Facts and figures
US citizens in Munich
• People from more than 180 countries live in Munich. Foreign residents account for around 25 percent of the Bavarian capital's total population – more
than in any other German city.
• In 2013, some 6,300 US citizens lived in Munich. All in all, around 23,400 US
citizens have made their home in the Free State of Bavaria.
• Munich has been twinned with the city of Cincinnati in the state of Ohio since
1989. The Free State of Bavaria has had an official partnership with the state
of Georgia since 2007. Bavaria has also maintained its own representations
in New York since 1996 and in San Francisco since 1999. In addition, four
federal states of the USA are represented in Munich.
• Over the years, a sizable international business community has taken shape
in Munich. Their knowledge and experience enrich the city, contributing to its
unique flair as a cosmopolitan place to live and work.

Tourism
For American tourists, Munich is one of the most popular destinations in Germany.
• In 2013, Munich's hostels, hotels and guesthouses welcomed 324.500 visitors from the USA. This figure puts the USA top of the table of the city's most
important foreign markets.
• American guests clearly enjoy staying in the Bavarian capital. The number of
overnight stays came up to 711.120 in 2013 (+1.4% compared to 2012).
• A total of 6.3 million guests visited Munich and registered 12.89 million
overnight stays in 2013 (+2.8% and +4.3% compared to 2012).
Business in Munich
No other German local authority has the headquarters of so many large corporations within its jurisdiction. Munich is home to global players such as six of the top
blue-chip companies listed in the DAX 30 index (Allianz, BMW, Infineon, Linde,
Munich Re and Siemens), but also to a broad spectrum of small and medium-sized
enterprises, many of which are hidden champions in their chosen industries. In
total, some 91,500 companies do business in the Bavarian capital.
A foreign trade volume in excess of EUR 28 billion (2012) makes the USA Bavaria's second most important foreign trade partner. In 2012, Bavarian exports to
the USA rose 19 percent to more than EUR 18 billion, maintaining the country's
position as Bavaria's most important export market. Conversely, imports of American products to Bavaria were up by around 1,9 percent in 2012. Total imports of
EUR 9.94 billion made the USA Bavaria's fourth-largest import partner.
US companies in Munich
About 600 US corporations have set up branches and offices in and around Munich. They appreciate Munich's location in the heart of Europe as a valuable gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. An excellent infrastructure, a rich and highly
qualified labor pool and close proximity to both customers and cooperation partners in the business and scientific communities provide further compelling arguments for the Bavarian capital. Employees from abroad quickly become integrated
here, taking advantage of an attractive array of international schools, nurseries,
cultural facilities and networks.

Munich companies' US activities
Munich-based global players such as BMW and Siemens have been manufacturing very successfully in the USA for decades. BMW, the biggest exporter of
vehicles produced in the USA, has become a symbol of Bavarian-American cooperation. Yet the people of Bavaria too are attracted to life “across the pond”:
Over the past ten years, aproximately 90,000 Bavarians have moved to the United
States.

Universities and establishments of higher education
A total of 14 universities/universities of applied sciences and academies make Munich the second-largest venue for establishments of higher education in Germany.

some 250 came from the USA.
A broad spectrum of cooperative ventures with US universities and research organizations is the visible expression of the excellent international relationships
maintained by Munich's universities. The activities covered range from collaborative research to the promotion of undergraduate studies and international student
