As was mentioned last week, the Annual Catholic Appeal is happening for the next few weeks. Cardinal George and his advisory board have come up with a great theme for this year’s appeal, keeping us focused on The Year of St. Paul, “do all for the glory of God.” It is more than a simple phrase. It is a way of life and one that the Gospel implores us to make a reality. When I consider my time I spend behind the altar, I cannot sometimes keep my thoughts straight. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit makes sure that I stay on track so that I don’t sound like an idiot. I could talk about the grieving going on inside of me and my family as that comes to mind; or, the many people who need to speak with me, but I have not been able to get to as yet and are still waiting, also the way my schedule has changed; or, the Illinois political turmoil; or the new President and things he has to deal with; and, the list could go on and on. There is so much to think about and all the more to be thankful for. Because the Holy Spirit keeps me on track, that is the key to showing that we understand what St. Paul’s words mean. I am a firm believer that when we can work with a grateful heart, God is more in focus for our soul. So when we are thankful, it must be that our actions need to be focused on others, which, in turn, makes sure that we are focused on the example Jesus gave us. There are so many people in the current state of the economy that are unemployed or underemployed. There are many families in our own Archdiocese alone who don’t have the basic necessities to be in a safe and healthy environment. There are many children in our Archdiocese who need an education that only the Catholic Schools can offer, with a value system that is based upon the hope for salvation. There are also so many other life issues that we might take for granted in our homes that we simply forget that our call is to go beyond the limits of charity as Jesus taught us to do. Next weekend is when we will hear Francis Cardinal George speak to us about making a commitment to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Please make some time this week to consider all of the gifts God has given to you – gifts that are meant to be shared with others. I will be praying about it too. Peace in Jesus Christ, Fr. Mike p3 PARISH SPONSORS NEEDED The RCIA class needs Parish Sponsors. The theme of the campaign is: “Do all for the glory of God.” (1 Cor. 10:31) The Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is much different than a one time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift, payable over five months. A significant gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. The Annual Catholic Appeal provides a significant portion of the budget of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Most dioceses in the country conduct an appeal, once a year, to help with the costs of providing services and programs to their parishes and people. The Archdiocese of Chicago is no exception. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our Archdiocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they glorify Him by enabling the work of our Archdiocese. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend and the following weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.
