About Blas
Blas na hEireann, The Irish Food Awards is the biggest competition for
quality Irish produce on the island of Ireland. This year over 2,500 Irish
products were entered into the competition to win Gold, Silver and
Bronze Awards in over 100 food and drink categories as well as key Finding the very best
awards such as Supreme Champion and Best Artisan Producer.
Developed with UCC and the University of Copenhagen our judging
process is now recognised as an industry ‘gold’ standard worldwide.

process so that Blas na hEireann can create the a level

Minister Simon Coveney
This year Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine,
Simon Coveney TD was presented with the prestigious Blas
Na hEireann Producers Champion Award 2015. This award
follows a survey conducted by Blas na hEireann, of over
2,000 Irish food and drink producers asking them who in
their opinion had done the most to promote Irish produce at
home and abroad in the past year. Over 60% of respondents
cited Minister Coveney. The Minister joins Blas Producers’
Champion team, alongside Neven Maguire, who was awarded
this accolade in 2014.

“The ‘Sense-Award’, which has been the judging system used for the Blas na hEireann, The Irish Food Awards for the past eight years, is a noncomplex categorised scoring system which has proven to be a statistically valid method of judge scoring in terms of description, discrimination and
ranking of product quality, as well as being user-friendly, fair, impartial, consumer relevant and transparent. The method was easily applied and
effective in allowing judges to objectively assess all products using a single scale type questionnaire. The application of the ‘Sense-Award’ method at
The Irish Food Awards has demonstrated that the appropriate application of sensory analysis can be highly successful in the objective discrimination
