Many brands, such as Barneys, Diane von Furstenberg and Vertu, have the only such store in Nevada, and are among a handful in the entire country. While retailers are in the swing of their fall 2014 looks, it's still hot out in Vegas, and prices are being slashed on summer fashions—now's a great time to splurge on last season's covetable bag or apparel in lighter fabrics that still look great now. We sat down with Lhuillier at the debut of her fall 2014 collection; read on to discover what pieces she considers key for the season, her tips on packing light and what she does to quickly feel at home in a new destination. FIND MORE STYLE AT WHERETRAVELER.COM LV-WM_140900_where now.indd 10 PHOTO CREDIT GOES HERE —Jennifer McKee 8/15/14 2:22:15 PM Where do you find the inspiration for your designs? I draw inspiration from a lot of different places. My favorite thing to do is travel, and when I go on these different trips, I just get so inspired, whether it’s a beautiful art piece I’m looking at, people-watching on the street or a beautiful fabric that I see. The ideas just start, and it happens. So it’s usually from traveling, but also just living. I’m drawn to beautiful things. (THIS PAGE) ©HL GROUP/DAN LECCA. (OPPOSITE) ©HL GROUP/LISA ROMEREIN What was the inspiration behind the fall 2014 collection? It was the mysterious side of Monique. The season is very dramatic, it has a lot of darker shades—midnight, black and metallics. It’s also sleeker. I tried to keep the collection dark and mysterious, but I also added some pops of color in the fuchsia and the lush pink. In fall I like to have the collection be a little more dramatic than romantic. I feel that women need that darker side. A lot of people know you for bridal. Are you expanding the ready-to-wear collection? I started my company 17 years ago. The first seven years, I was only doing wedding gowns. Those were a great start for me, but then I wanted to dress women throughout their lives rather than just on that special day, which is how the ready-to-wear started. Now, I want to dress her earlier in the day, so you see more separates and what I call “high day” looks in the collection. It then goes into evening and gala gowns at night. Another new thing for me is shoes; this is my second season doing shoes. What pieces or trends do you think are key for fall? I think a great lace shoe bootie is a must in the wardrobe. I also think a great cocktail dress with a great fit and a bit of shimmer is key for the STYLE LOCATOR ALLSAINTS Forum Shops at Caesars Palace (702) 893-4800 us.allsaints.com The fall collection from Monique Lhuillier is more mysterious than romantic and features dramatic pairings of black with pops of fuchsia and pink. wardrobe. The final component is the statement gowns—I love seeing women put that effort in and transform for that one evening and let fantasy back in. What is the most important piece or pieces to your own personal style? A great-fitting cocktail dress is a signature of mine. I feel like it’s so versatile, it takes you to so many different places. I travel a lot and know these pieces serve a great purpose. What are your best travel tips? To over-pack is just a drag. I always say plan your wardrobe two days before you leave and style it out with the shoes, the belts, etc., so that way you’re very well-edited and it doesn’t take up a lot of space. If you’re organized, it makes traveling a breeze. What is the first thing you do when you arrive at your new destination? I like to unpack and get everything hung, and then I take a walk and see my surroundings—the neighborhood, check out what sort of things there are to do in the hotel. I like to discover immediately. How do you make a hotel room feel more like home? I bring my music with me; that makes me feel at home. I also bring a fragrance with me, whether it be a candle or an air spray, so it smells like me and my environment. If it’s a long stay, I order fresh flowers, which automatically makes it feel more cozy. What are you listening to right now? I listen to a lot of Pharrell. I also listen to Coldplay. I like to dance, so I have a lot of dance mixes—I love David Guetta, Justin Timberlake. some favorites. I love going to Venice and eating the delicious food—it’s so beautiful. I also love going to Capri and staying at the J.K.Place Hotel; it feels like your own private beach house. We also love going to Aspen, Colo., which is only a two-hour flight from Los Angeles—we’re a very big outdoors family, so we ski a lot in the winter; in the summer we like to bike and hike. But I could go on. I also love Paris. Aisle or window seat? If I travel with somebody, like my husband, I like the window seat; but if I travel alone, I like the aisle. I like to be independent and not cross over anybody and bother anybody. What’s one thing you can’t be without when you travel? My iPhone, because I can take pictures with it, I’m always connected—if somebody needs me, I’m very accessible. I have my music, my pictures and it just keeps me on track. What’s your favorite vacation spot? Too many to mention! Q& A with Francesca Amfitheatrof, Design Director, Tiffany & Co. — By Jennifer McKee A graduate of London’s Central Saint Martin’s and Royal College of Art, Francesca Amfitheatrof turned heads developing jewelry for Chanel, Marni and Fendi, and has sold her designs internationally at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Colette in Paris. She’s brought a new aesthetic to the United States’ largest luxury jewelry company with the Tiffany T collection, the first completely new collection launched there in decades. What, to you, were the most crucial design elements for the Tiffany T collection? What inspired the collection? “T” felt like a natural jumping-off point for my work here, a very exciting beginning. “T” pays homage to the Tiffany name, but it also has a verticality and angularity that I associate with the energy and intensity of New York. Tiffany T is sculptural and bold and very closely linked to the architecture of this city. There is a lot of New York in Tiffany T, and by that I mean the relentless movement, optimism and creativity you find on these streets. This is a place of courage and reinvention that constantly sparks creativity. Honestly, I can’t think of a more exciting place I could possibly be. on paper. I love those initial drawings, when anything is possible and your mind is wide open. I like to start with a sketch to give the design process a human element, a real touch. The Tiffany & Co. style is iconic. How do you create an entirely new collection that stands out but is true to Tiffany’s heritage? The Tiffany woman has a spring in her step. She makes her own rules and she doesn’t conform. Tiffany T is first and foremost modern and makes no apologies for that. It’s for the cool girl about town who’s well-informed and has a handle on what’s happening, what’s now. She’s clever and smart and is very certain of herself and her sensuality. What I love about Tiffany T too, though, is that it’s democratic. It’s an attitude, not an age. What do you like best about being part of Tiffany & Co.? Tiffany has always been a company of great innovators, great dreamers who are constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with design. This frame of mind links directly back to the company’s founder, Charles Lewis Tiffany, who was an entrepreneur long before anyone even knew what that term meant. He was a firebrand, a risk taker, someone who constantly did things no one else had the courage to try. At Tiffany, we carry forward that spirit of risk and vision. We’re unfettered by historical styles or schools of design, rather we create with a freedom to make—and break—our own rules. Divided into 12 choreographed dance numbers, the show is composed of a series of vignettes, interlaced in a rich, dynamic and eclectic program. The music is a combination of original compositions and traditional songs such as the world-famous “La Bamba.” Salsa, Danzon, contemporary dance and Jarocho, the original Veracruz dance, confront each other, resulting in a beautiful combination of cultures and traditions. Aoki’s VegAs When you were a kid, did you know you wanted to be in the music world? I did. I was a tween when I got into hardcore and that whole sound and movement. I really felt that music would be part of my life. [World-rek nowned dJ and record producer] Always an active participant in the music scene, Steve Aoki played in bands, wrote for a music ‘zine and put on more than 450 shows in college before starting his own label, Dim Mak. His electronic style has made him a popular DJ the world over, especially in Las Vegas—and in turn, Aoki calls MGM club Hakkasan “my favorite nightclub to play in the world.” His album “Neon Future” comes out this month. When was the first time you came to Vegas? Probably around 2005. I played the Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay. I was playing hip hop—I was a DJ, like I am now, but I didn’t have any music. I was just DJing what people wanted to hear. It was honestly tougher, because the DJ back in that time period was anonymous. Your job was purely to keep the whole place dancing. If you played At Hakkasan the wrong song and people left the dance floor, you might get kicked off at any given moment. As an artist, I’m not thinking like that, I like to introduce songs that no one’s heard, and I might At Wet Republic On Discovering Vegas introduce four of them in a row if I want to. What do you like best about performing in Vegas now? I really feel like it’s my backyard when I’m playing at Hakkasan and Wet Republic. It’s fun—I’m not really nervous or scared if something was to happen when I couldn’t control, because that’s when you get nervous, as an artist—there are certain variables that you can’t control, like where your set gets [bleeped] because of some technical issues with sound or whatever it might be. But even if that happens, I just feel more comfortable there. I’ve been playing at Hakkasan for a couple of years now. It’s got the best sound, it’s got the best room, a good team. And the crowd’s always different. That’s another great thing about Vegas—each weekend you’re playing to a After His Final Set I like gambling, so if I have a good crew of people I might go play some blackjack, or go play some late-night poker, which I used to do all the time. I’ll sit by the poker table and play some poker. different ways to push your sound, your music, your culture. Whether it’s doing a ‘zine, whether it’s putting on shows, producing shows for other artists, whether it’s being in a band. When I was in college, I was just very involved in my community. I was putting on shows, then I started a label—it was a very natural kind of progression. What’s the meaning behind your label's name? Dim Mak is a martial art move otherwise known as the Touch of Death. My childhood hero was Bruce Lee, and I wanted to have some sort of connection with him. There’s this mystery that he was killed by the Dim Mak, and the mystery holds that he was able to do Dim Mak, so that was my way of paying homage. I’m still exploring. I just moved here (in October 2013). I’m hoping that Las Vegas will become more progressive like Los Angeles and start bringing in some more health-conscious options. Whole Foods is a must go-to for me. MGM Grand has a lot of good restaurants. Joel Robuchon is obviously one of the top-tier restaurants here. I also like Greens and Proteins, I like the shakes there. Plans for the Future When I moved to Vegas, I had a meeting with Tony Hsieh right away. I wanted to meet the man who is revolutionizing Las Vegas. I want to be a part of that community. » For Steve Aoki's full interview and itinerary, go to wheretraveler.com where ® Local Guides. Worldwide. IMAGES ©HAKKASAN.
