NLUPC is the joint-venture company established in July by Ayala’s energy investment arm AC Energy Holdings Inc, the Philippine Investment Alliance for Infrastructure (PINAI), and UPC Philippines Wind Holdco. The company is tasked with developing wind power projects in the province of Ilocos Norte. The groundbreaking ceremony held on September 3 in See page 2 Globe Telecom has made the big move to a greener, modern corporate headquarters in Bonifacio Global City. The 27-storey Globe Tower at the corner of 32nd Street and 7th Avenue is now the main hub of company transactions. It brings together nearly 4,000 employees from several offices in Metro Manila. Prior to the transfer, Globe was based in Mandaluyong, with offices in Valero Telepark, The Professional Tower, and BPI Buendia. Manila Water Vietnam facility now operational “The move to The Globe Tower (TGT) is momentous for us because it is an important component of the company’s transformation journey,” said Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu, of the company’s efforts to further enrich customer experience through its network and IT modernization initiatives. The new Manila Water-operated Kenh Dong water treatment plant in Ho Chi Minh City’s (HCMC) Cu Chi District has begun operations and has started supplying water to city residents with a capacity of 200 million liters per day. The building was inaugurated on August 6 in an intimate event attended by key partners of Globe led by Secretary Gregory Domingo of the Department of Trade and Industry and ABS-CBN Chairman Eugenio Lopez III. They were welcomed by Cu, Globe Chairman Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, and Board Director Fernando Zobel de Ayala. In 2012, Manila Water acquired 47.35% of Kenh Dong Water Supply Joint Stock Co to improve water services in the area where only 50% of the population had been covered by water services. Kenh Dong has a bulk water supply contract with Saigon Water Corporation (Sawaco), a state-owned company that manages the water supply system in the Vietnamese capital. In anticipation of its arrival at BGC, Globe converted a portion of Bonifacio High Street into a theme park complete with product demo booths and displays, interactive games, raffle activities, freebies and food treats, and nightly concert performances from August 2 to 4. A new Globe Store also opened at TGT. Manila Water also owns a 49% stake in the water treatment firm Thu Duc Water BOO Corporation, making the company the largest foreign investor in Vietnam’s water sector, and part-owner of the only existing pair of privately owned water treatment plants in HCMC. See page 4 Green office The construction phase of the tower had been in full swing since the groundbreaking in 2010. The building has a floor plan of more than 70,000 square meters spread across 18 office floors, nine parking levels, two floors of conference rooms, a store and corporate showroom, and a dining level. A large-scale artwork of Jaime Zobel graces the second floor. According to Cu, the building is aligned with the Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) standards, the rating system of the United States Green Building Council. The robust performance of Ayala’s property and banking units, boosted by its increased stake in the latter, primarily drove its strong earnings momentum. Higher earnings of Manila Water and improved performance of its business process outsourcing businesses likewise contributed to Ayala’s profits. Netting out the impact of the accelerated depreciation as a result of Globe’s network modernization, Ayala’s core net income grew even higher to P8.9 billion, a 42-percent improvement year-on-year. The conglomerate’s strong performance was driven by robust equity earnings which reached P9.5 billion, a 24% jump year on year. Ayala’s consolidated revenues likewise increased 21% to P74.6 billion. “The first half broadly turned out as expected as we sustained growth momentum across our key businesses. Our core businesses made great strides in growth and expansion, while our international businesses continued to improve. We are confident this strong performance will carry on this year. The encouraging macroeconomic conditions continue to present opportunities for further investment, and we will continue to take advantage of these moving forward,” FZA noted. Ayala’s balance sheet remained healthy. At the parent level, cash at the end of June amounted to nearly P36 billion, with debt at close to P70 billion. The conglomerate maintained a comfortable gearing level with net debt-to-equity ratio of 0.25 to 1. On a consolidated basis, net debt-to-equity ratio likewise remained comfortable at 0.67 to 1. Ayala declared a cash dividend of P2.40 per share, 20% higher than the regular P2 per share payable on August 12, 2013. For the full disclosure, visit www.ayala.com.ph. They were met by heads of the project proponents and partners, including AC Energy President Eric Francia and CFO Ned Goseco, UPC Chairman Brian Caffyn and Managing Director Troels Carstensen, and Macquarie Managing Director Michael Rodriguez on behalf of PINAI. “Ilocos can really solidify itself as the wind capital of the Philippines,” said Francia to members of the local communities who witnessed the event. “We are very proud to be a partner of the government, both provincial and local, to make this a reality and to maximize the resources that you are very much blessed with in this part of the country.” Governor Marcos expressed full confidence in the project’s impact on the province not only in power generation but also by way of jobs creation and corporate social responsibility programs. “Certainly the area of energy, particularly wind, has been a 2 JAZA, a co-founding member of the ASEAN Business Club, together with Ayala group CEOs Bong Consing, Ernest Cu, and Gerry Ablaza, participated in various discussions at the Network ASEAN Forum held on August 23 in Singapore. Key topics at breakout sessions included aviation, infrastructure, power and utilities, and connectivity, while at plenary, strategy for ASEAN cross-sectoral perspective, drivers of growth in ASEAN economy, and investing in ASEAN’s future were discussed. Forum speakers included Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, AirAsia Founder and Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Bangkok Bank President Chartsiri Sophonpanich, and CIMB Group Chief Executive Nazir Razak. Launched in 2011, the ASEAN Business Club is an initiative of leading businesses in the region to support economic integration and community building. It aims to grow regional networks, serve as a forum for knowledge sharing and advocacy, and become a powerful platform for ASEAN’s businesses to engage with global and regional leaders. genuine windfall for the province and we welcome all the resources, technology, and the production of energy in the province,” she said. “You can count on us for full support. There are many synergies that can be derived, indeed, if public and private partnerships can be launched. We are hopeful that this will provide yet another template and another pioneering effort for Ilocos Norte in renewable energy.” From page 1 Eric Francia says the project presents an opportunity for private-public partnership Ernest Cu, JAZA, Bong Consing, and Gerry Ablaza at the Network ASEAN Forum in Singapore Ariaso underscored the importance of the support of host communities in the success of renewable energy projects: “The impact may not necessarily be early, so it is for all of us, especially the LGUs, to help the project through.” The Caparispisan wind farm, which may have up to 32 wind turbines, is NLUPC’s first project. It has an investment value of up to $250 million, and the initial phase is expected to be connected to the grid by mid-2014. Aside from the Caparispisan wind farm, the joint venture company has a portfolio of over 200 megawatts in wind energy projects under development. Since 2011, AC Energy has committed over $400 million of equity in conventional and renewable energy technologies. PINAI is a P26-billion fund comprised of the GSIS, Dutch pension fund asset manager APG, the Asian Development Bank, and the Macquarie Group. UPC Philippines is a wholly owned company of UPC Renewables Partners, which has nearly 20 years of experience in developing and operating wind farms in Europe, USA, and Asia. Globe has partnered with United Kingdom-based company iVitta Mobile in launching the Globe Seafarer SIM. iVitta specializes in low-cost global telecom solutions for maritime and offshore communities worldwide. The Globe Seafarer SIM enables Filipino mariners to regularly keep in touch with their loved ones back home at affordable call and text rates from anywhere in the world. Seafarers can call home for as low as US$0.20 per minute and send a text message for only US$0.10. Another innovative feature is that subscribers get two numbers in one SIM—an international mobile number and a Philippine Globe mobile number— so there is no need to worry about international long distance charges. Globe and TM subscribers in the Philippines calling the Globe Seafarer SIM are only charged local rates. In July, Filipino seafarers in Spain were the first to enjoy the benefits of this innovative service. The Globe Seafarer SIM Card can be used on most networks using a global interconnection with over 650 GSM networks. 4 PPCI is one of the largest supermarket operators in the Philippines. The mid-market supermarkets will be carried under a new brand. It is part of ALI’s growth strategy for its retailing business in line with the objective of establishing integrated, mixed-use communities across the country. An operator at work at the newly commissioned Kenh Dong water treatment plant in Ho Chi Minh City Bank of the Philippine Islands Vice President Joseph Anthony Alonso says that the bank expects a double digit increase in the number of transactions as more Japanese businessmen invest or expand their existing operations in the Philippines in the coming months. “Major drivers for this are the bank’s strong alliance with its Tokyo-based partners, the country’s strong macroeconomic fundamentals, the success of Japanese firms in the Philippines, and the quality of the Filipino labor force. The country’s population is young and growing, both per capita GDP and per capita income. The Philippines as a growing market attracts Japanese investors,” explains Alonso, who heads the Asian Corporates/PEZA Division. BPI is expected to launch its HouRenSou Business Solutions Guide to help Japanese clients find success in the Philippines. It will contain information on incentives for foreign investors, labor laws, banking corporate solutions, and contact numbers of relevant government agencies. Alonso says that BPI offers corporate advisories to help Japanese investors intelligently decide which corporate solutions could be beneficial to them according to their industry. BPI offers client-matching activities to help them partner with the best local firms. The Ayala group has close to 40 years of partnership with Japanese firms, and has a dedicated Japan Desk serving this client segment since the 1980s. The joint venture company BPI/MS Insurance Corporation, which has been offering non-life insurance to clients for 11 years, is a partnership between BPI and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance. The bank also forged partnerships with Mizuho Corporate Bank, Shizuoka Bank and the Bank of Tokyo Lease and Finance to better serve its Japanese clients. Vol 17 • No 4 • 2013 Manila Water Vietnam facility now operational From page 1 Kenh Dong and Thu Duc currently supply around 35% of Sawaco’s clean water requirements. Both plants plan to expand capacity over the medium term to meet the growing water demand of the city. The company’s first venture in Vietnam was in 2008 when it entered into a performance-based, five-year leakage reduction project with Sawaco. While relatively small, this management contract allowed Manila Water to understand the culture, political, and regulatory environment in the city, as well as develop a progressive working relationship with Sawaco. It also enabled Manila Water to earn the trust of Vietnamese authorities and local partners, paving the way for its expansion in the country. Marikina sewer network In the Philippines, the company continues to expand its sewerage service coverage within the East Zone concession area. Manila Water is ready to put in place a P346-million, 3.2-km sewer network that will benefit 500,000 residents in San Mateo, Marikina, and nearby cities as part of its commitment to its customers and help protect the environment. Under the partnership, Ayala and Ateneo will jointly undertake research on innovation, organize symposia, share experts and thought leaders, provide internship opportunities, and strengthen academe and industry linkages. “What I hope this group will enable us to do is to reinvent this space. How can we use technology to do things more cheaply, give people at lower income levels access to more products and services? How can we take the Philippines to a whole new level and redefine ourselves in the global arena? How can we invent things and change the way we do things so that there’s efficiency created? I hope that together we can help to add value in some way to the country.” The signing ceremony on August 29 was attended by officers from Ayala, Globe’s Kickstart Ventures, Integrated Micro-Electronics, and Manila Water, as well as members of Ateneo’s innovation team and faculty. Ayala and Ateneo are both over a hundred years old, and the two institutions ascribe their endurance in part to continuous transformation while remaining grounded on values. “If there’s a reason for longevity in any institution, it is that ability to keep reinventing oneself with the changing times,” observed JAZA. “In the Ayala group, while we’re businessmen, we do take pride in anything that enhances or aligns ourselves with the national development agenda. Making it easy to enhance lives Now on its fourth year, Ayala’s Leadership Acceleration Program (LEAP) continues to challenge Ayala group officers to explore ways to drive strategy and execution, customer centricity, innovation and growth, and transformational leadership. At the end of each program, participants present concrete project ideas to JAZA, FZA, and the Ayala group management committee. One such project is being realized through the synergy between BPI Family Savings Bank (BPI-FSB) and Ayala Land. The inspiration: Ayala’s strategy to address the needs of the bottom-of-the-pyramid market. The idea: Provide an opportunity for Ayala group employees earning P15,000 to P25,000 a month to own their first home. “I’m glad that we’re doing this because we can learn from you; you can tell us what is out there. Thank you in the Ayala group for resonating with us on this goal of national development.” Fostering innovation at Ayala The team from Cohort 4 discuss their project “Our interest is to have an Ayala that remains dynamic, that adds value and continues to grow with the times, and remains relevant,” explains Paolo Borromeo of Ayala’s new innovation imperative. The innovation team at the parent company seeks to identify disruptive or game-changing products, services, and business models, and find local, scalable applications. When gaps and discontinuities are found in sectors where Ayala is involved or affected, it aims to respond with an innovation business model or inventive application of technology. The project was developed by a team from Cohort 4, namely, LiveIt CFO Beng Agbayani, BPI-FSB VP Herbert Tuason, MDC Construction Operations Head Mario Monsalve, Integrated Micro-Electronics Inc Business Development Manager Eric Javate, and Ayala Foundation Senior Manager Suzanne Yupangco. To achieve this, the team consults with an internal advisory council that includes officers from ALI, BPI, Globe and Kickstart, Manila Water, and IMI. It also aims to builds synergy through partnerships. Aside from Ateneo, Ayala is working with the University of the Philippines, De La Salle University’s Animo Labs, and companies such as Tallwood Venture Capital, Bluflame Technology, Innosight, Google, McCann Worldgroup, Mastercard, GE, and the design research collective Curiosity. The group estimated that more than 6,000 employees stand to benefit from this initiative. They worked closely with BPI-FSB and BellaVita, ALI’s recent foray into the social housing market, and studied other housing loans. They developed a loan program for qualified employees that would require an initial cash out of P 35,000—the cost of a smartphone—for a 60-sqm house and lot in BellaVita General Trias, Cavite. By fostering a collaborative and engaging environment involving academe, industry, and communities, Ayala hopes to bring about the kind of innovation that creates value for all. This initiative will be introduced in the upcoming Ayala Group HR Summit. 9 Vol 17 • No 4 • 2013 Globe moves to BGC From page 1 and construction of the building took into account its impact on the location and the surrounding environment. The rating system has further driven the company to incorporate construction routines, such as maintaining proper waste disposal and exterior area protection, which do not contribute to environmental degradation. In the long run, this will also generate minimal impact on the environment, Cu said. Following energy efficiency standards, the building makes use of LED lights, which will make the facilities 20% more energy efficient. The building will also reduce water consumption and increase water efficiency to around 30% through a grey water collecting system. Furthermore, the new Globe building envisions a clutter-free, paperless environment. In line with this, employees will be working through an online platform that will define “green office transactions.” BPI offered its 162 successful years in a thanksgiving Mass celebrated by His Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, Archbishop of Manila. anniversaries in August Three Ayala subsidiaries celebrated their anniversary month of August with activities that emphasized core values among employees, giving back to communities, and sustainability. 10 Blessed Cardinal Tagle: “May BPI have the presence of God who cares, a God for covenant, who calls His people as His own. These mobile devices will replace analog audio players, and will provide more detailed narrations (in both English and Filipino) of historical events and facts relating to each diorama. This partnership makes Ayala Museum the first museum in the country to integrate the gadget for educational purposes. It also brings the endearing dioramas into the digital age, providing a more engaging way of studying Philippine history. The next best alternative to towering cell sites, ODAS makes use of a specialized lamp post built with radio 14 signal transmission capability, bringing unparalleled telecoms service for its subscribers in strategic areas. According to Emmanuel Estrada, Globe head of Network Technologies Strategy, the ODAS solution also supports all frequency bands used by wireless carriers, including the cutting-edge long-term Vol 17 • No 4 • 2013 evolution (LTE) technology. ODAS uses fiber-optic cables to distribute a base station’s signals to multiple low-power active antenna systems installed in nominal locations inside residential subdivisions. “The ODAS solution does not only improve mobile phone signals, it also provides an alternative and efficient lighting system,” Estrada says. Fund raising for capex, refinancing BPI FSB goes ‘plastic’ In July, Ayala Land and Globe Telecom listed bonds on the Philippine Dealing and Exchange Corporation to be used in part for their respective capital expenditure programs. In response to the demand for a low-rate, no-frills alternative to cash, BPI Family Savings Bank unveiled its first credit card— the BPI Family Credit Card. The card continues BPI FSB’s tradition of offering accessible products, and comes with a 2% finance charge, the lowest in the Philippines. Globe’s notes, comprising of P4-billion seven-year bonds due 2020 and P3-billion 10-year bonds due 2023, were listed on July 17 and given a rating of PRS Aaa by the Philippine Rating Services Corp. On July 30, ALI issued and listed P15-billion bonds due 2024, its largest debt issue for a single tenor to date. Globe also signed a three-year $40-million term loan facility with Mizuho Bank Ltd to prepay and refinance certain debts, said Globe CFO Alberto de Larrazabal. “The loan will help us generate savings,” he said, noting the favorable environment in the debt market. On July 31, Manila Water Company signed a $100-million loan with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to help expand its water and wastewater treatment facilities in its 1,400-square kilometer East Zone concession covering 23 cities and towns in and around Metro Manila. Because of the low interest rate, cardholders get extra help in paying for everyday expenses without having to wait for payday. It is also for people intimidated by the high interest rates usually charged by other credit cards. “These new projects that IFC is helping fund is aligned with our priority to promote inclusive growth. As a strategic partner of Manila Water for the past 10 years, we have seen it double the number of people who have access to clean, affordable water at their homes,” said IFC Resident Representative Jesse Ang. The loan builds on IFC’s previous investments in Manila Water, comprising a $30-million loan in 2002 and a $30-million loan and $15-million equity in 2004. Moreover, since the BPI Family Credit Card is licensed by leading global payments company MasterCard, cardholders can use it in over 34 million affiliated merchants globally, assuring a safe, reliable, and widely accessible payment solution. Manila Water recently joined the DENR-NCR and the La Mesa Watershed Multi-Sectoral Management Council (LMWMMC) in celebrating Philippine Arbor Day, as the group planted 1,700 seedlings of native forest trees such as Batino, Bitaog, Supa and Banaba within a 4-hectare portion of the watershed. So far, Globe has utilized the aesthetic tree solution to enhance connectivity in Urdaneta Village in Makati. Says Emmanuel Estrada: “The disguised cell phone towers will be difficult to identify as such, and they even work to beautify the area where these infrastructures are installed.” Estrada also stressed that radiation coming from cell sites is not considered harmful and is classified as non-ionizing, similar to radiation coming from low-frequency devices such as transistor radios, microwave ovens, or baby monitors. In fact, all cell sites and ODAS equipment of the company have also been given radiation safety certificates by the DOH. Ultimately, the challenge is for everyone to come together in taking that first step toward making their vision of a better future come true. This challenge has prompted Ayala Foundation to develop its official tagline “As One We Can.” In August, AFI’s “Pilipinas: As One We Can” cinema advertisement premiered at Ayala Cinemas, encouraging Filipinos from all walks of life to come together in building the nation’s future. The 45-second ad featured special artworks created by some of the most promising young artists in the country. Each artwork displays various techniques, colors, and styles, reflecting each artist’s unique sensibility and approach to art. However, when the paintings are put together, the word, “Pilipinas” appears—a symbol of how Filipinos can harness their respective strengths and harmonize the elements to form a bigger, more compelling picture celebrating both unity and diversity. The ad features the works of Vincent Aseo, Anjo Bolarda, Rob Cham, Paulo Correa, Rai Cruz, Dan Fajardo, Clarina Gonzales, Soleil Ignacio, Wiji Lacsamana, Tokwa Peñaflorida, Vincent Trinidad, Nelz Yumul, and Chalk Zaldivar. Also featured are works of AFI-affiliated artists: Gladys Documento, Yani Alonto, Jet de la Rosa (alumni of the Ayala Young Leaders Congress); Lowell Moncal, Katreena Villanueva, Rishanne Dizon (graduates of the Center of Excellence in Public Elementary Education); and Nikko Pascua (former AFI intern). To support the ad, AFI displayed “As One We Can” posters in parts of the Makati Central Business District (such as the walkways, Glorietta, and Greenbelt). These posters asked passersby to think of their vision of a better future. At the same time they introduced the foundation’s four program pillars—Education, Youth Leadership, Sustainable Livelihood, and Arts and Culture. AFI also refreshed its official website to reflect the tagline. The bold new site makes a stronger call for the public to support the foundation in three simple ways—donate, partner, or volunteer. AFI crowd-funds for 4 CENTEX students Ayala Foundation successfully raised $2,415, which will fund the education of four students from the Center of Excellence in Public Elementary Education (CENTEX). Using the web-based fund-raising strategy “crowdfunding,” AFI partnered with SocialProject.ph to raise as much as $6,000, enough to fund 10 students, over a period of two months. The CENTEX project was one of SocialProject.ph’s six inaugural causes. The crowdfunding effort was supported by 30 individuals over its two-month run. For this show of support, CENTEX became the only cause to reach two milestones during the campaign. AFI reached 40% of its target amount. 18 SocialProject.ph is a crowd-funding platform that connects inspiring initiatives for communities in the Philippines to supporters around the world who want to increase the impact of social good projects. The website advocates “responsible giving,” promoting sustainability, empowerment, and creativity. Specially commissioned outdoor art installations by internationally acclaimed Filipino artists were placed around NUVALI’s lakeside commercial district. Featured were the works of scrap metal artist Mario Mallari Jr. who created “The Last Tree”; Juan Carlo Calma, an architect who took up sculpture, painting, and light design in California, and created “Flower Primitive” resembling a cluster of gigantic red blooms; Michael Cacnio, a 1996 Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Awardee, who used welded brass for his design named “Luksong Lubid”; and renowned sculptor Eduardo Castrillo whose art piece called “Community of Creation” depicts the dynamics of creative minds coming together and working as one. Other events also held from August to September were the Green Art Display which featured art installations that make use of non-traditional, earthfriendly, and/or recyclable materials; “Ecograffiti” or ecofriendly street art; and arts and crafts workshops for kids.
