Vol. 1 Number 2
Spring 2016
SPRING LOCAL
AUTHOR EXPO A
BIG SUCCESS!
The Conyers-Rockdale Library System
is pleased to welcome Teresa Totten:
Our new Assistant Director
Ms. Totten comes to us from the Dekalb
County Library System. She began her
successful career in support of libraries
surprisingly early – working as a page in her
school library in the 7th grade.
After obtaining her MLS, Ms. Totten worked
for several library systems including the
Robert W. Woodruff Library, Gwinnett
County Public Libraries, and Dekalb County
Public Libraries before bringing her
considerable experience and expertise to the Nancy Guinn Memorial
Library at the beginning of this year.
When not at work, Ms. Totten loves to listen to music, especially old
school R&B. She also likes to dance and enjoys being an active member
of her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. She is partial to reading
works which share a message of strength and some of her favorite books
are Waiting to Exhale by Terry McMillan, The Bluest Eye and Song of
Solomon by Toni Morrison, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya
Angelou and The Color Purple by Alice Walker. Ms. Totten also offers a
shout out to the book: Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson
confessing that “this little book completely changed the way I approach
my life and my career!”
Ms. Totten is very happy to be working for the Conyers-Rockdale Library
system and states that a favorite thing about her new job is that “It's a
smaller system which I think allows for greater opportunities to connect
with the community.” Ms. Totten points out that the library serves a
diverse population and has, she believes, the potential to become the social
hub of the community.
Last month, due to popular demand, the
library brought back their Local Author
Expo Program. The event provided local
authors with an opportunity to showcase
their books and network whilst offering
patrons the chance to purchase
autographed books and enjoy the
company of some wonderful writers.
The March 5th event, which featured
authors representing many different
literary genres, saw an excellent turnout
of over a hundred patrons and visitors!
If you missed this Expo, there is no need
to despair! Not only did its success
ensure that it will be back in the fall, but
also impelled the creation of a related
but separate event ~ a Local Children’s
Author Expo!
The fall date has not yet been finalized
for the next Local Author Expo but the
first Local Children’s Author Expo will
be held on Saturday, August 20, 2016.
For more details, see the Event
Spotlights article on page two of this
newsletter.
