Dear Friends,
Please let me wish you all the best for a happy
and healthy holiday season.
You have been such great
friends of the Children’s Burn
Foundation and we are very
grateful to you all.
There is still a very critical
and important need for the
programs and services we
provide. Sadly, way too many
children are still the victims
of preventable burn injuries.
We are dedicated to helping reduce those numbers
every way we can. This past year, we took the burn
prevention and education program we facilitate here in
the United States, to Zambia. In addition to the 50,000
children we see here in the states, more than 2,000
children had the opportunity to interactively learn what
to do in a fire emergency.
Once a burn injury does occur for a child. . . we are
here to help. Locally, nationally and internationally, the
Children’s Burn Foundation is THE resource for families
in their darkest days. We provide funding for surgery,
family emergency help and assist in making the journey
back to health as easy as possible for the burned child
and their family.
What We Do
The Children’s Burn Foundation (CBF) is a nonprofit
organization dedicated to providing support services
for child burn survivors, ages 0-18 and their families,
as well as burn prevention and fire safety education to
tens of thousands of children and caregivers in Southern
California, nationally, and internationally.
I have had the experience of seeing a child newly
burned and then watching the progress as they heal
and get back to their most important job. . . being a
kid! The Children’s Burn Foundation gives New Hope
to these special children.
Our Mission
TO PREVENT the pain and trauma of burn injuries to
children, and TO HEAL and give children who have
suffered severe burns the opportunity to reach their full
potential, physically, psychologically and socially.
Thank you for making that journey with all of us at
the Children’s Burn Foundation and for your support,
loyalty and faith in our mission.
Happy Holidays,
What Sets Us Apart
The Children’s Burn Foundation is concerned with the
Full Recovery of a child burn survivor, addressing not only
their physical needs, but their psychological, emotional,
and social recovery as well.

The 18th Annual Giving New Hope
Benefit honors Susan H. Mallory
The Children’s Burn Foundation is honored to be presenting its
2013 Giving New Hope Award to Susan H. Mallory.
Each year we honor extraordinary individuals who have actively made it
part of their lives to step up and help children. This year is no exception. It
is with great pleasure that we present our annual Giving New Hope Award
to Susan H. Mallory, Global Banking Practice Executive, The Northern
Trust Company. Susan continues to have a distinguished career in wealth
management and banking, working with families and individuals,
specifically entrepreneurs to build, retain and transfer wealth. Susan’s
contributions to our community include serving as a member of the Board
of Trustees of both Occidental College and the University of San Diego, and on the boards of Children’s Hospital
Los Angeles and the Geffen Playhouse. We are honored that Susan has chosen the Children’s Burn Foundation
as one of the organizations she actively supports and for which she advocates.
Joining Susan this year, as our dinner chairs, are basketball icon Jerry West and noted philanthropist and
community leader Marion Anderson.
We hope you will join us in celebrating Susan H. Mallory and the vital work of the Children’s Burn Foundation.

Where Children’s Burn Foundation Has Been
Locally with Camp...
This year’s Camps included three exciting days
starting in June when the kids became rock stars
and played musical instruments at the Grammy
Museum at L.A. Live, and then bowled like
champions at Lucky Strikes Bowling Alley.
In July, the kids took part in a parade around
the field and saw the players up close before
the Chivas USA soccer game at the Home Depot
Stadium.
The children saw no limits when in August
they participated in the Camp Gung-Ho version
of Olympic games at Dr. Richard and Elizabeth
Grossman’s fabulous ranch, Brookfield Farms!
The campers enjoyed swimming, fishing,
feeding horses, special ice cream treats, and
they received much-needed school supplies,
courtesy of The Council of the Children’s Burn
Foundation.
This year, at our Family Camp over Memorial
Day weekend, children participated in creating
a special show using puppets and a stage
donated by Wolters Kluwer Company that were
handmade by their employees. The puppets
included whimsical characters who taught the
audience about responses to bullying, staring
and expressing what it feels like to be a burn
survivor or a sibling of one.
Internationally with Education...
The Children’s Burn Foundation has
helped children from all of these
countries
The Children’s Burn Foundation is partnering once again
with the American Burn Association, bringing life-saving
skills and burn-care knowledge to a remote hospital in
Zambia that serves critically burned children. We send
teams of burn surgeons, nurses, physical therapists and
dieticians.
This year, in addition to the medical team, the Children’s
Burn Foundation sent 6 firefighters and a health educator
to build on last year’s efforts to provide burn prevention
education in 7 schools for more than 2,000 students! The fire safety understanding
and knowledge continues to increase in these schools dramatically, as was revealed
by increased assessment scores, which will undoubtedly translate to a reduced
number of children with severe burns in the future!

Assiya’s Story
[HOPE IS HEALING]
It was a terrible accident! Assiya, the second youngest child of five and
the only girl in the family, was severely burned over 70% of her body
when her jacket caught fire. She was only four years old. For her burns,
Assiya received care in her hometown where doctors thought she would
not make it. Miraculously, she survived.
However, as Assiya healed, the scar tissue that formed made her joints
immobile. Sadly, doctors in Kazakhstan did not have
the proper equipment to care for her burns. Assiya
began to develop huge areas of additional scarring
from the treatment.
When the Children’s Burn Foundation learned
of Assiya’s struggles, we rushed to get Assiya
to Los Angeles for burn care surgeries by
Dr. Peter Grossman. Assiya recently arrived in Los Angeles with
her mother and older brother, and has had her first surgery at the
Grossman Burn Center at West Hills Hospital. With the use of artificial
skin, a series of surgeries will help Assiya gain freedom to move again.
The Children’s Burn Foundation is proud to be facilitating this brave
little girl’s journey toward mobility.
We Rolled Out the Red Carpet with Honor for Our Teens
The Young Adult Burn Survivors and Supporters, YABSS,
had a landmark year. With Mark Dennis, M.S., as their new
leader, the teens embarked on a journey of transitions.
In March, the teens were treated to a glamorous gala
event in honor of Terri
Calversbert, a teen burn
survivor from England,
who was badly burned
over 90% of her body
before she was two years
old. Terri transitioned
from childhood to being
a teen with courage and
determination. The gala was taped for an inspirational
documentary about Terri’s life. Our teens walked the red
carpet and presented Terri with a special “Academy”
award for her strength and bravery.
This year, several teens transitioned from being
campers to becoming Camp Gung-Ho Junior
Counselors, where they were able to role model for
the younger kids and help them feel comfortable
at camp.
Also, several members graduated high school and
graduated from the teen program! The teens celebrated
each other’s accomplishments and successes
throughout the year with a group Graduation Party!

2012 CBF HIGHLIGHTS: This Year was Amazing, Thanks to You!
Children’s Burn Foundation sponsored the World Burn Congress program “U Belong” – providing a
venue for child burn survivors to get together to heal and help each other.
More than 50,000 children learned lifesaving fire safety and burn
prevention information through CBF’s local L.A. Troupe Safety Smart
program.
Orphaned and burned Cami Ai Liu gained a loving family and access to
state-of-the-art reconstructive surgery.
CBF’s Child & Family Support Groups
blossomed! Since their inception in July
2011, we have received overwhelmingly positive
feedback from participating parents and young burn
survivors. We added a group just for siblings of child
burn survivors.
We launched a new website that is cutting
costs, keeping our donors up-to-date, and making it
easier than ever for child burn survivors to find help.
www.childburn.org
CBF brought 6 burned children from Pakistan for
treatment, in partnership with another caring
organization, House of Charity.
In partnership with the American Burn
Association, CBF enabled two trips to
Zambia to provide medical training to health
care professionals treating burn survivors.
Tyler’s mom, Vicki, received nursing assistance
training to help her son and sweet notes of support for Mother’s Day from our kind
and generous donors.
CBF’s Careful, That’s Hot! program provided burn safety education to more
than 1,500 child care providers.
CBF put on a heartwarming Holiday Party for 515 child burn survivors and
family members.
We assisted twice as many burn survivors with facemasks and pressure garments as last year!

Dear Friends,
What a wonderful opportunity I have to spend my days
being encouraged and inspired by the bravery and resilience
of the children we work with.
As so many of you know, we
are there to provide support and
assistance when a child is in need of
burn surgery. After hours of surgery
you would not expect to see a smile
on the face of a child burn survivor,
but that is exactly what I see.

CALL US
Raven was lying in bed smiling; he
gave me a thumbs-up and a high five!! His head was
bandaged from a graft of skin taken that was used to
help his contracted arm gain mobility. His arm was in a
cast from shoulder to hand, but he was a happy boy! It
was unbelievably heartwarming.
Cami had hand surgery on a Wednesday and attended
Camp Gung-Ho on Thursday. She even pushed the
bowling ball off the
ramp and down the lane.
Amazing!
Shai visits our office after each
of her surgeries and runs in
with hugs for all of us.
One might think that working with child burn survivors
is very sad and difficult emotionally, and it is some days.
However, so many more days are filled with smiles,
laughter, hugs and healing.
How lucky am I to have these brave and amazing
children in my life and to have all of you by my side
making miracles happen for them.
Have a wonderful holiday! We will be celebrating with a
big holiday bash for the kids!!
