THE HISTORY CENTRE
This immense bunker was built in 19431944 by the Todt Organisation to store,
prepare and launch Hitler’s secret rocket,
the V2, aiming to hit the City of London.
From Nazi folly to the hidden face of the
conquest of space, not forgetting the
darkest hours of the Nazi Occupation of
France, La Coupole offers a blast back
to the past to cast a fresh look on the
present.
ACCESS TO THE HISTORY CENTRE
An automatic lift
takes you into the dome.
MYSTERIOUS ORIGINS
OF THE CONQUEST OF SPACE
Developed in Peenemünde, on the Baltic
coast, by Wernher von Braun, aged only
27 in 1939, the V2 was a genuine weapon
of destruction, in fact the forerunner of
all rockets…

cineac Circuit
“Living under Nazi Occupation”
This circuit retraces the major events of the Nazi Occupation
of Northern France: the invasion, exodus, daily life, the
Resistance, collaboration and Liberation.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CIRCUIT:
A car used by the French Resistance, the reconstitution of a shop-front,
a replica of the“execution wall” in the Citadel in Lille, a Messerschmitt
propeller, an MG34 machine gun, a letter written by a 21-year-old teacher,
Félicien Joly, three hours before being shot by the Germans, etc.
You start by entering a series of vast underground
galleries, to the sound of bombardment and
building site noises echoing around, then a lift
takes you to the museum, 42 metres higher up.
When you arrive under the concrete dome, you
find two projection rooms, each showing an
introductory film to the circuits (20 minutes for
each film).
rex Circuit
“Secret weapons”
The aim: to destroy London. Enter
Peenemünde’s secret laboratories and
find out about the secret weapons
programme and how the Nazis turned
the peaceful dream of conquering
outer space into a nightmare. At the
end of the circuit, track the major
events in the space race, from the V2 to
the first man on the Moon.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CIRCUIT:
A genuine V2 missile and a 3D film about
its engine; looking at various themes; a
reproduction of “Little Boy”, the atomic bomb
which was dropped on Hiroshima, mock-ups of
rockets on a scale of 1/20e, etc.
4
You gain access to the visitor’s
itinerary by way of the Ida gallery, a
railway tunnel used in 1944 by trains
laden with V2s. Some of the crosssections perpendicular to the main
tunnel can still be seen. In one of
these, the exhibition serves as an
introduction to the site.

From 2003 to 2006, La Coupole
conducted a vast survey to
determine how many men and
women fell victim to the repression
implemented by German troops and
police force, and the Vichy regime’s
armed forces, between 1940 and
1945. The names of nearly 8,000 men
and women (and even children in
the case of Jews and gypsies) scroll
across a screen.
Adults: €8.50 per person

Our opening times
THE “LOOS TRAIN MEMORIAL”
On 1st September 1944, a matter of
hours before the North of France was
liberated by British, US, Canadian
and Polish troops, 871 men, aged 16
to 71, were ushered out of Loos prison
(near Lille), by their German guards.
Nine months later, in May 1945, by
the time of the fall of the Nazi Reich,
only 275 had survived. The bronze
plaques in this gallery bear the names
of those deported in the “Loos Train”, to
commemorate and pay tribute to them.

Discover the mystery of flight
with Leonardo da Vinci,
Montgolfier brothers, Wright
brothers and other inventors.
Experience the adventure and
find out how this immense and
challenging dream, for which
mankind has strived since the
beginning of history came true.
220 million years ago
dinosaurs were on their rise
to dominating Earth. But
another group of reptiles was
set to make an extraordinary
leap: pterosaurs were about to
take control of the skies. These
creatures were the first flying
vertebrates, which grew to
have a 40ft wingspan, the size
of a jet. The story of how and
why these mysterious creatures
took to the air is more fantastic
that any fiction.
James, a traveling penguin
from the South Pole, and
Vladimir, a funny bear from the
North Pole, meet on the Arctic
sea ice. They become friends,
talk about their respective
regions and observe the stars
together, wondering why the
night is so long at the poles of
the Earth. Thanks to the rigor
of James and the inventive
genius of Vladimir, their
scientific adventure leads
them to build an observatory
and then an improvised
spaceship. During a trip
around the Earth, extended to
Mars and Saturn, they get their
answer and discover that the
planets have similarities but
also differences.
