RaeLynn’s ‘Voice’ Encore Helps
‘Girls’ Surge; Bryan Sees Top 10
Second-season The Voice (NBC) contestant RaeLynn returned to
the show on Dec. 2 and performed her current single, “God Made
Girls” (Valory). The visit proved valuable, as “Girls” flies 17-7 on
Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, adding Digital Gainer applause, as the track
vaults 12-1 on Country Digital Songs
(34,000 downloads sold, up 116 percent, according to Nielsen Music). The
track has sold 250,000 total downloads
through the week ending Dec. 7. The
Texas native (real name Racheal Lynn
Woodward) scored her first Billboard
top 10 when “Boyfriend” debuted and
peaked at No. 10 on Country Digital Songs
after she performed the song on the thirdseason Voice semi-finals in December
2012. Streaming also spikes for “Girls,”
which reaches a new peak on Country
Digital Songs (20-13) with 834,000 U.S. streams, a 19 percent
gain. The song bullets at No. 21 in its 23rd week on the Billboard
Country Airplay tally (viewable on Billboard.com/biz), where it
peaked at No. 20 on Nov. 15.
Speaking of The Voice, current contender Craig Wayne Boyd
debuts for the second time in as many weeks on Hot Country
Songs and Country Digital Songs, as “Take It Easy” (Republic)
starts at No. 31 on the former list and at No. 5 on the latter (20,000
downloads). Boyd’s cover of the Eagles’ 1972 debut hit (it reached
No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100) is the song’s third Hot Country
Songs appearance. West Coast country
star Billy Mize’s version peaked at No.
66 in 1972 (when the chart ran 75 positions deep) and Travis Tritt’s take for
the Common Thread: Songs of the Eagles
tribute album peaked at No. 21 in 1994.
(The latter’s video includes the band,
and helped spur the Eagles’ reunion as a
touring and recording act that year after
a 14-year break.)
Luke Bryan claims his 17th top 10
on Hot Country Songs with “I See You”
(Capitol Nashville). It nabs the top Airplay Gainer trophy and soars 19-10. On
Country Airplay, “See” surges 16-13 (24
million audience impressions, up 19 percent. It additionally blasts
17-7 on Country Digital Songs (20,000, up 38 percent).
HOUSEKEEPING: Billboard’s annual Year in Music print issue
goes on sale Dec. 12, but all year-end charts are now viewable at
Billboard.com/biz, including all the country, Christian, gospel
and bluegrass lists that Billboard’s charts department produces.

MAKIN’ TR ACKS TOM ROLAND tom.roland@billboard.com
Glen Campbell’s ‘I’m Not Gonna
Miss You’ Is A Powerful Goodbye
“I have cried, and I have laughed. Laughing is a hell of a lot better.”
Glen Campbell’s life assessment, captured during the documentary Glen
Campbell … I’ll Be Me, is perhaps the best clue about the mind-set behind “I’m
Not Gonna Miss You,” a key track in the movie that’s garnering well-deserved
attention. It picked up two Grammy nominations on Dec. 5, for best country
song and best song written for visual media. And even before “I’m Not Gonna
Miss You” was released as a single, Cumulus’
Nash Icon stations began playing it, though its
topic — the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease —
isn’t an obvious one for morning drive.
Part of the reason it works is likely the way
it was written. Alzheimer’s is one of the most
feared aspects of aging, but “I’m Not Gonna
Miss You” is built from Campbell’s viewpoint.
As devastating as it is for a family to have a
once-vibrant loved one not even remember
your name, his shaky memory is — in Campbell’s case — a source for one-liners.
“I been trying to get rid of it for the last 40
years,” quips Campbell in the movie.
And that wasn’t just an attitude he spouted
for director James Keach’s cameras.
“He always joked about, ‘Well, it doesn’t
matter. I’m not going to miss anybody anyway,’ ” notes Big Machine Label Group vp A&R
Julian Raymond, who produced and co-wrote the song. “That’s what’s kind
of strange about it. Certainly it’s sad — I get it — but it was almost more of
Glen’s sort of strange sense of humor and the funny guy that he’s always been.”
“I’m Not Gonna Miss You” was written as a tentative assignment, part of
a lengthy process as Raymond accompanied Campbell on his farewell tour.
Raymond had produced 2011’s Ghost on the Canvas, billed as the last studio
album in Campbell’s Country Music Hall of Fame career. They co-wrote five
songs for that project, and Raymond was best-equipped to co-write another
song that would help Campbell tell his own story in the picture.
The plan was to have Campbell record it with some of his former associates
from The Wrecking Crew, a loosely defined group of Los Angeles studio musicians who played on many of the pop hits of the 1960s, including music by
The Beach Boys, The Righteous Brothers and The Mamas & The Papas.
“There was a bit of talk for a time of it just being too sad to end the film that
way,” says Raymond, “but I think they all got around that fact and then thought
it was a fitting ending to the movie.”
As Raymond spent time with Campbell during that last tour, he kept a running journal of Campbell’s observations, capturing his most lucid thoughts
about living with the knowledge that your mind is slipping away.
“I don’t know how you write about that other than living with someone going
through it,” says Raymond.
Campbell provided enough material in the process that they had three different songs in development. Ultimately, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” won out,
using a scant 18 lines to portray a man aware that his sense of reality is fading.
He will at some point no longer recognize his own children, and his wife, Kimberly, will likely become a stranger to him. And at that stage, he’ll be unaware
of how much turmoil his condition has caused those around him.
“One thing selfishly remains,” he concludes, “I’m not gonna miss you.”
Getting those 18 lines recorded was time-consuming. As the tour progressed,
Campbell’s cognizance was increasingly challenged. He couldn’t find the bathroom in his own house. He was frustrated and angry during parts of his final
show — Nov. 30, 2012, in Napa, Calif. — when he had trouble getting through
songs even with a teleprompter.
“I had to leave,” admits Raymond. “I couldn’t watch it. It was hard, because
he was struggling.”
It would get worse. Once Campbell came off
the road and had no routine, his mental failures
accelerated. It was in that period that Campbell joined a few of his Wrecking Crew mates
— drummer Hal Blaine, bass player Joe Osborn and piano player Don Randi — at EastWest
Studios, a Sunset Boulevard recording location
where the Crew played with the likes of Frank
Sinatra, Dean Martin and The Monkees when
it was known as Western Recorders.
The film rolled as they captured Campbell’s
final session. When there were glitches, Raymond
or an engineer would shift the blame to themselves to make it as an enjoyable experience for
Campbell as possible.
“We should all be that lucky to get together with
everybody we made history with one last time,”
says Raymond.
Once the tracking session was completed, Nashville session player Dan Dugmore overdubbed a steel guitar, and Campbell had to come into the studio for
the final vocal, which proved to be the most challenging part of the process.
“That song is barely three minutes long, and it took hours to get through the
vocals,” notes Raymond. “One or two words here and there, we’d get it. I’d sit
there next to him, right next to the mic; I would sing it to him and he would sing
it back to me. We’d roll the song, and then as soon as the music came on, it would
pop right out of his head again and he’d forget it.”
When Campbell’s primary vocals were completed, he stuck around to watch
Raymond add the backing vocals. He sang four different parts, then stacked each
one three times to create an ethereal, spiritual layer to the recording.
“He loved those parts, too,” says Raymond. “He thought it was very Beach
Boys-, Beatles-like, which he loved.”
Despite the heavy subject matter, Big Machine Label Group president/CEO
Scott Borchetta decided “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” should be a single. Raymond hired some Nashville players to punch up the radio version, which was
released to broadcasters via Play MPE on Nov. 24.
Much the way “Hurt” artfully captured the turmoil in Johnny Cash’s final
years, Campbell’s last recording is an honest farewell. As “I’m Not Gonna Miss
You” gets awards recognition, his awareness of it is likely fleeting at best. He
frequently gets out and about with his family, but he’s now living in a Middle
Tennessee memory-care center that he considers his home.
“He’s mellow, and he’s content, and he’s well-adapted and cared for,” says
Raymond. “He’s happy. He just doesn’t know anyone.”
As the song would suggest, that scenario sounds sad to the rest of us who
remember the Glen Campbell that spent four decades as a bona-fide star. For
Campbell, it simply fulfills the punch line. He’s really not gonna miss you.

THE STARK REPORT PHYLLIS STARK phyllis.stark@billboard.com
CMA CEO Sarah Trahern Reflects
On Her First Year On The Job
It has been nearly a year since veteran TV executive Sarah Trahern took over
the role of CEO at the Country Music Assn., joining the trade group from GAC,
where she had served as senior vp/GM. She’s well-qualified for the job, coming into the CMA role with 27 years of experience in the network TV business,
including 18 years producing and/or overseeing country music programming.
But she admits that when it comes to the sheer magnitude of philanthropic
and educational projects the CMA is involved in, the first year has been like
“drinking from a fire hose.” Those activities are
TRAHERN
in addition to CMA’s high-profile events, which
include the massive summer CMA Music Festival and its companion TV special, The CMA
Awards, and an annual network TV Christmas
special. (All three air on ABC.)
According to Trahern, the year’s accomplishments include striking a deal with PBS
to televise the CMA’s decade-old Songwriters Series as part of the public broadcaster’s
Front and Center series, taking the CMA radio
remotes in-house after a longtime deal with
Premiere Networks, expanding the CMA EDU
educational program to more college campuses and continuing to fund public-school
music programs through the CMA Foundation and its Keep the Music Playing project.
Trahern spoke with Billboard Midweek Country Update about her first year on the job.
Was your first year all you hoped that it
would be?
Yes, and frankly, even better … One thing I can
honestly say about this job is that there’s not
been a dull moment, but I love that. It’s been a great year.
What were some of the things about the job that surprised you?
Just the sheer volume of things. Having come from a television world where
things change every day … you get ratings on every 15-minute increment …
so you think nothing is as constant as that. The CMA is that constant, but in
a good way. I’m amazed by how much our small staff of roughly 45 pulls off.
I am continually blown away by how many things the CMA touches. From
the outside a lot of people see Music Fest and the awards show as the two big
tent-pole events that we have, but we have something like 25 additional events
honoring songwriters with the Songwriters Series or the Triple Play Awards
in January or our Keep the Music Playing concert with the foundation, the
Hall of Fame inductions, what we’ve done to grow our CMA EDU chapters.
There’s just so many different touch points.
What skills of yours were immediately applicable to this job, and
which ones do you feel like you have been developing for the last year?
I’ve been in organizations that have changed a lot over time ... The ability to
lead change was important after there had been so much change at the CMA
over the last few years. Rather than coming in with a quick agenda where I
needed to accomplish these things in my first 90 days or my first six months,
part of it was taking a breath to realize the things I didn’t know, and to really
learn from the people around me, whether that was the board leadership or
the staff, and [figuring out] how I can help lead the change and [bring the]
stability to the organization that we need it to be long term.
The CMA board is huge: It has 75 people. How does it function?
There are 100 people in the Senate, and getting three quarters of them to agree
on something is quite an achievement these days, and that’s what we have
to do at the CMA. But it’s not insurmountable,
because everybody comes in wanting country
music to win. We may have different ways of
going about it, and I would almost always rather
have contention in the room and open discussion than a bunch of back-room stuff. I feel like
we have a format … where people can raise their
concerns and have an open and respectful dialogue for the betterment of the business. As
the business changes, that’s going to be more
important than ever.
How did your relationship with ABC evolve
this year?
We put our team and the ABC team in the
same room looking at country not just for those
three shows [that we produce together], but
what we [should] do to raise the profile of country and the CMA as the country music brand
on a year-round basis. We’ve just started to tap
the surface of how deep we can go with that.
We worked directly with the Robin Roberts
team this year to do a different type of special,
where she did the 15 songs that influenced country music. We worked directly with the Jimmy Kimmel folks on some different things like the hologram telecast they did awards-show night. What I
think we can expect over the next couple of years is just to grow the depth of
our relationship with ABC.
What was one of the year’s highlights?
I had this thing happen that was such a defining moment. For Music Fest, I carried in my purse a series of letters from the kids from both the Keep the Music
Playing program and the Disney in the Schools project we support with the
foundation, because whenever I went to talk to a group [prior to Music Fest]
— like the camera guys or the police officers — about why we do what we do, I
felt it was important for people to realize that the musicians are donating their
time to Music Fest so we can turn these proceeds over for the music program.
My first night at the Hilton somebody from the hotel sent me a bottle of
wine and some fruit. The guy who brought it set it on the desk and asked
me, “What do you know about this Disney in the Schools project?” I realized
the letters with pictures of the kids were on my desk. I explained to him that
I was with the CMA and we help support that program. And he said, “My
son played Simba in the eighth grade and sang, and it’s just changed his life
because it gave him more confidence. He’s always been really shy, and now
he’s coming into his own.” For me, it was the perfect kickoff to Music Fest
to remind me why we do what we do.

Lance Houston
PD, WBWL Boston
When Lance Houston arrived in Boston in the fall to program the
new iHeartRadio station WBWL, it completed a whirlwind run from
WUBL Atlanta to WPOC Baltimore, where he stayed a mere 18
months. The Bull isn’t the only country station in Beantown: WKLB
helped transform the market for country in its more than two decades
in the city. The new PD is also not the only Lance Houston in the
community: Another is a jazz flute player on the faculty at the Berklee College of Music. Country’s Lance Houston can relate — during
high school, he was a sax player and drum major, the perfect role for
a football fan.
Why did you want this job? Is it because it’s a larger market?
Great radio is great radio, whether it’s in a small, medium or a large
market. I was really proud of what we accomplished in Baltimore.
My team there is just fantastic. But it was the challenge of doing what
we did in Atlanta again. There’s just something appealing about that
challenge and waking up every day and trying to figure out what we
can do to make this a better radio station to bring a little different light
on country music to appeal to the young country music fans in Boston.
Really, it didn’t have anything to do with market size. It was just about
a fantastic opportunity to build something new here.
It sounds as though you kind of like being the underdog. Yeah,
it’s fun. You get a chance to do a lot of things that you don’t normally
get to do when you’re the leader. We’re doing some great things —
we’ve got five two-hour commercial-free Bull rides every day. That’s
a lot of commercial-free music, and so there are things that you can’t
do when you’re at a heritage station and you get all that commercial
stuff going. There’s a plan and a process for building it out, and that
I heard Sam Hunt’s “House Party” this
morning. It’s not a single. How does that
fit into the philosophy you’re employing? We’re just trying to have fun on the
radio. and we’re trying to appeal to Boston’s
younger demographics. There was a big article that came out that Boston is America’s
youngest biggest city. People aged 20 to 34
make up a third of Boston’s population, and it’s even higher in Cambridge — it’s
44 percent there. So, we’re just trying to have fun. If it’s connecting with the
younger audience with an artist like Sam Hunt and a great song like “House
Party,” and it sounds really good on the radio, we’re going to do it. We’re about
finding those opportunities where we can be different from the heritage radio
station we’re going up against and trying to find the ways that we can connect.
When you spend as long as you did in Atlanta, and then you cruise through
Ravens territory and now you’re in New England, how does that work in
terms of your football allegiances? My allegiances really are college foot-
ball, so for pro, I can adapt. I’ll tell you what I didn’t expect was in Baltimore:
I really fell in love with the Orioles, and I really got interested in baseball a lot
more than I ever thought I would be. I was always kind of a Braves fan. I mean,
living in the South, it was always on TV with TBS and all that, but the Orioles
is a really special ball club, as the Red Sox are here. Those people in Baltimore
love their Orioles and would wear those orange shirts around town whether
they’ve got a .300 record or a .600 record. I think the Red Sox have quite a history going worst to first and then back to worst again, so maybe after winning
the World Series and then literally being the worst team in baseball last year,
maybe they’ll win the World Series next year.
Other than maybe the fact that Boston is so young, what has surprised
you? I think the mass transportation and the subway system. Boston was
America’s first subway. The green line that they still run was the very first subway in the country, and I think that’s cool. It’s something that living in Atlanta
you just didn’t get to do very much, because the infrastructure’s not there. I had
no idea that Boston was America’s first subway. But I love history and this place
is just full of great U.S. history, and I’ve just started to really explore. We’re having a good time so far. —Tom Roland
