion in turn three
allowing Ferguson to record the
$10,000 victory. Rounding out
the top five were Greg Satterlee, Jonathan Davenport, Dennis
Franklin, and Brandon Overton.
It took three starts to get the

lead and pulled away from the
field. Eighth starting Matt Quade
worked his way to the front and
on lap 8 got under Duncan to
battle for the lead. The two raced
side by side for the next three
laps before Quade grabed the
lead out of turn 2. Once out front
Quade pulled away from the field
to take the win followed by Ryan
Toole, 15th starting Matt Marshall, Jimmy Duncan and Brian
Maxey.
Brett Adkins finally made it to
victory lane in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman with a pass on
then leader Jeremiah Marshall on
lap 13. Marshall paced the field
for the first nine laps with no
pressure from anyone. However,
on lap 10 Brett Adkins finally
got to the bumper of Marshall
and began to pressure the rookie
driver. On lap 13 Marshall made
a small mistake and that was all
Adkins needed to take the lead.
Once out front Adkins pulled
away for the win. Rounding out
the top five were Hunter Shelton,
Jeremiah Marshall, Davey Pullen
and 12 year old Macey Causey.
The Collision One Limited
Stock feature came down to the
final lap, again. Brian Bradley
paced the field with a ton of
action going on behind him. On
lap 12 point leader Brandon Sandridge had moved into the second
and was closing on Bradley for
the lead. Bradley would hold off
Sandridge during several restarts
after cautions. On the final lap
Sandridge dove under Bradley in
turn 2 to take the lead. In turn 3
Bradley tried the crossover move
and got to his inside and the
two raced back to the finish line
with Sandridge taking the win
by inches over Bradley. Rounding out the top five were Chad

National Junior Honor Society members from St. Clare
Walker (SCW) Middle School
chose to serve their community on the afternoon of
May 18, by picking up litter
along Gen. Puller Highway in
Deltaville. With support from
dean of students Jamie Wynberry and some young helpers,
they marched up the sides of
the road filling 31 orange bags
with refuse and collecting one
old discarded tire. The students
have scheduled another pickup on June 7 in the Saluda area.
According to Wynberry,
“We faced challenges such
as encounters by a raccoon,
several dogs, and falling in
ditches. However, fun was
had by all, and I overheard
one student say, ‘People just
don’t realize how bad littering
is. Even if you just throw one
thing out, it really adds up after
a while.’ “
The Keep Middlesex Beautiful Committee, on behalf of
the community, extends its
gratitude to the students and
their helpers for demonstrating
their commitment to a more
beautiful Middlesex County.
The committee also urges all
of Middlesex to show its appreciation for the work of these
students and others who work
tirelessly to clean up our roadsides by resisting the urge to toss
litter onto the roadside. Committee member Celane Roden
said, “Save your trash for trash
bins and cover your truck beds
when taking refuse to the convenience stations.”
The KMB Committee also
encourages other community
groups who organize litter
pick-ups to send photos of your
group to our Facebook page.
Every litter pick-up event
helps keep our county clean
and encourages others to do
the same.
