That is why our customers choose Bauwerk Parkett. We understand that this is what they want and give them a selection of 320 types of parquet flooring in our 24 different product lines, 11 types of wood, 57 colours, 6 surface treatments and 6 structures. Talking about numbers: Did you know that in October 2014 we reached the one million mark with Villapark, introduced in 2010? That we produce four million square metres of parquet flooring every year? In real terms, this amount corresponds to a 6-metre wide parquet road that stretches from St. Margrethen right up to Paris! For us, parquet is much more than just a form of flooring that is measured and laid out in square metres. Parquet is the platform for the most varied of lifestyles, ways of life as well as the living and working environments of our customers. That is why we are constantly developing our products – with an innovative power that has always been an intrinsic part of Bauwerk. We have made quantum leaps over the past 80 years. Through our pioneering achievements and our world-firsts we have helped to revolutionise the treatment of parquet flooring and wood. For example with the production of the first mosaic parquet in 1936, the development of the first dispersion adhesive in 1957 or the successful introduction of the world’s first 2-layer prefabricated parquet in 1976. In 2011 we set a milestone in design with our Vintage Edition. Countless other such steps in development have made us one of the leading manufacturers of parquet flooring in Europe. Even in this edition of "Life’s Work", we are proud to present another unique development: B-Protect® is the name behind Bauwerk’s invisible technology, which reliably protects the surface and preserves the unrivalled natural beauty of wood. The spirit of innovation is within over 1000 employees who work every day with a passion for quality. On the following pages, you can meet three of these remarkable employees who are based in St. Margrethen, where they have been making healthy parquet flooring with great care and passion for many years. In addition to inspiring stories about lifestyles, people and moments, we would also like to keep you up to date with news, information about trends and offer you interesting facts about wood and the Bauwerk company. We hope you enjoy reading this exciting edition and we can assure you that the next quantum leap is in the making. Ansgar Igelbrink President Bauwerk Brand, St. Margrethen Bauwerk Expertise | 5 I have been handling wood for over 25 years I am a part of the tradition Peter Zellweger Head of the Semi-finished Production, Drying and Wood Yard (at Bauwerk since 1989) "All that we have achieved over the past 25 years in the world of parquet flooring is simply immense. The range has been continuously extended and the processes constantly improved. However, despite the numerous new technologies, working by hand is still extremely important in the processing of wood just as it always has been. This is surely also the reason why after handling wood for so many years I still get so much pleasure from my work. The feel and smell of the wood, and at the end seeing what wonderful products it can make, fascinates me every day without fail." At Bauwerk innovative power has a tradition Ernst Göhner laid the foundation for our traditional Swiss company over 80 years ago and his pioneering spirit lives on in the numerous Bauwerk innovations. The company’s innovative strength finds expression in regular new product developments as well as Bauwerk’s active support of the concept of innovation at Swiss universities. Our staff at Bauwerk have a passion for wood and its precise processing. Wood has dominated the company’s history since the beginning: Already in the early days, Ernst Göhner drew on his wood processing expertise to manufacture wooden bodyworks for the German car industry, earning himself a place in automobile history. In 1935, Bauwerk developed the patented mosaic parquet. Nine years later, production was moved to St. Margrethen. Over the following decades, the company developed into the leading Swiss parquet specialist. Bauwerk Expertise | 7 Quality is crucial in my line of work I can see and feel whether a product fulfils Bauwerk’s standards Delveta Zeric Sorter (at Bauwerk since 1993) Bauwer stands for quality – that is why we check every single floorboard by hand "It means a lot to me to feel the wood under my fingers every day and to know that I am responsible for the quality of Bauwerk Parkett’s products. It is enjoyable to work with this natural raw material and I like imagining how at some point in time, little children will be playing and racing their toy cars over this flooring. I have been working as a Sorter at Bauwerk for over 20 years, and during this time a million floorboards have passed through my hands. But I am sure that not one of them was exactly the same as another; each has its own unique beauty. That is what makes my work exciting every day." BAUWERKQUALITY DEVELOPMENT PRODUCTION CONSULTING/ SERVICE LAYING In our production, we guarantee Bauwerk quality by combining expertise with the latest technology. Even with such advanced production equipment, it is absolutely essential to have manual and visual controls by experienced employees who have a great passion for wood. Their expertise and intuitive flair are invaluable for the quality. Bauwerk deliberately only entrusts this kind of work to women, because several studies show that: Women have a quicker eye, see details better, note mistakes quicker and can work at a high level of concentration for longer. To guarantee the same level of quality for each customer, Bauwerk does not just pay attention to the quality in its production, it also wants to ensure the highest standards throughout the entire value chain. That is why Bauwerk always basis its quality on the four pillars of development, manufacture, consultation/service and installation. Bauwerk Expertise | 9 Healthy living products have top priority Preserving the naturalness of wood is a labour of love for me Christoph Schneider Quality Assurance (at Bauwerk since 2001) Bauwerk’s products are already among the healthiest on the world market. As a trained carpenter, wood and nature are very important to me. It is my personal mission to fashion healthy and sustainable wood for the homes of our customers and to guarantee the naturalness of our products – not just as an employee of Bauwerk, but also as the socio-ecologically aware father of four children." Parquet – for a pleasant, healthy living environment With the "healthy living" certification, Bauwerk is the first parquet manufacturer to guarantee to provide its customers with a pleasant living atmosphere without undesirable emissions polluting the air. Its Sentinel-Haus certification allows the company to offer a unique guarantee: House builders and their families may rest assured that all products in the Bauwerk range come without undesirable volatile organic compounds, ensuring that there is no concealed discharge of noxious substances into the ambient air. Choose a healthy living environment that complies with MINERGIE-ECO® standards. 10 | B-Protect® B-Protect® Bauwerk-Technology Cleverpark B-Protect®, Oak Farina Designing your living area means finding the perfect combination with the most diverse surfaces, colours and sizes – creating a natural interaction, which reflects your own style and gives the room a unique look. More and more people are creating their own personal aesthetic freedom with the finest materials and textures, exclusive lines and elegant colours – their small oasis in the everyday hustle and bustle of life. Refined tranquility and spacious areas – a uniquely relaxing but also vibrant atmosphere. A lounging chair with a matching ottoman by Charles & Ray Eames, chairs with light chrome frames skilfully create soothing exclusive accents. Different materials such as natural stone, smooth stainless steel or cool exposed concrete catch our eye with their subtle contrasts. The almost 3-metre long Silverline floorboards really bring out the uniqueness of wood as a material with their distinctive grading and deeply brushed surfaces. Finished with natural oils, they shimmer in a soft silver or warm golden hues. Torben Hansen and his team are responsible for producing the boards of the Master Edition. Light brings the uniquely processed surfaces, materials and properties to life. This creates a kind of energy, an eternal interplay full of individuality transforming each floor into an original limited edition. Using the two ingenious and unconventional formats that the Hannes Wettstein Studio created with Formpark, we end up with patterns that fit in perfectly with the space and personality of the home-owners. 18 | Exceptional Exclusivity The large-size floorboards integrate perfectly into the surrounding architecture. Space and materials working together. Master Edition, Oak Nougat Lively Design Creative nostalgia and a timeless design Patina, aged floorboards, rough brickwork - everything is used and worn and yet timelessly modern. Vintage, the trend towards the used, reminiscing over days gone by, is the gateway to freely combine styles and materials, a homage to the charm of imperfection. Surprisingly bright colour accents, curved shapes, black and white contrasts with glass and chrome accents or the reserved blue and white of a retail outlet – colours, patterns and laying options open up a thousand possibilities for the individual design of living and working areas. With the Vintage Edition, Bauwerk has literally floored this current trend. Working together with the interior designer Virginia Maissen, they have created uniquely versatile parquet floorboardsthat can be freely combined and radiate an incomparable joie de vivre and warmth. With surfaces inspired by the typography of newspapers, beautiful old Persian rugs or the battered planks of an artist’s workshop, we are enraptured by expressive flooring that is full of charm and dancing colours – for at home, in a bar, retail outlet or modern office. 28 | Lively Design Two colours, lots of styles, patterns and textures. Oak Wood is a wonderful natural material which humans have trusted and relied on since time immemorial. Wood lives and breathes, it displays unique characteristics. Those seeking something special, personal and authentic will understand the crucial role played by natural wood. With its diversity and vitality, its scent, colours and warm surface, wood invites you to a sensual feast. Its diversity provides for a broad spectrum of colours and shapes. The real beauty of well-processed wood lies in its structure and its inherent irregularities. The aura of natural wood imbues every home with a cosy and warm ambience. Oak Tabacco Cherry american Permanent colour change through the natural UV radiation in light Doussie Exotic woods in particular can change colour very quickly and rather strongly. Maple or beech become darker in shade, and visibly more yellow, while thermally treated ash becomes noticeably lighter. The colour differences thereby become more balanced to each other, and the colour contrasts become weaker. The colours of a floor that is exposed to strong sunlight, for example, change more quickly. Jatoba Walnut american Oak smoked Acacia steamed Wood is a natural product that slowly develops its natural colour. This takes place above all in the first period, and highlights the beauty and character of a real wood floor. Wood can become darker or lighter with age, or can change its shade. Coloured wood These woods change their colour somewhat differently. Sunlight has hardly any effect on the colouring matter. It does, however, have an effect on the underlying wood substrate, whereby colours (e.g. white) become slightly yellow – exactly the same effect as with non-coloured wood. The dark colours protect the wood better, however, and the surface is less affected than the corresponding, non-coloured surface. Thermally-treated wood Sunlight strongly affects colour changes, and the change becomes visible more quickly than with untreated wood. The thermally treated products become noticeably lighter. Smoked wood Smoked woods hardly change their colour at all. The smoked oak becomes very slightly lighter and somewhat more golden with this procedure. Alternating colour changes as a result of light sources and the incident light The temperature of the light changes our perception and influences our moods. Cold light has a rather refreshing and invigorating effect, and is therefore often used in work situations. Warm light, on the other hand, creates a feeling of security and provides a cosy atmosphere, and is used in bedrooms and living rooms. As the light temperature changes in the course of the day, our perception of the floor will also be affected. Light creates atmosphere Light has literally thousands of facets, because light is both colour and temperature. Light changes our perceptions and affects out moods. It is therefore important to consider the factor of light in the design of the surroundings. To demonstrate the influence from different light sources for you, Bauwerk worked together with the lighting professionals at Zumtobel to develop an absolutely new and innovative daylight simulator. Twenty lamps illuminate an imposing parquet pyramid and simulate a normal day’s light progression through the use of different light sources and light temperatures. 82 | Dazzling References DAZZLING References Bauwerk Parkett around the world Bauwerk Parkett is the stage for the most diverse of residential, business and working environments around the world. Parquet Flooring in the Bathroom | 87 PARQUET FLOORING IN THE BATHROOM New feeling of wellbeing A bathroom finished in soothing natural tones and wooden features, always feels pleasantly warm and welcoming. If the walls and floor are made from real wood, then the perceived warmth of the room is as much as two degrees higher than the actual temperature. So that you may enjoy the pleasure of walking barefoot on the parquet flooring in your bathroom for a long time to come, there are a few points worth mentioning: › The most suitable types of woods are hard woods such as oak or even exotic woods, because when they get wet, they do not tend to fade or swell very much Studiopark, Oak smoked, natural oiled › The floorboards should be installed by a specialist using an adhesive for full area bonding › The initial polishing and care work should also be carried out by a specialist › It must be ensured that there is sufficient ventilation in the bathroom › Standing water should be wiped up quickly after every bath or shower 88 | Sustainability Bauwerk Sustainability Anybody who works with wood develops a special intuition for having a responsible approach to nature and the environment. Under the motto of "The symbiosis of man and nature", Bauwerk is dedicated to matters concerning environmental responsibility, healthy living and social ethics. This means, among other things, that we › only use wood and materials that have been sustainably grown or produced › avoid creating pollution throughout the entire process: from the wood into the bedroom › maintain a fair partnership with customers, suppliers and their subcontractors and take our social responsibility seriously › are a responsible and reliable partner for our employees › produce high quality parquet flooring and related products that create a healthy living environment, which means they are natural, quiet and controlled. Macherin Izabela Boloz describes her masterpiece as a "declaration of war against the pull of gravity" and wants to challenge the existing forms we expect to see with her teasingly provocative alternatives. www.izabelaboloz.com Photo: ZVG Studio Zimoun Breathe in the sea air Art and architecture, hand in hand: As part of the Architectures Vives 2014 festival, NAS Architecture have created a shelter that is both fascinating and useful. Small square mirrors were attached on the front of the wooden construction and they swing freely in the fresh sea breeze. The dancing front facade is meant to emulate the power of the sea but it also radiates calm, strength and a sense of security. It was not just the jury that was impressed by the innovative realisation of the pavilion, but also the residents of La Grande-Motte see the "Breath Box" as an integral part of their seascape. Young designer Holly Bradshaw wants to combat such hardships once and for all. With the "Pascal Stool" she has created a simple but brilliant idea. Its special feature: The light above the chair automatically switches on and off when you sit down and get up. This also means that the electricity for the light is only used when it is needed. Another bright idea: The ergonomically designed seat is filled with layered foam and wooden rods that compress to activate the light. So the chair is not only energy-efficient, it is also comfortable!
