Key Performance Indicators
(KPI)
Part of the corporate support we provide to
our clients – and that which Tom Mobley will
help focus on for our convention centers – are
Key Performance Indicators (KPI). This checklist of key items reflects the reality of what we
are accomplishing for our clients.
What important KPI criteria do we focus on?
They include the following and more. . . .
• Are we a valuable partner in helping our
client fulfill the facility’s mission?
• Are we achieving – or exceeding – budget and financial performance benchmarks?
• Are we involved in the community in a
positive and meaningful way?
• Are our efforts positively impacting the
economy?
• Are we providing superior customer
services? For example: “How You Doin’?”
• Are hotel operators and other community
stakeholders benefiting from our
presence?
• Are we protecting, maintaining and
repairing your physical assets?
• Have we helped put your community and
facility “on-the-map” by booking a schedule of events that respond positively to
the needs of your constituents?
Industry Perspectives will now become a regular column in The Globe. I would love to
hear from you with any suggestions on issues
that should be addressed in this forum. c

Wachovia Center To Host
2011 NCAA Wrestling
Championships
The NCAA has selected the Wachovia Center
in Philadelphia as the site of the 2011
Division I Wrestling Championships, it was
announced by Air Force Academy Col. William
Walker, Chair of the NCAA Wrestling
Committee. It will be the first time the event
will be held in Philadelphia.
“We think the Wachovia Center is a great facility and we think
it will be great
for the fans,”
said Tom Bold,
of the NCAA Wrestling Committee. “Floor
wise, the Wachovia Center is the biggest
facility (which made a bid) for getting media
down on the floor close to the action.
We think the Pennsylvania area with its proximity to New York is a hotbed for wrestling.”
The Philadelphia Local Organizing Committee
consisted of Global Spectrum, the Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference, Rider University
and the Philadelphia
Sports Congress.
The live theater performance, written by New
Orleans native Tyler Perry, who also authored
the motion picture “Diary of a Mad Black
Woman,” racked up four sold-out performances during the play’s run at the Knight Center.
“Perry has a very big following in South
Florida and the attendance during the week
certainly was proof of his
popularity,” said Knight
Center General Manager Bob
Murray.
“The theater configuration
worked very well, a tribute to
the flexibility of the Knight
Center.”
Al Wash, CEO of Teco
Entertainment, said he hopes to bring the
show back to Miami early next year. c
Millionth Fan Milestone
At Everett Events Center
Little did Doug Horbelt realize when he came
through the turnstile for an Everett Silvertips
hockey game that he would be crowned as
the millionth fan to attend an event at the
Everett Events Center.
“We’re extremely thrilled
the NCAA has selected to
bring
the
Wrestling
Championships to the
Wachovia Center in 2011,”
said Global Spectrum COO
John Page. “This was a total team effort
between Comcast-Spectacor, the MAAC, the
City of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia
Sports Congress. We also want to thank the
local wrestling community for all of their help
in working with our team in our presentation.
“The Wachovia Center is an incredible facility
and we’ve hosted nearly every major event
possible in our brief 10-year history. Bringing
the NCAA Wrestling Championships will help
us further solidify our reputation within the
industry as being the top venue in the United
States,” said Global Spectrum Chairman Peter

The James L. Knight Center in Miami posted
outstanding gross ticket sales of over
$1 million for a week’s engagement of
“Madea Goes to Jail.”
The millionth fan milestone comes two years
after the new facility opened on Oct. 1, 2003.
During that time period, the arena has hosted
104 Silvertips games, 22 concerts, 11 family
shows, 21 high school and college graduations, 11 Hawks indoor football games, two
state volleyball tournaments, two motorcycle
ice racing events and a classic car show.
Prizes for Horbelt included Silvertips season

The staff of the spectacular Arizona Cardinals

Fischer, who formerly coordinated security at

be responsible for all security and guest relations and will act as the stadium’s tactical liaison for events such as Arizona Cardinals

Horbelt and his family were showered with

news recently with the announcement that a 20-story, 400-room

CVB President and CEO Warren E.

officials announced that the new

will be connected to the

Many people turned out to have their children sit behind the wheel of a

The free event was created in conjunction with the Mercer County

of Transportation and local law enforcement, fire department and utility
companies.
The state-of-the-art hotel will
boast nearly 400 rooms and
suites, along with a signature

Front Row Marketing Services Makes Deal With Comcast,
MBNA For Sponsorship Of Bon Jovi Concert Tour
Company Selling World Tour Sponsorships
L
ast spring Front Row was hired by Bon Jovi Management to
market and sell corporate sponsorships to the ‘Have a Nice
Tour’. Led by Adrian Staiti, Vice President of Project
Management and Sr. Director of Ad Sales for Comcast-Spectacor,
and Joe Croce, Sr. Vice President of Sales for Comcast-Spectacor,
the goal was to help Bon Jovi cover some of the hard costs
associated with a 75 city World Tour that spans 10 months.
The process included identifying companies that target music as
a sponsorship medium and share a
similar demographic audience as the
Band. After numerous presentations,
Comcast and MBNA Credit Cards
agreed to partner with Bon Jovi to
create unique sponsorships for the
Have a Nice Day tour.
The Comcast deal is very intricate and is based on providing
Comcast with content for it’s services (On Demand
and Comcast.net). It has many of the standard elements of a
sponsorship deal, but the key
element is a “behind the scenes”
video footage and concert clips
for the purpose of creating video
on demand television segments
that will air on the Bon Jovi video
on demand channel Essentially,
this is a “diary” of the experiences of the band as they
tour the world that will be
directly beamed into Comcast
customers’ homes both online
and on television. MBNA, on the
other hand, signed-on to be the
exclusive affinity credit card of
the band and have produced a
Bon Jovi card that can be
purchased at tour stops and
on-line.
“Together Bon Jovi and Comcast
are delivering a unique and
exclusive
behind-the-scenes
look at the band on the road that
our customers can experience
online and on television,” said Comcast Senior Vice President of
Marketing Dave Watson. “This music sponsorship is the first of its
kind for Comcast and we’re are happy to be partnering with a
great band and committed partner in Bon Jovi.”
So far, two months into the tour, both sponsors are thrilled with
the relationship and the access the band has granted them. These
two deals, along with Sprint (which is the title sponsor of the tour)
amount to record setting numbers for tour sponsorships.
The relationship with Bon Jovi (specifically with Jon Bon Jovi)
started with his football team, the Philadelphia Soul. The team
is entering it’s third season at the Wachovia Center and leads
the Arena Football League in attendance and sponsorship revenue.
The success (and trust) generated
with the Soul allowed Front Row to
forge a close relationship with Jon,
his manager Paul Korzilius, and his
agent Rob Light.
Therefore, when the tour was
initially being planned Adrian
and Front Row were called to
service.
The unnoticed upside to these
deals, however, is our ability to
gain additional trust with the
booking agent and the Band in
order to route through our
buildings. Scheduled for the
Bon Jovi tour are the following
Global Spectrum facilities: Wells
Fargo Arena, Wachovia Center
(two nights) and Rose Garden.

Operations Dave Watson, Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luukko

The next steps for Front Row is
to continue to build a music
sponsorship division. Croce and

Marketing Services team are
currently heading-up efforts to
generate sponsorship money
for Billy Joel, Linkin Park,
Rod Stewart, and others. c

“HOW YOU DOIN’?”
Dear Wells Fargo Arena:
IOWA STARS ADOPT
“How You Doin’?” SPIRIT
Global Spectrum’s “How You Doin’?” spirit has rubbed off on the staff
of the Iowa Stars, the American Hockey League franchise that calls
Wells Fargo Arena its home.
After witnessing the “How You Doin’?” program in action during the
first three months of their inaugural season at the arena and listening to Peter Luukko describe the
Philadelphia Phantoms involvement with
the program at recent American Hockey
League meetings, the team inquired
about how to get its staff, players and
fans even more involved in the program.
“The “How You Doin’?” program has been
a great way to allow the team and facility staff to work together to introduce the central Iowa community
to professional hockey and the new facility,” said Iowa Stars
President John Pettit. “Everyone has taken pride in making this a
successful venture, and this program gives us a common thread to
help achieve this.”
Global Spectrum’s staff at the Iowa Events Center held an orientation
session with the Stars’ staff in to introduce them to the program and
is working with the team to get information and “How You Doin’?”
cards into the hands of season ticket holders. Even players from
the team are getting involved, as
plans are in the works to shoot

“HOW YOU DOIN’?”
“How You Doin’?” Race
At Wachovia Complex
The Amazing HYD Race was held at the Wachovia Complex to focus
employee attention on the unique customer service program.
The race consisted of 12 teams using clues to search around the
Wachovia Complex. Along the way there were challenges for which
Flyers, 76ers, Phantoms, HYD knowledge, and teamwork skills
were key to advancing in the race. Each team consisted of 14
members to hunt down clue envelopes hidden throughout the
Wachovia Center and
Spectrum.
Once clue envelopes were
discovered, teams were
directed to certain challenges around the Complex. When the challenge was completed
successfully, teams were awarded a “scroll” version of an
HYD Top 10 rule.
The winning team finished the Amazing HYD Race in just over
two hours, with all teams finishing within 20 minutes of that
time. A tremendous surprise came an hour following the
finish, when all employees were treated to video that
included highlights of the race they just completed.
The ultimate goal of the race was to acquire all top 10 scrolls.
The first team to find all clues and complete all
challenges was declared the winner.
The event was a tremendous team building activity for
all employees. With such a large staff and so many faces,
it was a great opportunity for people in different departments
to get to know one-another. Clues and challenges presented
unique opportunities for individuals to step-up and lead the
team. And finally, the event allowed all employees to have a
“fun” way to tour the complex and all of its amenities. c
