Hikes
For complete hike information, turn to the Discovering Southern Arizona section on page 23.
Hike of the Month
Join us for a series of hikes in the Tucson area. We'll hike a different trail on the second Saturday of each month. Hikes
are led by experienced and knowledgeable hiking guides. Hikes range in distance from 4.5 to 12 miles with elevation
changes from 300 to 2,100 feet. Hikers meet at or near the trailhead. For more information, turn to the Discovering
Southern Arizona section of the noncredit schedule.
Thursday Hikes
If you are accustomed to hiking and would like to explore a variety
of terrain with an experienced guide, join us on one or more of the
following hiking trails: Gardner Canyon, Estes Canyon, Bear
Canyon, Golden Gate, Radio Ridge, Aravaipa Canyon, Wild Burro
Canyon, Cougar Canyon, Mid Tank Loop, and Cotzen Pass Loop.
Sky Island Waterfall Hikes
Take a hike with us to the waterfalls in the Rincon and Santa Catalina
Mountains. We try to schedule the hikes during the time of the year
when water should be flowing down from the high country. Hikers will meet at the trailhead for a fun day of hiking and
exploration. Hikes range in distance from 3 to 12 miles with elevation changes from 500 to 2,500 feet.
Specialty Hikes
Hikers meet at a Pima Community College campus and travel to the trailhead in a College van.

because they allow you to hike to areas in the wilderness that you wouldn’t normally get to if you had to hike back
out on the same trail. Under normal circumstances, 10 to 12 hikers are required in order to offset the College’s cost
for two vans and two hike leaders.
Geocaching Hikes
Geocaching is an entertaining treasure hunt game for adults. A Global Positioning System (GPS) is required to locate geocaches. Individuals and organizations have set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches via
the Internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the
visitor with a wide variety of rewards. Taking a reward from the cache? Leave something in the cache, record an entry in
the geocache log book and post your find on the Internet. Pima Community College Geocache Hikers will search for
caches that are hidden near hiking trails in the mountains surrounding Tucson. Participants do not need to have their own
GPS to enjoy the treasure hunt. The geocache hike leader will have at least two GPS units on hand each hike. The participants will take turns using the GPS units to locate a geocache. We will try to schedule geocache hikes that have at least
two caches hidden along the route. For participants with their own GPS, the hike leader will email the geocache coordinates
prior to the hike. For those who have never used a GPS, these hikes will familiarize you with it and give you an idea of its
capabilities.
Cost of Hikes
In order to reduce costs, hikers meet at or near the trailhead whenever feasible. For the Key Swap Hikes and Specialty
Hikes that require a long drive to the trailhead, hikers meet at a College campus and are transported to the trailhead in a
College van. (eg. Aravaipa Canyon and Chiricahua Mountains).
Hikes of the Month
$29 per hike (see note)
Geocache Hikes
$39 per hike
Key Swap Hikes (College provides transportation)
$89 per hike
Specialty Hikes (College provides transportation)
$89 per hike
Sky Island Waterfall Hikes
$39 per hike
Note: If you register for three Hikes of the Month at the same time, the cost is a flat fee of $75.
Natural History Walking Tours
Learn more about the sites in and around Tucson through walking tours. Discover Marana, Ironwood Forest, the Tortolita
Mountains and the Sonoran Desert. Walking tours are a wonderful activity for those who want to learn as they walk. During
these adventures, biology, history, and the vegetation and animal life in the area will be discussed. For more information,
turn to page 28.
Mountain Biking
Pima County has miles of outstanding single-track trails for recreational bike riding. Ride along with our mountain biking trail guides
on one or more of the following trails: Sweetwater Preserve Trail, Starr
Pass Trail, Robles Pass Trail, Ironwood Trail and Brown Mountain
Trail. For more information, turn to page 24.
In keeping with our commitment to offer up-to-date and interesting activities, we welcome your input
in suggesting areas for our next hike, walking tour, mountain bike trail, J.A.U.N.T., or trail ride.
