Cuthbertson said the costs are minimal for set up, and tear down took less than 45 minutes. Sponsorships should cover all the costs. There is certainly the opportunity to be aggressive with sponsorship for this event. It can also generate a few dollars with non-traditional advertisers. c Premios Juventud Largest Event Ever At BankUnited Center’s “TV Studio” The 7,000-seat BankUnited Center on the campus of the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL, was converted into a giant TV studio for the live broadcast of Univision television’s Premios Juventud Award Show to over 100 million viewers. “While the show itself went off without a hitch to millions of listeners throughout the Spanish speaking world, the real show began almost two weeks prior to the red light glowing on a television camera,” according to Patrick L. McGrew, BankUnited Center’s General Manager. “It was the biggest event we have ever done.” The Palm Beach County Convention Center received great news recently with the announcement that a 20-story, 400-room Westin Hotel will be constructed adjacent and connected to the Convention Center. CVB President and CEO Warren E. “Mac” McLaughlin and other local officials announced that the new hotel, which is being developed by contractor Ocean Properties, will be connected to the Convention Center by a bridge walk and would serve as “a true headquarters hotel” for the center’s events. Many people turned out to have their children sit behind the wheel of a large vehicle in the parking lot of Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, NJ. The free event was created in conjunction with the Mercer County Improvement Authority, Park Commission, Mercer County Department of Transportation and local law enforcement, fire department and utility companies. The state-of-the-art hotel will boast nearly 400 rooms and suites, along with a signature restaurant, fitness center, spa, pool and ballroom. McLaughlin said that Westin was a natural choice for the county. “Their strong tradition of service and style mirrors our own efforts to offer travelers the best experience, whether they come to Palm Beach County for business, pleasure or both.” “We think it’s a giant step forward for what we want to do for tourism and conventions throughout Palm Beach County,” said County Commission Chairman Tony Masilotti. c 10 The event is called Touch-ATruck. The premise is simple: big trucks draw little kids and their parents. General Manager Eric Cuthbertson said the building contacted companies, worked with the MCIA and local emergency services agencies to bring their biggest utility trucks, fire engines, police units, school buses, tractors, earth movers, ATV’s and the like to show off their equipment and enhance community relations. THE GLOBE – The World of Global Spectrum The centerpiece of this event was the 75-foot stage, which required over 1,000 man-hours to construct. It featured over 200 lighting fixtures, 53-tons of steel and 10,000-feet of electrical cable, which is enough to run around the entire length of the arena’s main concourse 10 times. In addition to the construction of the stage, the red carpet area in front of the building was another crucial element that Spectacular stage is readied for Univision telecast of Premios Juventud Award Show. FACILITY NEWS generated the majority of the publicity with filming and photography of all the celebrity arrivals. “The logistics required to execute an event like this, including constructing four 30-foot outdoor tents, reassigning parking accommodations and coordinating police security along with international media coverage, is overwhelming”, said Heidi Palmer, the venue’s Director of Marketing. It became even more so with Hurricane Rita to contend with just two days before the event, but everything went ahead as scheduled with no major setbacks. c Everett Events Center Welcomes Mr. & Mrs. Claus The Everett Events Center marketing and sales department cuddled up with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the 20th Anniversary Festival of Trees held at the facility’s Conference Center. Front Row Marketing Services Makes Deal With Comcast, MBNA For Sponsorship Of Bon Jovi Concert Tour Company Selling World Tour Sponsorships L ast spring Front Row was hired by Bon Jovi Management to market and sell corporate sponsorships to the ‘Have a Nice Tour’. Led by Adrian Staiti, Vice President of Project Management and Sr. Director of Ad Sales for Comcast-Spectacor, and Joe Croce, Sr. Vice President of Sales for Comcast-Spectacor, the goal was to help Bon Jovi cover some of the hard costs associated with a 75 city World Tour that spans 10 months. The process included identifying companies that target music as a sponsorship medium and share a similar demographic audience as the Band. After numerous presentations, Comcast and MBNA Credit Cards agreed to partner with Bon Jovi to create unique sponsorships for the Have a Nice Day tour. The Comcast deal is very intricate and is based on providing Comcast with content for it’s services (On Demand and Comcast.net). It has many of the standard elements of a sponsorship deal, but the key element is a “behind the scenes” video footage and concert clips for the purpose of creating video on demand television segments that will air on the Bon Jovi video on demand channel Essentially, this is a “diary” of the experiences of the band as they tour the world that will be directly beamed into Comcast customers’ homes both online and on television. MBNA, on the other hand, signed-on to be the exclusive affinity credit card of the band and have produced a Bon Jovi card that can be purchased at tour stops and on-line. “Together Bon Jovi and Comcast are delivering a unique and exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the band on the road that our customers can experience online and on television,” said Comcast Senior Vice President of Marketing Dave Watson. “This music sponsorship is the first of its kind for Comcast and we’re are happy to be partnering with a great band and committed partner in Bon Jovi.” So far, two months into the tour, both sponsors are thrilled with the relationship and the access the band has granted them. These two deals, along with Sprint (which is the title sponsor of the tour) amount to record setting numbers for tour sponsorships. The relationship with Bon Jovi (specifically with Jon Bon Jovi) started with his football team, the Philadelphia Soul. The team is entering it’s third season at the Wachovia Center and leads the Arena Football League in attendance and sponsorship revenue. The success (and trust) generated with the Soul allowed Front Row to forge a close relationship with Jon, his manager Paul Korzilius, and his agent Rob Light. Therefore, when the tour was initially being planned Adrian and Front Row were called to service. The unnoticed upside to these deals, however, is our ability to gain additional trust with the booking agent and the Band in order to route through our buildings. Scheduled for the Bon Jovi tour are the following Global Spectrum facilities: Wells Fargo Arena, Wachovia Center (two nights) and Rose Garden. Jon Bon Jovi (second from right) joins (l to r) Front Row Marketing Services Vice President Adrian Staiti, Comcast Cable Executive Vice President of Operations Dave Watson, Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luukko and (back row) Global Spectrum Chief Operating Officer John Page in announcing exciting new deal for Comcast subscribers. The next steps for Front Row is to continue to build a music sponsorship division. Croce and Stait, and the Front Row Marketing Services team are currently heading-up efforts to generate sponsorship money for Billy Joel, Linkin Park, Rod Stewart, and others. c THE GLOBE – The World of Global Spectrum 19 Front Row Signed To Sell Rights At New Sault Ste. After witnessing the “How You Doin’?” program in action during the first three months of their inaugural season at the arena and listening to Peter Luukko describe the Philadelphia Phantoms involvement with the program at recent American Hockey League meetings, the team inquired about how to get its staff, players and fans even more involved in the program. “The “How You Doin’?” program has been a great way to allow the team and facility staff to work together to introduce the central Iowa community to professional hockey and the new facility,” said Iowa Stars President John Pettit. “Everyone has taken pride in making this a successful venture, and this program gives us a common thread to help achieve this.” Global Spectrum’s staff at the Iowa Events Center held an orientation session with the Stars’ staff in to introduce them to the program and is working with the team to get information and “How You Doin’?” cards into the hands of season ticket holders. Even players from the team are getting involved, as plans are in the works to shoot additional scenes for the Iowa Events Center’s “How You Doin’?” video featuring Stars staff, players enter: and the team’s mascot. c Dear Constant C Hi! I just wanted to thank you and the city of Des Moines for hosting the incredible Paul McCartney concert last week. I decided to come from Madison, WI, at the last minute and found everyone to be very friendly and accommodating, the venue complex comfortably accessible, and parking was convenient and inexpensive. I would also like to share the sentiments of a fellow poster at the paulmccartney.com forum who traveled much further and was also favorably impressed. Well, Andy and I just returned to Los Angeles from our little Des Moines adventure and I am absolutely OVERJOYED about the entire experience, from start to finish, that I hardly know where to begin!! THE GLOBE – The World of Global Spectrum 21 “HOW YOU DOIN’?” “How You Doin’?” Race At Wachovia Complex The Amazing HYD Race was held at the Wachovia Complex to focus employee attention on the unique customer service program. The race consisted of 12 teams using clues to search around the Wachovia Complex. Along the way there were challenges for which Flyers, 76ers, Phantoms, HYD knowledge, and teamwork skills were key to advancing in the race. Each team consisted of 14 members to hunt down clue envelopes hidden throughout the Wachovia Center and Spectrum. Once clue envelopes were discovered, teams were directed to certain challenges around the Complex. When the challenge was completed successfully, teams were awarded a “scroll” version of an HYD Top 10 rule. The winning team finished the Amazing HYD Race in just over two hours, with all teams finishing within 20 minutes of that time. A tremendous surprise came an hour following the finish, when all employees were treated to video that included highlights of the race they just completed. The ultimate goal of the race was to acquire all top 10 scrolls. The first team to find all clues and complete all challenges was declared the winner. The event was a tremendous team building activity for all employees. With such a large staff and so many faces, it was a great opportunity for people in different departments to get to know one-another. Clues and challenges presented unique opportunities for individuals to step-up and lead the team. And finally, the event allowed all employees to have a “fun” way to tour the complex and all of its amenities. c Dear David S emon, Last week, m y wife and I w ent to the Constant Cen ter for the firs t time.
