HOLT DISTRICT COMMUNITY CAFÉ
CELEBRATES ITS FIRST ANNIVERSARY
Holt District Community Café, which is based at Holt Community Centre, is celebrating its first anniversary.
On 9th June, the organisers of the Café decided to combine the celebrations with a special event, which took place in the town centre, where the
new regional dish, the East Anglian Sausage Flat, pioneered by Heart FM’s breakfast show, was introduced to local people and businesses.
After a morning which saw samples of the Sausage Flat handed out around
the town centre, the Café featured the dish on its lunch menu that day
and welcomed around 40 local people including Holt District Councillor,
Maggie Prior, and Mayor of Holt, Cllr Duncan Baker, to lunch (photograph,
right). There was also a chance to celebrate the work of the Café’s
volunteers during the annual National Volunteers’ Week event.
The Café was set up by four local churches to provide a welcoming weekly
get-together for residents in Holt and surrounding villages, who face issues
of isolation. Its volunteers prepare and serve a two-course meal at midday
every Thursday, and its following has grown rapidly since it first opened its
doors on 23rd June last year.
Holt resident Carolyn Burn, who was instrumental in the founding of the
enterprise, said: “We are incredibly blessed with our wonderful dedicated
volunteers (below) who put heart and soul into all they do at the Café and so encouraged that increasing
numbers of local people are coming
and enjoying time with us. We have
had many testimonies from customers
who tell us how much their weekly
time at the Café means to them and are
so excited to be celebrating our one
year anniversary this month.
I’d also like to thank Allards butchers
for their generous support supplying
all the sausage meat for the Sausage
Flats.”
The Community Café has now also
become a venue for Little Star, a
group of local people (below) who knit, sew and crochet items of clothing for stillborn babies and also the
homeless. Membership of Little Star is also growing, with around a dozen people attending every Thursday.
Talking about the Community Café, Cllr Prior said: “The atmosphere at the Café is what strikes me and
the buzz today reminds
me of the event that
was held here at
Christmas. The amount of things this group is doing for other
people is amazing. I think huge, huge thanks should go to
all the volunteers who turn up every week and show total
commitment.”
Cllr Baker said: “It’s absolutely marvellous what has been
achieved in such a short time and testament to its success that
so many people attend. It’s wonderful.”
Both Holt Community Café and Little Star welcome
anyone interested in participating in either community
enterprise. Please visit the Community Centre at 10.30am on
Thursdays to meet the Little Star knitters and crocheters. The
Community Café serves lunch on Thursdays between midday
and 1.30pm.

A TASTE OF NORFOLK AT HOUGHTON
HALL PROVES A BIG SUCCESS
A gala dinner held on Wednesday 23rd June at the Norfolk Estate, Houghton Hall (left) in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices
(EACH) has proved a huge success.
The event, entitled ‘A Taste of Norfolk’, was hosted by The
Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley. The 80 guests, some of whom
have travelled from around the world, were invited to the black tie evening
while being encouraged to make a donation to the charity’s vital nook appeal.
EACH was also extremely proud to welcome their Royal Patron HRH
The Duchess of Cambridge, who attended along with HRH The Duke of
Cambridge.
EACH provides vital services caring for children and young people with
life-threatening conditions across East
Anglia and supporting their families.
The nook appeal is the charity’s
campaign to raise £10 million to
transform children’s palliative care
across Norfolk, including building a new hospice called the nook.
Graham Butland, Chief Executive said: “We are so thrilled with the success of ‘A Taste of Norfolk’.
This truly unprecedented event for EACH was only made possible following many months of hard work
and dedication from our voluntary committee, led by our Patron Emma Deterding and Philippa Pease of
Purple Chilli Events. We want to say a huge thank you to Emma and all the committee members, who
have worked so tirelessly, and to the many companies and individuals, who have so generously showed
their support.”
The evening began with an elegant champagne reception where guests were treated to musical
entertainment from Sam Aldersey-Williams and The Jefford Brothers, as well as some magic tricks
courtesy of magician Archie Manners. Guests then moved through to the Stone Hall of the elegant country
house to enjoy a very special five course meal with courses created and cooked by five world renowned
Michelin Star chefs: Galton Blackiston, Sat Bains, Claude Bosi, Tom Kerridge and Mark Edwards.
A highlight of the evening was a performance by the EACH Treehouse Choir, who took to the Gallery in
the Stone Hall after dinner. The Choir, of which members include EACH families, staff and volunteers,
performed three songs: Something Inside So Strong by Labi Siffre, Somewhere Only We Know by Keane, Don’t Worry About Me by Frances.
An emotionally charged speech was given by choir member Charlotte Markham, where she told guests about her son Elliot who died at just a
few hours old. Charlotte and her family received care and support from EACH during this difficult time. She stunned the room with her brave
account of support they received from the charity and how EACH helped her whole family, including Elliot’s older brother Louis, through
Elliot’s death and their bereavement.
The dinner was brought to a close with speeches from critically acclaimed author and EACH Ambassador Anthony Horowitz OBE and The
Marquess of Cholmondeley. Anthony has been an Ambassador of EACH since 2008 and is passionate about the work of the charity. He spoke
to guests about his recent visit to the existing hospice in Quidenham to find out more about the plans for the nook and why a new building in
Norfolk is so important for care delivery. He urged everyone in the room and the wider public to back this vital appeal, so EACH can deliver
even better services to even more families.
EACH Patron and event organiser Emma Deterding said: “We are so thrilled with the success of A Taste of Norfolk and would like to say a huge
thank you to everyone involved in the evening. I would like to thank Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for agreeing
to join us for this amazing evening. Special thanks are also due to The Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley for so generously offering
us Houghton Hall as a venue. There have been so many companies and individuals who have generously and graciously shown their support.
We are so grateful, it truly was a wonderful evening. We will be announcing a total raised in due course, but thanks to the huge generosity of our
hosts, supporters and guests, this special event enables the nook to be one step closer to being a reality for so many families.”
EACH has outgrown its current hospice in Quidenham, due to demand and the changing and more complex needs of the children and young
people they care for. The nook will be built on a five-acre woodland site in Framingham Earl just south of Norwich and will offer services which
are either currently unavailable or extremely limited at Quidenham hospice such as a hydrotherapy pool, music studio, large rooms for on-site
family support groups, larger and more accessible outside space for children to explore and play and private rooms for one-to-one counselling.

CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS
This term, children from five primary schools in North Norfolk have
been taking part in an exciting and ambitious music, art and poetry
project based around the orchestral work ‘Carnival of the Animals’ by
Camille Saint-Saens.
On 13th July at 12.30pm the musicians from ‘Parnassus’, led by the
internationally renowned conductor Peter Stark, will give a concert
featuring ‘Carnival of the Animals’ at St Andrew’s Church, Holt,
which up to fifty children from each of five partner primary schools,
Holt, Gresham Village, Langham, Overstrand and Roughton, will be
attending.
There will also be a public performance at 6.30pm that evening.

During the first half of the summer term, children took part in art,
music and poetry workshops, based on the animal theme, to inspire
and add to the musical experience. These workshops have stimulated
adventurous and imaginative ideas for the related art and poetry
competitions.
The resulting art work will be exhibited in three local libraries;
Cromer, Holt and Sheringham from 6th - 20th July and in St Andrew’s
Church, Holt, from 23rd - 28th July as part of the Holt Festival.

On the final day of the exhibition at St Andrew’s Church in Holt, on
Thursday 28th July, at 6.30pm there will be a Celebratory Event.
During which a selection of the children’s poetry will be read and
prizes for the art and poetry competitions will be presented by award
winning children’s author and poet Kevin Crossley-Holland. A book of
selected poems will also be available.
The Carnival of the Animals project is being organised and partfunded by FALCON, with generous funding from the Arts Council
of England and the Norfolk Arts Fund. It is being run in partnership
with Holt Festival (who are funding the school’s concert), and is made
possible by support of the five partner primary schools, as well as the
Norfolk Library Service and the Rector of St Andrew’s Church, Holt.

KNIT AND NATTER
an open morning at Sheringham Community
Age Concern North Norfolk cannot survive without the kind support
and donations of local people and organisations and over the winter
the local Knit and Natter group, organised by Kate Davis and held at
Sheringham Library, kindly donated some lovely handmade blankets
to the residents and clients of the Age Concern Day Centre, some of
which were also distributed to the lonely and isolated elderly to help
them through the cold winter days.
The Sheringham Library Knit and Natter is part of the charity Norfolk
Knitters and Stitchers.
They knit, sew and crochet items for a wide range of organisations
in the UK and also support International Aid and various orphanages
abroad.
They meet on the 3rd and 4th Tuesday each month, 2.30pm to 4.00pm
at Sheringham Library and it is free to join. They are very friendly and
can teach people to knit if they are new to the craft.
On the first Friday of the month, 10.00am till 12.00noon, they have
Centre, selling wool at a reasonable price; have
patterns for sewing and knitting, display of knitted and sewn items, and
refreshments. It is open to all and free to come along.
Every Thursday afternoon they run a drop in sewing machine class
from 4.00pm to 6.00pm at Sheringham Community Centre for £4.00
a session. People can bring their own machine or use one of theirs. It
is advisable to book to make sure there is a free machine. It is suitable
for all abilities, for those who are complete beginners to those of more
experience.

Launching at last year’s 1940s Weekend, ration books are distributed
to visitors on the weekend. The trail encourages visitors to discover the
retailers and businesses of Holt, collect stamps in their ration books at
each location and qualify for a prize draw on the weekend, a perfect
opportunity for all to increase footfall.
This year’s ration book and ration book trail will tie in with the Holt
1940s Weekend charity, Walking With the Wounded. Participating
businesses will be supplied with a WWTW teddy bear. Visitors to
participating stores/businesses will be encouraged to search for the
bear in-store and write its name in the corresponding space inside the
ration book, meaning the customers will dwell longer in each of the
participating stores.

CAT SHOT IN FIELD
DALLING
Dear Caroline,
Our cat Sharrie was shot on 28th or 29th May,
the Bank Holiday weekend, in the vicinity of
Langham Road, Field Dalling.
He managed to limp home on the Sunday
morning and we rushed him to the vet.
An airgun pellet had entered his upper chest
on the left side, just above his lungs, and
shattered his shoulder blade.
The damage was so great that his left front
leg had to be amputated. He now faces
extensive aftercare and lifelong disability.
In time he will adapt, but his previous life is
gone for ever.
The police have classified the incident as
criminal damage, issued a crime number, and
asked for further incidents to be reported.
Cats are not required to be confined to their
owner’s property.
A person found guilty of causing unnecessary
suffering to any animal can face a maximum
six-month prison sentence or a £20,000 fine.
The law is clear.
You must not shoot a cat unless: (1) you are
certain it is feral; (2) you are certain it will
not suffer. If these conditions are not both
met, you are committing an offence.
Responsible gun websites agree.
In practice, no one should shoot cats.

to offer their condolences on the sudden loss
of my wife Ronnie Rix to cancer in March.
Words cannot describe what such a void her
loss has left in the family, so I would like to
thank you all who attended her funeral at St.
Andrew’s, church, Holt and packed out the
place to give her a fitting send off.

Hospital and The Big C Cancer charity, so

games and exercises, and
sometimes it is just nice

course lunches, and we
also have Diane the chiropodist come in on a regular basis - we can
arrange for a hairdresser if you so wish.
If you think you might enjoy doing things like this in the company
of our happy band of members, then why not book a ‘taster’
session? You don’t have to be lonely, or in need of care or live on
your own (couples are welcome), but if you are of retirement age
and would like to give us a go just ‘phone either Dorothy or Carol
on a Monday or Thursday between 9.30am and 2.30pm on 01263
861120 and we can tell you all about our wonderful centre and the
multitude of lovely things we get up to!
To follow that was a very lovely church
service with a chaplain to the Queen giving

ONE SMALL STEP
We have seen in the Book of Isaiah that those who ‘mourn in Zion...
might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord.’
(61.3). And in Psalm one we are told of the ‘law of the Lord’, and
‘the way of the righteous’, Psalm one is one small step from the tree
of life, (see numbers 24.6).
The tree of life is the most important thing in the Bible, its there at
the beginning and at the end its still there: the saints strove to be
one with it, it healed sins and turned men into Gods, and gave them
eternal life. The mystical Jesus hung upon a resemblance of it, the
black river of death could not overcome it, and the knowledge of it
was sealed by the saints. The early Christians corrupted the tree but
the tree laid in a cave in the Wilderness of Judaea just waiting to be
found and that’s what happened in the middle of the last century.
The tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genisis 2:9) was in the
cave also.

NORMAN J SANDERS
(1930 - 2016)
The family of Norman Sanders, founder of Sanders Coaches, have sadly announced his
death, after a short illness.
Norman was born in Woodford Essex in 1930 and worked as a steam fitter on British Rail
for many years. After the change to diesel in the early 60’s, he was re-trained but found the
fumes caused him illness. The family doctor suggested a new start and in 1968 the family
moved to Sheringham where they had enjoyed many holidays.
Norman first worked at Kingsland Engineering but hated the indoor factory life, so took a job
with Mascot Coaches at Cromer, as a mechanic and there he first learnt to drive a coach.
Mascot was taken over by Reynolds Coaches and in the summer of 1975 Norman left
Reynolds to join the five coach business of Bennett’s Coaches at Holt. George Bennett
unexpectedly told Norman in October of the same year he was going to retire and Norman
was worried about his job and income. Having discussed with George what might happen,
George again unexpectedly said, “Look Norman, you seem to know what you’re doing, why
don’t you take it over?”
Norman, who had six children at home and no money said, “I can’t afford to” and George
said, “no worries, you can pay me as you go.”
At the end of the day on Norman’s 45th birthday he was handed the keys of the six vehicles
and Sanders Coaches was born the next morning, the 1st December 1975. Little did he
Norman and his late wife Gladys
envisage that day how the company would expand and grow over the next 25 years.
From the very earliest days Norman always treated local organisations in the town well. On
many occasions the local Football and Youth Club would book buses for trips out and would receive bills for the buses but never for the driver
if that driver was Norman. And he always took a close interest in the events that those clubs were going to, watching with interest football
matches and, on many occasions, acting as draughts referee and score keeper at Youth Club indoor games tournaments!
By the year 2000, the company was operating close to 100 vehicles and as other companies dropped rural routes, a way was found to replace
them. Norman was passionate about serving his local community and ensuring people’s transport links remained open. He was often to be
found out in his car collecting someone, who had mistakenly missed the bus and had an important appointment. Norman and his wife Gladys
spent many years personally escorting many of the 50 plus coach holidays and short breaks they arranged each year. Their personal style and
delivery of these Holidays was unique and very successful for that reason.
Norman hung up his driving gloves on his 80th birthday on 30th November 2010, after what can only be described as a job very well done.
The Company he built will go on as a living testimony to his life’s work.
Norman leaves 6 children, Valerie, Charles, Andrew, Paul, Mary and Helen, 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren who will all miss him
very much.
Norman’s funeral arrangements will be announced later.

corrugated iron church in 1903 for the workers on the Midland &
Great Northern Railway (which was closed in the 1960’s).
It stands in the grounds of a ruined medieval church, on a minor road
running north-west from the B1354 on the western entrance to the
town of Melton Constable.

Dear friends,
Ever been cooked a boiled egg by an
Archbishop?
Hardly a claim to fame but on the
morning of my ordination as deacon in
1993 I was cooked a boiled egg by the then
Archbishop of York, John Habgood.
Together with others who were to be
made deacon in York Minster I had spent
the night in the Archbishop’s Palace
situated on the banks of the River Ouse not
far outside of the City. The Palace has
been the home of the Archbishop’s of York
for over 750 years and one cannot help but
be a little over awed by the scale, grandeur and history of the place.
Yet, on the morning of my ordination I was taught a lesson that I
have never forgotten.
Seated around the kitchen table the
Archbishop preceded to wait upon us and serve us with boiled eggs
and toast. He was very cleverly teaching us that to be made a
deacon is to be made a servant of others and even an Archbishop
who was once ordained a deacon was still someone who above else
was called to serve others. The Archbishop was putting into
practice Jesus’ words in teaching his disciples to follow his example
when he said, “I am among you as one who serves.”
Here in the parish we are of course looking forward to the
ordination of Stephen Graham as a deacon on Saturday 2nd July by
Bishop Graham in Norwich Cathedral and to his first day in the
parish on Sunday 3rd July. Stephen will serve the first year of at
least 3 years here as a deacon and will be ordained priest in 2017.

Deacons existed in the early church of the New Testament and
have remained part of the life of the Church. A deacon is a ministry
that is associated with service of some kind, in fact the word deacon
is from a Greek word meaning servant. As a deacon Stephen will
be involved in all areas of parish life, visiting, pastoral care,
working with children, young people and families, preaching,
teaching, leading worship, taking funerals and celebrating baptisms.
He will also have a distinct roll in assisting with the Sunday
services, though as a deacon he will not preside at the communion
service..
The Church of England belongs to the “one, holy, catholic and
apostolic Church,” which we affirm in the words of the Creed
Sunday by Sunday. It is also expressed in the sacramental life of the
Church and in the ancient threefold
order of ministry of Bishop, Priests
and Deacons. To be ordained into
ministry is to answer God’s call to
serve him in a particular way and is an
immense privilege.
Stephen has
answered God’s call and I look
forward to welcoming him to the
Parish to continue his training serving
as a deacon and then as a priest. I
have no doubt the people of the parish
will also warmly welcome him and be
blessed by his ministry among us.

REGISTRATION NUMBERS
CLUB 2016 RALLY
The Registration Numbers Club is the original UK club
for cherished vehicle registration number enthusiasts
and will hold its annual rally for 2016 in the grounds of the North
Norfolk Heritage Railway western terminus at High Kelling, around a
mile from Holt on Sunday 10th July. The club has never held a rally in
Norfolk before so is looking forward to a great day with some superb
cherished registrations guaranteed to be on view.
Entrants will be split into eleven classes as usual with registrations
voted on by members themselves. Winners and runners-up will be
awarded trophies. In memory of the late Noel Woodall, well known
in autonumerology circles, an award will once again be presented to
recognise Noel’s considerable contribution to this fascinating subject.
The Registration Numbers Club was established in 1997 at a time
of crisis for cherished numbers when the licensing authority began
refusing transfers and causing misery for many. Registrations which
had been owned for many years, numbers which had been passed
down from previous generations were in danger of being lost in the
hands of the bureaucrats. Thankfully, today, cherished registrations are
just an interesting part of today’s modern motoring and buying, selling
and transferring them very simple thanks to the digital revolution.
The Registration Numbers Club is independent and nationwide and
is dedicated to the right to hold and transfer a cherished vehicle
registration mark ..... a right which has been in existence since 1903!

DAVID BARBER EXHIBITION
David Barber has been a professional artist for over forty years, painting
in a variety of mediums with subjects as diverse as wildlife, landscapes,
seascapes and fantasy.
His book ‘Drawn to North Norfolk’ is now available in a printed version
of his sketchbook, with 120 pen and ink sketches of the North Norfolk
Coast from Hunstanton to Happisburgh. The book took nine months to
complete.
David moved back to Norfolk a couple of years ago having spent the last
forty years on the south coast, where his reputation as a prolific painter
has given him a large following. Whilst living in Worthing, West Sussex
he opened three galleries and was one of the founders of The East Beach
Studios in Worthing.
His book signing in Driftwood Gallery, 9-11 Church Street, Sheringham
on the 2nd July also previews his first exhibition in Norfolk for 20 years.
Called Birds Beasts and the Bizarre, it opens at Oddfellows Hall, Lifeboat
Plain, Sheringham on 19th July till 24th July, 10.00am till twilight.
Currently, you may see David down on the seafront in Sheringham,
where he has been painting on the sea wall a mural of the Neolithic age
to commemorate the finding of a mammoth in the local cliffs.

Worth the Wait!
SPECIALISING IN LONG DISTANCE JOURNEYS
All good things are worth waiting for and with asparagus, you
certainly do have to be patient .... 3 years from planting to the first
crop. The vegetable has a rich and long history, going back to the
Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, all of whom revered its
qualities and taste. What I love about this vegetable is that it truly is
seasonal .... we only get British asparagus between May and June,
a very short window of opportunity to enjoy its delights, but what
a delicious return for our patience! We really don’t have to wait for
anything in our modern technological age .... all things, it seems, are
immediate, which rather takes some of the fun out of life. The joy of
anticipation is something we should guard more carefully.
Now I know that asparagus is not exactly a cheap veg, but that is no
reason why we should not enjoy it, for there are ways and means of

THE ROMANCE IN SHARING OUR FAITH
MORE EFFECTIVELY
This month, our last meeting before the summer break, we welcome
John Wright to encourage us to speak about our faith. John reminds
us that we are each called to bear witness in our
own way. He is well known and respected by
many globally, not just here in Norfolk where he
and his wife Sue live. A fascinating speaker and
accomplished writer, John delivers the truth of the
gospel with humour and encouragement. It will be
a very enjoyable evening.
John brings a richness from his life experience.
Having been educated at Winchester and Christ
Church, Oxford he received his business training at Harvard and
PWC. As a bachelor of 32 with an E-Type Jaguar it seemed as if a
brilliant career lay before him; but at this point he had a dramatic
conversion experience which was the prelude to a period of tribulation
balanced by many great blessings. Businesses collapsed, he went
through the desert experience of two years unemployment, he had
cancer twice and finally the undeserved humiliation of prison.
Throughout these trials and afflictions John’s sense of humour has
never left him. The joy of the Lord has been his strength. John
founded the St Matthews Housing Association which provided
housing for the homeless in over 80 houses in East Anglia. He is also
a Lay Reader in the Church of England and a member of the College
of Evangelists Emeritus instituted by the Archbishops of Canterbury
and York.
The Filling Station, which was born out of the Church of England in
the West Country, has grown exponentially in terms of venues opening
all over the United Kingdom and continues to serve and refresh both
Church leaders, congregations and more importantly to open the eyes
of those who are seeking answers to the meaning of life through the
Christian faith. The Filling Station is helping to bring unity amongst
believers from across the whole Church spectrum.

fellowship, wonderful worship followed by the main talk. There will

Asparagus Soup
1 bunch asparagus, chopped - see method
1 white onion, finely chopped
6-8 new potatoes chopped into small chunks
Olive oil
Veg stock cube
½ mug porridge oats
Boiling water
Seasoning
Break off just the ends of the asparagus
(not the tip end) - it should break cleanly, not bend, and you want to
use the maximum amount of stalk, so try not to lose too much - if the
asparagus is very fresh, you may be able to use the whole stalk.
Chop into 1 inch lengths and set aside.
Place the onion in a deep saucepan with the potato and a good slug
of olive oil and gently sweat the veg over a medium heat, without
allowing them to catch or burn, for about 5 mins.
Add in the asparagus and sweat for a further 2 mins whilst you boil
the kettle.
Add in enough boiling water to cover the veg and crumble in the
stock cube, give a good stir and cover to simmer until the potatoes
are cooked - about 10 mins.
Add in the oats halfway through, season and stir well.
Once all cooked, blitz with a hand blender until silky smooth, check
seasoning and serve immediately with a good hunk of bread and a
swirl of cream if desired.
This keeps well in the fridge for a couple of days, but you may need
to thin it down a little when reheating, as the oats can cause it to
slightly set.

National Youth Choirs bring
SUMMERFEST 2016 to Holt
Anybody who loves singing is in for a treat this August as the National Youth Choirs
of Great Britain’s annual Summerfest comes to Holt for a series of performances and
events.
Summerfest is a nationwide celebration of choral music by the five
choirs of NYCGB, which perform at different locations around the
UK every year. This Summer, Holt is playing host to the National
Youth Boys’ Choir, which most recently performed at the Royal
Albert Hall in April.
The first event is a free pop-up performance at 12.15pm on
Thursday 18th August in Holt Memorial Garden. The National
Youth Boys’ Choir will be entertaining passers-by with a variety
of songs and everybody is invited to listen.
The next event is an open morning on Friday 19th August at
Gresham’s School, where the National Youth Boys’ Choir is
holding its Summer residential course. Visitors will see rehearsals,
and enjoy their own singing session led by the NYCGB music
team. Anyone who would like to attend can sign up for free online

The final event is the Summerfest 2016 concert at 3pm on

RANDELL’S FOOTCARE OPENS
NEW HEALTHCARE CENTRE IN THE
HEART OF SHERINGHAM
Holt Town Council met on 13th June for its monthly Town Council
meeting.
It had been a busy week for the council, with the Holt in Bloom
community planting day, ready for judging on 11th July, and on the
12th June the street party in Church Street celebrating the Queen’s 90th
birthday.
The meeting decided after a lot of debate and discussion to employ one
full time and one part time maintenance personnel. The hope is that
this will enable us to improve the surroundings of Holt and have more
control over cutting of the verges etc.
The Town Council will purchase a Kabuto vehicle to help with this and
hopefully this time next year the town will see the results of having the
extra help. It was also the time for the Council to award some grants for
good causes in Holt.

We are hoping to have another round of grant funding around Christmas
time. Nearer the end of the year we will announce when and how.
Councillors were saddened to hear that there has been some more
vandalism at the Church Street toilets. There is a cost implication to the
constant damage that is taking place here and we would ask everyone to
be vigilant and report anything suspicious to the Police on 101.
Cllrs Prior and High reported that the need for a new primary school
has been accepted by the County Council. The project will start in
earnest with a feasibility study and options for sites are being looked at
now.
It was also agreed to go ahead, in conjunction with the WI, and
refurbish the Town sign. Weather and the ensuing years have taken their
toll on the sign and it will be good to have it restored with the brass
plate explaining the sign moved to the front, along with a new flower
planter. The future aim would be to design a new sign and maybe even
a new position.
The next Town Council meeting is on 11th July. All are welcome and
there will be a chance for you to have your say.

surgery and solicitors offices on the corner of Augusta Street and
Church Road in Sheringham have been transformed by Randell’s

providing an exciting range of services including Botox treatments and
travel support, whereas other practitioners will include Acupuncture,
Reflexology, a Life Coach, Counselling, a Nutritionist, Sports Therapy,
a Hypnotherapist, and Holistic Massage with a Bowen Technique
specialist, providing their enhanced services. Other therapists and
practitioners will add their skills in the future though at the moment
Randell’s are particularly seeking a Physiotherapist to join the team.
The new health centre provided by Randell’s Healthcare is unique
in offering so many services under the one roof and will no doubt
enhance the quality of life for many people in Sheringham and the
surrounding area. Company Director and Podiatrist Steve Randell said,
“I’m so thrilled we are able to bring such a fantastic treatment centre to

Dubs at the Hall was established in 2011 and this
year we enter our 6th event, which promises to be
bigger and better than previous years.
We are a family orientated VW festival and keeping the kids
entertained is top priority on our list because we know as parents

The Bowen Technique, which seems too gentle to have any effect,
can help with problems from backache and migraine to sciatica and
frozen shoulder, often when medicine can’t. There are now a thousand
practitioners in Britain, and it has a diverse fan base, including celebrities.
Most patients come to Bowen with a musculo-skeletal problem:
typically backache, frozen shoulder or sports injuries. A treatment lasts
60 minutes, is done through loose fitting clothing whilst laying on a
treatment couch or seated. I will lightly move over muscles and the
surrounding connective tissues at specific points, many on the back, legs
and neck. The pressure is no more than you could apply to the eyeball.
Bowen therapists work on the fascia, the connective tissue that wraps
around muscles, which we believe can become twisted and cause pain,
often somewhere else as the body compensates for the original injury.
It would compare to someone wearing a shirt and twisting the left-hand
corner of it, you would see the material stretching, that’s where the
tension is, and it would feel uncomfortable. What we do to release the
tension is unwind that twisting. The body is not a pile of bones stacked
on top of bones: it’s a series of tensions.
Increasingly GPs now refer patients to Bowen Therapists. “I tend to be
sceptical of such things, but after trying everything for my own sciatica,
Bowen was the only treatment that worked,” says GP Dr Claire Pickin,
who went on to train in Bowen. “I began suggesting it to patients with
musculo-skeletal pain and those for whom I had nothing else to offer
from mainstream medicine. It more often helped than didn’t. What I

REFLECTIONS ON 2016 ANGLIAN
NATIONAL PILGRIMAGE TO WALSINGHAM

For almost 40 years, I have been coming to Walsingham on
pilgrimage, either to the Anglican National, New Dawn or alone.
It was only this year that I realised the origins of the Anglican
National.
When Alfred Patten first encouraged pilgrimages to Walsingham,
the shrine was in St Mary’s church but it was decided that the shrine
church containing the Holy House, was a more suitable place to house
the shrine. So it was that the statue was moved from the church to the
shrine with great ceremony one Whitsun bank holiday. The Whitsun
weekend became the annual commemoration of the event and, when
Spring Bank Holiday overtook the Whitsun bank holiday, so the
National also took place on Spring bank holiday.
Although we live close, I arranged a room for a couple of nights in
Walsingham to allow my cousin Jackie to have a taste of the National
whilst, also, having a bolt hole if needed.
One personal attraction is the traditional hymns being sung with such
gusto as well as seeing the clergy in all their attire. Another personal
pleasure was meeting a long term friend, Fr Michael Silver. We had
met at my first visit to Walsingham having previously, in Easter week
1978, met at the Anglo Catholic renewal week held at Loughborough
University. I have always been able to confide in him and, although
we haven’t seen each other for a few years, I felt privileged that he
still prays for my daughter and I whenever he says mass.
So it was a happy, relaxed day, meeting old friends and making new
friends both in the street and over meals. I never seem to get to do
everything I want to but that gives me an excuse to come again.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB
Kelling Probus Club met for lunch at the Dales Country
Club Hotel on Thursday 16th June.
The speaker was Sarah Jackson. Sarah described her
work as a midwife for Medecin Sans Frontieres (MSF) in Ethiopia,
at Waheer, close to the Somali Border. MSF receives no government
funding, relies entirely on charitable gifting, and works specifically
in regions and zones where warfare and violence generate particular
hardship and need, often exposing its personnel to significant risk.
Sarah reported that MSF has, since its inception in the early ‘70’s,
worked in eighty different countries and has treated millions of
patients, many of whom could have had access to no other medical
care.
Sarah’s described her location as remote to the extent that both
patients attending her clinic, and also those who might well have
benefitted from onward referral for surgical management, would face
several days of difficult travel. Such journeys would not be covered
by adequate pain relief and would further compromise outcomes
for both mother and child. Provision of care in such circumstances
was further complicated by inadequate supplies of clean water, a
lack of sterilisation facilities for instruments and equipment, and by
malnutrition of mothers and infants. Prioritising management required
concern for and understanding of the wider family and the importance
of a mother’s health to the survival of elder siblings.
The clinic was sometimes attended by soldiers and armed men,
including boys, and by the sound of gunfire which had to be correctly
attributed as due to either celebration or conflict. There was a risk of
kidnap by the Al-Shabaab (AL_Quaeda-linked) terrorist group. The
staff of the clinic depended on local sources for information about the
level of these risks.
Sarah also trained local midwives to deal with difficult childbirths in
a culture where most deliveries are aided by neighbours and where
infant mortality rates are 60 % and the frequency of death in childbirth
of a 15 year old mother is 7,500 times greater than it is in Europe.
Her audience was deeply impressed by Sarah’s articulate and riveting
account of her experiences, by her willingness to accept the stress
of such responsibilities, and by her inspiring example of service to
common humanity.
A collection was made for a donation to MSF.

COUNTY COUNCIL NEWS
EDP/Norfolk County Council ‘Write On Norfolk’ competition:
aims to encourage Norfolk’s youngest residents to keep up writing
and literacy skills over the long summer holiday and complements the
county’s Big Read challenge run during the summer in all of Norfolk’s
libraries. Open to Norfolk children 5 to 13 years old the competition
calls for an original piece of creative writing. Entries can be submitted
now and until 31st August. Prizes of Jarrold book tokens worth £75,
£50 and £25 and the winning entries will be published in the EDP and
used as part of Norfolk County Council Libraries’ Autumn storytelling
festival. Details can be found on www.norfolk.gov.uk/writeon
Syrian Refugees: The situation regarding Syrian refugees in
relation to Norfolk can be found on the NCC website for the Policy
and Resources Committee which met on 31st May and will now
be discussed at full Council on 25th July. It was good to have a
good number of Norfolk residents present, asking questions at the
committee meeting. I anticipate more will attend the council meeting.
The agenda will appear on the NCC website ten days before it meets.
Devolution: Yet again, by the time you read this edition of The Holt
Chronicle, the situation regarding devolution will have changed and that is the one thing of which I am certain regarding the whole
process. You can find some detail on the following website which I
am told is regularly updated - www.eastangliadevo.co.uk. What I do
know is that at the Council meeting on 27th June whatever proposal
by then is on the table will be considered and with the council’s
agreement will go out for public consultation. If all goes according to
plan the results of the public consultation would be reported at the end
of August and, in accordance with the legislative process, passed to
the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. The
Secretary of State would then draft an Order which would come back
to the Council for decision at the October Council meeting.

Summer arrived in time for the Queen’s birthday celebrations no need to go to London with all the lovely events around our
division (and I am sure elsewhere). Congratulations to everyone for

Better Broadband (Fibre) for Langham: I am delighted to confirm
that fibre broadband went live in Langham at the beginning of May.
Whilst I know some residents have already transferred to fibre I am
uncertain as to whether the news of availability is widespread but
courtesy of the GVN it will be shortly. To check if your property is
fibre enabled go to www.betterbroadbandnorfolk.co.uk; if the answer
is yes follow the instructions to check what speeds and providers
are available. I need to note that distance from the cabinet dictates
which properties fibre reaches and what speed residents will be able to
receive.
Better Broadband (Fibre) for Stody: I am equally pleased to
confirm that fibre broadband has reached a number of properties in
Stody and therefore the above information applies. I am told that 15
properties have available speeds above 15 Mbps (13 of them in the
range of 24 Mbps). Whilst some properties are too far away from the
cabinet to be enabled, further fibre is planned so more news at a later
time.
Existing Copper Broadband: Please remember whilst to obtain fibre
broadband you need to form a contract with an ISP (internet service
provider) it is not compulsory and you can reman with your existing
copper provision. If you would prefer to remain but are not satisfied
the advice remains that you need to complain to your provider; urge
them to provide whatever you have contracted to receive. If there is no
improvement issue them with a formal, recorded, complaint.
Parish Partnership: A reminder about this very useful partnership.
It is the scheme whereby a town or parish council puts forward an
application for a project, say a SAM2 speed warning system, and
the county matches the funding. Other ideas include trods (simple
footway), small lengths of formal footways, improved crossing
facilities, street furniture (cycle racks/benches at bus stops), Public
rights of Way improvements. And as well as councils getting their
thinking caps on, there’s no reason why residents could not put ideas
to their town and parish councils. The 2016/17 successful schemes are
now underway and invitations to make bids for 2017/18 have been
issued with a bid deadline of December with approvals next March.

NNUH APPEALS FOR
NORTH NORFOLK VOLUNTEERS
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is appealing for
volunteers to join their ‘settle-in service’ programme and settle patients
back into their homes after a stay in hospital. The service, launched in
June 2015, has had a busy year with an increase in patients accessing the
service and now more volunteers are needed for the North Norfolk coast.
‘Settle-in’ volunteers meet people as they return home from hospital and
carry out some simple checks around the house. They can also arrange
for people to be helped or referred to other services where necessary
including the Red Cross Support at Home service which can offer ongoing support.
This special volunteering role can slot in around an individual’s work or
other commitments.
Jo Barber, personal assistant to Jeremy Over the Director of Workforce
at the NNUH, is a settle-in volunteer and regularly settles people back
into their own homes after their stay in hospital. Jo joined the Trust 11
years ago as a PA and joined the settle-in service in April. “I saw the role
advertised at work and thought why not give it a try as it means I can
give something back, and I can fit this in around my working week”, she
says.
Mabel Anderson, 80 from Sheringham, was Jo’s first settle in patient.
Mabel recently had her first ever stay in hospital and explains the benefit
of a settle in service volunteer. “I found the prospect of returning home
with no one to greet me quite daunting and worried if I had anything
in to eat or what the state of my fridge was like!” explained Mabel; “Jo
was an absolute godsend and we need more people like her. Knowing
I had someone to greet me and help get me settled made coming out of
hospital a lot less worrying and much easier. I am really thankful I had
someone like Jo.”
The settle-in service role is the first volunteering role that Jo has taken
on and she is thoroughly enjoying it. Jo explains you do not need to have
a medical background to fulfil the role and it is a great opportunity for
those wishing to help people, especially the elderly who are often on
their own.

LOVEART COMPETITION
EACH are inviting local artists to enter an Art Competition to raise
funds for the nook appeal.
The LoveArt Competition will be centred around the theme of love, a
topic bound to bring out some very expressive and interesting pieces.
An auction of art, showcasing all the entries, will take place at the
beautiful Mannington Hall and Gardens on Sunday 4th September.
The nook appeal is our vision to transform palliative care throughout
Norfolk.
Our current hospice in Quidenham,
has been a fantastic home-fromhome for many years. However, we
have outgrown the building. We are
unable to make structural changes
and we have had an increase in
demand over the last few years.
We have issues with wheelchair
space, and many services are either
restricted or unavailable compared
to the other hospices.
This is why we want to raise money
to launch a new hospice called ‘the
nook’ which will be situated just
south of Norwich.
It will be closer to local hospitals
and amenities, far bigger and will
have more services.

North Norfolk Photographic Society
SIX OF THE BEST!
North Norfolk Photographic Society held the second of its Annual Competitions on
Wednesday 1st June. Most Camera Clubs hold ‘Annual’ competitions, where their members
are invited to vie for the ‘best of the best’ for the year,
and having previously held the contest for projected
pictures, it was now the turn of the prints. Judge for
the day was Dave Stewart (above right), a professional
photographer from Peterborough, who amazingly has
a passion for photography that still allows him to give
up his evening to travel from his home to judge in
Holt.
The competition was in two groups: for so-called
novices (many really not novices at all) and advanced
members.
Nine members entered the ‘Novice’ section and Dave
Stewart thought five of their entries worth putting to
one side for a second look. In the end, Rob Palethorpe’s ‘Late Sun at Cley’ (below) was
the winner - the Mill and marshes brightly lit by the
sun under a dark, brooding sky. Michaela Bone was
2nd with ‘Heathland Reflections’ and Grace Glaister
3rd with ‘Emma’.
The Advanced section drew 22 competitors who
entered a total of 61 prints, 7 of which were put to
one side and from which Dave decided Paul Richards’
‘Black-winged Stilt’ (above) as the winner, the
bird beautifully captured against a pastel coloured
background. Alan Dedman’s ‘Stalking the Seagulls’
2nd, David Tottman’s ‘Becalmed’ 3rd (above left).

Ten man Holt suffered a five wicket loss in their latest league
encounter away at league leaders Narborough.
Holt reached 162-7 from their 45 overs, with the key contributions
for Holt coming from number three Kevin Moore (42), opener Aaron
Riseborough (34), on debut for Holt, and captain Ciaron Chapman (31).
Narborough successfully chased down 163 in 40 overs, five wickets
down, with contributions coming from all of their batsmen with none
getting above the thirties.
Robin Thaxter (1-21), Mark Scase (1-28), Liam Channell (1-32) and
Aaron Riseborough (1-37) all took a wicket apiece for Holt.

Holt 164-4 beat Beetley 101 all out by 63 runs

It was a great result for Holt in their latest league encounter at home to
Beetley and was a good all-round team performance.
After losing the toss and being put into bat first, Holt’s openers Aaron
Riseborough and Mark Spillett put on a vital opening partnership worth
120 runs. Boundaries didn’t come regularly, but they kept the score
ticking with ones and twos and, after both batsmen had brought up their
fifties, Spillett (50) was trapped lbw.
Kevin Moore joined Riseborough, but ten runs into their partnership,
Riseborough’s top knock came to an end on 72, when he was caught at
cover. After losing Moore (4) and Liam Channell (5) in quick succession,
Ciaron Chapman (13*) and Dan Thomas (11*) saw Holt through to 164-4
off their 45 overs.
After the interval, Holt’s opening bowlers Robin Thaxter and George
Collyer were looking for early wickets.
Collyer (2-28) dismissed both openers and Thaxter then got himself in
the wickets column. Beetley then added 22 runs for the fourth wicket.

1915 - JUST OVER 100 YEARS AGO!

SERIOUS COLLISION APPEAL, FAKENHAM
Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious
collision in West Barsham, near Fakenham, on the evening of Monday
13th June.
At around 6.00pm, a red Vauxhall Adam was travelling from
Fakenham towards Wells-next-the-Sea when it was in collision with
a telegraph pole, before coming to rest in a ditch, facing the opposite
direction.
Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the
incident or has information concerning the driving manner of the
vehicle prior to the collision.
Both the driver and the front seat passenger received serious internal
injuries as a result of the collision and are currently in a critical but
stable condition in Addenbrookes Hospital.
Anyone with information should contact PC Louise Manning,
Swaffham Roads Policing on 101.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some statistics for the year 1915
The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.
Fuel for cars was sold in chemists only.
Only 14 percent of homes had a bath.
Only 8 percent of homes had a telephone.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.
The average British wage in 1915 was £15 per year!
A competent accountant could expect to earn £800 per year.
A dentist £900 per year.
A vet between £600 and £900 per year.
And, a mechanical engineer about £2000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births took place at home.
90% of all Doctors had no university education! Instead, they attended
so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the
press and the government as ‘substandard’.
Sugar cost two pence a pound. Eggs were 10 pence a dozen.
Coffee was five pence a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month and used Borax or
egg yolks for shampoo.
Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into
their country for any reason.
The five leading causes of death were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhoea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke
The American flag had 45 stars.
The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30.
Crossword puzzles, canned beer and iced tea hadn’t been invented yet.
There was neither a Mother’s Day nor a Father’s Day.
Two out of every 10 adults couldn’t read or write and, only 6 percent
of all British pupils went to university.
Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter
at local corner chemists. Back then chemists said, “Heroin clears
the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach,
bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health!”
18% of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.
There were about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S.A.! In 2014
this figure had risen to 14,249.
In the UK the murder rate in 1915 was 1420. In 2015 it was 537.
Can you imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.
APPEAL FOLLOWING BURGLARY IN FAKENHAM
Police are appealing for information following a burglary in
Fakenham.
A property in Rudham Stile Lane was broken into between 12.15pm
and 5.00pm on Wednesday 15th June and some jewellery was stolen.
Anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area
between the times stated or anyone with information should contact
DC Emma Cross at Kings Lynn CID on 101.

Having searched the herbs and spices section in
my local supermarket, I stopped a young sales
assistant and asked her, “Do you sell cloves?”
“Yeah,” she replied, “But there’s only T-shirts.”
At the supermarket I noticed a woman with
four boys and a baby. Her patience was
wearing thin as the boys persistently called out
“MUMMY!”while she tried to shop.
Finally, she blurted, “I don’t want to hear the
word ‘Mummy’ for at least ten minutes!”
The boys fell silent for a few seconds. Then one
tugged on his mother’s dress and said softly,
“Excuse me, Miss.”
I got talking to a lovely elderly couple at the
supermarket, but subsequently missed my bus.
As I walked home, a car pulled up.
Seeing it was the old people, I got in. They looked
at each other, then asked where I was going.
When we reached my house, I thanked them and
enquired if they’d much further to go.
“Not really,” they replied. “We were outside our
door when you got in.”
