Annual Report February 1, 2011 - January 31, 2012 Advocacy Patient Services cover ALL THE bases Research CURE www.alsphiladelphia.org 1 RESEARCH Advocacy Patient Services How Your Gift Helps cover ALL THE bases Our cover model, Karen Delaney Shideleff is 39 and no stranger to ALS. Research Her mother had ALS, as did her grandfather. Now, she has ALS. ALS research is critical to Karen, her family and all those with ALS. ALS research has been accelerating rapidly. Karen recently participated in a groundbreaking clinical trial by ISIS, designed to shut off the mutant gene—SOD1. This gene has plagued Karen’s family for generations. Karen has completed the Phase 1 trial and will now participate in Phase 2, after ISIS conducts more studies. Time is of the essence. ADVOCACY CURE Dear Friends, As we reflect on the past year, we want to express our thanks for your generous support. We have many reasons to be grateful and optimistic– and you have helped us cover all the bases as we look to a future without ALS. Research discoveries are accelerating rapidly, Chapter advocacy efforts have produced positive results and patient services continue to meet the needs of our ALS families. This annual report will show you what we did, but why we did it is more important. Every day, your gift brings us closer to a cure while improving the lives of the 850 ALS families we serve. James V. Pinciotti Executive Director Ellyn C. Phillips President PS – We invite you to follow us on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/alsphiladelphia and on Twitter @alsphiladelphia 2 visit our website www.alsphiladelphia.org, make a donation before the year ends or volunteer. ALS advocates and constituents visited Pennsylvania Congressman, Tom Marino on Capitol Hill at the ALS Association’s Annual Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference in Washington, DC in May. We were proud to have incredible advocates from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, each ready to share their personal stories to explain why funding for ALS research is so critical. PATIENT SERVICES Sr. Joanne Hayes of Reading, PA is assessed by Zachary Simmons, MD, Director of The ALS Association Center at Hershey Medical Center. The Greater Philadelphia Chapter is proud to support two ALS Association-certified interdisciplinary centers for the diagnosis and treatment of ALS. The Centers provide specialized ALS care with patients seeing up to a dozen specialists in a single visit. The Chapter also provides a myriad of care services from in-home care, to patient and family outings, to assistive technology. The Hershey Clinic recently added a new one-half day of visits to accommodate ALS families. CURE The ALS Association has committed more than $58 million to find effective treatments and a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Our global research effort has helped increase the number of scientists working on ALS, advanced new discoveries and treatments, and has shed light on the complex genetic and environmental factors involved in ALS. cover ALL THE bases ALS Research We still do not have a cure for ALS. At least, not yet. In the last year, researchers have located more genes believed to be responsible for the 5-10% of cases called familial ALS, meaning the disease occurs more than once in a family line. This knowledge helps researchers understand what to look for to solve the 90-95% of sporadic cases of ALS as well. Each new gene found is another launching point for greater research that could lead to a cure. Scientists also recently discovered a mutation on Chromosome 9, joining mutated genes SOD1 and TDP-43. Like Karen Delaney, shown on the cover with her dog, many patients have become enrolled in clinical trials, including trials from companies like BiogenIdec, Neuraltus, Neuralstem, and Cytokinetics. Patients enrolled in the BrainStorm clinical trial in Israel are transplanted with stem cells derived from their own bone marrow and treated with the company’s patented technology. There is also much excitement and hope surrounding the use of induced pluripotent stem cells—those derived from a patient’s own skin cells—in trials and research. Dr. Virginia Lee conducts ALS Association supported research at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Ongoing research aims to lengthen the current 3-month additional lifespan that the FDA approved drug Rilutek affords patients. The ALS Registry continues to receive funding to bring together a wealth of information on people with ALS so that scientists have even more starting points to learn about causes and potential treatments. Within the past year, researchers have located potential biomarkers for disease onset and progression, currently an unmet need in ALS clinical studies. These are all tremendous breakthroughs that give us reason to be excited. The Chapter holds yearly research updates. In 2011, 81 people attended and heard the latest breakthroughs from the scientists conducting the studies. Please visit The ALS Association’s Chapter Research website to stay on top of the latest breaking research news. www.alsphiladelphia.org/Research Delaney Strong – is a top fundraiser in The ALS Express Bike Ride for Research held each June. The Road to a Cure 3 cover ALL THE bases Advocacy In Washington, DC and your hometown advocacy efforts continue to cover all the bases locally and nationally. As 2011 came to a close, we learned that Congress approved legislation providing an additional $6.4 million for the ALS Research Program (ALSRP) at the Department of Defense and almost $6 million more for the National ALS Registry. We are also thrilled to report that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs published regulations that would increase from 30% to 100% the minimum disability rating automatically provided to all veterans with ALS who qualify for service connected benefits! Visit our Wall of Honor www.alsphiladelphia.org to read the stories of courage from veterans with ALS and their families. And if you are a veteran or family member, share your story on the Wall and help us continue to make a difference in the fight against ALS. Kathryn Brower “When I look back on the last eight years (since my mom was first diagnosed), it seems almost miraculous how much of a difference we, the ALS Community, have made in such a short time. Going to Advocacy Days every year is something that I have committed to and will continue to attend until a cure for ALS is found. Every year I meet more wonderful family members who are all in the same boat. Every year I meet more amazing people who work tirelessly as caregivers. Every year I meet more of the incredibly giving people who work behind the scenes for The ALS Association.” - Kathryn Brower of Princeton, NJ who lost her mother to ALS in 2005. “… I know the power behind personal experiences. My advocacy for ALS really began when I was 15 years old. My 13 year old sister and I were faced with the harsh realities of a mother who was diagnosed with ALS in February of 1991. The following year, my father was also diagnosed with ALS. I want to honor their memory. I share my story so that others will hopefully not have a story of their own to share in the future. A personal story is a powerful way to lobby and persuade a legislator.” Pennsylvania State Representative Bryan Cutler 4 ALS Awareness Day is proclaimed in Bucks County, PA. In the 20102011 budget, the Pennsylvania General Assembly allocated $325,000 to support important ALS patient services. Unfortunately, this one time funding was eliminated the next year. However, thanks to the tireless efforts of our ALS Advocates, the Pennsylvania legislature passed a $300,000 line item in the 20122013 budget. This renewable funding is a huge win for our patients and families.” We need your voices to help continue our advocacy efforts in Washington, Harrisburg, Trenton and Dover. Email Tony Heyl at Tony@alsphiladelphia.org today to be an advocate. cover ALL THE bases The Lea R. Powell ALS Patient Services Program Help us Hit a Homerun! Your support of the Chapter’s patient services programs helps The ALS Association Cover every aspect of care. The Greater Philadelphia Chapter’s Lea R. Powell ALS Patient Services Program offers the most comprehensive services in the country to people with ALS and their families at no charge regardless of income. “My visits to the Penn Comprehensive Neuroscience Center are so helpful. I am seen by as many as 12 specialists in one place. From a social worker, to a nutritionist, to a neurologist, they really do cover all the bases. I also participate in a clinical study through the Center.” Dave Bryan, Medford, NJ Dave Bryan visits with Leo McCluskey, MD, MBE, Medical Director of the Penn Clinic. ALS Certified Centers The Chapter supports ALS Association certified multidisciplinary centers financially and with dedicated healthcare professionals for the evaluation and treatment of people living with ALS. Clinic professionals establish a definitive diagnosis in patients referred for the disease and then provide care in a supportive environment which enables patients to attain the best possible level of neurological functioning and quality of life. Those with ALS are generally seen at least three times per year. There were 466 patient visits at the ALS Association Certified Center at the Penn Comprehensive Neuroscience Center at Pennsylvania Hospital and 466 patient visits at the ALS Center at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Affiliate ALS Treatment Centers: We also provide support for two additional clinics in our service region. One is located at the Lehigh Valley Hospital where 58 patients were seen and the other at Geisinger Medical Center where 64 patients were seen, both on multiple visits. Sharon Miller receives care at the Hershey ALS Clinic from Linda Baird Jansen, PT, MPS 5 Patient Care Assistance The Lea R. Powell Patient Services Program offers many educational, recreational, patient care, family assistance and outreach programs for ALS families. Home Care • The Howard I. Abrams In-Home Care Program provided weekly care for 118 patients living at home. This translated to nearly 22,400 hours of in-home care! • Respite Care Programs offered 9 ventilator patients 441 hours of care while 45 non-ventilator patients received 1,686 hours. Roseanne Mattiello and her daughter Angelina • The Marjorie Shimer Equipment Loan Program loaned nearly 500 items, including manual and power wheelchairs and scooters hospitals beds, bath benches and other durable medical equipment not covered by insurance. “We live in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania… if you look at a map, you may miss it! It’s way up on the northern border of Pennsylvania, near Honesdale, below Binghamton, NY. So, it’s not always easy to find good help so far from a big city. But, the Chapter found Jen and she does everything from feeding, bathing and dressing my mom…to the laundry and household chores.” Nicole Mattiello The Scott A. Mackler, MD, PhD Assistive Technology Program helps patients maintain independence and communicate with family and friends through the i-Pad and other devices. The ALS Association’s program provides trained technologists who assist people with ALS with the daunting task of identifying and applying assistive devices. These devices may include communication technology, telecommunications, computer access, electronic aids to assist with daily living, and assistance with seating and mobility issues. Specialized communication evaluations were provided to patients throughout the region on more than 350 occasions. Alisa Brownlee, ATP, the Clinical Manager of the Chapter’s Assistive Technology Services, saw 206 patients alone last year and shipped devices to 56 patients. An annual run/walk in Dr. Mackler’s name raises over $50,000 each year for this program. Dr. Mackler, of Newark, DE, at the Phillies Phestival cover ALL THE bases 6 Jim Koller of Lafayette Hill, PA uses his i-Pad to keep notes during his clinic visit. Jennifer Klapper, RN, CNS-BC, Mental Health Nurse at the Penn Clinic demonstrates the usefulness of a power wheelchair at Caregivers’ Skills Day (p. 8). Susan Schwartz, ACSW, LSW (second from right) and Gail Houseman, RN, CNS-BC (rear) presented an in-service program to nursing home staff at an area nursing facility. Education The Cox Family Fund for Accessibility In-Service Programs A total of 94 ramps, stair glides and emergency call devices were provided to ALS families. A grand slam for the Chapter as we continue to provide In-Service Programs to assist healthcare workers caring for ALS patients in hospitals, nursing homes and hospices. 31 such programs were held throughout PA, NJ and DE. Transportation Program The Chapter’s wheelchair-accessible vans transported 154 patients and their caregivers to medical appointment and recreational visits. ” Van drivers John and Thomas are like family – they care deeply and get me where I need to go – in this case, the ALS Association Holiday Party.” Kevin Glenn The Chapter also offers a comprehensive ALS Patient and Caregiver Resource Manual free of charge to ALS families. Additional copies, as well as copies for medical professionals, are available at our cost. Resources and Seminars – helped patients and their caregivers better understand and cope with the diagnosis of ALS. Four Managing ALS teleconferences were held. Additionally four Newly Diagnosed programs, 13 Monthly Resource Groups throughout the region and a Bereavement Group provided an opportunity to address questions and concerns and share experiences with others. The Chapter also supports a Women’s Voices website, the Pathways newsletter and partners with Caring Bridge for ALS families. Pathways is sent to all ALS patients free of charge, four times each year. This newsletter, written expressly for people living with ALS includes valuable information on upcoming programs, teleconferences and medical issues. 7 Patient Care Recreation It’s so important for families to have fun and relaxation. Three activities were very well-attended: Longwood Gardens Trip – 83 visitors; – 72 patients and families visited Morey’s Piers in Wildwood, NJ; and the Annual Holiday Party drew a record 270 guests who loved every minute including caricatures, balloon art, henna tattooing, photos, food, gifts and games. Anthony Vennera, owner of Hot Hot Hot Entertainment at the Chapter’s patient and family holiday party in December. Greg Telthorster and his family attended a Phillies game – their reward for finishing among the top fundraising teams in the annual ALS Express Bike Ride for Research. Specialty Programs cover ALL THE bases “It’s a labor of love for our crew at Hot Hot Hot Entertainment. Every smile we can bring to a child’s face…every patient dancing in a wheelchair brings such joy to us.” Caregivers Skills This event was proudly presented by The ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter and The ALS Hope Foundation. Networking groups with 47 caregivers in attendance allowed them to share their experiences. The Chapter’s Respiratory Interventions for Individuals with ALS Conference proved to be most successful with attendance reaching 60 people at Maggiano’s Restaurant in King of Prussia, PA. Care Connection The Chapter, under the direction of nurse Gail Houseman, also offers an easy way for ALS families to help through the Care Connection, a network of volunteers from the community who provide help - making meals; maintaining their home or everyday errands. The Care Connection uses a website – lotsahelpinghands.com – that allows volunteers to sign in and see the community calendar where tasks have been posted by a volunteer coordinator. It also offers training and information about what approaches tend to be most effective. Sara M. Feldman, MA, PT, ATP demonstrates how to use a Hoyer lift at Caregivers Skills Day last November. Visiting Volunteers Kelly Slipakoff was the Chapter’s first Volunteer of the Month in January 2011. “I have been a visiting volunteer to eight patients. My role was quite different with each one of them, ranging from visiting once or twice a week to phone calls and corresponding with family members.” Kelly Slipakoff 8 “Kelly has become a part of each family she visits. She is a friend, a listener, and an advocate not only for the patient, but also for their caregiver and family members.” Staff Nurse Gail Houseman, Visiting Volunteer Coordinator Kelly Slipakoff visits with ALS patient Judith Murray The Legacy Society The individuals who are members of the Legacy Society Cover All the Bases by taking the special step to include The ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter in their estate plans through charitable bequests, trusts, insurance, or other forms of deferred giving. Whatever the reason, the ultimate goal is to help create a world without ALS. This past year, Community of Hope raised over $19,300 and since its inception in 2008 gifts have totaled nearly $90,000. You, too, can make a significant impact in the fight against Lou Gehrig’s Disease and inspire others by creating an online Fund. Whether it’s telling a personal story or honoring the memory of a loved one, your Fund will support The Chapter’s crucial patient services program, leading-edge ALS research and advocacy efforts. For more information, contact Donna Cleary at donna@ alsphiladelphia.org, or 215-664-4133.
