Protection and safety In the field of “protection and safety regulations”, issued as national legislation, the experts from the fields of water and gas compile their own supplementary technical regulations and publish these autonomously. figawa supports the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW e.V.) by making its experts available for the committees and project groups for compiling these regulations. figawa is represented in the national and international standard authorities and in technical associations. Quality and safety figawa places particular emphasis on the certification of products and companies involved in the gas and water industries based on national or international recognised directives. In cooperation with DVGW this is a basis and guarantee that companies certified possess recognised evidence of the quality of their products and services. 78 Companies and Organisations figawa and special fields The association works in three special fields: · gas, water and pipelines These special fields establish expert groups like e.g. · well drilling · water treatment · sewage treatment · hydrometry · fittings and pumps · pipes and pipeline accessories · pipeline builders · pipeline rehabilitation Some of this technical and scientific work is done together with integrated membership associations as e.g. · Association of Pipeline Builders (rbv) · Association of the German Water and Heat Meter Industry (VDDW) DVGW-Membership figawa members and members of those corporate associations mentioned above are members of DVGW with no further fees. This cooperation DVGW-figawa is practised since decades. Information exchange figawa expert groups, figawa´s website, figawa-newsletters and –mailings deliver an efficient network of information exchange and keep all members up-to-date on the associations´work, the progress of regulations and certification. The company is specialised on all aspects of environmental engineering with a focus on water and wastewater infrastructure. Furthermore business management services are rendered for the respective utilities and operators. The consultancy operates independently and offers global consulting and planning services. Company activities • Integrated elaboration of wastewater network master plans • Preparation of feasibility studies and preliminary designs • Elaboration of cost-benefit analyses to ensure financial sustainability • Integrated Water Resource Management procedures • Implementation of environmental impact assessments • Preparation of tender documents and dossiers • Development of decision support system software for sewer rehabilitation strategies • Asset valuation, pricing of water and wastewater charges 90 Companies and Organisations Core Business - Integrated Rehabilitation Strategy The scope of the necessary network rehabilitation measures and the financial pressures which result from these require concrete definition of objectives, what pipe condition at which point in time is to be achieved. The consultancy Dr.-Ing. Pecher und Partner offers solutions for an integrated rehabilitation strategy with short and long-term perspectives for the existing assets. Although, during the pure repair strategy today’s rehabilitation costs are minimised, the net asset value drops rapidly. On the other hand a replacement strategy usually is not financially feasible. With the integral network rehabilitation strategy a middle course is offered in which the most economic process is selected under transparent conditions. Dr.-Ing. Pecher und Partner offers integrated rehabilitation strategies for urban water and sewerage networks. Technical reliability of network systems at high cost efficiency is ensured. On the basis of transparent and well proven workflows, the elaborated rehabilitation measures fulfil fundamental sustainability requirements regarding environmental protection, protection of resources, operating reliability, service quality and profitability. This success has been based on innovative products geared towards benefiting its customers. With its HydroSystemTanks in particular, Hydro-Elektrik GmbH has revolutionized the way in which drinking water is stored. With this new type of system, the water is stored in hermetically sealed stainless steel tanks. Tanks of up to approximately 150 m3 are produced at the company‘s factory. Large-capacity tanks are manufactured directly at the construction site by means of a purpose-developed mobile production process. This enables highquality single tanks with a volume of up to several thousand cubic meters to be manufactured rationally. For water treatment, Hydro-Elektrik GmbH can supply a wide range of solutions to almost any treatment problem in the shape of its compact water treatment plants. These are system-orientated modules for waterrelated problem solutions such as filtration, disinfection and oxidation, ozone bio-filtration, softening etc. Another of the company‘s strengths is customer-orientated project development based on complex system solutions for both local authority and industrial customers. In addition to its headquarters in Ravensburg, the company also has a presence in Gütersloh with its subsidiary Ravensberger Wasserauf bereitungstechnik GmbH (RWT GmbH) and, since 2004, in Scandinavia with its subsidiary Hydro-Elektrik AS. The main points of research are: 1.The cost-efficient regeneration and conservation of the ecological and physico-chemical quality of groundwater and surface waters in anthropogenically polluted regions. 2.The overcoming of water scarcity in climate-sensitive regions through adequate water distribution and storage. 3.Socio-economic analyses for the implementation of measure and environmental law studies. The complexity of the challenges and limiting factors require sustainable and integrative water resources management that arises from specific problematics and regions. The Water Alliance of the Metropolitan Region of Stuttgart (WAMS) – a competence cluster between the UFZ and the water experts of the competency centre „Environmental Science and Technology“ (the Universities of Stuttgart, Tübingen and Hohenheim) – has the aim of improving the mechanistic understanding of matter flows in the water cycle as well as the development of monitoring, modelling and management strategies. Further regional water research partnerships are to be founded, each with a Helmholtz-Institute as a partner following the principle of the pooling of prominent competencies in the area of Water, and the examples of IWAS and WAMS.
