Bridge staff Our tutors are professional practitioners who believe in making a high level of training accessible to a wide range of people. The aim was simple: to make the highest level of actor training accessible to all, to produce actors from a mix of social and cultural backgrounds and, by doing so, to enrich the theatre, radio, film and television. We do not see actors as machines, simply producing what directors require of them. Instead we give them an approach to acting and a method that they can use independently, and that they can extend for themselves. We place the actor’s own creativity at the centre of theatre training, encouraging in them a strong sense of the importance of a company and of theatre as a collaborative process. Initially, we offered a free advisory service for those wishing to enter the profession and courses that cut through the atmosphere of elitism and privilege that existed in some parts of the industry. In 1996, the current Two Year Professional Acting Course and One Year Postgraduate/Post Experience Professional Acting Course were introduced and The Bridge began to get noticed as a company that turned out highly motivated and creative actors who could be relied on to deliver. We are as keen on developing openness, generosity and positivity in rehearsal as we are on building self-reliance and inventiveness. We want our students to be receptive to very different kinds of theatre and never to be dogmatic about ideas or theories. We make great demands on those whom we select and they deliver what we ask and succeed because we believe in them. In 2001, as the courses expanded, we moved to Cecil Sharp House in Camden. This Grade Two listed building remained our home for 10 years. As we continued to expand and develop as a company we were in need of our own premises and in June 2012 90 Kingsway, Tally Ho Corner in North Finchley became the new home of The Bridge. Our new building has ample rehearsal space, including three sprung floored studios (one with dance mirrors) and a green room for students. This means that our training can expand and we can provide a new foundation course. Our production venues include The Criterion, Fortune, Ambassadors and Cockpit theatres. Graduates from past years regularly return to work with us, rehearse for auditions, attend events and catch up with news. Our history is, of course, still being written. Come and be a part of it. 4 www.thebridge-ttc.org Tel 020 7424 0860 Above all, we provide a positive, dynamic and welcoming environment where people get the opportunities they need. For full details including course content and fees please see our website. 6 www.thebridge-ttc.org Tel 020 7424 0860 7 COURSE CONTENT Whatever your natural strengths, a career as a professional actor demands familiarity with a range of disciplines. At The Bridge we embrace the full spectrum of performance skills enabling you to develop strong technique and explore new areas. Acting Focuses on developing your imagination and introduces methods that will enable you to create a role and work with a group in improvising, devising and using text. You will explore a variety of acting styles, gain an understanding of the rehearsal process and acquire extensive performance skills. Modern and Classical plays, scenes and audition pieces are studied, rehearsed and performed through group and one-to-one teaching. For these classes all students are given an individual programme of work tailored to their particular needs. Movement and Dance Develops your physical expressiveness, fitness and spatial awareness. You will be introduced to stage movement, study human and animal movement and work in a variety of dance styles. Period movement is studied in depth. No previous dance experience is necessary. Voice and Speech Relaxation and breathing, projection and clarity — you will learn how to use your ‘whole voice’ and to develop expressiveness, power and subtlety. Classical text and verse speaking are studied and you will work on accents and dialects. You will also develop a thorough understanding of how the relationship with an audience is established. Improvisation A thorough introduction to this essential skill, working with some of the leading figures in the field. Singing and Musical Theatre Anyone who can speak can learn to sing — it is essential for the actor’s training and hugely enjoyable. You will work on performance skills and technique, musical theatre styles are studied and a range of musical skills are developed. You will also receive individual singing tutorials. Physical Theatre A sense of play is at the heart of all good acting. The drama of such diverse performers as Steven Berkoff and Theatre de Complicite is explored in work that is central to the course. You must use your whole body in performance and can learn to be highly responsive to your fellow actors. Mime, clown, Commedia dell’arte, melodrama and mask can be included in this area. Shakespeare and Classical Theatre The initial emphasis is on workshops that make the text more accessible, whatever your level of experience. Improvisation, physical techniques, paraphrase and acting games are used. Detailed studies of the social, historical and intellectual background of the plays lead to exercises and final productions. Text Analysis How can we read actively and translate what we read into dramatic action? These sessions train our imagination in new ways. Theatre History You will be given a grounding in Theatre History, but the emphasis is always a practical one. This knowledge is central to our professional lives. Production You will put into practice what you have learned on the course in production and production exercises. This is a chance to gain confidence and experience and to evaluate your own work. As the course progresses, rehearsal time increases. All students take part in professional productions, and graduating students present their final work to agents and casting directors in a varied season of productions and a West End showcase. Theatre Studies Students may cover a range of subjects, including directing, educational theatre, and the language of theatre. Students can learn stage management skills. Students may also opt to present their own dramatic writing. Auditions A tailor-made repertoire of audition pieces is essential for you to progress in your career. Audition technique is studied throughout each course and you will be prepared for many different kinds of castings in theatre, film, television and radio. Professional Studies Preparing you for entry to the profession, Equity and Spotlight representatives, agents, directors and casting directors are invited to advise you on launching your career and looking for work. The full spectrum of practical matters is covered, from identifying where your casting potential lies to dealing with tax, and from CVs and photographs to Equity membership. Tutorials An essential part of your training, in which skills and techniques learned in class are related to the work seen in a variety of exciting productions in London theatres. A chance to evaluate your own work and get guidance on a range of course-related, personal or financial matters. You will be given regular feedback about your progress on the course and support in planning your future career. Stage Combat The Working Diary/ Log Book Theatre Visits Both armed and unarmed combat are studied. A range of fighting styles is explored and the work is integrated into productions. Graduating students will take the Academy of Performance Combat Fight Performance Exam. Television, film and radio You will work with experienced actors and directors on acting for camera and for microphone. The technical demands of each medium are examined in both practical classes and projects. You will record and discuss the work, as well as evaluating your own progress. Assessment This is continuous and is based on your progress in lessons, rehearsals and productions. Assessments are both positive and realistic. They let you know what you have achieved and identify exactly what you must do to develop further skills. Auditions ELISABETH ANGHARAD The audition is held in a friendly and supportive atmosphere and lasts from 10.00am – 5.00pm with breaks, giving you the opportunity to work with us. Our past students have told us how much they enjoyed their audition day and how valuable the experience was. There is always a positive element to the outcome of the audition — either selection for the course or guidance on other options that will be open to you. Part 1 — Individual audition We ask you to learn and perform two speeches of 2–3 minutes from published plays. You should aim to show us contrasting emotions in your speeches. Choose characters you would like to play on stage and read the whole play so that you can understand the context and character you are playing. Treat the audition as a rehearsal. Don’t feel that you won’t be selected unless you give a perfect performance. We are looking for imagination and promise — not perfection at this stage. Try to relax and enjoy your time with us. Please bring copies of your speeches with you to the audition. (Note: you may perform speeches from Shakespeare if you would like to, but there is no automatic requirement to do so). Part 2 — Group Workshop Acting games, exercises and improvisations. No preparation is necessary for this part of the audition. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and trainers or flat shoes. Part 3 — Interview A chance for us to discover your interests and talents and for you to ask us more about the course. Visit www.thebridge-ttc.org for a list of current audition dates. 22 www.thebridge-ttc.org Tel 020 7424 0860 23 How to get here Our new site is a 12 minute walk from Woodside Park station on the Northern line.
