Our new, inspiring facility provides patient- and family-centered care for
mothers and children in more than 50 pediatric and maternal services.
As Minnesota’s first green children’s hospital, the facility features an
environmentally sensitive design, eco-friendly materials and green spaces,
including a healing garden. The 96-bed hospital has a dedicated pediatric
emergency department with 10 treatment rooms, two trauma bays, six stateof-the-art operating suites, and a children’s observation and sedation unit.
Designed for Safety
In our new facility, a team of hospital experts, architects and safety
design professionals worked to create a safer, more effective and efficient
health-care environment. Safety features in the facility include decentralized
team stations, which allow care providers to spend less time outside patient
rooms and eliminate distances and distractions that can undermine safety.
Same-handed rooms encourage repetition and standardization that reduce
the chance for errors.
Designed for Experience
A guiding principle for the hospital has been separation of the “on-stage”
public areas used by patients and families and the “off-stage” areas staff
need to be provide seamless care. On each patient floor, a central corridor
with dedicated service elevators are used to bring all supplies, laundry,
medications and equipments to units, greatly reducing noise and clutter in
the main corridors.
Designed for Teamwork and Collaboration
Patient and family involvement in the treatment of children is central to the
hospital’s approach to care. That’s why the children’s hospital created space
and design features that support parents being at the hospital as much as
possible. Large, private patient rooms, family lounges, and laundry facilities
all allow families to have a more comfortable experience.
Designed for Research and Collaboration
University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital partners with one of the
country’s largest research universities — the University of Minnesota and its
Department of Pediatrics. Our treatments, preventions, devices and protocols
are adopted by community hospitals and physicians throughout the United
States and around the world. As a result, we often treat the children no one
else can.
Our physician researchers are leaders in academic medicine, developing the
next generation of best treatments for children and bringing those medical
breakthroughs to our patients. We provide award-winning, internationally
recognized care in areas that include stem-cell therapies, kidney disorders,
cancer, transplantation, cystic fibrosis and more.

Our specialists perform testing to determine patients’ allergies, and devise treatment
plans accordingly. Our specialists also evaluate patients for hives, and adverse
food and drug reactions, among other conditions that might result from asthma
and allergies.
At University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital, we have a pulmonary
laboratory that offers various state-of-the-art tests to help diagnose pulmonary
illnesses. For patients who already have a confirmed pulmonary-disease diagnosis,
specialists at the pulmonary laboratory can determine the severity of a condition.
Because of the hospital’s onsite laboratory, patients and their families, and their
primary-care physicians, can often receive same-day test results.

who have CF. the philosophy of the Minnesota CF Center is to diagnose and
start appropriate treatment at the earliest age possible to prevent or attenuate
the rate of disease progression.
Our CF team’s clinical research applied to patient care, has led to our
patients — ages 6 to 17 years old — having the best lung function in
the nation. As part of the the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s therapeutics
development Network, our patients are among the first to participate
in the development of better treatments for this disease. In addition, our
Center was the first program in Minnesota to offer infant pulmonaryfunction testing, and nasal potential-difference testing.
Because CF often affects several body organs and functions — and related
complications can vary by patient age — our CF experts, specialists,
geneticists and counselors work together as a team. Our team approach,
which includes patients and their families in care and treatment planning,
ensures that the most comprehensive care is provided to each patient.

At University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital, we’ve helped
thousands of families understand their child’s developmental and/or behavioral
issues. We have experts who can diagnose, monitor and treat complex
developmental, behavioral, learning, and genetic disorders. Whatever a child’s
particular challenges, our team will design an effective management plan — with the
input of the patient’s family — that can ensure the best possible future for the child.
the expert developmental and behavioral pediatricians are knowledgeable
about the continuum of services and support. We evaluate children’s
strengths and challenges, and work to develop a care plan that meets a
child’s ongoing developmental, behavioral and learning successes.

diabetes and endocrine disorders. Patients have access to leading-edge
research studies and investigational therapies for diabetes, growth problems,
delayed or early puberty, disorders of sexual development, calcium and
bone disorders, thyroid and adrenal disease, and other endocrine problems.
Our clinical investigators are closely involved in research relating to special
populations with endocrine disorders such as international adoptees, children
who have had cancer treatment, children with chronic pancreatitis, and children
with Fanconi anemia, fetal alcohol syndrome or storage diseases.
Pediatric endocrinologists are involved in providing care for children with endocrine
disorders in conjunction with multispecialty clinics for children with brain tumors or
neurofibromatosis.
We are a leading clinical site for trialNet, an international network of clinicians who
are exploring ways to prevent, delay and reverse the progression of type 1
diabetes; only 19 clinical centers in the world are part of this network. At University
of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital, physicians work with diabetes nurse
educators, dieticians and pyschologists to teach patients and their families about
diabetes, insulin-management strategies and how to live well with diabetes.

CO M M U N I C At I O N
At University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital, we take tremendous
pride in collaborating with our referring providers on patient care. We believe
that communication is essential to the success of our partner relationships and
have developed tactics to give you information that is pertinent to your patients
and practice.
Provider Passport
We offer Provider Passport, a quarterly print and
online communications tool that offers information
— many of it directly from our physicians —
about medical conditions that we treat as well as
information on when your patients might
need to see one of our specialists; we offer more
than 50 pediatric specialties. As well, Provider
Passport gives details about new providers,
physician-education opportunities, and researchrelated topics.
Smartphone
Application
Our Web-based smartphone
application gives providers
quick and easy access to
Provider Passport, our online
communication and resource
tool, as well as direct access to
the Amplatz directory of Services
— filled with information about
our more than 50 pediatric
specialties. the application also
