K 1923-2013 GULLIVER | ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2013-2014 9 10 CELEBRATING 60 YEARS OF KRUTULIS FAMILY LEADERSHIP In Honor of 60 Years of Krutulis Family Leadership Excerpts from the 60th Anniversary Online Celebration Page “Congratulations to John Krutulis and Gulliver Schools on 60 years of educational excellence! For 28 years, I have been a proud employee of Gulliver Schools. As a longtime employee, I have reflections on many fronts. Witnessing historic moments and celebrations at Gulliver, sharing so many moments with Mrs. K and personally photographing many, seeing the recovery after Hurricane Andrew, enjoying the physical changes and implementation of technology – these are but a few. Now, I see children in the Lower School whose parents were students when I began my employment. And...the most special of all is to have my own little grandchild a student at Gulliver. Her father, my son-in-law, is a former student. Full circle! Seeing happy students each and every day, working with fellow employees who love what they do, working with and assisting an amazing principal are reasons I come to work each day. However, the most important reason of all is the Gulliver leadership. Yes, the leadership is what makes Gulliver what it is today. The vision Mrs. K had for an ‘academic and character-building education’ lives on. “Our wish would be for every parent to receive the call we did from our daughter while she was at college. She called us late one night during her first year away at school. The words every parent wants to hear went as follows: ‘Mom, Dad, thank you. Thank you for having the wisdom to enroll me at Gulliver. I know I am going to be successful. I still hear my teachers’ voices in my head when I approach these collegiate assignments and I am not worried about keeping up. In fact, I think I am setting the bar high by bringing what I learned here. Mom, Dad, thank you and I love you.’ We certainly never doubted our decision to become a Gulliver family, but that call really cemented what we already knew. Anyone fortunate enough to be a part of Gulliver is very lucky indeed.” The Frazier Family, Jasmine ‘07, Mekayla ‘20 To read additional birthday wishes from the Gulliver community, please visit www.gulliverschools.org/gulliver60. I feel confident the Krutulis family leadership will live on for another 60 years. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this historic celebration.” Marsha Rowland, Administrative Assistant, Lower School GULLIVER | ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2013-2014 11 60th Day of School in Honor of 60 Years On November 5, 2013, the 60th day of the academic year, Gulliver kicked off a celebration that lasted throughout the school year. 99 GULLIVER | ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2013-2014 17 18 Message from the President and Chairman of the Board and the Director and Head of Schools Sixty years ago, Marian Cline Krutulis, founder of Gulliver Schools, began her life’s work of creating an academic community devoted to educational excellence with a personal touch that fulfills each student’s potential. Through Mrs. K’s pioneering and visionary leadership, the mission of Gulliver was born. Since then, that mission has remained at the center of our identity and success. This year’s report is dedicated to a rich 60-year history of Krutulis family leadership and the deep-rooted legacy of Mrs. K that lives on in each and every one of us. While we are always looking to the future at Gulliver, we also realize how important it is to understand and honor our past. In this spirit, the 2013-2014 Annual Report of Giving pays tribute to our humble beginnings, celebrates our collective accomplishments, commemorates our anniversary and recognizes many members of the Gulliver community for their ongoing commitment and generosity. We are pleased to report that in this celebratory year, we raised an impressive $1.3 million to advance the mission of our great school. Annual Fund contributions grew 15 percent over the previous year, totaling more than $800,000. We sincerely appreciate the generosity of our 1,400-plus donors for helping make these accomplishments possible. We would also like to recognize and congratulate the 14 Gulliver divisions, including the entire Montgomery Drive Campus, the entire extended care team and the entire maintenance department, which achieved 100 percent participation in this year’s Annual Fund efforts. We also owe a great debt of gratitude to our Annual Fund volunteer chairs for their leadership and commitment to our goal. Anniversary celebrations kicked off this year with a 60th day of school celebration, during which local dignitaries presented proclamations for the occasion. The celebrations culminated with a Tribute Event in the spring, attended by more than 600 parents, alumni and friends. It was touching to see the outpouring of support this celebration received. Our sponsors and underwriters, our volunteers and event committee – we cannot thank you enough for your generosity. We would like to acknowledge and thank our honorary chairs – Ray and Shannon Allen, Jennifer Valoppi and Christian de Berdouaré – for their involvement. We also extend our sincere gratitude to our event co-chairs – Kara Diez, Teresita Haskett and Brenda Jabro – for working alongside our advancement department to ensure that we celebrated this milestone in such a grand way. As we begin the next chapter in our history, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Frank Steel as our new head of schools. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to those who assisted in the national search process. Frank joined the Gulliver family this July, after a 30-year career at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia. There, he held positions including head of school, head of Upper School and associate admissions director. Frank’s integrity, drive for academic excellence and management skills will ensure that the Krutulis legacy, established six decades ago, lives on. Our Gulliver community should be assured that this management change solidifies our unwavering dedication to honor our traditions, as well as a commitment to plan for our continued growth. As always, our students remain at the center of everything we do here at Gulliver, and year after year, we are continuously amazed at the breadth of their accomplishments in the areas of academics, dance, visual arts, community service and athletics – just to name a few. This year, three fine arts students earned recognition as Scholastic Art Award winners. The Lower School has given out more than 100 Caught You Caring and Respectful Raider awards, and Lower School students logged more than 67 million reading words during the first three quarters. The Middle School Robotics Team won two awards at the FIRST LEGO League “Nature’s Fury” Challenge: Most Creative Project for its tsunami pod design and Most Helpful for assisting other teams with their robots and programs. Also, the Middle School Drama Troupe earned 15 ensemble and duet awards (eight Superior and two Excellent) at the Florida GULLIVER | ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2013-2014 19 Junior Thespians State Festival, and the Gulliver Academy Advanced Orchestra received an overall Excellent rating at the Florida Orchestra Association District Music Performance Assessments. The Gulliver Academy Advanced Band received an overall Excellent rating at the Florida Bandmasters Association than $6 million in merit-based and non-athletic scholarship awards. District Music Performance Assessments. students continue to excel in unprecedented ways, receiving national and international recognition. Our staff consistently demonstrates a commitment and dedication to the success and advancement of Gulliver’s mission. Our alumni are leaders in fields including business, education, medicine, art, law and more. They are improving and enhancing their communities and the country in often-quiet, unassuming ways. Our high school students upheld this same level of excellence. Our Prep Drama Troupe received Perfect scores and straight Superiors at the Florida State Thespian Festival in pantomime, duet musical and monologue. For the first time in Gulliver history, they also entered Musical Theatre Competitions of America’s national competition with the musical medley “The Ladies of Rodgers and Hammerstein,” taking home second place. The Prep jazz, string, vocal and wind ensembles received straight Superior ratings at the Florida Orchestra, Bandmasters and Vocal Associations’ district festivals, earning 15 out of 15 Superior ratings in four events. The Prep’s dance team also was named National Over-All Small Team Champions at the 2014 Contest of Champions, where more than 65 teams represented 12 states. And, the Prep engineering team won the Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge and was awarded two provisional patents for water and energy systems. The members of the class of 2014 logged more than 64,000 community service hours during their four years at the Prep. Their major projects included the Dance Club’s AIDS benefit and student favorite Interact Club, benefiting Chapman Partnership, Easter Seals and Give Kids the World. Raider sports teams took home four state championship titles in 2013-2014, in boys’ soccer, boys’ water polo and boys’ and girls’ tennis. A number of students in this particularly accomplished class earned academic distinctions: Six students were recognized as National Merit Scholarship Finalists by their respective college or university, five students earned places as National Merit Commended Scholars, six students were named National Hispanic Scholars, two students were named National Achievement Scholars and five students were nominated for the Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards. Our seniors also continued the tradition of 100 percent college acceptance, and earned more 20 While the accolades are diverse, they are united by a school community that is committed to building on a tradition of excellence. Our faculty and With more than 50 countries represented in our student population, the Gulliver of today is a diverse community full of positive energy, momentum, progress and pride. During this special anniversary year, you have responded with immense generosity – be it volunteering your time with the Parents’ Association or Alumni Association, providing classroom support or contributing to the Annual Fund. We have counted on you, and we are so grateful for the strong show of support our community has displayed for the work we are doing today and for the possibilities that lie ahead of us. Thanks to everyone’s collective efforts, our great school is poised for a bright and robust future. We are indeed in good company, all together for Gulliver. With sincere gratitude, Emilio Nuñez ‘83 P 2013, 2015 John Krutulis ‘76 P 2002, 2004 President and Chairman, Director and Head of Schools Board of Trustees 2013-2014 2013-2014 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD AND THE DIRECTOR AND HEAD OF SCHOOLS GULLIVER | ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2013-2014 21 “Seeing students discover things about themselves or the world around them is such a thrill.” 22 Spotlight on the New Head of Schools New Head of Schools Frank Steel joined the Gulliver family in 2014 and is thrilled to be a Raider, overseeing school operations. He and his wife of 30 years, Betsy, are enjoying the Miami lifestyle, culture and weather after a lifetime of living in chilly Philadelphia. A self-described lifelong educator, Steel began teaching after college graduation and knew education was his passion and something he wanted to make his vocation. He also is a lifelong learner, something he and Betsy have instilled in their children Hadley (27 years old) and Penn (25 years old). The entire family still takes an annual family trip every year, during which they travel globally to appreciate other beliefs and locales. Recently, Steel reflected on his philosophy and his future goals while appreciatively watching Gulliver students enjoying a new school year outside his office window. How would your previous students and faculty describe you? I believe the families and staff at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy would have three things to say about me. The first is that I am present. I show up at games, plays, special events, parent events, and I know what is going on at school – both in and outside of the classroom. I am truly a part of school life and care about it. I want to be aware of when to celebrate or how to manage difficult circumstances. Second, I am very fair and I am told that I am good listener. I am not one to make snap judgments and always make sure to get lots of information from both sides of the situation before I start making decisions. I also think they would say that I am good at sifting through information and helping find a fair outcome. Finally, being respectful is a trait that others see in me. I really believe everyone should earn respect and give respect. What do you enjoy the most about the education profession? Simply, I am energized by being around young people. My entire career, I have been around preschool through high school students, and it is wonderful. There is nothing like getting to see the 3- and 4-year-olds who wave hello in the hall – I get to be the school-person version of a rock star. activities. Whether a student is strong in drama, art or athletics, it is amazing to be a part of his or her passion. Teachers stay young because they are around good energy all day. Seeing students discover things about themselves or the world around them is such a thrill. Working and learning together is also important. During my career, education has changed from teacher-dominated to teacher as coach. Developments such as the infusion of technology into daily school life, show how the process of learning can even go from student to teacher versus from teacher to student, so that element is very exciting. I like learning, and my personal goal this year is to learn to speak Spanish. I am constantly educating myself, which shows students and teachers the importance of lifelong learning. Being a Head of School has allowed me to learn about so many topics, in and out of the classroom, and I look forward to learning more about Gulliver’s many amazing programs. What are some accomplishments you’re most proud of? When I was head of the Upper School at my prior school, educational research was emerging that showed how to better accommodate students with learning differences. Schools at the time had a choice whether or not to implement the new philosophies, and we chose to be a leader in working to make our high school a more student-centered place. We were able to create systems so that a broader range of very capable students could find success at our school. When I was head of school, it was very gratifying to increase fundraising to the highest level in the school’s history so we could build facilities and provide resources that the students needed. Being able to engage parents and alumni in the fundraising efforts, to get them excited about the school’s future, was very important, too. Finally, I am proud of the personal relationships I developed with students and their families that in some ways you only find out about when departing a school. I was given a lot of nice feedback from both students and parents about the impact I had on their lives – which is priceless. There is so much fun in learning, and I am grateful to be a part of the students’ GULLIVER | ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2013-2014 23 What are some things that appealed to you when you first visited Gulliver’s campuses? Before I visited Gulliver, I could tell just from the position description that the tone and spiritual center of school was really wholesome. Clearly the work of Mrs. K was paramount to the success of the school, and her mission remains so clear. When I arrived on campus for my interviews, I could see and feel everything that was being done was for the good of the students and their development. Everything starts a passion for learning and includes a healthy infusion of fun. People that I met during the process, even though I was in the hot seat for interviews, I felt a mutual desire to connect on a personal and friendly level. What is your philosophy on education? Schools should be seeking ways to help students find and engage in their passion so they understand how they can pursue becoming a master at what they love. Graduates should leave school knowing what they are good at and how to pursue their field so they can take it as far as they want. It’s also important to connect what you do at school with what is happening in students’ real lives. We should never have students asking “is this going to be on the test;” rather, they should be asking how it can be used in their lives. For example, teaching kids how to use social media and become savvy users of technology may give them a better understanding of literature. Also, personal character matters a lot in life. Schools should use opportunities to build character by teaching the differences between right and wrong. It’s easy to pass on knowledge, but it is harder to responsibly use the opportunities presented in school life. 24 I also looked at the signature high school programs and the different ways the school ensures the best and most innovative possible experience. Whether that’s smaller classes for some students so they can have extra focus on learning skills or a biomedical program that allows others to develop a greater breadth and depth of their passion, Gulliver truly has a program that meets the needs of each of our 2,200 students. I was also very impressed with the social spirit of the school, as well as the Raider pride that can be seen during morning announcements or an athletic event. Gulliver is a special place to be, and students know they are lucky to be here. I also really liked that the school is willing to play a strong advocacy role in the private education community. By being a part of the Florida Council of Independent Schools, we are being a good citizen not only to our students but also to others in our state. I am proud to be at a school that institutionally believes in that principle. What are your priorities in year one as head of schools? Two words are guiding me this year, and the first is “understand.” Coming from Philadelphia, Miami is a very different place and I am really excited to be here. However, I am also very cognizant that I am going to need to understand how SPOTLIGHT ON THE NEW HEAD OF SCHOOLS the community works so I can be an effective leader. Gulliver is different in size and structure from my previous school, but both believe foundationally in the same thing – which is educating the whole child to be a lifelong learner. I want to make it clear that I am not coming with a blueprint, but rather a set of beliefs and that we will work together so I can understand the people, place and school first. My second guiding principle is “imagine.” We are trying to imagine the future for Gulliver by looking at what we are doing and how we can do it better. Is there something we haven’t been doing but should be? I have asked each department or division to think about whether there are things we want to consider doing differently and what that might look like. Specifically, I want to be thinking about how we can integrate technology into our curriculum so students can be better engaged and teachers can go deeper into the learning process. I also want to look at social responsibility, which has always been a part of Gulliver. But are there other opportunities that we can include? Personally, when I think of social responsibility, I like to focus on environmentalism and sustainability. For example, when we build buildings on campus, are we being environmentally sensitive? In the more immediate term, we can look at things like recycling. I also want the students to look at entrepreneurship, in the sense that they can better understand the area of their passion or understand their area of coursework. They need to know they can be an agent of change right now, rather than waiting to make a difference. The theatre students can write and direct their own plays. The science students can author more original research more publicly. The student-athletes can work toward playing at the next level. I want students to know they can make a difference today. The bottom line is: I’m so excited to be here on so many levels. My wife and I are very happy to be here and to be totally engaged in school life. I am so excited to wake up and come to school everyday, and I am so charged up and happy to share the true passion that goes with being a Raider! Gulliver is committed to building its endowment to help develop and ensure the school’s long-term financial security. Endowment funds are important to Gulliver because they relieve the school from having to raise every single dollar needed every year, providing an income source on which the school can depend. As of June 2014, endowments totaled $7,391,874. As an endowment fund donor, you may decide to designate your gift to one of our established endowments or inquire about initiating a new one. Initiating a new endowment has a threshold amount of $25,000, which enables you to create a lasting legacy in your name or in the name of someone you wish to honor or memorialize. The initial gift will never be touched, and since it is invested, it will grow each year. Only interest income from the endowment will be used for the purpose you designate. GULLIVER | ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2013-2014 51 “Thousands of people across the world benefit every day from the brilliant innovations being discovered and fabricated by Gulliver’s engineering program.” 52 Making a Difference: The Impact of Gulliver Prep Engineering Thousands of people across the world benefit every day from the brilliant innovations being discovered and fabricated by Gulliver’s engineering program. From fresh, drinkable water needed in developing countries to scissors that everyone can use regardless of disability, students under the leadership of the engineering and biomedical science department chair, Mr. Claude Charron, have changed lives through this incredible program. In just a little over a decade, the program has blossomed from one engineering class to an international award-winning vocational track. We spoke with Charron about the program. finish, and in her true fashion, she asked me why we didn’t win. At first I thought she was kidding, but I asked if I could get back to her. After researching the teams that placed ahead of us, they all had full engineering programs within their schools. In 2003, with Mrs. K’s encouragement, Hank Langston and I started implementing Project Lead the Way’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum for our 11th and 12th graders. We once again entered the national competition, making it to the final five and flying to Washington, D.C. We won the competition for our carry-on suitcase that could go through airport security without having to be opened. We returned, and I was sure Mrs. K was going to be thrilled, but her only question was whether anyone was actually going to use the suitcase! She always challenged me and our program to get better. How did the engineering program evolve? In 1997, when I arrived at Gulliver, I came to teach physics at the Prep. I would ask my students what they wanted to be when they grew up and some would say engineer. But then it was always followed with a blank stare when I questioned what specialty they would like to pursue, such as electrical or mechanical engineering. I knew we needed to start an afterschool program to help them explore their options. Thus JETS (Junior Engineering Technical Society) was born, and we began competing locally. The kids had fun and did well, but in 2001 we decided to up the ante. We entered the National Engineering Design Challenge with a goal of solving a problem from beginning to end. We worked with a boy who was under 10 years old who experienced difficulty and challenges riding a bicycle. So, we created a bike he could use, teaching him how to ride a two-wheeler. Our team placed sixth out of 35 teams, which was great for a first experience. We all came back excited. I couldn’t wait to tell Mrs. Krutulis about our GULLIVER | ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2013-2014 53 How does the engineering curriculum compare to other STEM schools? In 2006 Gulliver earned a national certification for our engineering program, which better prepares students in 9th to 12th grades for a career in STEM with help from the Project the Lead Way curriculum. Since 2010, Gulliver has been a model school: When other Florida high schools want to start a STEM program, their administrators and teachers come to Gulliver to learn how to be successful. I am also a master teacher for the 11th and 12th grade courses, so each summer I travel the country for a total of six weeks mentoring other teachers to help better engage their students. We have successfully implemented STEM throughout the Gulliver campuses, and many of our graduates find themselves excused from entry-level college engineering classes due to their Gulliver experience. How is the Gulliver engineering program contributing to society? We wanted to bring a culture of invention to Gulliver, and we determined the key to success was finding a way we could make a difference in people’s lives. Our mission was community service – not necessarily winning competitions. However, participating in the National Engineering Design Challenge has proven to be an amazing process in which Gulliver students have placed in the top five in the nation during seven of the last nine years and have won the coveted competition during two of those years. During the last three years, we have continued to focus on helping people and competing in robotics, but we wanted to shift to creating products that help with sustainable environments. We began creating a device to compete in the Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge, which we won in 2012 with our LiTreS (liquid treatment system). LiTreS is a portable filtration system that removes bacteria, pathogens and viruses from locally available water, making it safe to drink. Currently, there are six LiTreS water systems being used on a daily basis in the Philippines, Haiti, Nigeria and the Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It has a patent pending, and the main goal is to provide thousands of these units to help several developing nations with water issues. 54 MAKING A DIFFERENCE: THE IMPACT OF GULLIVER PREP ENGINEERING In 2013, the students won the international competition again with the Eco-Cooker, which is a portable, inexpensive device that changes manure into useable gas energy – also meant for use in developing countries. Winning these competitions provides seed money and, combined with funds from our generous their knowledge. We also have a strong parent support base that attends our showcases twice a year and provide financial support, which allows the students to use their creativity continue to create these life-changing inventions. donors, allows us to help so many people throughout the world on a daily basis. Mrs. K’s philosophy was not to look at us as academically privileged, but that we should work hard and give back to the community with this amazing synergy of energy. These engineering students are true leaders today. Every year they take up the challenge of the classes before them, leading to amazing results and helping make the world a better place. The best part is that I can’t take the credit; I am simply steering the ship. This success is student led. How does the Gulliver community assist with your students’ success? Many of the projects that the engineering department has been able to develop and implement for our end users have been made possible thanks to the continued support of parents and the community. Their devoted time and financial support have been a key ingredient to our overall success. Of course, our alumni are also always a great addition to our program, because the students can clearly see how their involvement can lead to a successful future in the engineering field. What’s next for the engineering program? One of reasons our projects are successful is that we talk to the people who are going to use our inventions to see if they will be practical. We bring experts into class to find out exactly how we can help them fix a problem and spend half the year on the design process. We then spend one quarter building the device and then one quarter making sure it works. This year, I am looking forward to working side by side with the business program so we can combine the skill sets necessary for the real world. We will combine engineering with marketing and working on a business plan. What is the greatest achievement of the engineering program? Helping other people in need and encouraging student growth is what I hold as most important. Seeing the students’ passion and character develop is by far the most rewarding part. Our graduates are engaged and challenged in college and beyond, and they can succeed in a STEM career because it makes them happy. Fourteen years ago, we had two graduating seniors apply to a college engineering program. Today, we have more than 100 Gulliver alumni who are licensed engineers and who are more than happy to come back and share GULLIVER | ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2013-2014 55 A Celebration of Generosity Commitment On November 14, 2013, Gulliver held a special reception in the Shah Family Library Media Center to thank and honor donors who contributed $2,000 or more to Gulliver during the previous school year. This reception served as an opportunity to bring together lead supporters from throughout our school community in an intimate setting to extend personal thanks and gratitude. The evening was graciously sponsored by BNY Mellon Wealth Management. “I am lucky to work with a company where philanthropy and community service are taken seriously, and each employee is encouraged to get involved in volunteer work,” said Libby Witherspoon ‘87, a current parent and Gulliver trustee who is a senior director and portfolio manager with BNY Mellon Wealth Management. “We at BNY Mellon applaud the generosity of the lead donors and commend their support of the school. Their commitment to Gulliver truly makes a difference in the experience of each and every student.” Witherspoon also thanked Gulliver for teaching her the importance of giving back. “Supporting Gulliver is just one way BNY Mellon demonstrates its corporate social responsibility and commitment to our community,” she added. “We are thrilled to partner with Gulliver.” 56 3RD ANNUAL DONOR RECEPTION GULLIVER | ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2013-2014 57 KELLY MULLIGAN For more than 30 years, Coach Kelly Mulligan has been the heart and soul of Gulliver Tennis. During her tenure, the boys’ Announcing the 2014 Induction Class Gulliver’s rich athletic history, stretching back decades, led to the formation of the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. Spearheaded by the Gulliver Athletic and Alumni departments, the Hall recognizes and honors coaches, administrators, student athletes, athletic teams and friends of the athletic program of Gulliver Schools who have made significant contributions to the advancement and reputation of the program, while demonstrating a high degree of sportsmanship, leadership and character. SHUNDRA COLZIE ‘99 Shundra began her Gulliver Prep athletic career as a seventh grader while attending Gulliver Academy. She played basketball and softball from grades 7 through 12, and volleyball throughout high school, at the varsity level. As a result, she earned 16 varsity letters. She also earned spots on 14 Miami Herald All-Dade First Teams. Shundra was a member of three athletic teams that together won some 400 games and matches, and was named the Miami-Dade Athlete of the Year in 1998 and 1999. After graduating from Gulliver Prep in 1999, Shundra attended Santa Fe College for two years on a softball scholarship. In 2001, she received a softball scholarship to Florida State University, where she graduated in 2003 with a major in elementary education. 58 team advanced for the first time to the state championship tournament in 1984, and the girls’ team did so in 1985. Although the 1980s didn’t see any tennis state championships, in 1994, Kelly coached the girls’ team to Gulliver’s first tennis state championship. In 1997, her team won Gulliver’s second state championship. The new millennium brought in many more titles. Kelly coached the girls’ team to state titles in 2006, 2007, 2013 and 2014. The boys’ team won its first team title in 2003, won the title again in 2005 and went on to a five-year winning streak from 2007-2011. Back-to-back state boys’ tennis titles in 2013 and 2014 brought Gulliver’s total state titles under Coach Mulligan to 15. She has received numerous Tennis Coach of the Year awards, from The Miami Herald, the Florida Dairy Farmers and National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association. One of her career highlights came in 2011, when the National High School Coaches Association named her its Boys’ Tennis National Coach of the Year. BRYAN SHARKEY ‘05 Bryan began competing for the Gulliver Prep Track Team in seventh grade, and holds school records in the 1,600-meter, 3,200-meter, 5-kilometer, half marathon and 4x800-meter relay. He was a two-time state champion in the 4x800, undefeated crosscountry team state champion in 2001 and the first person (and still the only person) to win the 800-1600-3200-meter triple at the Miami-Dade County track championships. Bryan was the first individual runner to ever be named to first team all-Dade cross-country team all four years of high school. The Miami Herald named him cross-country and track and field distance Dedication ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME runner of the year twice, and in 2005, he earned the title of Gulliver Athlete of the Year. He was named the 2004-2005 Miami-Dade County Athlete of the Year. Following his success at Gulliver, Bryan attended Princeton University, where he was a four-time Ivy League cross-country varsity runner. In 2007, he competed in the pre-Olympic international track competition in China. In 2013 alone, he had 25 first place victories. Bryan continues to run professionally; his personal best finish was first place at the 2013 Palm Beach Marathon. MATT SULLIVAN ‘88 During his four years at Gulliver, Matt lettered in three sports – football, soccer and baseball. In football, he was a running back, defensive back and kicker for the 1987 state-ranked football team. As a senior, he gained more than 1,500 all-purpose yards and was named first team all-county and second team all-state by The Miami Herald. In soccer, he was Miami-Dade County’s leading scorer, with 29 goals his junior year, and earned first team all-county and first team all-state honors. As a senior, Matt led his team to a second consecutive district title and again earned all-county and all-state honors. In baseball, he was a two-year starter at third base for the state-ranked Raiders. Matt went on to play college football at Ithaca College, where he started four years as the team’s placekicker. He went on to set numerous school records, including longest field goal (50 yards), most field goals in a season and career and most points scored in a season. In 1992, Matt graduated as a two-time National Champion (1988 and 1991) and was the school’s all-time leading scorer with 254 points. PAUL WALLACE ‘84 Paul was a member of the Gulliver Swim Team throughout his high school career, and was named first team all-Dade and all-state for four consecutive years. He also was Miami-Dade Swimmer of the Year in 1982, 1983 and 1984, and set two state records for 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke in 1983. Paul, a swimming state runner-up all four years of high school, also won seven individual state titles. At the University of Florida, he earned All-American Honors from 1985 through 1988, was named an Academic All-American in 1985 and was named SEC Swimmer of the Year in 1986. He won the World Swimming Championships gold medal in 4x100 freestyle relay in Spain, and set a record in the same category at the Pan Pacific Games in Japan. He also earned two gold medals at the U.S. Open Swimming Championships and earned a silver medal in the 200-meter individual medley at the 1987 Pan Am Games. “Gulliver Schools is very proud of the Hall of Fame. GULLIVER | ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING 2013-2014 95 96 ALUMNI EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES Alumni Reunion Weekend – A Record-Breaking Weekend Celebrating 60 years of Raider Pride, the 2014 alumni reunion was a recordbreaker. Back to Miami and The Biltmore Hotel for the second year in a row, the reunion drew its biggest attendance ever, with more than 300 alumni and guests participating in reunion weekend activities. Keeping in tradition with Gulliver’s annual reunion, alumni from every class year were invited to attend. Spanning four decades of alumni, the classes celebrating special anniversaries included the classes of 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999 and 2004. A special contest offering a free Saturday cabana to the anniversary class with the most attendees drew serious competition. The 10thanniversary class of 2004 took the lead early and kept it all the way through to win the competition and claim the title of “Biggest Reunion Class” in Gulliver alumni history. Celebrating their 35th anniversary, the class of 1979 received special recognition for being the first senior class to graduate from the Prep Campus. Attendees Denise Johnson Stephens, Bill Grossman, Greg Martini and Emily White recalled classes were held at the FIU campus the first few weeks of school because the Prep was still under construction. The reunion also drew the most out-of-town attendees ever. While taking their reunion class photos, the following alumni were recognized for traveling the farthest to celebrate with their classmates; Emily White ‘79 – New York, NY; Karina Bowles Bartlett ‘84 – San Francisco, California; Claudia Bowles Walter ‘89 – New Albany, Ohio; Benita De Mirza ‘94 – Southborough, Massachusetts; Karl Garcia ‘99 – Washington, DC; and Jessica Reeves ‘04 – Tacoma, Washington. The Prep was bustling Friday night from alumni attending the welcome reception. Activities started at the Prep’s Shah Family Library Media Center. In addition to catching up with classmates and seeing all the enhancements to the school, alumni enjoyed sharing special memories with current and past faculty and staff, including Jorge Dieppa, Peg Escovar, Leann Kurzner, Hank Langston, Ruben Valencia and Linda Fitzgerald. After the reception, alumni were invited to the gym for a special alumni pep rally. Alumnus and Gulliver’s Activities Director Danielle Bowen ‘94 led the activities, which filled the gym with laughter and cheers from alumni as they watched their classmates compete in a variety of games. Saturday night festivities began with a warm welcome from our director of schools, John Krutulis, and a special video celebrating Gulliver’s 60th anniversary. John also introduced Gulliver’s new head of schools, Frank Steel. In addition to brief remarks, Frank announced Gulliver’s expanded board commencing with the 2014 -2015 school year. Alumni board members in attendance included Tony Figueroa Cisneros ‘94, Emilio Nunez ‘83, Charlie Phelan ‘85, Swapnil Shah ‘94 and Libby Witherspoon ‘87. Immediately following the short program, alumni took to the dance floor with top hits from across the decades. After last call in the ballroom, the party continued at The 19th Hole after-party, where the latenight DJ kept alumni dancing until closing time!
