Die Firma Kowsky ist schon seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Orthopädie tätig. Aus Ostpreußen stammend, wanderte der Firmengründer Fritz
Ernst Kowsky um 1900 nach Südafrika aus. Nach hart erarbeiteten Erfolgen
warf der Erste Weltkrieg seine Schatten über das englische Kolonialreich
Südafrika. Nach den Wirren des Krieges schlug die Familie Kowsky den Weg
zurück nach Deutschland ein und wurde in Neumünster ansässig. Mit Paul
Kowsky gelangte hier auch die zweite Generation in das Unternehmen.
Zunächst lag der Schwerpunkt im Bereich der Orthopädie-Mechanik, verlagerte sich Mitte der 60er Jahre aber auf die Produktion von Gehhilfen und
orthopädischem Zubehör. Seit Anfang der 70er Jahre wird das umfangreiche
Sortiment in der eigens erstellten Fabrikationsstätte in Neumünster hergestellt. 1976 teilte sich das Gesamtunternehmen Kowsky-Orthopädie mit der
Übernahme durch die dritte Familiengeneration in zwei unabhängige
Betriebe, zum einen in das Sanitätshaus und zum anderen in die Fabrikation
orthopädischer Hilfsmittel unter der Leitung von Erwin Kowsky. Heute liegt die
Unternehmensführung der Erwin Kowsky GmbH & Co. KG in der Hand der vierten Generation. Unter der Geschäftsführung von Stefan Kowsky wurde das
Unternehmen nach EN ISO 9001:2008 und EN ISO 13485:2003 + AC:2007
zertifiziert.
Von jeher ist unser erklärtes Ziel ein hohes Maß an Kundenzufriedenheit und

Serving physical mobility for 100 years
The company Kowsky has already been active in the orthopaedics industry
since the end of the 19th century. The company founder Fritz Ernst Kowsky
came from East Prussia and emigrated to South Africa round about 1900.
He earned hard-worked success, however, World War I cast a cloud over the
British colonial empire South Africa. After the chaos of war the Kowsky
family returned to Germany and started to establish their family-run business
in Neumünster, situated in the middle of Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost
federal state of Germany. With Paul Kowsky the second generation entered
the company. At first the focus was on orthopaedic mechanics, but as of the
mid 1960's this has more and more changed to the production of walking aids and
orthopaedic accessories. Since the beginning of the 1970’s the comprehensive
product portfolio has been manufactured at the production location in
Neumünster, which has been built especially for this purpose. As the third
generation came into the business in 1976, the family-owned company
Kowsky Orthopaedics was split into two separate companies: The supplier
of medical equipment named Sanitätshaus Kowsky and the production of
orthopaedic accessories and aids led by Erwin Kowsky. Today, Erwin Kowsky
GmbH & Co. KG is led by the fourth Kowsky generation. Under the management
of Stefan Kowsky the company has achieved certification according to EN ISO
9001:2008 as well as EN ISO 13485:2003 and AC:2007.
Our declared aims have always been and still are a high level of customer

manufactured by Kowsky are supposed to – and always will – fulfil all

Kaltschaum
Verbundschaum
Der Rohstoff für Naturlatex stammt
vom tropischen Gummi- oder Kautschukbaum „Hevea brasiliensis”,
der vor allem in Südost-Asien
wächst. In der Rinde des glatten
bis zu 20 m hohen Stammes befinden sich Milchröhrchen, die den
Kautschuksaft enthalten. Die Rinde
wird bogenförmig angeschnitten,
damit die Latexmilch ausfließt und
in kleinen Bechern aufgefangen
werden kann. Der Milchsaft wird zu
feinporigem Schaum geschlagen,
anschließend in eine Form gegossen
und bei Temperaturen um 100° C
vulkanisiert. Naturkautschuk ist ein
nachwachsender Rohstoff.
Kaltschaum ist ein hochwertiges
Material, das ähnliche Werte wie
Latex erreicht und meist im Blockschaumverfahren eingesetzt wird.
Es handelt sich um einen Polyetherschaumstoff, der im Gegensatz zum
Standardschaumstoff als so
genannter HR-Schaumstoff
(HR= High Resilent = hochelastisch)
bei veränderter Rezeptur eine
Reihe von Vorteilen aufweist:
Die unregelmäßige, grobe Porenstruktur mit hoher Luftdurchlässigkeit ist atmungsaktiv und unterstützt ein angenehmes Sitz- und
Schlafklima. Bei geschmeidigem
Griff wird ein hochelastischer Polsterkomfort erreicht. Kaltschäume
zeigen ein gutes Einfederungsverhalten, der Schaum widersetzt sich
einer Belastung gleichmäßig und
bricht nur wenig ein.
Verbundschaum ist ein Material
mit sehr hohem Raumgewicht und
wird aus Schaumstoffabfällen
unter Einsatz eines Bindemittels
und Einwirkung von Hitze zu
Verbundblöcken gepresst, die
anschließend in die gewünschte
Form geschnitten werden.
Je nach Raumgewicht haben
Verbundschäume unterschiedlich
elastische Polsterwirkung.
Kissen aus Naturlatex haben eine
sehr hohe Punktelastizität,
die für die Körperanpassung und
damit für den Sitz-/Liegekomfort
verantwortlich ist. Hervorragende
mikroklimatische Eigenschaften
sorgen für ein angenehmes Körpergefühl speziell auf der Haut.
The raw material for natural latex
is won from the tropical rubber
tree “Hevea brasiliensis” primarily
growing in Southeast Asia.
The vessels containing the latex
sap are imbedded in the bark of the
smooth bole which can reach a
height of up to 20m. To harvest the
sap, an incision is made to tap the
vessels and the latex sap is collected
in small buckets. The sap is frothed
to receive fine pored foam which is
poured into a form and then vulcanized at temperatures of about
100°Celsius. Natural latex is a
renewable resource.

Cold foam counts as highest quality
material among foam types.
It is frequently used in foam slap
procedure and shows the same
values as latex. As HR foam (HR =
High Resilient) this polyether foam
differs from standard foams in
showing a series of benefits when
the recipe is modified: The uneven,
coarsely porous structure is highly
permeable to air and therefore
breathable, which forms a basic
requirement for a comfortable
seating and sleeping environment
quality. The flexible feel allows for
an extremely elastic cushioning
comfort. In comparison to composite
foam, cold foam types offer better
compression behaviour, they feature
a better weight distribution and
less cavity formation.
Composite foam is a material
showing very high volumetric weight.
During the production process,
foam scrap is pressed into composite
blocks using a binding agent and
heat. Finally, the blocks are cut
into the desired shape. Composite
foam types show different cushioning
comfort, depending on their
volumetric weight.
In order to ensure our excellent
flexibility and quality, we use
composite foam with a volumetric
weight of 140kg/m3 and a
compression hardness of 40 kPa
at 40% for our wedge cushions.
