design#was#needed.#Landscape#architects,#architects#and#urban#planners#became#involved.##
Since#the#19th#century,#many#local#societies#have#emerged#in#Germany,#partly#in#order#to#create#and#
enhance#the#beauty#of#cities.#One#example#is#the#German#Society#for#Garden#Design#and#Cultural#
Landscapes#(DGGL),#founded#in#1887.#A#magazine#(Garten'+'Landschaft)#was#launched#in#1889.#Some#
years#later#(1913),#the#Federation#of#German#Landscape#Architects#(bdla)#sprang#off#this#society.#It#
was#more#strongly#geared#towards#professionals.#From#the#late#19th#century#up#to#1920,#most#
municipalities#formed#green#planning#agencies.#To#become#a#regular#member#of#bdla,#one#has#to#
have#a#formal#degree#in#landscape#architecture#and#must#be#listed#in#a#Chamber#of#Architects.#
Professionals#working#in#the#field#of#landscape#architecture#without#a#formal#degree#in#LA#can#
become#associate#bdla#members.#Students#may#obtain#the#status#of#guest#members.#
Since#the#1970s,#landscape#architects#and#planners#have#had#to#deal#with#new#environmental#laws.#
Guidelines#and#financial#means#from#the#European#Union#are#also#involved#in#shaping#the#
professional#field#of#action,#creating#needs#for#lifelong#learning#activities#today.#Last#but#not#least,#
computers#are#a#driving#force#that#makes#it#necessary#to#update#skills#and#competencies.##

landscape#architects.#Alumni#of#universities#and#technical#colleges#are#only#allowed#to#call#themselves#
landscape#architects#when#they#are#members#of#the#Chamber#of#Architects.#If#they#are#not,#they#are#
“engineers#of#landscape#architecture”.#A#landscape#architect#(as#well#as#architects,#interior#designers#
and#city#planners)#can#only#be#listed#if#a#formal#degree#of#a#certain#standard#is#reached#(6–8#
semesters#of#formal#education#at#a#university#or#technical#college#in#the#field#of#LA)#and#if#they#have#
2–4#years#of#practical#experience#in#all#phases#of#the#design#and#planning#process.#Students#cannot#
be#members.#To#keep#their#title,#landscape#architects#must#be#engaged#in#additional#lifelong#learning#
activities,#gaining#learning#points#/#accumulating#hours#of#education#per#year#with#informal#learning#
activities#(controlled#by#the#Chamber#of#Architects#of#the#federal#states).#Certain#activities#on#the#
market#can#only#be#performed#by#certified#landscape#architects,#for#example#in#the#public#sector#or#
taking#part#in#competitions#of#a#certain#quality.#Many#landscape#architects#and#engineers#of#
landscape#architecture#are#members#of#the#Chamber#and#bdla.#bdla#members#address#their#issues#in#
the#committees#in#order#to#raise#professional#standards.#This#improves#the#semiformal!educational!

bdla#takes#part#in#the#standing#conference#of#universities!(5)!and!technical!colleges!(11)!which!offer!
landscape!architecture!degrees,#because#they#provide#formal!education!(bachelor,#master,#PhD)#and#
build#the#basis#for#informal#education#activities,#too.#The#bdla#education#committee#deals#with#issues#
of#professional#formal#education.#In#the#1970s#bdla#landscape#architects#caused#a#scandal,#because#in#
their#opinion#formal#education#at#universities#did#not#meet#the#needed#skills,#competencies#and#
professional#knowledge.#The#balance#between#theoretical#and#practical#knowledge#is#still#a#constant#
issue#of#debate.#
In#the#future,#universities#will#have#to#deal#with#a#shrinking#student#body.#Programmes#will#terminate#
