Please mark your calendars for February 24, 2013. The Club will be holding our Annual Membership Meeting beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the main hall. I would like to thank the entire Club, the Oktoberfest Committee, and everyone that helped on the 2012 Oktoberfest. What a big success it was. We had record crowds on Friday and Saturday. As with the Summer Fest, Sunday tapered off a bit, but all in all it was a very successful Oktoberfest. Thank you to everyone for all of the help. There are a number of Executive Board positions that will be up for election. I hope each of you will consider running for one of these positions. An Election Committee will be established in early 2013 and a meeting notice will be sent to all Active and Passive Members. Please reach out to the Election Committee if you are interested in running for one of the open positions. 2013 will be a very special year in the history of Club. We will be celebrating our 100th Anniversary. We will be celebrating this milestone event throughout the year with a special 100 Year Anniversary Celebration on the weekend of July 19, 20, and 21. The committee that is overseeing this event will be led by Mike Talan. Please see Mike if you are interested in participating on the committee. In closing, I would like to thank all of the people who help volunteer their time to help the Club. Thank you to the front office staff, the cooks, the kitchen staff, the serving staff, and the bartenders for all of your hard work during the last year. Thank you to all of the Untergruppen leaders and Executive Board Members for all of your hard work. Last but not least, thank you to my family and friends for all of their support. Including the 100th Anniversary Celebration, we have a number of special events that will take place at the Club during the very busy year. Fall / Winter 2012 Oktoberfest at the Carpathia Club By Linda Gerhardt (Continued from Page 1) The Oktoberfest schedule was jam packed with entertainment from opening to close each day. On Friday, the festival opened with the music of the Freddy Ziwich Band. On Saturday, festival goers danced to the music of Tommy Schober and the Sound of Sorgenbrecher and the Martin Brothers Band. Musical entertainment on Sunday included the music of the Hank Haller Ensemble in the afternoon and Enzian in the evening. During band intermissions each day, festival goers were treated to folk dance performances by the Carpathia Kindergruppe, Jugengruppe, Kulturgruppe, and Schuhplattler folk dance groups. Throughout the weekend, guests could try their luck at the Carpathia Jäger shooting booth. On Saturday and Sunday, a Kinder Platz with numerous games and a gigantic inflatable obstacle course was available for the younger crowd. Each afternoon, brave guests could also try their luck at the always popular sauerkraut eating contest, which was hosted this year by George Schleis. As always, a selection of authentic German food and drink was available all weekend long. At the bar, guests were treated to Spaten Oktoberfest Beer, while the kitchen served up Weisswurst, Smoked Brats, Hungarian sausage, Schnitzel sandwiches, homemade potato salad, sauerkraut, Oktoberfest pretzels, and an assortment of pastries and tortes. In addition, this year, guests were also treated to potato pancakes that were grilled to order and served with a choice of apple sauce or sour cream. “The potato pancakes were a huge hit and the kitc hen was busier than it has ever been - especially Saturday afternoon,” commented outside kitchen co-chair Cyndi Seubert. On Saturday evening, after a performance by the Carpathia Jugendgruppe, the new royalty selections for upcoming year were announced. Outgoing Youthgroup Royalty Christian Beattie and Samantha Sesko announced that Michael Bering, Erika Schleis, and Elizabeth Pesta will represent the group for 2013 and be honored at the Königsball der Jugend, which will be held at the Carpathia Club on Saturday, February 16. Throwing such a successful event year after year requires lots of behind the scenes organizing, several planning meetings, and the effort of many hard working people. Many thanks go out to the teams of members and friends who support the festival each year. Pure Michigan Commercial By Anna Marie Tittjung During the last week in August, Carsten Grotloh was contacted by the Pure Michigan commercial advertising campaign about having some Carpathia dancers audition for an upcoming commercial. In total, 10 couples auditioned at the Club on a Sunday afternoon, and on Monday, 3 couples were contacted about being in a television commercial to be filmed in Frankenmuth. Adam Zeig, Adam Schwager, and Kurt Lingerfelt, along with Amanda Schwager, Samantha Sesko, and Jessica Thomas headed up to Frankenmuth that Wednesday for a day of filming. The day started off with the Carpathia dancers filling in as extras on a river boat ride on the Cass River. They were then treated to lunch at Zehnder’s, before heading to the garden patio at the Bavarian Inn, where the 3 couples performed a Schuhplattler dance for the film crew. The commercial is scheduled to air sometime next year. Watch for some of our own Carpathia members the next time a Pure Michigan commercial shows up on your TV! - 11 - Fall / Winter 2012 Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Fall / Winter 2012 Jäger Königsball 2012: The Elegant One By Monica Forest Did you ever notice that siblings can have totally different personalities? That’s the way I see the two dances that the Jäger host each year. One is elegant and the other is wild, but you love them both. The Jäger Königsball is the elegant one. That makes sense, because it is a king’s ball, and everyone is in the mood to celebrate. This year’s event included wild game hors d'oeuvres and a wine tasting. There were wines from 11 different countries this year, including popular Romanian and South African wines. Many guests tasting the wines have a real expertise, and the discussions around the tasting tables were quite lively. So, what about that other Jäger dance? You know the wild one? Well, it’s called the Jäger Banquet, so expect a feast and festivities. Even though it’s primarily called “wild” because of the wild game dinner, the festivities also have the wild reputation. Don’t be surprised to see women wearing everything from dirndls to leopard print. Because of the unique wild game dinner and the fun atmosphere, this is a great event to bring along friends for an evening out. The Jäger hope to see you March 9th at the Jäger Banquet. Tom Forest, the current Jäger President, hosted the 42nd annual Jäger Königsball honoring the top shooters. The event took place at the Carpathia Hall on Saturday, October 13. Congratulations to Ed and Monica Speckhardt, this year’s king and queen. Their court includes First Ritter Eric Rausch and Second Ritter Bob Hammer, who earned their way onto the court with great shooting. Additional awards, trophies and 25 year pins were also presented. During the presentation, Tom mentioned the fun tradition among the past queens. If a “Königin” ever forgets to wear her crown pin to a Jäger function, she has to buy a round of drinks for all the other queens. Watch out, ladies! A big event like this is a group effort, and all of the extra time and care showed. The Jäger thank everyone that helped set-up, served wine, donated wine, brought fresh flowers, and donated all of the delicious appetizers. Finally, special thanks to Darin Lenhardt for a beautifully decorated and well-run event. The Jäger Königsball lived up to its elegant reputation. - 12 - Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Fall / Winter 2012 Frauengruppe Hosts Fall Fashion Show By Linda Gerhardt On Wednesday, October 17, the Carpathia Frauengruppe (Ladies Group) hosted their annual Fall Fashion Show at the Carpathia Hall in Sterling Heights. Nearly 200 guests, including 3 tables of Red Hat Ladies and even a table of gentlemen, filled main hall for the popular afternoon event. Those who attended were treated to a delicious luncheon, followed by the latest fall fashions provided by Dress Barn of Utica, as well as a raffle of donated prizes that included everything from potted mums to bottles of wine and gift cards. Before lunch was served at just past noon, guests had the opportunity to mingle or enjoy a drink from the bar, which was tended by Carsten Grotloh. After a welcome greeting from Frauengruppe Leiterin Irene Dietz, Carpathia Manager Karen Beattie called tables to lunch buffets set up on either side of the hall. The delicious meal prepared by lead cook Rosa Grusling and her team included chicken Schnitzel, as well as oven roasted potatoes, a vegetable medley of broccoli & cauliflower, and a mixed salad. After lunch, guests were treated to a dessert that consisted of a slice of tart lemon layer cake and fresh-brewed coffee. The afternoon’s program started with the introduction of Lynn Burns and Stephanie Clement, representatives from the Dress Barn, located on Hall Road in Utica. Fourteen Carpathia Club members then modeled the latest trends in fall fashion. The models started off the show with casual outfits they selected for themselves, including jeans, layering t-shirts, jackets, and sweaters. As each model entered the hall and walked around the dance floor, Lynn Burns from the Dress Barn described the various pieces and provided the cost of the outfit. Models then walked around the guest tables on either side of the hall so guests could get a closer view of each outfit. Following the display of casual wear, models entered the hall wearing career wear separates, including suits, slacks, blazers, and sweaters. After a short break to allow the models to change, they entered wearing beautiful evening fashions, including dresses of various lengths, as well as two-piece sets. (Continued on Page 14) - 13 - Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Fall / Winter 2012 The models, in order as shown above, included Irene Dietz, Inge Pfropper, Mary Ann Virchow, Resi Gerber, Karin Schwalbe, Kathy Schuck, Stefi Schultz, Melissa Morelli, Mary Stefan, Marie Eppich, Terry Foster, Anna Marie Tittjung, Ann Marie Szymanski, and Katharina Schwager. After the completion of the evening wear display, all of the models lined up in front of the stage, where Irene Dietz gave them each a small thank you bouquet. Guests showed their appreciation by giving all of the models a hearty round of applause. Bouquets and special thanks were also given to Lynn Burns and Stephanie Clement of the Dress Barn by Irene Dietz. (Continued on Page 15) - 14 - Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Fall / Winter 2012 (Continued from Page 14) Throughout the afternoon, members of the Frauengruppe sold tickets for the final event of the afternoon: the raffle. Guests lined up their tickets and Irene Dietz called numbers in quick succession, as ladies from the Frauengruppe delivered the various prizes to the lucky winners. By three in the afternoon, Fashion Show 2012 had drawn to a close. The annual event was a great success. - 15 - Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Fall / Winter 2012 Weinlese Fest By Carsten Grotloh On Saturday, October 27, over 150 people attended the Weinlese Fest at the Carpathia Club. The doors opened at 6 p.m. for the late fall event hosted by the Kulturgruppe. Grapes hanging from decorated trellises greeted guests as they entered the hall. The jail stood strong in the corner, with the bailiff waiting and guarding what would become a revolving door of children and grownups – all who tried but failed to steal the bunches of grapes. The bar, tended by Andrew Beattie and Mike Morelli, was well stocked. The kitchen served up sausages and hot dogs, as well as cake and coffee. The night opened with the welcoming of attending dignitaries and guests and the recognition of the workers. The rules regarding grape theft were then read: you can only steal when the band is playing, if you are caught you will be hauled off to jail until someone bails you out for $1, and in return for being bailed out, you must dance with your rescuer. At 8 p.m., the music of Enzian filled the air, and the dance floor and the jail quickly filled up with children and adults alike. At the first band break, guests were treated to a performance by the Kindergruppe Little and Middle dance groups. Once the music started up again, the aroma of freshly baked pretzels, which were sold by ladies from the Kulturgruppe, filled the air. At the second band break, the Jugendgruppe, the Schuhplattler, and the Kulturgruppe all performed to the audience’s delight. All current and former Youthgroup dancers were then summoned to the floor to dance a few favorites, including the Sauerländler and the Markländer. Lines for the Sauerländler were 6 couples deep in all four directions! By this time, all the grapes had been stolen, the jail had been emptied, and Enzian continued to play as the Kulturgruppe sold raffle tickets. The raffle was held during the last band break. Baskets of Halloween candy and bottles of wine were raffled off as the crowd cheered with every winner. The evening then wound down as the band played everyone out the door. The event was a very successful. However, this will be the last Weinlese, at least for a while. The event will not be held in 2013 due to the jam-packed 100th Anniversary year schedule. Early in 2014, the Kulturgruppe might try something new. Ideas such as a 50’s, 60’s, or Big Band Night, or possibly a Schlachtfest are being considered. Thanks to everyone that attended. I hope you had fun. I know I did! - 16 - Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Fall / Winter 2012 Carpathia Seniors Annual Card Party: A Good Time Was Had by All By Linda Gerhardt On Sunday, November 4, the Carpathia Hall was a busy place to be. The larger half of the main hall was filled with guests attending a large wedding shower, while the smaller half was set up for the annual Card Party hosted by the Carpathia Seniors. After the lunch dishes had been cleared, guests got to business with what they had come to the Club to do: play cards. Games of euchre, pinochle, Fuchsen, and Ramschle quickly got started and continued through the afternoon. Over 100 people had made advance reservations for the event. The number that actually came to enjoy an afternoon of friendship and card playing, however, was well over 170. Those in attendance included not only members of the Carpathia Club and the GACC, but also neighbors of the Club from the surrounding community. During the card playing, bartender Paul Hemmond served guests a selection of soft drinks, beer, and wine. Two coffee stations set up on either side of the hall also provided both regular and decaf coffee, as well as tea, throughout the afternoon. At approximately 3:00 p.m., baskets of Carpathia’s famous Kipfel, which were still nice and warm, were served. The smaller half of the main hall was filled to capacity with card players and was set up with the standard round and rectangular tables, as well as several smaller card tables. The Member’s Bar also hosted several tables of card players from the younger ‘middle-aged’ generation. Doors opened at eleven for the Card Party. The bar was open to allow guests to visit with friends and enjoy a drink before lunch. To get the event started, secretary of the Carpathia Seniors, Margaret Pelvay, welcomed everyone. At noon, a buffet lunch prepared by the event’s main cook, Rosa Grusling, and her team was then served. The menu included pork Goulash over noodles and boiled potatoes, along with a mixed green salad with a choice of 3 dressings and bread and butter. After the meal, guests were treated to flaky and delicious homemade apple or cheese strudel and fresh-brewed coffee. Despite the larger number of guests who attended the event than was anticipated, there was more than enough of Goulash to go around! Additional noodles were boiled, and extra pans of oven roasted potatoes prepared for the wedding shower rounded out the buffet. Later, as the afternoon drew to a close, the card players from the Member’s Bar joined everyone in the main hall section for the last part of the event: the raffle. Helmut Egger tore himself away from card playing to call the numbers for the many raffle prizes donated by the Seniors Group. Wonderful prizes included everything from gift baskets and fish fry tickets to bottles of wine and gift cards. By 4:00 p.m., the event drew to a close. The Carpathia Seniors’ Card Party was a great success and a good time was had by all. For more card playing fun, join the Carpathia Choir at their Annual Card Party on Sunday, February 3, 2013, and the Carpathia Frauengruppe at their Card Party on Sunday, March 17, 2013. Fall / Winter 2012 A Full Hall for Kirchweihfest By Linda Gerhardt On Saturday, November 10th , the main hall at the Carpathia Club was at near capacity for the annual Kirchweihfest. The evening started with a Tischgebet said by newly-crowned Jugendgruppe royalty member Erika Schleis. Banquet Manager Darin Lenhardt then called guests up to a wonderful buffet dinner of chicken Schnitzel, pork roast, mashed potatoes, green beans, and mixed salad prepared by lead cook Resi Huth and her team . Following dinner, the program was opened by Jugendgruppe Leiterin, Karin Schwalbe, who welcomed everyone to an evening of Donauschwaben tradition. Karin recognized Youthgroup members from Akron, Cleveland, Chicago Aid Society, and Milwaukee, who had traveled to Carpathia for the event. Ehrenpräsident and Former Youthgroup Leader Franz Pelvay and Carpathia Youthgroup founder Adam Medel were also recognized. Karin’s introductions were then followed by a few words from Carpathia Club President John Huth, Jr., and the Einmarsch of all dance groups, led by the new Jugendgruppe royalty and the colorful Kirchweih Strauss. The band for the evening, the Hank Haller Ensemble out of Cleveland, kept the dance floor full throughout the night. During each band intermission, guests were entertained with performances by the various Carpathia dance groups. The Kindergruppe performed first and did some new dances that delighted the crowd. The Jugendgruppe, with the girls still dressed in their Trachts, treated the audience to several dances, as well as a song and short skit. Later, the Kulturgruppe, which has grown recently due to some new members, performed during the thir d break. Near the end of the evening, before the ribbon covered Kirchweih Strauss was brought to the center of the stage for the traditional auction and after the girls had changed from their Trachts into their ‘fun Dirndls,’ the Jugendgruppe did another performance. Auctioneer Kurt Seiberling then started off the bidding for the prize as guests waved dollar bills in the air. As the girls from the Jugendgruppe recognized each guest, the bid increased steadily. In order allow Kurt to catch his breath, George Schleis jumped in to keep the bids going. When the buzzer sounded, bidding had reached $318 and the last dollar held in the air before the buzzer belonged to Anna Marie Tittjung. Anna Marie and husband Pete were then serenaded by the band and cheered by the audience as they danced with the Strauss. After the auction, guests slowly started to filter out of the hall, closing another successful Kirchweihfest at Carpathia. Lustige Kerweihbuben --Stefan Jaeger Kirchweih Fest A Donauschwaben Celebration from Europe to America Elizabeth Walter’s book, Kirchweih Fest, is a beautiful 11-inch by 11-inch hardcover, with 26 full color illustrations. The vibrant illustrations, which Elizabeth created using an etching and aquatint method, show how a Kirchweih Fest was celebrated in her hometown of Karlsdorf, and how the tradition is continued here in America. The weekend before our own Kirchweihfest, Carpathia Kindergruppe Leader, Cindy Schleis, presented the family of each Kindergruppe dancer a signed autograph copy of this beautiful hardcover book to teach the children about this wonderful Danube Swabian tradition. A signed copy of this book can be purchased through Pannonia Press for $24 plus $4 shipping by writing Kirchweih is a wonderful tradition of the Donauschwaben culture. The celebration of the Kirchweih Fest took place in almost every village where Donauschwaben lived. The Kirchweih celebration was brought over to America by Danube Swabians who emigrated here, and is still celebrated by young and old in a lot of Donauschwaben clubs in America. ELSA WALTER verkaufte die neuerschienene Übersetzung “The Great Swabian Migration” das bekannte Buch “Der Grosse Schwabenzug” von Adam Müller Guttenbrunn, sowie ihr Buch “Kirchweih Fest:A Donauschwaben Celebration from Europe to America”. Fall / Winter 2012 The Great Swabian Migration An Historical Novel by Adam Mueller-Guttenbrunn Translated to English by Linda Byrom The historical novel Der Grosse Schwabenzug by iconic Schwaben author Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn has been translated as The Great Swabian Migration by Linda Byrom. This classic book tells the fictional stories of a bride from Swabia who travels down the Danube to meet her bridegroom; a family from Pfalz that travels by wagon to find a new homeland; and Count Klaus Florimund Mercy, Governor of the Banat, who convinces his nephew to help him achieve his vision of a new paradise. Their fates intertwine in this fascinating tale which chronicles the journey of thousands of Danube Swabians who came mostly by boat to find a new homeland in the Banat, Batschka, and Schwäbische Türkei, areas which are now in Hungary, Romania, Serbia, and Croatia. Fall / Winter 2012 Millions Cried… No One Listened… A Documentary by Ann Morrison, Producer / Director Millions Cried… No One Listened. curtain after World War II. That’s what happened to 15 million Germans living behind the iron The Second World War ended in May of 1945 for Germany, but not for the millions of Germans who lived in Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Slovakia, East Prussia and the surrounding areas. The German people who had lived in these countries for no less than three hundred years were to be expelled from their homes and taken out of these countries according to the Potsdam Conference. This conference was held directly after Germany surrendered. Attending this conference was The Big Three, Truman, Atlee and Stalin. The decision was made to eliminate the Germans from these areas and send them back to their “Home Land.” The problem was Germany was not their home land and had not been for at least 7 generations. The decision was made and the document signed with one very misleading word. ELIMINATE! Truman and Atlee thought they were giving permission for the German population to be moved from one country to another, but Stalin had a different definition for the word. Eliminate gave him permission to destroy a population and he had a couple of men who would help him do it. Edvard Benes, the President of Czechoslovakia and Marshall Joseph Tito were right there to lend a hand. They took on the job of sending as many Germans as they could to Russia and Ukraine to rebuild what was destroyed during the Second World War. They chased others across surrounding borders, put them into camps that were once used for the Jewish people, turned entire villages into camps, tortured, starved and executed millions and it was all done with a hand shake and a smile from our countries’ leaders. The survivors of this horror have told me of their pain which I made into my first documentary called The Forgotten Genocide, but there was so much more to tell. I’ve spent the past year traveling to Europe, Canada and throughout the United States interviewing and researching to put together a six film series that will give the facts of what happened and how it is still affecting us today. Fall / Winter 2012 From the Jäger… So much has happened since the last update: new members, successful shooting booths at both festivals, and trap competitions with our friends from Leamington, Canada. Obviously, the high point of the fall season is hunting, but the kick-off of the season is the annual King Shoot Competition. Congratulations Ed Speckhardt, the new Jäger König. By winning again, he has shown his consistency with shooting through the years. Eric Rausch won the 1 st Ritter title, with the 2nd Ritter going to Bob Hammer. Good job, guys! The Jäger are friends, but each of the titles and trophies must be earned with good shooting. The trophies go to Tony Brandelik Jr. for 1st Trophy, Jeff Ewald for 2nd Trophy and Bob Psotka for 3rd Trophy. For the Past Kings’s Trophy, only past Jäger Königs are eligible, and this competition is shot from the 25 yard line making it our most difficult. This year’s winner, for the second year in a row, is Jeff Ewald with a score of 19. Additional trophies are in the High Overall series. The first High Overall for our three shoots went to Bob Psotka. The High Overall Senior went to Paul Tittjung, and High Overall Junior, for the second year in a row, goes to David Tittjung. David is Paul’s grandson, so good shooting must run in the family. Right, Pete? Finally, thank you. Whether you are a Jäger or a Jäger’s wife, whether your dad/son is a Jäger or you are friend of the group, thank you. You volunteered, worked, laughed and pitched in whenever you saw help was needed. You are the reason we are a group and a club. The Jäger wish everyone happy holidays, and we wish all hunters good luck and memorable hunting. --Tom Forest, Carpathia Oberjäger - 25 - Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Spotlight Player: Olivia Farenger Kickers Corner The Fall season just ended for the Kickers. I could not be more proud to be the General Manager after this great season. Our coaches came out of the gate determined this season! Most teams immediately entered into some great tournaments and most came out of them victorious and 90% of them made it to the finals. Our league play has seen many of our youth teams either winning their division or finishing in the middle. All but one of our teams either took 1st or 2nd in the Premier League. To say that this season has been successful is an understatement, and I am anxious to see how well they will do in the Spring! As soon as the Fall season ends, we immediately move indoors for training and begin our first session of indoor soccer. We currently use three local facilities to train at and we will also hold Coerver training for our youth players. Recently, the Kicker’s board met and we continue to work on streamlining our program and adding new and innovative items to set our club apart from the others. Our program has now reached the point where have bridged the gap between the youth and the adult program and our players graduate with the skill level and maturity to play at the next level. The adult teams have completed their seasons as well; the First and Reserve team combined some players to play additional games in a late summer league. While many of the players have gone off to play at the colleges they attend, we look forward to them returning to get back to the business of bringing the National Cup back to the Club. So much goes on behind the scenes. We are fortunate to have such a driven and ambitious group of coaches and managers. There is no task that they are not up for, or that they will not accomplish. If you would like to get a good look at some of the teams, join us on a Friday or Saturday at any of the indoor facilities. You can obtain schedules by going to the websites…. www.ultimatesoccerarenas.com/ www.libertyparkofamerica.com/ www.totalsoccerinc.com/fraser.htm Unfortunate Injury Sidelines U9 Girls Blue Team Player --Keith McVettie, General Manager Fall / Winter 2012 This month’s spotlight player is Olivia Farenger! Olivia is playing on the Girls U11 team, coached by Jason Goldsmith and Hans Wild. Olivia joined the Kickers after meeting Coach Jason Goldsmith and Coach Jeff Janisch. She started playing under the direction of Coach Hans Wild. Coach Hans has said about Olivia; “She is a player that can play offense, defense or midfield. She always gives 100% at whatever she does, whether it is practice, scrimmage or a game. She has a great attitude, and always has a smile on her face. She makes practice fun for players and coaches.” Coach Hans also says that in all of his years coaching, Olivia has been the most “eager to learn” person he knows. Olivia has a desire within her to become a better soccer player and works at it, even on her own time. You can often see Olivia around the Club. She has made it her home. She tells us “I have made a lot of good friends playing soccer. I love playing for Carpathia!” Olivia loves to play soccer and hang out with her friends. She is really good at math and it’s her strongest subject. Her favorite restaurant is Outback. She hopes to move to Florida one day and play soccer and become a marine biologist. Olivia spent some time working with me at the Club clean up and I can’t tell you what a pleasure it was. It’s clear that she is a hard worker and she is so happy and eager to help others. You can’t miss this little girl – she has a giant smile and a super attitude! We are looking forward to watching her play and grow up as a Kicker! --Linda McVettie On September 8th, the U9 Girls Blue Team (Galui) experienced an unfortunate loss. This was the first game of the season, and Avery Sikorski broke both bones in her lower leg. She was transported by ambulance to Troy Beaumont hospital for treatment. She was given a long leg, non-walking cast with a great prognosis of not needing surgery. This was Avery’s first season with Carpathia. Her family made the decision to leave Fraser to come to our club. Avery and her family were committed, cast and all, to come to all practices and suit her up and attend all games. She is now cast free, and is starting light practice and conditioning. With approval from her doctor, we expect Avery to participate in the 2nd session of indoor in January. The U9 Girls Blue team would like to extend a huge “thank you” to all of Carpathia. Avery received many cards, gifts, well wishes and overall support from our Carpathia family. You are truly appreciated. --Cheryl Longo - 28 - Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Successful Fall Season for Kickers U11 Boys Blue and Yellow Teams Fall / Winter 2012 Kicker’s Unsung Hero: Anna Distefano Congratulations to the Carpathia Kickers U11 boys “blue” and “yellow” teams for a successful Fall season! The “blue” team was the champion of both the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Invitational and the Petoskey Autumn Blast Tournament this Fall. They were also in first in the Premier Division of the Michigan Youth Soccer League (the league’s highest division) at the time this article was written. Their record was 17 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties. The team has exhibited superior skill and speed versus their competition and has played with a hard-nosed, physical style which has led to their success. They’ve also carried positive attitudes, good sportsmanship and professionalism, both on and off the field. The team has been led by Luke Montgomery, Sean McConnell and Braden Zarschler, along with excellent goaltending from Roberto Vitale. However, “there are no superstars on this team…just a bunch of skilled, quick players who work hard and play together as a team,” said Coach Gus Panos who has coached most of the boys since U-8. Daniel McClorey, Ben Komnenovic, Giulio Galui, Nick Pulcini, Jack Panos and Ryan Miller have been solid contributors offensively, and the defense has been hard to beat with the tenacious, solid play from Mateo Giulianelli and Bronson O’Kray. The team will train hard all winter and hopes to continue its winning ways during the winter and spring league and in tournament play. The “yellow” team, coached by first year Kicker coach Stefan Harris, also had an excellent Fall season. This first year team went to the semi-finals of the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Invitational, winning 3 games and losing 1. They went on to tie for first place in the major gold division of MYSL with a record of 7-1-2. “I’m so impressed with the level of play that these young boys have performed at all year,” said Coach Harris. “The boys have bright soccer futures ahead of them if they continue to work and train hard.” The team was led by Mikey Dedvukaj, Kamil Nawrot, and Alex Zaleczny. Jack Simms and Jackson Griskie provided great goalkeeping and Andrew Rowe, Ryan Rubarth and Kalub Odett were solid defensively all season. Chase Gahlau, Alex Toghe, Evan Decook and Matt Mahoney provided skill and strength in the midfield. --Gus Panos on Behalf of the Kickers - 29 - Anna joined the Kickers and for as long as I can remember has been a huge part of every tryout, fundraiser, clean up and Club function we have ever needed people to help out with. In a soccer organization, your most important time is tryouts. It’s a time when teams are formed and parents get a good look at how organized and well run a club is. There are a million questions regarding fees, coaches, practices, age groups and tournaments. Anna took on the task a few years ago of organizing and preparing our coaches for tryouts. She has given the coaches time to focus on preparing a good tryout and securing players for teams. It is so crucial that the process is smooth, because often it is the parent’s first look at the Kickers. This is not all Anna does. Last weekend the Kickers held their fall clean up. It’s a time when we gather to clean up the grounds, put the bleachers and benches away, take down the nets, put the goal posts away and move the picnic tables from the patio into the garage for winter storage. To make it more difficult, indoor season has moved up and all while teams are still playing outdoors – so attendance at clean up becomes difficult when many of our teams are still playing games. Anna and her son showed up bright and early to lend a hand. I was putting some nets in a bag and looked across the parking lot where I saw Anna lifting a 500 pound table with the help of some of the men who showed up. The last task was going around the entire parking lot and sweeping the pine needles. Anna stayed until the end and with her help we completely cleaned the entire complex. She held a class to teach our new coaches how to use a program that the league is making mandatory and has stepped forward so many times when we have needed volunteers to help out at any event! She is a GEM and the Kicker’s are extremely lucky to have her as part of our group. She has never let us down when we needed help and is such an asset. Her dedication and commitment is evident in everything she does. Thank you Anna – the Kickers appreciate you and all that you do for us!!! --Cheryl Longo Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Jugendgruppe / Youth Group The Jugendgruppe had several outside performances this fall, beginning with the Landestreffen in Kitchener, Ontario, over Labor Day weekend. It was, as always, a fun weekend for the kids and parents – a chance to meet up with friends from throughout the US and Canada and dance! We also performed at St. Irenaeus Church in Rochester, St. Joseph’s Church in Detroit, Canterbury Village, and twice for the Detroit Concert Choir. At the Carpathia Hall, there were performance for the Weinlesefest, Kirchweih and the Oktoberfest. At the Oktoberfest, the Jugendgruppe not only danced but also sold homemade ‘Lebkuchen Herzen’ decorated by some of our girls, Moms and Omas – a big Thank You to those who put in the labor to make this possible. Upcoming for us is the Membership Christmas Party where we will participate in the program. By the time you read this, we will be hard at work preparing for the Jugend Königsball on February 16, 2013. We are planning a great program and hope that you will all join us on the formal evening. As we close out the year of the Jugendgruppe’s milestone 50th Anniversary, we look forward to next year and Carpathia’s historic 100th Anniversary. Thank you to everyone for your interest and support this year. We wish you a Merry Christmas with your families and a safe and happy New Year. --Karin Schwalbe, Jugendgruppe Leiterin Fall / Winter 2012 Congratulations to Our 2013 Royalty! The Jugendgruppe started off the fall season with the crowning of the new royalty. On Saturday night of the Oktoberfest we announced the Royal Court: Elizabeth Pesta, Michael Bering, and Erika Schleis. Elizabeth Pesta is the daughter of Christine (Egger) and Chris Pesta. Elizabeth began dancing with the Kindergruppe and continued all the way through to the Jugendgruppe. She has become an excellent dancer and is always ready to take part in any event or activity we do – and always with a smile! She graduated from Stevenson High School, class of 2012, and is now attending Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH, majoring in Marine Biology. Erika Schleis is the daughter of Carpathia Young Adult Group alumni George and Cindy Schleis. Erika also began in the Kindergruppe and worked her way up to the Jugendgruppe. She is another great dancer and her vocal ability is definitely an asset to our singing. A 2012 graduate from Chippewa Valley High School, Erika now attends Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. Her major is Occupational Therapy and she is on the varsity ski & snowboard race team. Michael Bering is the lucky gentleman on our court this year. His parents are Christa and Wolf Bering; Wolf is a former Jugendgruppe member. Michael also began in the Kindergruppe. He was away from the Jugendgruppe for some years but came back as an eager and valuable member. Michael also belongs to the Schuhplattlergruppe and is employed at Guitar Center. He also showcases his musical talents in the band The Bering Straits. All three of our ‘Royals’ (Michael & Erika through their fathers, Elizabeth through her aunt Michelle Egger) are 2nd generation Jugendgruppe Royalty! - 31 - Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Fall / Winter 2012 Busy Oktoberfest Season for Carpathia Youthgroup By Alyssa Ochss Canterbury Village, Lake Orion: The Jugendgruppe danced at the Canterbury Village Oktoberfest for two days. The first day was cold and windy, but the dancers pushed through, performing a series of dances including Drah’di Rum and the Sprätzer. The second day was much nicer. We had 6 couples and we enjoyed dancing in the small and beautiful ‘village.’ St. Joseph Church, Detroit: It was a bright and sunny day at the historic church, with the bells ringing as we arrived to dance at their annual Oktoberfest. The event was a fantastic way to have fun and enjoy some nice dancing. The Youthgroup did a series of dances, including 2 Schuhplattlers. We had 8 couples that performed for the grateful audience near the tent set up outside the church. St. Irenaeus, Rochester Hills: We were invited to this church to dance at a fund raiser. The Youthgroup put on a performance that, from start to finish, lasted 45 minutes. The crowd loved our performance! We had 5 couples that did a series of dances that included 2 Schuhplattlers. In the end, the crowd showed their appreciation for us by giving us a standing ovation! Macomb Community College, Clinton Township: The Detroit Concert Choir was holding an Oktoberfest at Macomb Community College and invited us to perform. The atmosphere backstage was jittery as we all waited our turn to perform. We did 2 sets of dances with the 6 couples that were at the event. At the end of the show, we walked onto the stage to take a bow in front of the crowd. Kindergrupppe / Children’s Group The children had a busy fall performing at the various festivals. The children performed in Kitchener at the Landestreffen and did an outstanding job. Besides Carpathia's Oktoberfest, they performed at the Huntington Woods Lutheran Church Oktoberfest and Rochester Mills Oktoberfest. They also performed at our Club's Weinlese and Kirchweih. They have worked hard this year perfecting their dances and learning new ones. In October, the group had a Halloween party where they got to dress up for practice, followed by fun, games and food. For Kirchweih, each of the families received a book about the traditions of Kirchweih written by Elizabeth Walter from Chicago. Christine Pesta and I went through the book with the kids so they have a better understanding of what Kirchweih is, where it comes from and all the traditions that go along with the event. It's important that they know about their culture, and the book brings words and illustrations together to explain the story. As we wrap up the year, they are preparing a program for Christmas which will include singing, dancing and instrumentals. We have had a great year and plan on nothing less for 2013. Christine and I are very proud of the group and want to thank all the parents and grandparents for their great support. We couldn't do it without you!!! --Cindy Schleis, Kindergruppe Leiterin - 32 - Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Fall / Winter 2012 Schuhplattler Kulturgruppe The Carpathia Schuhplattler Group had another interesting year. During the winter and spring, we practiced more than we performed. The Kulturgruppe started the year off with a new leader, a new attitude, and some new ideas. Everything didn’t work out as well as we had hoped, but looking back I am happy with the year we had. We practiced and recruited, and both paid off. We were able to increase membership from both former dancers and those new to the scene. Everyone worked together, and we are continuing to move in the right direction - which is a good thing with the Carpathia Club 100-year on the horizon. This past summer, we performed at the Carpathia Club Summerfest/Father’s Day Picnic at the GACC Deutscher Tag at the Austrian Park. With fall came Oktoberfest, the busy season for the Schuhplattler group. We performed at the Carpathia Club Oktoberfest and Weinlesefest. We had other opportunities to dance elsewhere. Due to scheduling conflicts, however, we didn’t perform as much as we normally would have. We have three new members this year: Tim Young, Ashten Grotloh, and Nate Amann. The Carpathia Schuhplattler Group would like to thank all the young ladies who danced with us at our performances this year. We practice at 4 p.m. on Sunday in the practice room at the Carpathia Club. If you would like more information about our group, you can check us out of Facebook or email questions to wcgrotloh@hotmail.com. Thank you for another wonderful year. It has been a pleasure entertaining you. -- W. Carsten Grotloh We made a conscious effort to try to attend not only other Carpathia Untergruppen functions, but those under the G.A.C.C. umbrella, as well. In 2013 we plan to continue supporting all the groups around us. We performed at the Carpathia Youthgroup 50-year Anniversary. This was an excellent time for our group to find more dancers, and we did. With summer came the Summerfest and Father’s Day Picnic, where we performed on Saturday and Sunday. At the Landestreffen in Kitchner, due to an audio malfunction, we had to dance one dance without music. This was an interesting experience for our new members – who continued on and finished the dance adhering to the mantra: the show must go on! The autumn season began with the Carpathia Club Oktoberfest, where we performed on Saturday and on Sunday. We hosted the Weinlesefest and performed at Kirchweih. We thank everyone for their continued support and look forward to the New Year. We practice on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Carpathia Club. See Facebook or email me at kulturgruppe@gmail.com for more information about our group. Herzlichen Glückwunsch an alle Gewinner. --Irene Dietz, Frauengruppe Leiterin OTTILLIE AMANN IRENE DIETZ KATHIE DIETZ MARIE EPPICH ANNA FELLINGER HELEN GASSEL RESI GERBER ANNA GEIER KAETHE GROEDL ROSI GRUSLING ANNI HAMMER MARIA HAMMER ANTONIA HANSMANN KAETHE HEIDE KLARA HOMANN RESI HUTH KATHI KEIL ANNA KEMMER KATHI KIRSCH HELGA KNIEP WILMA KOBERSTEIN ROSA KOEHLMANN JANE KOEHLHOFER LENI KOLLLING ELISABETH KRAUSE ELSA LAMBRECHT MARIA LORENZ ELISABETH MENRATH ELFRIEDE PALOVCIK - 35 - MARGARET PELVAY INGE PFROPPER KATHARINE POSAWATZ NANCY PURTZ KATHARINA SCHAEFER HILDE SCHMID MARIA SCHMIDT RESI SCHNEIDER KATHI SCHUCK KAETHE SCHUH KATHARINA SCHWAGER KARIN SCHWALBE STEFI SCHULTZ ELFRIEDE SOPFE MARIA STEFAN ELISABETH TOEPFNER IRENE UNSLEBER MARY ANN VIRCHOW LONI WOLF ANNA WUNSCH Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Fall / Winter 2012 Erfolgreicher Deutscher Tag 2012 Von Marianne Krenzer Das wunderbare Wetter (und hoffentlich die Einladungen) brachte in diesem Jahr viele Besucher zum 62. Deutschen Tag am Sonntag, den 12. August 2012! 2013 Donauschwaben Heimatkalendar is now available for purchase at the Club while supplies last $15 per Copy Contact Karen Beattie for more information at 586.978.2292 - 38 - Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Fall / Winter 2012 25. Fall / Winter 2012 Danube- Swabian Association of the USA, Inc. Verband der Donauschwaben in den USA. e.V. December 2012 Liebe Landsleute und Freunde, Several months ago many of us met in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada to celebrate our culture with our Canadian brothers and sisters. Among the many highlights for me were the following: 1) The many young people who came from all over the continent to enjoy the weekend together, 2) A successful dance competition sponsored by the Kitchener hosts, 3) Sunday morning worship with Father Peter Zillich, our “Heimatpfarrer”, and the beautiful sermon which mesmerized so many of us, and 4) The ”Gastfreundschaft” of our Canadian hosts! This event showcased the aspects of our heritage that we strive to support financially through our foundation. Our annual gathering is key to preserving the camaraderie of the next generation and beyond and to that end we must continue to provide financial support to all of our youth programs. As we approach the annual holiday season when many of us make our final charitable contribution decisions for 2012 and plan those for 2013, I ask you to contribute today. Let the history books show that the “Einwanderungsgeneration” provided for the future of Donauschwaben both in the USA and throughout the world. Our ancestors and our common history deserve a chance to be memorialized or preserved; to be remembered today and forever for the significant story that it is. We must financially support those individuals and groups t hat work so diligently to perpetuate the best of what we represent as Donauschwaben Americans. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your families. May God bless you for your generosity and keep you healthy as we embark upon our future together. Viel Glück und Gesundheit im Neuen Jahr! Robert F. Filippi, President - 43 - Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Fall / Winter 2012 December 2012 T’is the season when we spend time with loved ones, giving thanks, enjoying memories and traditions as well as participating in many club functions. It is also the time to consider an annual donation to the Danube Swabian Foundation, your Stiftung, which turned 30 years old this year. I am aware that you are often asked to give to charities, everything from bell-ringing on the corner to the American Cancer Society. Equally as important is an opportunity to give to your heritage and your donation is tax deductible - just like giving to the “big guys”. There are 3 ways for you to participate in our annual fund -raising: 1. Our Pledge Your Age campaign was kicked off this year at the April meeting in Chicago. If in the past 30 years you have ever participated in a Deutsche Schule sponsored by your verein, have been in the youth group or traveled with your youth group, or played on a soccer team it is highly likely that you have benefited from a grant made by the Stiftung to your club. The simple gift of giving a donation equal to your age assures that these programs can continue in the future. 2. A second opportunity to participate is by purchasing copies of The Great Swabian Migration, Der Grosse Schwabenzug novel. Elizabeth and Mike Walter along with Pannonia Press have made this a fund-raising opportunity for the Stiftung. The book has received very good reviews and we encourage you to share this with the younger generation. Another consideration is to purchase the book to give to someone, friend, neighbor or schools, who have little knowledge of our heritage. This book is a historical novel important enough for translation into English. 3. Finally, we urge you to purchase a copy of the Anne Morrison Millions Cried and No One Listened DVD series. Many of our members contributed their personal stories to make this DVD possible. $55,000 of the Foundation’s money purchased 1000 DVD sets from Anne. It is hoped that these will all be resold to our members at a cost of $55/set. Please consider purchasing a set for your household and a second to be given to your local school or library to ensure a broader understanding of our hist ory and heritage. Please see your club’s directors if you have further questions or would like to make a purchase or donation. On behalf of the officers and directors of YOUR Danube Swabian Foundation, we would like to wish you and your family Happy Holidays. With best wishes, Eddie Tullius, President - 44 - Volume 18.3 Die Heimat - Carpathia Club, Inc. Fall / Winter 2012 And now, another successful youth oriented event which the Stiftung helped sponsor in 2012! Carpathia Club hosted the 2012 Jugendfreundschaftslager in July. This year it was an international event with attendees from Akron, Cleveland, M ansfield, Cincinnati, Chicago, St Louis and Toronto as well as Detroit. Thirty -eight kids and fifteen chaperones arrived in pouring rain on Thursday evening, but no worries – camp was set up inside the main hall! As everyone settled in and had some pizza, there was time to catch up with friends and meet new people. While we visit many cities, we rarely see much other than the club house or picnic grounds. This time everyone was able to see what ‘Detroit’ is all about. Friday began with beautiful sunshine as we headed to Detroit for a tour of the Parade Company (Detroit still has a large Thanksgiving Day parade). Then down to the Detroit River where we had a picnic lunch on the Riverwalk, a tour of the Renaissance Center with a top floor view of downtown followed by a River Boat Cruise. A trip to Detroit would not be complete without a visit to the famous American Coney Island – a new dining experience for many. And transportation through downtown on our ‘People M over’ – a tram car full of Donauschwaben affectionately called the ‘Schwabenzug’. The evening ended back at the club with fireworks and s’mores around a bon fire. Saturday was cultural day beginning with making of our favorite foods - Kipfel and Goulash. Ladies from our Frauengruppe demonstrated and worked with the Jugend. I don’t know who enjoyed this more - the kids or the ladies! In the afternoon everyone one was divided into 7 teams - each team named after a country where Donauschwaben live today. We talked about our Wappen and its meaning; had a history time line game, Jeopardy and a ‘Wissenslauf’ (knowing the meaning of the word even got extra points!) That sent the groups wandering over the property to find questions and multiple choice answers. I’m happy to say our Jugend is very well informed on history, geography and current events. We also put in a couple hours of Volkstanz and a bit of Tango just for fun! Before dinner everyone was outside for what has become the annual Slip N Slide The delicious dinner Saturday evening was the Goulash and Kipfel – a great job done by all – and that gave them the energy to dance the night away in the parking lot, music by our DJs. Sunday morning everyone packed up and headed home knowing we would all see each other again soon in Kitchener. Everyone is looking forward to participating again at the next Jugendfreundschaftslager in Chicago – get ready Chicago AAS! A big Thank You to all who helped put this great event together and attended to make it a success! We hope to see you in Detroit in 2013 to celebrate Carpathia’s 100 th Anniversary!
