A Touch & Go Mile For Word Power In The Windy
City Pace
By Neil Milbert
The $176,000 Windy City Pace didn’t unfold the way W ord
Power’s driver, Scott Zeron, anticipated.
And during the course of the premier race of Maywood
Park’s year-around meeting Zeron’s emotions ran the gamut.
“I went from having a dream trip to having a nightmare trip
and back to having a dream trip,” Zeron said. “He’s an
amazing horse to leave that fast and then come home that
fast.”
Word Power (photo by Baum Photography)
Leaving from post 6 in Friday night’s race contested by
seven 3-year-old colts and geldings, W ord Power seized an
immediate lead but at the quarter call Apprentice Hanover
took over on the front end.
Then, 1-9 favorite Lucan Hanover asserted himself,
producing fractions of :54 3/5 for the half and 1:23 1/5 for
three-quarters. W ith David Miller at the reins, it seemed the
holder of the world records for 3-year-old geldings on a
half-mile track was on his way to the winner’s circle.
Suddenly W ord Power counterattacked on the inside,
powering past Lucan Hanover to win by 1 length in 1:51 4/5.
“I was lucky that I was able to get in the passing lane,” said
Zeron. “He has that fortitude to come home strong.”
Unraced as a 2-year-old, the colt recorded his seventh
victory in 17 starts for owner Bradley Grant of Milton, Ontario
and trainer Larry Remmen.
There were three other major races on the card.
Striking from just off the pace, Rossini caught pacesetting
Deweycolorintheline in the closing strides and went on to a
½-length triumph in the $110,000 Galt Trot for 3-year-old
colts and geldings, going the distance in 1:55 3/5.
Pine Credit was third, while Lindy’s True Grit, the 3-2
favorite after winning the $235,000 American-National for
3-year-old male trotters six nights earlier at Balmoral Park,
finished sixth.
“Going in I thought he had a very good shot,” said Peter
W renn, who drove Rossini for trainer Jim Raymer. “He
handles the turns well and that’s a bonus (on the half-mile
track).
“I was a little concerned on the backstretch (because) I
thought we might get bottled up. But this horse is very
tough.”
The triumph was Rossini’s 10th in 22 outings this year.
The 3-year-old fillies were in the limelight in the $73,000
Cinderella Pace and late-moving Pertty Music was the
belle of the ball.
“This is home turf and she got the job done,” driver John
De Long said of the Maywood-based daughter of Jereme’s
Jet—My Metallica. “She kicked it in when she needed to.
Indiana-bred champion Always About Katey gained the
early lead and held it for much of the race.
Going around the final turn, Pertty Music asserted herself
and went on to defeat Always About Katey by ½ length in
1:53 2/5 and return $19.40 to win bettors.
It was the fifth trip to the winner’s circle in 20 starts this
year for the filly owned and trained by Tom Harmer.
Archetto Hanover went into the $87,000 Abe Lincoln Pace
for 2-year-old colts and geldings a maiden and came out of
it a photo-finish winner.
Making his move on the outside, Archetto Hanover went
around pacesetting Odds On Rhodonite coming off the
turn for home and held off Total Sin’s late bid on the inside
to reach the winner’s circle for the first time in his 18-race
career.
“He was ready to go,” driver Lewayne Miller said of the
son of Bettor’s Delight—Arts Masterpiece who’d placed
seven times and showed twice in his prior outings for
trainer Erv Miller. “I was very confident in the stretch. I
knew it was a soft bunch other than Odds On Rhodonite
and I knew I had enough horse to get by him.”
Archetto Hanover won in 1:55 2/5.

expected and now it remains to be seen whether it was
enough to instil confidence in this weekend’s buyers.
Organizers were happy with the number of horse people
who gathered on Friday morning to inspect yearlings prior
to Saturday’s opening session. Among those on hand, was
veteran trainer Rene Laarman who was impressed with the
offerings.
“It is a very nice group overall and I am hopeful that we’ll
be able to land a couple,” he offered. “I would say that my
owners aren’t quite as motivated as in past years as there
is still that bit of doubt as to what the future is going to look
like. But, we’re here and looking to buy so that is a good
thing.”
A total of 244 yearlings have been catalogued for this
weekend, which will be down in numbers from the 257 that
went through the sales ring last year when the sale was
held during the weekend of October 13 and 14.
Among the consigners is W inbak Farm of Canada which
will offer its largest ever consignment at a Canadian
auction – a total of 44 head.
“I think it sends a strong message that W inbak is
committed to the Ontario program,” said Farm Manager
Larry Drysdale. “The farm bred about a third of its
broodmare band back to Ontario stallions this past season
so that says a lot. “
Drysdale has been impressed with the interest level in
the W inbak consignment in recent weeks and has a good
feeling about the weekend.
“I definitely came out of Harrisburg more optimistic about

By Greg Blanchard
There is a sense of cautious optimism heading into the
2013 Forest City

being held this

Ontario.
The sale was pushed

things, “ he admitted. “I had several people inquiring about
Forest City when I was there and we’ve had a lot of phone
calls since. This is a good turnout this morning and all the
right people are here, so I’m hopeful.”
It certainly helps that the W inbak group includes nine
offspring of Shadow Play whose first crop dazzled this
season. It was announced this past week that W inbak and
Blue Chip Farms have agreed to keep the pacer in Ontario
for the upcoming season, although his fee has yet to be
determined.
From 109 foals, his progeny earned more than $1.6 million
and were a force all season long in the Ontario Sires Stakes
program.
“His first crop was outstanding, you couldn’t ask for any
more,” reflected Drysdale. “It has been years since I’ve
received so many applications for a sire. It’s definitely
exciting for our operation and we look forward to watching
his next crop hit the track.”
The 2012 sale brought a total of $2,703,300 with an
average of $10,519 per horse.
The 2013 Forest City Yearling Sale begins Saturday at 12
p.m. (E.T.) Live streaming video and up-to-the-minute results
will be available at www.forestcitysale.com .
New Jersey Horse Rescue Helps Standardbreds
and Others In Need
Horse Rescue United, Inc. (HRU) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
New Jersey-based horse rescue that has assisted over 50
horses since March 2010.
HRU was founded by Anouk Busch, a Netherlands native
who has worked as a trainer in the Standardbred racing
industry for many years. W hile HRU helps horses of all
breeds, the rescue specializes in re-training and rehoming
Standardbred horses.
HRU has assisted horses from a variety of situations.
Most of the horses are owner surrenders, and a large
number are former Standardbred racehorses in need of a
new career. Some horses, like a Belgian mare named
Hailey, were surrendered from neglect situations, and others
were saved from auction.
In January 2011, Anouk attended the New Holland Sales
Auction in Pennsylvania to try and save a pair of
Standardbred horses from selling to "kill buyers," who would
send the horses on to slaughter plants. She ended up
leaving with four horses and spent just over $500 for the
group; three Standardbreds, one of which, Jessica, is
currently still seeking a companion home through the rescue,
and a Belgian draft gelding named Tristan.
Tristan was found with a bulging, cancerous eye and was
thin and covered in mud. Anouk outbid a kill buyer to save
him for only $35. After taking him to the New Bolton Center
Hospital in Pennsylvania, it was determined that Tristan's
cancer was terminal as it had already spread to his bones,
and he was given up to six months to live. Incredibly, Tristan
continues to thrive at the rescue almost three years later,
and has since had his cancerous eye removed to keep him
more comfortable.
Just this month, HRU was asked to assist another horse
from New Holland Sales Auction, this time, an older pony
stallion who was accidentally left off of a truck after selling
to a renderer for meat. W ith the help of private sponsors
and donors, HRU stepped up to take the pony, now named
Speedwell, and will be evaluating him after he completes a
30 day quarantine period.
HRU horses currently has several other horses available
to approved homes within a five hour drive of Jackson, NJ.
Adoption fees range from $0 to just $250 with HRU's
contract to protect the horse for life. The horses are kept
up-to-date on veterinary, farrier, and dentist care and are
thoroughly evaluated prior to adoption.
W hile lifelong homes are wanted, HRU acts as a safety
net for each horse should an adopter's situation change,
so they aren't left to potentially wind up in a bad situation.
The rescue requires adopters to provide photos every
three months, which are shared regularly on HRU's
Facebook page, and an annual vet check form also must
be submitted every June.
"HRU prides ourselves on being a small rescue, run
entirely by unpaid volunteers," said Diana Tuorto, HRU
Vice President. "W e need to keep our numbers down to
allow for enough regular donations to safely support our
horses long-term. HRU is contacted daily by owners
desperately trying to find a safe haven for horses that they
can no longer care for, but we can't help them without
adoptions."
Three of the current adoptables are sound, rideable
Standardbred ex-racehorses; Baby Cookie, Cool Cookie
(CC), and Lucille A. Lucille took home earnings of over
$300,000 on the track before going on to be a successful
broodmare. She later found herself with an uncertain
future, headed to work as an Amish horse when HRU
stepped in. All three mares now have extensive trail and
pleasure riding experience. Both Baby and CC recently
enjoyed their first ride at the Jersey shore.
HRU relies 100% on public donations to provide feed
and care for their horses. It currently costs an average of
$2,000 a month to properly care for the group. Donations
to HRU are tax-deductible.

FRANKIE'S DRAGON exits a pretty key race against
Piston Broke who went onto beat much better rivals next
out and he looks like the one the winner’s circle goes
through, even from the outside post. He's already won in

1:48:4 this year and trainer Blais has been first or second in
42 of 94 starts. Former champion SANTANNA BLUE CHIP
makes his first start in almost 5 years when he was last seen
in the 2008 Matron stakes for 3-year-olds. Disappointing
stallion looked good in those preps for Gillis and Jamieson.
Speaking of former classmasters, TW IN B LEGEND
resurfaces. He was very good in these parts a couple years
back. FRIDAYNIGHTFLIGHT looks sharp while seeking his
third in a row for Vrablic and ROETHBLISSBERGER can
pick up a share late.
Race 9, N/W $5,000 L5 Trot
A number of contenders in this race look like they are
begging to bebeat so let's take a flyer with BROW N TOW N
LEFTY. A rare appearance these days by Kerwood here as
this one makes his fourth start back since the April layoff.
Trainer is clicking at over 30% with limited starters. DUKE
OF DONEGAL showed speed two back before breaking
during a mile that went in 1:53:2; not without a chance as
Christoforou is back aboard. LAKEFIELD won a fast mile
here earlier in the year but has been floundering in this
bottom level class of late; at least has a good post to rally
from. EXTRACURRICULAR is yet to do anything since
arriving from Yonkers; tough to take the short price. OPEN
ALL DOORS continues to get slammed with bad posts but is
probably better than those recent lines show; I could make a
case for.
Race 10, N/W $25,000 L5 Pace
PISTON BROKE enters this race into career form and his
stretch kick the last two races has been vicious. Don
Fellows trainee has now won two in a row and hasn't been
worse than second in his last five; looks like the Preferred
isn't too far away. FRANSESCHETTI was very well
rated last out and had no business being caught; gets shot
at redemption right back against the top choice. That was a
rather suspicious try last week by Waples aboard UPFRONT
HOOSIERBOY. As the odds-on favorite, he elected to sit in
fourth along the rail and lost all chance at that point. As fate
would have it, he gets the outside post now. GRANDE
SEELSTER couldn't get involved last week from post
10 but has overachieved of late; maybe the move inside a
few slots will help.
Race 11, N/W 3 or $106K Life Pace
Here's a prediction: ASLAN is going to take considerable
action off his 7/1 programmed line and if nothing else, will
offer more value to close out the Pick 4 sequence than he
will as a win proposition. Amazingly, the last two horses this
O'Sullivan trainee has raced against have both gone onto
win Preferred's next out (Ellis Park, Piston Broke). This is a
serious looking drop. COUGAR HALL jogged in his last pair
in identical 1:51 clockings; the top choice finished ahead of
him three back. CHAMPAGNE PHIL has been firing in
recent starts for the new barn. The post is an obvious killer
but that was a game first over try last week as a big
longshot. MCKINNEY hasn't missed the board in his last four
starts.
