Registration for kindergarten and French Immersion will begin in February throughout the Toronto
Catholic District School Board.
Schools will be receiving posters regarding registration, as well as French Immersion and Extended

Junior W5H 2003-2004
Junior W5H is a general knowledge competition for junior level students. Tournaments are held from
mid-February and culminate with the city championship on Wednesday, March 10, 2004.

KENYA LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE
Summer 2004
Senior secondary school students are invited to apply for this unique program offered through Adventure
Learning Experiences in association with Free the Children.
Adventure Learning Experiences has led previous student trips to India and Africa. Free the Children is an
international network of children helping children and has established youth leaderships centers in the
Developing World.
Credits: Two (2) senior credits in Interdisciplinary Studies
These have been officially approved by TCDSB and will be offered through Continuing Education
Classes: To begin in the spring 2004 and will culminate with a 3 week trip to the Kenya Race and
Leadership Centre in Africa.
Activities: Volunteering at local schools, teaching English, interacting with local native community and
the Maasai people, hands-on learning about development, world issues, leadership,
environmental orientation, protection of local floral and fauna, study of large mammal
migration habits, safari.
Travel Dates: August 1, 2004 until August 20, 2004

THE VICTOR ANGELOSANTE AWARD
NOMINATION FORM
DESCRIPTION OF AWARD
The Victor Angelosante Award is named in honour of Mr. Victor Angelosante, a former Physical and Health Education Program
Coordinator for the Toronto Catholic District School Board, school administrator, teacher, coach and Toronto Catholic Schools
Athletic Association (TCSAA) executive member who died in 1994. Mr. Angelosante recognized early in his career that school
athletics possessed enormous potential to build Christian fellowship in the hearts and minds of young people in our schools. He
further recognized and demonstrated that athletics were but one of many critical avenues educators could pursue to foster in
children a sense of respect and confidence, an understanding of commitment, the significance of teamwork, and the desire to
dedicate energy toward the pursuit of excellence.
The Victor Angelosante Award is presented annually to a TCDSB elementary employee who, through significant involvement
with athletics and the TCSAA, has made an outstanding contribution toward the overall development and education of young
people. The award winner is one who personifies those qualities Victor demonstrated in abundance and one who embodies and
inculcates by example the highest traditions of a Catholic educator and a dedicated sportsperson
SELECTION PROCESS
1.
Principals, teachers or other TCDSB staff may forward the name of a nominee to the TCSAA executive no later than
Monday January 19, 2004. Please submit these forms and a letter of recommendation (typewritten please) to Gino
Ruffo, Sacred Heart School.
2.
The TCSAA executive and Physical Education Department staff will select the annual award winner at a meeting
scheduled for January 28, 2004.

York students brighten season for
needy families

Four struggling families in the city had a merrier Christmas
thanks to the efforts of a group of students at D'Arcy McGee
Catholic School in York.
The school, at 20 Bansley Ave. near Eglinton Avenue West
and Dufferin Street, set up a fundraising drive in conjunction
with Catholic Services to sponsor four needy families during
the Christmas holiday.
Nearly half of the school's student body participated by collecting $2 minimum donations for one week,
beginning Dec. 10.
Other notable donors got in on the act, including the Toronto Raptors, Loblaws and a local hair salon
owner.
In one week, the school managed to raise $825.75.
Two days later, the school presented four families with gifts for each family member, including two gifts
for each child and extra food vouchers from Loblaws and Dominion grocery stores.
"Our school wanted to give back to the community and help families who otherwise wouldn't have a
Christmas, because nobody helped them out," said Robyn Moreno, chair of the Catholic School Advisory
Council.
Moreno, whose five-year-old daughter attends the school, said the fundraising drive helped students learn
the true meaning of Christmas.
"My daughter came home and said to me 'Mommy we have to bring some money in so we can help poor
families who don't have money for Christmas.'
"This is coming from a five-year-old," Moreno said.
Since this year's inaugural drive was so successful, Moreno said the school is looking forward to
continuing the tradition next year.

Vanier students give to community

Students from the leadership class at Jean Vanier
Catholic Secondary School raised $589 and collected
more than 1,000 canned food items and gifts to give
to 20 needy families in the community.
"I have amazing kids in my leadership class," said
Mary Mihalek, a teacher at the school.
"This gives them a chance to have time in the
spotlight."
Mihalek said the 13 Grade 11 students in the
leadership class raised money for the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
Fundraisers they organized included a candy cane-ogram, a bake sale and a dress down day.
A requirement of the Grade 11 leadership course at
the school is to fundraise. The school has collected
funds for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul since
1989.

She said the students have gained a lot of confidence
since they started the course back in September.
"They work together like a family," Mihalek said.

Pepperdine Men's Basketball Signs Oliver Prince To Letter-Of-Intent
Prince To Join Program Next Fall

Head coach Paul Westphal announced the signing of Oliver Prince to a national letter-of-intent and will join the
Pepperdine men's basketball next fall. Prince is a resident of Toronto, Ontario.
Prince is a 6-foot-6, 230-pound forward who attends Jean Vanier High School in Toronto, Ontario, and is considered one
of Canada's best high school players. He averaged 26 points and 10.5 rebounds a game as a junior last year. Prince scored
42 points against Father Redmond in a region playoff game and helped Jean Vanier advance to the quarterfinal round of
the Class 3A Provincial Tournament.
"We are excited to Oliver join our program next fall," Westphal said. "He is a tremendously talented player who I believe
is going to make a positive impact on our program. In addition to his skills on the basketball court, he is a courageous
and inspirational person who has battled adversity."
Prince made a remarkable recovery from a near fatal car accident in 2001. He was in a coma for two weeks, had brain
surgery, and had to re-teach himself to walk.

Local teen is junior citizen nominee
Grade 12 student loves volunteer work with kids

Between helping disabled youth, collecting food for the needy,
organizing symposiums on human rights, working with university
professors, rubbing elbows with future business leaders and taking
part in various school sports, it's hard to believe Alexandra Teresa
Volpatti has any time to be interviewed for this story.
Alexandra Teresa Volpatti
was nominated for the
Ontario Community Newspapers
Association's Ontario
Junior Citizen of the Year Award.
Volpatti, a Keele Street and Eglinton Avenue resident and a Grade
12 student at Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School, will receive
recognition for her extracurricular activities as a nominee for the
Ontario Community Newspapers Association (OCNA) 2003 Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Award.
Volpatti is one of 156 young people in Ontario who have been nominated for the award, which
recognizes outstanding youth across the province. Nominees will receive their certificates from editors of
their local newspapers, including The Guardian.
The 17-year-old boasts an impressive resumé that includes volunteer work with Osgoode Hall's Lawyers
Feed the Hungry program, the Community Association for Riding for the Disabled (CARD) program and
the Junior Chamber International.
Volpatti recently organized a food drive for the North York Harvest Food Bank during Halloween and has
been working with the United Nations, helping organize rallies and symposiums on human rights. She is
also in a mentorship program with a professor at the University of Toronto and has taken courses at
Queen's University as part of her school's enrichment program for the gifted.
Despite all that, Volpatti said she was surprised to receive the OCNA nomination. She said she
volunteers because she truly enjoys it, not because she expects an award.
"I do it because it's something I like to do, so I didn't think anything of it really, to be nominated for an
award. It was really surprising. I was kind of shocked I guess," she said.
Nonetheless, she admitted she feels great about her nomination.
Of all her extracurricular activities, Volpatti said she enjoys working with CARD, helping disabled youth
ride horses every Saturday. As a result of her three-year commitment to CARD, she is considering
becoming a special needs teacher.
"I really love working with the kids there. One of the riders, we e-mail each other every week and we're
really good friends," she said. "I've made a lot of friends at the places I go to. Even if you go with friends,
it's a great thing to do with a bunch of people. I like to get out and meet new people and try to help
people."

The Down Syndrome Association of Toronto for an
Education Workshop and Networking Evening
Our Topic is ‘Planning for the Future’
Presented by
Len Nicholson, Special Educator
As parents and educators we strive to prepare a child with Down syndrome to be independent, productive and
participatory in their community. This requires a plan. It is necessary to determine and set appropriate, measurable
goals that can lead to successful and meaningful involvement. The plan requires programming that allows the child
to immediately and functionally use the skills he/she has learned and then enables the individual to use those skills
to learn more. For the parent and educator, the program becomes a long-term assessment in determining the
individual’s strengths and interests.
This workshop will focus on providing suggestions for programs and strategies (elementary and secondary) that
give children with Down syndrome the best possible opportunity to experience success and demonstrate what they
have learned. Samples of functional academic programs, including literacy and numeracy, as well as vocational/
work skills and independent life skills will be provided and discussed.
In addition to a handout, the workshop will also include practical demonstrations, as well as videos of children in a
variety of programs and settings.

What is Outdoors: The Ultimate Playground?
• A physical activity resource developed by Toronto Public Health in consultation with community agencies,
childcare centres and physical activity experts.
• It includes 50 different outdoor games for boys and girls, ages 6-12
• Fun games designed to promote physical and social skills needed for a lifetime of physical activity
Why was Outdoors: The Ultimate Playground developed?
• The resource was developed to:
• help promote physical activity for children throughout the year
• address the fact that children need to be more active for healthy growth and development
• help school staff fulfill their mandate for physical activity action planning
Outdoors: The Ultimate Playground is useful and easy to use:
• It is directly linked to physical education expectations in the Ontario curriculum
• Games are categorized by color
• Colourful graphics clearly illustrate how the games are played
• Many games have ability adaptation guidelines for children with special needs

INDIA STUDY PROGRAM
Summer 2004
Teachers and adults are invited to apply for this unique program offered through Adventure Learning
Experiences in association with Canadian Jesuits International.
Adventure Learning Experiences has led previous teacher/adult study trips to India, Africa and Eastern
Europe. Canadian Jesuits International has been involved for many years in providing spiritual growth
and educational opportunities to India.
Study Program: Participants will receive instruction prior to departure about such topics as Indian
spirituality, culture, politics, geography and health and safety.
The Faculty of Education at York University will also grant to interested participants
an Additional Qualification credit in Cooperative Education.
Activities:
Service opportunities will be made available for volunteering at various schools,
orphanages, and parishes in India. There will also be opportunities for visiting such historic
sites such as the Taj Mahal.
