Success rate of sandblasted and acid-etched maxillary implants after a healing period of twelve weeks: A retrospective analysis The aim of this retrospective study was to prove that the success rate of implants with a sandblasted and acid-etched surface placed in the maxilla is not adversely affected by reducing the healing period to twelve weeks. The study examined 448 implants placed in the maxilla of 104 patients (58 men and 46 women) with an average age of 61 years; the implants were allowed to heal post insertion for a period of three months without loading. The implants were checked at regular intervals based on the success criteria of Buser within the parameters of a standardized recall programme. One implant was explanted before loading, resulting in a 5-year survival rate of 99.8 % for the implants in the study. All other implants (n = 447) fulfilled the success criteria of Buser. These results indicate that a reduction in the healing period to the times specified in the study for sandblasted and acid-etched implants of two different systems does not seem to have an adverse effect on the success of implants placed in the maxilla.
