PRESIDENTAL NOTES
Carpathia News Article
March 24, 2008
I’m writing this article after attending a week’s worth of executive leadership training as part of my job at
EDS. One of the concepts that was stressed was don’t be complacent with yourself, your career, and most
importantly your life. Complacency is one of our biggest challenges at the Club. Like many struggling
companies in the world today we too have become complacent in how we operate our Club, what our
purpose is, etc. and if we don’t start to change the world will pass us by.
As I reflect on my training my mind is buzzing with all kinds of ideas on how to improve the Club and
how we move forward. The challenge is finding the right balance between the business operation and our
true purpose as a cultural organization. Over the next several months you will see the Executive Board
take a more aggressive approach with changing the business operations. The Executive Board has taken
the time to discuss the pros and cons of each change and they unanimously approved a series of changes.
These changes will be officially announced once all impacted employees are notified. Don’t hesitate to
ask any one of the Executive Board Members or myself if you have any questions on the changes once
they are officially announced. In the end my goal is to get the business side operating in a predictable
manner so that we can direct our attention on the real important task of promoting and preserving our
culture.
In upcoming events, Carpathia will be hosting the National Landesverband der Donauschwaben and
Stiftung meetings on April 26th and 27th. Landsleit from around the United States and Canada will be
attending this annual meeting. If you are around Club on that weekend, please take the time to meet and
greet all of our guests.
In closing I want to congratulate all the returning and especially the new Board Members on their election.
We have our hands full, but now is the time for us to roll up our sleeves, and get to work to make our Club
the best it can be.

Frauengruppe

Carpathia Choir
Since the fall we have been practicing for our performances with our dedicated leader Erwin Aufdemberge.
During the Christmas season, we were invited to sing at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Warren on December
9th and at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Detroit on Christmas morning. We also had a delightful evening
with our friends and family members at our Annual Christmas Party at the Club.
The choir has been practicing very diligently for their upcoming events of the 2008 season. For example,
last February, the choir was invited and participated in singing two songs at the Sterling Heights Senior
Center. It was an international evening where many ethnic groups from the Metropolitan Detroit Area
participated and performed various dances and songs of their native country. We also tasted delicious ethnic
foods and had a very enjoyable evening.
On April 12th the choir will perform at the Sängerkommers at the Teutonia Club in Windsor, Ontario. We
anticipate a lovely evening with friends of all choirs of the Michigan Saengerbezirk who will participate in
singing beautiful songs both in German and English. You are cordially invited and hope you will join us.
After the Sängerkommers we will be preparing for our 95th Anniversary. We will have a joint concert and
banquet with our Frauengruppe. It should be a delightful evening. The “Evergreen” will also perform a few
songs. It is always nice to see some of the old “Mädchenkranz” and their families since many of them live
out of town.
After the spring concerts have ended, the choir is planning a trip to Stratford, Ontario on June 27th to see the
musical the” Music Man”. All of us look forward to enjoy a little break.
Thank you,
Franz Dosenberger

Schule

und so sitze ich allein und denke nach;
was ja ein jeder wissen sollt,

ins Land
mit Blueten zog er ein.
Die ersten Blumen die ich fand
bring ich dem Mueterlein.
Die Blume braucht Sonnenschein,
sonst geht sie bald zugrund.
Und ich brauch mein Muetterlein
Gott halte dich gesund.

Fruehlingsgedicht
Maifest
Sie war ein Bluemlein huebsch und fein,
hell aufgeblueht im Sonnenschein.
Wie herrlich leuchtet mir die Natur,
Wie glanenzt die Sonne! Wie wacht die Flur!
Es war ein junger Schmetterling,
der selig an der Blume hing.
Es dringen Blueten aus jedem Zweig
Und tausend Stimmen aus dem Gestraeuch.
Oft kam ein Bienlein mit Gebrumm,
und naschte saeuselnt da herum.
Und Freud und Wonne aus der Brust.
O Erd, o Sonne. O Glueck, o Lust.
Oft kroch der Kaefer kribbel-kraab,
am huebschen Bluemlein auf und ab.
O Liebe, o Liebe, so golden schoen.
Wie Morgenwolken auf jenen Hoehn.
Ach Gott, wie das dem Schmetterling,
so schmerzlich durch die Seele ging.
Du segnest herrlich das frische Feld,
die Bluetendaempfe die volle Welt.
Doch was am meisten ihn entsetzt,
das aller schlimmst kam zuletzt.
O Maedchen, Maedchen, wie lieb ich dich!
Wie blickt dein Auge, wie liebst du mich!
Ein alter Esel frass die ganze,
von ihm so heissgeliebte Pflanze.
So liebt die Lerche Gesang und Luft,
Und Morgenblumen den Himmelsduft.
Wilhelm Busch

Taste the Great Outdoors Carpathia Jäger Bankett 2008
By Monica Forest
With its famous wild game dinner, the Carpathia Jäger Bankett is known for its wild side. By adding a
good band and good friends, it could only become a good time.
The evening began with a delicious dinner that included a twist. This year, everyone had the chance to go
wild with a choice of all entrées for dinner: venison, wildschwein and Carpathia’s famous schnitzel. The
dinner was excellent with generous serving sizes and an invitation for seconds on wild game.
Tom Forest, the Jäger President, opened the event with welcomes, awards, and thanks. Tom welcomed
guests from many different hunting and cultural groups, and invited Carpathia President, John Huth, and
Carpathia 2nd Vice President, Mike Talan, to say a few words. John spoke about current hunting trips with
a new generation of hunters while Mike reminisced about past hunts with the Jäger. Then Tom announced
the winner of the Pellet Shooting Competition which is held after each Jäger meeting. For the fourth year
in a row, Tony Brandelik Sr. won the medal.
Tom began his thanks by complimenting the ladies in the kitchen for an excellent dinner which received
much applause. He followed with many thanks starting with Oskar Pscheidl, Steve Unger and Jeff Ewald
for donating the wild game, and Steven Seiberling who was responsible for the hunting the largest boar.
Thanks also went to Bela Frenczli and the many Jäger who helped him with the schlacht and setting up the
hall. Finally, special thanks went to Blondine Klimach, Christl Psotka, Resi Olsavsky, Magda Tittjung,
and Monica Forest for making knoedl and arranging centerpieces. It should give the group a real sense of
accomplishment that their effort became a fun night for everyone.
Tom Forest then went on to make a very good point about hunting in Michigan. During his business
trips to Germany, his colleagues explained that hunting in Germany is an expensive privilege for the few.
Licenses and guns are extremely restricted and access to land is even more difficult. However, Michigan
offers nice public land with opportunities for everyone, even youth. Tom’s point is that we should feel
blessed with our hunting opportunity, take advantage of it, and preserve it for the next generation.
After the presentation, the Bankett hit full swing. With the band, Enzian, keeping everything hopping, the
evening was a fun way to spend time with friends. Events like this give people a reason to connect with
each other. People were sharing interesting conversations over a delicious meal. Many new and longtime friends were there, laughing and dancing. Shots at the bar were toasting all sorts of things. Even the
ladies got into the action! Overall, the Jäger Bankett is about more than good food and good times. It is
about the good friends that bring it all together.

Dear Members’ and Guests:
The Board of Directors has approved a price increase for the Fish Fry’s effective March 28, 2008. Below are the pricing
adjustments:
•
•
•
Adult meal will be $9.00
Child meal will be $4.50

I want you to understand that we did not take this decision lightly. We clearly understand the impact this may have on
each and every one of you however we were left with no other option. Just like everywhere you turn these days costs
continue to increase. We did a complete analysis on the general market and we feel even with this price increase we are
still offering a plentiful meal at a great price.
I wanted to personally thank each and every one of you for your attendance at our Fish Fry events over many years. We
hope you will understand the reasoning behind this adjustment and continue to support our Club, enjoy the great food,
friendship, family atmosphere, and Donauschwaben Culture we have to offer.

Kickers Korner
Currently the Kickers have 27 teams within the organization ranging from 6years old to over 40. The soccer
school had approximately 165 children take part this past year. I would like to thank all of the coaches that
helped make it such a success. The 3v3 league was also a huge success. We had 42 kids particapate making
up 10 teams. I would like to thank Stefano Moraccini for working with the kids and making the 3v3 league
success that it is.
On the adult side of the game, the 1st and Reserve teams are getting ready for the 2008 season. We have
been busy looking at and evaluating players to improve on last years teams. This years Donauschwaben
Tournament is in Cleveland, Ohio, May 23-26. If you would like to go, please contact Mike Talan or Kurt
Seiberling for further information. The Women’s open team looks to improve on their 3rd place finish in the
league, and will also be representing Carpathia at the Donauschwaben Tournament. The O-30 teams will
combine their two teams and will also be making the trip to Cleveland. The over 30 women are looking for
players; if you are interested please contact myself or Erika Kuhlmann (kuhlmann19@hotmail.com). A second over
40 men’s team has been added this year and they will play in a less competitive level league.
On the youth side we have 19 teams. They continue to play at the highest level in their individual leagues
where the majority of the teams are winning their divisions and represent the Kickers and the club at the
state cup. Our youth teams have been playing and training indoors during the winter months and are
looking forward to the outdoor season. We will have a schedule of all the home games listed at the club so
come out and support all of the teams.
With the outdoor season right around the corner I would like to remind all of the parents to cherish every
moment that you get to spend watching your child compete and play.
Time goes by so quickly and before you know it your six year old is eighteen and you are left wondering
where the years went. I speak from experience. Like the title of the Kenny Chesney song says “Don’t
Blink.” Take it for what it is, a “Game.” Soccer is a great game, but a game nonetheless. Do not scream at
your child, or blame them for a loss. If they make a mistake, tell them what they did wrong and give them
an opportunity to improve and grow from their mistakes. I have yet to see a child that makes mistakes on
purpose. Let the coach’s coach and the players play. Moms, dads, and grandparents should just sit back and
enjoy the ride.
I am looking forward to the upcoming soccer season and hope to see everyone out at the games.
Yours for the good of the game.
Kurt Seiberling

Carpathia Jugend Gruppe
My First Königsball
By Elizabeth Pesta
The day was finally here! After watching Youthgroup perform for so many years, it was my turn to dance at
Königsball. The day started off by going to Tante Annie Griffin’s house to get my hair done. Tante Annie
told me stories of when she was with the dance group and some of the history of the dresses worn for this
occasion. Two hours later, a masterpiece was created! So many curls! I was asked during the night if that
was all my hair or if I had extensions put in! Thank you Tante Annie.
The next challenge was to put on my dress, of which my Tante Karin wore when she was in Youthgroup. I
managed to get the dress on with out messing up my hair. After putting on the long white gloves, I looked in
the mirror and thought to myself that I actually look like a princess.
All my family and two of my closest friends from school were there to see everyone dance at such a special
event. It was an honor to dance for Queen Jessica and King Michael.
Cleveland Landestrachtenfest
It’s time for a road trip. All the dance groups are preparing for the Landestrachtenfest in Cleveland, on Labor
Day weekend.
A block of hotel rooms at the Courtyard Cleveland Airport North have been reserved under “Carpathia Club”
for those that are interested. Please make your reservations, for the number of rooms is limited. No rooms
can be reserved with the discounted Carpathia Club rate after Friday, August 8.
All families are invited to stay at the Kalahari Waterpark Resort
Convention Center in Sandusky on Thursday, August 28. Rooms have
been reserved under “Carpathia Youth Group”. The cost will be $118 per
room and that includes 4 wristbands for the water park. Each additional
wristband will be $20.

Kindergruppe Updates
The Little and Middle groups have been practicing very diligently since the Fall. For the Club Christmas
Party, the kids gathered their hats, scarves, and winter items and danced to “Mr. Winter, Wo Biβt Du?”
choreographed by Cindy Schleis. The kids also performed on December 15th at the Sterling Heights Library
at their “Multicultural Passport” series. Katie Schwager started off the event describing a traditional German
Christmas to the audience. The kids then danced and decorated the Christmas tree with the traditional
ornaments of walnuts, paper stars, apples, and wrapped candy.
All the kids looked spectacular at Konigsball, especially the flower girls (Lilly Janisch, Kylie Kapraun, and
Kate Lingerfelt) the Scheppenträger (Jacob Lingerfelt and Sebastian Cole) and the Guards (Christian Matye
and Adrian Pledl).
The Little and Middle groups will be performing at the Romeo Library on May 12, 7:00 PM for their
“Welcome Spring” program. The kids will also be dancing at Maifest on May 18.
Cindy and I welcome our newest members: Anneliese Baker, Katrina Blasius, Kylie Kapraun, Jonathon
LaFave, Riley Stampfer, and RJ Stampfer.

KULTURGRUPPE
We would like to welcome all of our new members to the group as well as to Carpathia.
The Kulturgruppe has started strong this year with several new members and a fresh out look. Practices have
started out with a bang as we have already learned 2 new dances (a waltz and a polka), and have plans for 2
more new ones. We are also working on a few dances that were given to us from other clubs, to incorporate
into our dancing. Our practices are still every other Sunday from 7-9pm, if anyone would like to join us.
After long talks the women have decided on a new dirndl, and we will be showing them off on Labor Day in
Cleveland, (maybe sooner), and we are looking for new chokers to go with them as well as new shirts for the
men. And we have plans for new vests for our existing dirndls.
We have had several requests already for Oktoberfest performances, as well as others to keep us busy this
year. A first for us is that we have been asked to be part of the Sterling Heights Memorial Day Parade. They
are building an ethnic float to represent the different cultures in Sterling Heights, we will walk along side the
float (a few of us will ride on it) and will do a little polka at the judging stand.
We are also working hard on the Hoe Down. We will have a skit of the “Carpathia Brothers”, a country dance
for you to enjoy, western style food, drinks, a raffle and few surprises. The band will be playing Country as
well as German favorites. We hope you all will join us on August 16th.
Our elections are done and we are proud to announce our board members:
Leader:
Jennifer Blasius
Asst. leaders: Stephanie Kemmer
Julie LaFave
Treasurer:
Linda Tittjung
Secretary:
Julieanna Lorenz
We all look forward to being a strong leadership team and hope to move the Kulturgruppe into a strong long
lasting future.
For more information on the Kulturgruppe email us at donaudancers@sbcglobal.net or Call Jennifer at 586738-5005.

The German American Cultural Center remains a very
exciting endeavor. With fourteen groups coming together
under one umbrella, we create a very powerful alliance.
The challenge is learning how to leverage our influence,
so that we may sustain and advance our interests.
Yes, it can feel threatening sometimes to think of sharing
our clubs with others. It is human nature to fear new
people. A great person once said, “The world is full
of friends we have not yet met.” If we all could try to
embrace that philosophy, our groups / clubs can reap the
rewards.
Many families already know the value of
communications and studies the internet brings.
Now, our clubs are “wired”.
A few people ask, “Why do we need this?” The
