Oh, all those wired men on
their log woodden legs.
Each neighborhood in
Aalborg has its favorite
Carnival street band(s).
There are more than 300
of them in Aalborg nowadays and each year this
number increases.
Each band has its place
or street for its parade and
the big ones usually close
the streets to the traffic.
They usually start in
January and last till the
end of Carnival. Since the
beginning of the year, you
can often see the groups.
Samba is perfect for sun.
Sunshine dance
Samba the pefect dance
for sunshine Sunny skies
and high spirits graced
this year’s carnival parade, which started from
Amagertorv in central
and culminated in Fælledparken during Pentecost
weekend.
Bright feathers, gleaming sequins and glistening
bodies writhed and contorted their way through
the streets, much to spectators’ delight.
In addition to hip bopping
samba
rhythms
and other world music
concerts.
Samba Schools
The samba schools entertain the community
through samba nights and
create a pageant for the
Samba Parade.
They have to pick
themes, write music and
lyrics, make costumes and
floats and practice all year
around to succeed in the
Parade.
The samba schools are
vital elements of Aalborg
Carnival. They are social clubs representing a
particular neighborhood,
usualy a working class
community of the slums
(favelas). They have a
samba hall.

Aalborg has long
been regarded as the
Carnival Capital of
Scandinavia
Although Carnival is celebrated in towns and villages
throughout the world in mainly Catholic countries, Aalborg has long been regard-
ed as the Carnival Capital of
Scandinavia.
The Aalborg Carnaval is
not only the biggest Carnival in Scandinavia, it as also a
benchmark against which every other carnival in Europe is
compared and one of the most
interesting artistic events on
the Globe.
Almost everyone has heard
of the Aalborg Carnaval. Foreign visitors to it alone number around 50,000 every year.
Aalborg Carnival is a wild 4
day celebration, 40 days before
Easter. This year with Carl
Mar Møller as it’s king. It officially starts on Saturday and
finishes on Fat Tuesday with
the beginning of Lent on Ash
Wednesday after which one is
supposed to abstain from all
bodily pleasures.
Carnival with all its excesses, celebrated as a profane
event, can be considered an
act of farewell to the pleasures
of the flesh. It usually happens
in February, the hottest month
in the Southern Hemisphere,
when the Aalborg summer is
at its peak.
There are carnival celebrations in virtually every corner
of Brazil, the best-known ones
taking place in Recife together with the neighboring Olinda (in the North of Brazil) and
Salvador. But borg de Janeiro.

Not only adults are having fun joining a carnival parade. More than 6,000 children

Aalborg Carnival is the re-
sult of months of preparation.
People eagerly anticipate the
start of each year’s Aalborg
Carnival.
It begins with the crowning
of the King (King Momo), who
is presented with a giant silver
and gold key by the city’s mayor, as mentioned before this
year it is Carl Mar Møller, well
known for his strong opinion
about man/women issues. Aalborg Carnival is a wild 4 day

This year with Carl Mar
Møller. One of the greatest elements of the Aalborg Carnaval is that it not only provides entertainment for many
people around the world but
it also gives a chance to learn
about the true culture of Brazil. Carnival is very important
to the Danes, it sums up their
culture.
It is a euphoric event where
people dance, sing, party and
have tons of fun. There are
many parties that take place
before, during and after Carnival all night and all day. It allows someone’s true heart to
come out and have as much
fun as possible.

HISTORY
2000 - New Horizons
Many futuristic dresses and
songs were seen.
2001 - Hope & Belief
A rainy year, with lots of priest
& nuns.
2002 - Mirrors
Was all about “mirroring” a
lot of nice inventions.
2003 - Trens & Tradition
It was a warm canival with
“Trends & Tradition”
2004 - Atlantis
Explains itself, very wet!
2005 - HC Andersen
The famous poet’s stories
were in focus.
2006 - Exotic & Erotic
Maybe the most sensational
For ten years ago, the
tradition with drinking alcohol during carnival was
challenged by localm politicians. Fights during the
1999 parade were the direct reason for this request. Nevertheless politicians nevers succeeded.

Brazilian dancers in Kilde Parken
Just like last year, a big delegation from Rio de Janeiro
are participating in the Aalborg Carnival. It’s not easy to
join a parade in almost nothing to wear and temperatures
well below 20 degrees - and
still smile. But participating
is more than just dancing
and smiling. It’s also a way to
show other people around the
world how a samba should be
danced. In fact this text is just
bullocks, but now it seems like
I’m going somewhere. All Brazilian dancers are dressed like
the were dancing in Rio, where
temperatures easily become
over 35 degrees. It was an impressive performance when
they were dancing in Kilde
Parken, Aalborgs biggest park.

Childrens place
Under an appropriately
bright and springy sky, between 2,000 and 3,000 children
dragged parents along to the
City Hall Square on Saturday
to join in some Fastelavn fun,
laid on by Aalborg’s Carnival
Association. Fastelavn is a traditional celebration marking
the beginning of Lent, which is
enjoyed as an children event.

Samba Dance
Almost all of the music played during Aalborg
Carnival is samba. It is a
uniquely Brazilian music originating from Aalborg, a dance form that
was invented by the poor
Afro-Danes.
Karneval 2009: The gangmembers from the Aalborg Gang Association became a part of the Carnival day and night.

A show of force was made
by gang members during Aalborg’s annual Carnival celebration on Saturday, but no violence was reported
Rival gangs marched in procession at Aalborg’s annual Carnival celebration this
weekend while police kept a
close eye on the situation.
Around 60 members from
Hell’s Angels and their offshoot group AK81, as well as
Banditos and vaAalborgus
other immigrant gangs were
at the festival, many travelling
from Copenhagen with the intention of making a show of
power to each other, according
to police sources.
Kim Kliver, head of the National Police investigation centre said that the situation between Banditos and Hell’s
Angels is at its most strained
since the Nordic gang war
of 1997, meaning police were
kept on alert for clashes between the rival gangs late into
the night, although no violence
ever materialised.
North Jutland police are still
concerned that a violent conflict is on the horizon and are
watching the situation’s developments closely.
Hell’s Angels spokesmen
have denied that they or AK81
were represented at the Carnival, saying that any members in attendance were acting
on their own initiative. Banditos gave TV2 News the same
message.
Up to 35 gang members were
searched by police during the
event, but no illegal weap-
