Have to think he’s benefitted from the new synthetic track and will show his usual speed. He’s the only true rabbit in the field and could take these wire-to-wire. Stablemate PEACE ACCORD broke slowly and had the hair ridden off him to challenge the eventual Bay Meadows Baze guided winner throughout and didn’t crack until inside the final 50 yards….he’ll get overbet off that effort and with Bejarano riding today…we think he’ll have trouble repeating that kind of effort. SUPERSTAR JUSTIN broke alertly, drifted back then finished evenly in a fast contest …drops a notch into a restricted claiming event and should offer good value at the windows. CACTUS LIGHTING lost a heartbreaking photo and is in great form…a must use in all your exotic & multi-race wagers. Lots of questions marks in this field…if we get 5-1 or better on Superstar Justin we might get th involved. We love a horse in the 4 , so lets start a Pick 4: 3-7-1 with 2 with 5 with 1. Then hope for some upsets with 3-7-1 with 2-6-7 with 1-4-5 with 1 2nd 2-6-7-8 The new cushion surface works well with trainer Jerry Fanning’s methods as he is have his best meet in years…add in that jockey Alex Solis jumps on CALIFORNIA DEMON in his 2008 debut and you’ve got a very live horse that was able to finished second twice in his final two starts of ’07. FORGIVEANDFORGET is the controlling speed in the race and the one that Solis will have to catch in the lane. MAGGIE LANE ran evenly in a 7 furlong race that had route type early fractions :48 for the half and naturally couldn’t close any ground on the leaders, who had just galloped slowly to the stretch…she could improve with hustling Rosario in the irons. Don’t think you can miss the exacta if you box these three, but you won’t get rich. If we aren’t alive in the Pick 4…start another Pick 3: 2 with 5 with 1 cold pick 3. Also, play 2-6-7 with 1-4-5 with 1 and hope we beat Brother Derek. 3rd 5 BROTHER DEREK outclasses this field…barn has poor record with horses off long layoffs…no value, big risk…we’ll pass! DIXIE MEISTER had no chance over in Dubai after a slow break on that speed favoring oval, but horses returning from Dubai usually take much longer to return to form.. if ever…can’t bet him.. If you can’t pass the race there are two ways to look at it…Derek is best…single him or take a shot that MAST TRACK, who couldn’t hold off Fly Dorcego after a uncontested lead, or NICE BET, who ships up from Brazil and has never raced on a fast track, can pull off the upset….with just a 5-horse field we must see the betting…sometimes the public goes nuts (ie: War Pass at 1/20) and they force you to bet. If we get 10-1 to or better on Nice Bet or Mast Track…it is worth a shot. 4th #1 MIND THE MINISTER 7/2 - #2 KRUGER PARK 5/2 / # 4 BODES GALAXY 6-1 th My first impression after watching MIND THE MINISTER go from blocked with no chance in 6 inside the final 1/16 to winning by almost two lengths and opening that to 5 plus lengths a couple of strides past the wire was that I would bet this horse in any race it entered…I didn’t care if it was the Breeders’ Cup Turf. The race is super impressive time wise, but ‘The Minister is certainly a standout in this field off of that win. Also, note he was flattered by the Incredible Lew’s huge late surge for second against our best bet winner Secret Shuttle on Monday. KRUGER PARK has finished well in both starts down the hill at the meet. BODES GALAXY was quick in early in England and has trained well for his U.S. debut. Here is a gauge on ‘Bodes’ ability, he was beaten by a head by Hamoody as a two-year-old- Hamoody ran well and has finished close to but behind Kruger Park in his last two starts. Wagering: Bet The Minister to win. Exactas 1 with 2-4-6. Trifecta 1 with 2-4 with 2-4-6. 5th 10-2-1-3/8 A bunch of barns dropping trying to win on closing day. WARREN’S R READY finally draws an outside post and with her main competition drawn inside she get the nod. PURE REFINEMENT has been facing much tougher on the turf and will look much improved in this easier spot. KING CITY KITTY exits a fast 5 ½ furlong race and will be in contention for as long as she can last at 6 ½. GROOVY LIGTNING improved in both starts since joining the Velasquez barn, which does a good job developing young fillies. EXCESSIVE FUN rallied from last to second in her debut…Fanning barn going well. There is really only one horse entered that would surprise me if it won. Wide, wide open race. 6th 7/3 – 6 – 11/10 – 2/9 You could easily go 10-deep in this race to make sure you have the winner to start the Pick 6. Just a quick glance at the Pace Pals and you can see there is only 1 rabbit in the field – KILMARTIN HALL – but with 3-for-103 jock Arias in the saddle and fresh claim by an 0-14 trainer…unless she is 15-1 or higher you bet against her. With a rabbit that we can likely catch and beat PRINCESS INTEGRITY, who adds blinkers for a stable that is doing well with its claims, is another huge price that could get Iggy off the snide. We liked My Maloof Rocker against allowance foes on Thursday and she finished mid-pack versus a much tougher field than this…VEGAS RUNNER beat her at Turf Paradise and although morning line maker Jeff Tuffs laid her 3-1 (we’re mad at him for hurting our price) we thought she’d be overlooked by the general public…maybe she’ll drift up in odds. Tyler Baze/Mitchell charge Sting’n In the Rain has been well bet in all six tries and finally won last time out in a decent clocking that puts her right with everyone else in this field, except we believe she’ll be bet to half her morning line odds of 6-1. Mandatory Payout in the Pick 6: Lets spread out early because we have some standouts in the last two races….big ticket 2,3,6,7,9,10,11 with 1,6,7,8,10,11 with 6,8 with 4,7 with 3 with 6 = $168 small ticket 3,6,7,10 with 1,6,7,8 with 6,8 with 4,7 with 3 with 6 = $64 7th 1 (Ford Gallop) – 7/8 – 6 – 10/11 Like the fact that a number of trainers ship over from Hollywood on closing day at Santa Anita rather than wait for race in Inglewood…it’s a good sign that they are very live. Two of those horses are FORD GALLOP & BEWITCHING GEM. Gallop appeared ready roll after a 1:12 4/5 six furlong drill, followed by bullet :47 1/5 from the gate – barn then backed off with 3 slow workouts….love it when Mandella has a real slow final workout…he knows he’s ready and doesn’t need to squeeze the lemon dry in the morning. Bewitching Gem on the other hand just appears to be a very fast filly in the morning. Trainer Bruce Headley is certainly capable of winning with firsters He’s acclimated to training over cushion and is back to winning over 20% of his races. SILK THUNDER tired when stuck on the slow inside second-time out at 4/5 odds….she be right there if she repeats her good debut when second also at 4/5 odds. Probably should move UNUSUAL STRIKE up after her stable/workmate was lightyears best in her debut on Saturday versus Maiden $50,000 claimers. MODIFICATION has wicked early speed, but O’Neill horses don’t always improved second-time out…we’ll try to beat her. Wagering: Certainly can bet both # 1 & 7 to win. 8th 8-3-6-7-4 MT ORIENT has been favored in 5 of his last 6 starts, has run well, but only won once…leading trainer Mike Mitchell tabs bug boy Campos to ride hoping 5lbs off will make a difference between a good effort and win. With one rabbit and only 2 foxes (pace pressers) in the lineup the pace should be moderate to slow, which puts the race squarely in the lap of either SUPER HARMONY, MT ORIENT or even RUN ON THE BORDER. SKELLYTOWN adds blinkers and may show more speed today. LIKE A TIGER, with Bejarano up, may be the most dangerous closer. Believe JUSTINPLACE & SEEKING ANSWERS won’t get enough pace to setup their late runs and will only be able to earn minor awards. Bet # 8 to win. Exactas 6,8 with 3,4,6,7,8 Reverse 3,4,6,7,8 with 6,8. Pick 3 & 4 3,4,6,7,8 with 4,7, with 3 with 6 9th # 7 WE LOVE LA 12-1 - # 4 ALMACITA 5/2 - # 5 HAVENS LAKE 2-1 - # 1 SWEET ROSEMAN 5-1 Making a 100% Betting Line and comparing it to the morning line makes our top selection easy! We rate the chances of impressive last out winner ALMACITA and WE LOVE LA about even…with ‘cita at 5/2 & ‘la 12-1 the choice is obvious…WE LOVE LA! Speed held up like the old days on Saturday, the rabbits were challenged and just kept on going…We Love LA was a couple of lengths clear to the stretch, then got tired late at 6 ½ furlongs in a needed outing…the cut back in distance helps her chances even with 3 other rabbits in the lineup. Lightly raced and freshened HAVENS LAKE, SWEET ROSEMAN and Almacita are hoping the rabbits knock themselves out on the lead…setting up their late runs. Wagering: Bet # 7 to win & place. Exactas 7 with 1,2,4,5. reverse 1,2,4,5 with 7. 10-superfecta 4,7 with 1,2,4,5,7 with 1,2,4,5,7 with all = $14.40 10th 3-4-5 4-year-old SHAMDINAN finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf last year, is the only Grade 1 winner and has twice the earning of any of his rivals. He flopped in his 2008 comeback in Florida, but has trained willingly for this and should prove to be too much horse for this field. PORFIDO has 3 starts at the meet and is in his best for in years…he has a ‘fox’ (stalking) running style similar to Shamdinan…these two may move as a team after the leaders into the final turn. Rabbits VICTORIAN PRINCE & PLUG ME IN will need to step up their game and it doesn’t appear to setup for an easy lead for either, which means they’ll need a career best to beat this field. WARNING ZONE returned for form finishing a nose behind Porfido in the San Luis Rey Handicap, while 6 lengths or more in front of Fitz Flag and ON THE ACORN. ‘Corn’s prior race was much better, but he doesn’t appear to be in sharp enough form to defend his title. BIG BOOSTER is a stablemate of On The Acorn and he looks like the most dangerous (turtle) deep closer in the field. 11th # 6 STORMY TATERS 4-1 -# 3 AMERICA’S STARLET 5-1 - # 2 PRIDE AND CLASS 12-1 /# 5 LITTLE BRENDA 5-1 Lets close out the meet with a win. Leading jockey Bejarano has made a great impression as a strong finisher in her first full meet in So. Cal. and his presence combined with the cut back in distance makes STORMY TATERS a standout in our eyes. Last out she sprinted clear and held that advantage until inside the final 1/16th at six furlongs….and really didn’t stop that bad. AMERICA’S STARLETT was battling for the lead crossing the dirt down the hill versus better…her cushion efforts weren’t as good, but the drop in class will help. PRIDE AND CLASS has fast works for Don Collins, who knows how to win with a first time starter. LITTLE BRENDA took a two month break after finishing second in her debut…she is a stablemate of one of the favorites Stormy Taters and it is always a good sign when a top trainer enters against his own favorite. Mandatory payout in the Super High Five: Lets take a swing 6 with 3 with 2,4,5,8,(13,14) with 2,4,5,8,(13,14) with 1,2,5,6,8,9,10,(13,14) = $60 if the also eligibles 13 & 14 scratch. Big exacta box 6-3 is in order….plus trifecta 6 with 3 with 1,2,5,6,8,9,10 Good luck, we’ll see you at Hollywood Park. Craig Peterson Introduction to handicapping with Pace Pals (Deluxe Edition) by Craig Peterson 5 1 3 7 5 5 4 6 2 8 How to use Pace Pals 1 The Basics, bet the icons Rabbits — if you like your horse to be in the lead. Foxes — if you like your horse to be close to the leaders, ready to pounce at any time. Hounds — run in the pack and make their run later in the race Shopping - getting value for your $$ 3 If you know how to bargain shop you can use the 100% Bet Line to find overlays (horses whose odds are higher than their chance of winning) and play like a pro. The 100% Bet Line represents how many times out of 100 races each horse would win - the lower the odds the more often the horse figures to win (ie. A horse with a 33% chance of winning would have odds of 2-1, a horse with a 10% chance of winning 9-1). Horses whose odds are twice the 100% Bet Line odds are great bets and should be bet win & place if over 10-1 odds. Overlays add exceptional value to exactas, trifectas and superfectas when used with other overlays and the horses with the lowest odds, horses with the best chances of winning, on the 100% Bet Line. You don’t have to know anything about horses, if you know a bargain when you see one… you’ll win! Handicap with Pace Pals Turtles — relax early in the race and make a big late run Pace Pals takes key elements of the each horse’s past performances and puts them in a visual format to help you quickly handicap a race. 4 Check the Rating Graph to see who the fastest horse is and how Dark Horses — are 1st-time starters or foreign horses that haven’t shown what running style they prefer. Generally Rabbits & Foxes win most of the sprints (races at less than a mile). As the races get longer the Hounds & Turtles win more often and excel on the turf (grass). Check the Pace Pals running style chart to see the number of wins for each running style for each race’s distance and surface 2 Selections & Comments Read the analysis of each race and bet the recommended horses. competitive the race is. If all the horses are about equal, there is a good chance for an upset. 5 Check the +/- ratings for Post Position, Jockey & Trainer…you want to see lots of ++ for the horses you like and minus’ for the ones you want to beat. 6 Check the Running Styles Chart see how many Rabbits, Foxes, Turtles & Hounds are in each race and the number of wins for each running style at that distance & surface. If there are lots of horses with the same style then there is likely to be traffic troubles for those horses and it is unlikely that they will be comfortable during the running of the race. If there are too many Rabbits (early speed horses), it may set the race up for a lone Fox, a horse who can relax just off the lead, or for the Hounds or Turtles, (horses that come-from-behind). Conversely, if there is only one Rabbit in the race it is dangerous no matter what the odds or even if the running style history says it is hard to win on the lead.
