The Shoemakers‘ Walk Hauenstein starts at the Felsdurchbruch
(Cutting) opposite the Penny Markt Car Park, the walk is approx.
15 km (9.5 miles) and takes you around the neighbouring hills with
a route chosen to show many of the scenic views, rock formations
and quiet forest glades surrounding Hauenstein. The route begins
on the Bahnhofstrasse, going up the small stone steps to the
Adolph-Kolping-Weg then a slight zigzag climb through the „Felsenklamm“, along the „Mischberg“ and on to the „Nedingfelsen“.
Travel along the top of the hill turning left towards the Cross at the
summit, (viewpoint), walk further bearing to the right, then follow
the zigzag path down to the Landauer Strasse. On crossing the
road; walk over the meadow to the „Karmelkloster“ (vantage point
from the „St. Katharina Kapelle“ nearby). The path leads from the
Cloister turning left through a Hollow where it starts climbing to the
right across the field, through the new housing complex to join the
Weissenburger Strasse and eventually „Ankers Kreuz“. From here
it slowly climbs to the „Kreuzfelsen“. Enjoy the view from the top
before walking back a few metres to the rock wall, turning right to
go up through the gap in the rocks to the small plateau, turn right
again towards the „Dörreinfelsen“ before arriving on the „Höhenweg“ (a visit to the „Backelstein“ is worthwhile), pass by the
Shooting Hut at „Weimersborn“ until the „Hühnerstein“ is reached
with its panoramic views. The rock face can be climbed be means
of a ladder. The path continues to go down through the high valley
bearing to the left before arriving at the Mapped Signpost, here
turn right walking down to the Ramblers House „Dicke Eiche“ (run
by the „Pfälzerwaldverein“, open at Weekends and Bank Holidays).
The path leads to the 300 year old „Dicke Eiche“ tree trunk, past
the „Winterkirchel“ and the „Jungwald“ (Shooting Hut with a view
of „Burg Trifels“), carry on to the next Shooting Hut „Vier Buchen“.
Here the path bears right towards the „Hängeler Brünnel“ and
bends right again after 200 m passing the „Hängeler Pfad“ towards
the reservoir. Now begin to descend along the Panorama Way back
to the start at the Penny Markt. The Hauenstein Shoemakers‘ Walk
offers a variety of starting off points allowing a shorter version of
this ramble.
Shoemakers‘ Walk, Hauenstein
An experience for reflection Map of the area:
Luftkurort
The name „Shoemakers‘ Walk“ was intended to reflect the 125 years of
Shoe production in and around Hauenstein, in what once was Germanys‘
largest shoe village and to create the connection with the intensive shoe
production of today.werden.
At whichever starting point you decide to take, you‘ll wander across
hilltops and down into small steep valleys surrounded by Beech, Fir and
gnarled Oak trees. The dominant red sandstone rock outcrops giving
you panoramic views showing the beauty of this UNESCO Biosphere
Reserve here in the Palatinate, Germanys‘ largest coherent forest.
The foothills of the Vosges (Wasgau in German), are filled with delightful walking paths of various grades, clearly sign-posted to make your
chosen route stress-free and without the need for a map. The 15 km
Shoemakers Walk allows you to safely climb up to the „Nedingfelsen“
and „Kreuzfelsen“ to experience the breathtaking scenery of „Palatinate Switzerland“ as this area was once termed in a special report by
the Rheinpfalz Newspaper.
Whilst underway, there are many places to stop for a bite to eat, sample
some of the culinary specialities of the Palatinate or perhaps just drink a
glass of our classic wines. Quiet locations to put down the rucksack and
just enjoy the Palatinate at its best.
When attempting the entire length of the Shoemakers Walk you should
allow up to 4 hours letting your soul absorb the beauty of the region,
leaving behind the stress and challenges of everyday life.
