HOPAK FROM “THE FAIR AT SOROCHINSKY” MODESTE MOUSSORGSKY Review: Campbell’s Slow Exit Should Be Heard By The Associated Press Glen Campbell, “Ghost on the Canvas” (Surfdog) Given the circumstances of its release, it would be wonderful to say how Glen Campbell’s presumably final album is an unmitigated triumph. Not quite, though it came closer than anyone had aright to expect. An in-demand studio pro in the 1960s and country-rock superstar in the 1970s, Campbell’s career faded with the years. But his family recently announced that Campbell, now 75, is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. “Ghost on the Canvas” and a lengthy tour to support it are designed to be his public farewell. Campbell, with producer and cowriter Julian Raymond, address the subject beautifully in the opening “A Better Place,” a musical prayer. “Some days I’m so confused, Lord,” Campbell sings. “The past gets in my way. I need the ones I love, Lord, more and more each day.” The title track, written by Paul Westerberg, is the disc’s strongest. Campbell’s voice is barely weathered by age and he and Raymond smartly pick strong songs by younger writers Teddy Thompson and Jakob Dylan. Campbell’s impressive supporting cast here includes Billy Corgan, Dick Dale, Chris Isaak and Brian Setzer, and the music is lovely. Unfortunately, the disc is weighed down by a series of superfluous instrumental interludes that mostly cast a pall. Mid-tempo arrangements predominate and with the ending songs “Strong” and “There’s No Me ... Without You,” there’s a feeling of repetition both musically and lyrically. Campbell’s farewell statement, however, is brave and deserves to be heard. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: The title cut evokes “Wichita Lineman” as it opens so much that it will give you chills, then stands powerfully as a composition on its own. By The Associated Press Last year’s “Madden NFL 11” was a great football game, packing enough new features and improvements for fans of earlier EA Sports versions to justify shelling out more cash for an upgrade. “Madden NFL 12” ($59.99; Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, rated E) also is a solid game when judged individually, but the tweaks seem far less significant than in previous years. EA Tiburon again upped the ante in the game’s visuals, lighting and presentation. The broadcast style presentation is slicker than ever, weaving in team specific tunnel entrances, multiple camera angles and stadium exterior shots. Small touches such as more realistic textures on players’ mesh jerseys and grass blades and snowflakes being kicked up from the field surface are impressive. As a Buccaneers fan, I was excited to hear gunshots from the pirate ship cannon when the Bucs entered the Red Zone — so much so that after the next play, I paused and panned the replay camera up to the rafters only to see empty flagpoles instead of what should be raised pirate flags. Ridiculously nitpicky? Sure. But when a video game franchise is in its 23rd year of existence, these are the little touches that fans find themselves looking for each year. With the continued upgrades appealing to the sense of sight, it’s surprising that the franchise has made such little progress with sound. Gus Johnson and Cris Collinsworth are back in the booth, and though there’s a bit of improvement on last year’s disjointed play-by-play announcing, there are some serious lagtime issues. “Touchdown” should be declared as the receiver crosses the goal line, not after he’s several steps into his celebration. The game’s player models clearly have been hitting the weight room during the NFL lockout, appearing bulkier than in past editions. And the new collision system takes those weights into account, so larger linebackers likely will get the better of smaller running backs. The hitting animations are greatly improved, but the usual gameplay annoyances are still there. Quarterbacks take too many sacks when they appear to have plenty of time to launch a pass or at least throw the ball away. On defense, corners and linebackers often bat down the ball when they should be making an interception, but I guess that too much the other way would make the game too frustrating on offense. This year’s “Madden” changed the kicking and punting system from the way-toosimple flick back-flick up motion to a golf game style meter in which you click once to start, click again for power and then click for aim. It’s slightly more challenging, but a better fit. EA’s new dynamic player performance does a better job accounting for players’ gameplay styles in areas such as consistency and confidence, which can change week to week depending on performance and lead to hot and cold streaks. EA Sports again offers us a great game, and with no competition from another brand, a recent “Madden” should be in everyone’s video game collection. But whether it’s worth an annual purchase will depend on the new features you’re looking for and your dedication to the franchise. Three stars out of four. In this photograph taken by AP Images for Fuse, Red Hot Chili Peppers perform at The Roxy, on Monday, August 22, 2011, in West Hollywood, California. (Casey Rodgers /AP Images for Fuse) Peppers Show They’re All Grown Up By The Associated Press Red Hot Chili Peppers, “I’m With You” (Warner Bros.) The Red Hot Chili Peppers have remained musically relevant for almost three decades by tweaking their formula (and sometimes their lineup) from album to album. Their 10th effort, “I’m With You,” continues that evolution, reuniting the group with producer Rick Rubin and revealing that the funk-rockers are (gasp) growing up. There’s still some irreverent rap and funky pop-punk among the album’s 14 tracks, but the tunes are more melodic and the themes more mature. Frontman Anthony Keidis broods about inevitable decay and the toll life takes on “Police Station” and “Annie Wants a Baby.” He sings of love and betrayal on “Even You Brutus?” and about his own maturity on “Factory of Faith,” a track anchored by Flea’s thumping bass. Keidis is at his most tender on “Brendan’s Death Song,” an acoustic ballad of goodbye. That’s not to say the album is a downer. Overall, it’s upbeat musically and lyrically. The opening track, “Monarchy of Roses,” crackles with energy, from Keidis’ bullhorn vocals to Chad Smith’s driving drums and Josh Klinghoffer’s distorted guitars. The single, “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie,” has almost a 1980s new-wave vibe. “Goodbye Hooray” is a snarling rock song, and “Dance, Dance, Dance” is downright jubilant, a happy track about “the holiness of play” and how we’re all in this together. Kind of makes growing up sound like a good thing. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Trumpets, Latin drums and layered guitars give “Did I Let You Know” a world-music feel. And Keidis gets extra points for cleverly rhyming “cheeky” with “Mozambiquey.” ——— Review: Wayne’s ’Carter IV’ doesn’t show growth Lil Wayne, “Tha Carter IV” (Cash Money/Universal Records) Since “Tha Carter III” made him a legitimate pop star, Lil Wayne spent eight months in jail and released three albums, including a collaborative effort with his Young Money crew. He also forgot the art of songwriting. That 2008, Grammy-winning blockbuster succeeded because the genius of free association rhymes found discipline: Nearly every “Carter III” track had a theme, storyline or single emotion for Wayne to wrap his witticisms around. “Tha Carter IV” proves an unworthy successor. It piles on metaphors, similes, double-entendres and word-images that work as punchlines but don’t cohere. You’ll chuckle along to that distinctive raspy voice and then wonder: What was that all about? Missing a golden opportunity to reflect on his time locked up, away from the spotlight, Wayne reveals little. His world is chock-full of words, empty of meaning. Not that he needs to make a point with every tune. Some of Wayne’s best work has been on similarly scattershot mixtapes. And both the album “In- tro” and “6 Foot 7 Foot” are thrilling examples of carefully considered but ultimately vacuous wordplay, the latter including Wayne’s now-classic pronouncement that “real G’s move in silence like lasagna.” But lyrical laziness drags down “How To Hate,” “Blunt Blowin” and “Megaman.” And does “So Special” really reference Lorena Bobbitt? In 2011? “President Carter,” using a sample from Jimmy Carter’s inauguration, makes some half-hearted nods at politics but falls back to nonsensical braggadocio: “I’m beneficial, I’ve been official. I say you rappers sweet, tiramisu.” The New Orleans rapper does find ways to make listeners snap to attention. A sinister beat and cocky chorus from Drake propels “She Will.” “Interlude” features punishing verses from Tech N9ne and Andre 3000. And Wayne uses “It’s Good” to respond to Jay-Z’s recent dismissal of Young Money on “H.A.M.” with a threat to kidnap Beyonce and hold her for ransom. No moving in silence there. Easily the most prolific top- tier rapper, Wayne has been praised in the past for generously putting out free mixtapes that with online buzz upstaged many of his peers’ heavily marketed studio albums. This time it’s the opposite: A disappointing high-profile release following his bizarre performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards. There, Wayne showcased two of the album’s least inspired songs: the Auto-Tuned “How To Love,” which features a syrupy melody manufactured specifically to win back the many fans of 2008’s “Lollipop”; and “John,” essentially an expansion of Rick Ross’ “I’m Not A Star,” the opening track from last year’s well-regarded “Teflon Don” album. Here’s hoping the diminutive 28-year-old shows some musical growth on “Tha Carter V.” ——— CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: The buzz single “6 Foot 7 Foot” effectively samples Harry Belafonte and, with a rapid-fire verse from Cory Gunz, delivers a head-spinning rush that equals Wayne’s 2008 smash “A Milli.” Dr. Bryant Barrows and Team At Oconee Dental Associates Would like to welcome the addition of DR. Recently his wife, "Kaye," has been coming to stay with my husband and me for a week or two at a time. The reason for the frequent visits is she has a boyfriend here in Arizona. I don't want to hurt her feelings, but she isn't getting the hint. My husband is retired and doesn't want Kaye in our home this often. She has vis- ited for three weeks over the past two months and wants to come back again. I think her boyfriend should pay for her lodging. However, thinking about a future with Randy, I wouldn't want his family's religious views forced on my children, either. I want them to make their own choices when they're old enough to understand. Randy wants an "ideal Christian family," where he raises his children on his terms and with his religious Call for New Improved Standard Features views. I don't feel children should be forced into something from birth. Again, I have no problem with Randy's or his family's beliefs; I just don't want them impressed on my children's young minds. What can we do? -- A MIND OF MY OWN DEAR MIND OF YOUR OWN: You can part friends and agree to disagree. If Randy wants an "ideal Christian family" in which he raises his children "on his terms and with his religious beliefs," there will be no compromise. And if you are adamant that your children choose their own beliefs when they're old enough to understand, you -- and they -- will be better off if the father you choose for them has similar beliefs. DEAR ABBY: My friend and roommate "Kristina" is a great person with a big heart. However, one of her "quirks" is starting to bother me, and I'm not sure how to deal with it. Kristina is an extremely picky eater who is repulsed by any ethnic food. I am Asian, and if we pass an Asian restaurant (or any other ethnic restaurant, for that matter) she makes comments like, "How can people eat that?" or, "That's disgusting!" When I have pointed out to her that her attitude can be insulting, she casually apologizes but her behavior continues. I realize Kristina is set in her ways and that there's probably nothing I can do to change her attitude toward cultural cuisine. I feel like a nag every time I suggest she's being insensitive. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can respond to her disparaging comments? -RAISED ON RICE IN CALIFORNIA DEAR RAISED ON RICE: "Great" people with "big hearts" do not say the first thing that pops into their heads, particularly when they know it can be hurtful. Because you have already told Kristina her comments are insensitive and insulting, and she continues to make them, it's time you recognize that she doesn't care about your feelings. The surest ways to insulate yourself are to avoid going near ethnic restaurants when you're with her, or spend less time in her company. QU HO ALITY M B Y O U I LT E S U F O R L AO N RL ES ND S! WWII Portraits Of Jewish ‘Counterfeiters’ Donated NEW YORK (AP) — He survived the Holocaust carrying the solemn portraits he drew of concentration camp prisoners who labored alongside him in one of the largest counterfeiting operations in history. For decades, those portraits have rarely been seen. Now the collection of 43 drawings by Felix Cytrin of his fellow Jewish prisoners have been donated to Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust memorial and museum, where researchers can study them and they will be exhibited for public viewing. They are among the few images that exist of the young men who worked in an infamous secret Nazi operation to produce fake money, fictionalized in the Oscar-winning film “The Counterfeiters.” Cytrin’s heirs donated them to Yad Vashem at a special ceremony Thursday. The works, most dated 1944 and 1945, were drawn on paper in pencil, charcoal and chalk. “I think what is amazing when you look at these portraits is how beautiful these young men look,” said Yehudit Shendar, the senior art curator for the Jerusalem-based museum, who came to New York City to receive the portraits. “Probably Cytrin felt a need to beautify them. Why to beautify them? To give them back the individuality that they were robbed of during that time,” she said. The works will be integrated into Yad Vashem’s art collection, and some will be exhibited in Jerusalem in December, along with other portraits created by artists imprisoned during World War II. Shendar said they belonged to a genre of portraiture by imprisoned artists who sought to document the faces of people who were likely doomed. The Nazis hand-picked from death camps a group of about 140 mostly skilled craftsmen at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp north of Berlin beginning in 1942, and gave them the dubious choice of creating bogus money for the Nazis or almost certain death. They were isolated away from the rest of the camp in barracks known as Block 19, surrounded by barbed wire. Initially, the goal of “Operation Bernhard” (named for its lead SS officer, Bernhard Krueger) was to counterfeit millions of British pounds that could be air-dropped on England to undermine the Allied country’s economy, but the plan did not work out. The bogus money was also used to finance Nazi espionage. Lawrence Malkin, the author of “Krueger’s Men: The Se- cret Nazi Counterfeit Plot and the Prisoners of Block 19,” said in notes for a 2011 speech that at the height of production in 1943 and 1944, the prisoners were churning out 650,000 fake British notes a month. That amounted to $6 billion or $7 billion in 2011’s money, Malkin wrote. Cytrin was born in what is now Warsaw, Poland, in 1894, and his name appears on a list of “Operation Bernhard” inmates recovered from a lake in Austria, where the Nazis dumped documents about the plot, according to the International Tracing Service in Bad Arolsen. A toolmaker and engraver, Cytrin was working in Leipzig when he was recruited to the secret plot and made chief of the engraving section, a critical job for the men working and living in Block 19. Malkin called him one of the dozen or so people who “figured fairly importantly.” “There are people who stand out,” he said. “And I’m sure that Cytrin stood out.” In early 1945, the counterfeiters were producing American dollars, but as the Red Army approached the opera- tion was demobilized; the prisoners were sent with the equipment to Mauthausen concentration camp, then to a smaller camp in Redl-Zipf. The prisoners were then taken to Ebensee, to be killed. But one day their Nazi guards disappeared, and Cytrin and the other members of “Operation Bernhard” were liberated in early May 1945. Cytrin, who had a brother in the Bronx, came to the U.S. with his wife in 1949 and found his way to New Jersey. His family said Cytrin’s attempt to do portraiture professionally fizzled, so he turned to tool and dye-making. He died in 1971. For many years after he had moved to the U.S., his family said he was suspicious of being watched by the government. The Associated Press has identified Army intelligence documents about Cytrin that remain classified at the National Archives in College Park, Md. At the ceremony on Thursday, Marcia Friday, who was then married to Cytrin’s grandson, said that about 25 years ago she discovered the disintegrating portraits in a cardboard portfolio at the family home in Pennsylvania.
