Paarl neurochirurg verloor 70 kg
met sy rewolusionêre dieët!
Die leefstyl aanpassing wat Dr.
Liebenberg gevolg het en ter boek
gestaaf het in sy boek “The Brain
Surgeon’s Diet” het wondere verrig vir
hom en hy het ‘n kollosale gedaante
verwisseling ondergaan.
Kollegas
genoeg is genoeg.
is nie. Nie mollig, groot gebou, plomp of
interessante feite geleer oor hormone
soos Leptien, Ghrelin, Insulien, Kortisol,
Hy
deel dit ook in sy boek The Brain Surgeon’s
Diet.
vrystelling daarvan gedoen is, by top
verkoper status gaan draai.
was.
hoop as mens nie hierdie siklus verbreek
nie.
“Medici kan net soveel doen, die
res is in die hande van jy as
persoon self. As jy jouself
aanwend, aanhou en deurdruk
sal jy blywende resultate sien.”
“Nie mollig, groot gebou,
plomp of enige ander
troetel naampie nie,
maar vet.”
Dr. Liebenberg
in teater 3 jaar
gelede
Saam met ‘n baie eenvoudige oefen
program het hy baie gou sukses behaal.
Dr. Liebenberg voel mense verwag
te veel van hul huisdokters of van
dieetkundiges. “Die sprong van ‘n gereelde
verkeerde stewige bord kos, gemors
Paarl Waterfront Development to proceed
The Paarl Waterfront Development
is fulfilling a long-awaited need
in the Boland - that of a multi-use

facilities.
Situated in central Paarl, adjacent to the
Berg River, it bridges east and west and
serves both communities with its unique
mix of commercial, retail, residential and
sporting facilities. The Paarl Waterfront
is, in fact, the only such combined
development in the Boland region.

Klip innie bos
Inwoners en besigheidseienaars van
Paarl wonder hoekom die toerbusse van
‘n sekere bekende toeriste maatskappy
Paarl inkom, links draai op na die
Taalmonument, ‘n wyle daar spandeer
Iemand
het genoem die busse het nie parkeerplek
in die dorp, ‘n ander sê die busse weet
nie waar om om te draai nie... Ek weet
darem nie daarvan nie, daar is lieflike
parkeerplek agter Zomerlust, sentraal,
of per begeleide toer verder verken. Dit
dalk by Rhebokskloof of ander oppad uit?
Doen ‘n sirkelroete en ry Agter-Paarl pad
terug na die N1. Nee wat, Klip innie bos
dink daar is geen verskoning, komaan
toerbusbestuurders en toerbegeleiders,
bring die mense verder die dorp in as
net die Taalmonument. Die Paarl siel
lê ontbloot, jy moet darem so ‘n bietjie
Elektrisiteitsverhogings
Die 2011/12 begroting is tydens
‘n Raadsitting op 21 April 2011
goedgekeur wat meebring dat die
elektrisiteitstariewe as volg verhoog
is vir die 2001/12 begrotingsjaar:
Voorafbetaalde elektrisiteit
Konvensionele elektrisiteit
17%
19%
Die Nasionale Energiereguleerder van
Suid-Afrika (NERSA) het op 28 Junie 2011
bogenoemde tariewe goedgekeur maar
verdere opwaartse tariefwysigings aanbeveel
ontvang.
PROFESSIONALIZATION OF LOCAL
GOVERNMENT GAINS MOMENTUM
AND ENTERS INTO A NEW ERA
Acknowledging the fact that local government
has generally failed to deliver effective and
efficient services to communities and that this
failure is seriously hampering Government’s
efforts to build cohesive, sustainable and
quality communities, President Jacob Zuma
recently signed into law the Municipal
Systems Amendment Act 07 of 2011. This Act
now compels municipal councils to appoint
non- political, qualified and competent
municipal managers and senior managers
to administratively lead and manage their
municipalities.
In a further attempt to enhance the professionalization of South African municipalities, the Institute for Local Government
Management of South Africa (ILGM) recently
mandated the Chairperson of its Regulatory
& Professionalization Committee, Dr Pravine
Naidoo to draft new legislation for submission
to Parliament which would regulate all
municipal managers and senior managers in
municipalities.
Dr Pravine Naidoo based in Paarl, Western
Cape stated: “The draft new legislation is now
ready from the ILGM’s side which will be
processed via the National Department of
Cooperative Governance to Parliament. The
new innovative legislation deals extensively
with the professionalization of local government
management. The proposed legislation is
being referred to as the – Local Government:
Professional Management Act of 2012.”
Dr Naidoo points out that “it would be
compulsory for all municipal managers and
senior managers to register with the proposed
South African Professional Local Government
Management Council (SAPLGMC) and
subscribe and adhere to a Code of Professional
Conduct & Ethics. The SAPLGMC would be
managed by a Registrar who will be appointed
by the Minister. Every municipal manager and
senior manager would possess a registration
certificate with a registration number licenced
to practice”.
Dr. Naidoo
Dr Naidoo explained further that “any municipal
manager or senior manager whom are found
to be guilty of corruption, mismanagement,
maladministration, financial misconduct or any
other misconduct by their municipalities, will be
summarily, after due process, struck off the roll
of local government management practitioners.
This effectively means that, depending on the
nature of their misconduct and stipulated timeperiods, they would never be able to obtain
employment in any municipality in South
Africa or internationally whatsoever.”
“We want to enhance the image of local
government management in South Africa and
ensure that services to our communities are
delivered and managed in a professional and
accountable manner. Furthermore, we want
our municipal administrations to manage
public resources in an effective and efficient
manner in order to inspire confidence from
members of the public. The proposed new Act
would provide the Minister powers in terms
of appointing members of the SAPLGMC and
regulating the practice of professional local
government management in general. It is
also envisaged that a new professional postgraduate practice qualification would be made
compulsory for municipal managers and senior
managers in order to be professionally certified”,
Dr Naidoo further elaborated.

Municipality changed the lives of thirteen families
Drakenstein Municipality has recently enriched the lives of thirteen
families in Fairyland by handing
over keys to them for their own
houses.
Councillor Lutisia Daries, Portfolio
Holder of Human Settlements and Land
Development, shared the excitement of an
own home with the beneficiaries.
“I can still remember the excitement when
I first moved into my own home and you
as the beneficiaries must remember that
a home is an investment. I will come
and visit you when you have moved into
your houses and I plead with you as the
community to build strong relationships
with one another”, said Councillor Daries.
The Executive Mayor, Councillor Gesie van
Deventer, encouraged the beneficiaries to
look after their homes and take ownership
of it.
“Monday, 18 July 2011 was Mandela
Day. We all should take one hour of
our time to make a change within our
communities. I must emphasize that you
as the beneficiaries must not sell your
houses, because these houses could have
been rewarded to other people in need of
houses”, said van Deventer.
This project, Project 59 in Fairyland, started
as a Peoples’ Housing Process (PHP)
where the beneficiaries participated in the
decision making process and the project
consists of 975 units where the construction
was done in phase 4, 5, 6 and 7.
The minimum house size as per Provincial
Department Human Settlements specifications and conditions, was 40m2 and the
beneficiaries were not required to make
any contribution. The beneficiaries have
the choice for bigger houses of 42m2 and
50m2 where they will then have to make a
contribution as per the PHP Policy.
HANDOVER CEREMONY. Here at the Housing Handover Ceremony, (second from left)
the Executive Mayor, Councillor Gesie van Deventer, hand over the keys to Rebecca Nel
(beneficiary). With them are (from left), Councillor Sonwabo Lumko (Ward 14 Councillor),
Councillor Lutisia Daries (Portfolio Holder: Human Settlements and Land Development)
and Kefiwe Sethoabane (Head of Department: Housing).

Paarl Waterfront
With more than 40 000 school learners and
some of the most prestigious sport schools
in the Drakenstein region, the proposed
Paarl Waterfront’s High Performance Centre
will be unique to the Boland and will serve
as a major draw card to its retail, hospitality
and sports components.
The facility will house a Centre of Excellence
with a focus on schools, sporting clubs,
provincial teams and especially the
coaching and administrative personnel.
It will also include accommodation and
conference facilities to accommodate the
sportsmen and women attending training
sessions and coaching courses.
The High Performance Centre is augmented
by a sport assessment and rehabilitation
facility, a gymnasium and indoor pool, all
linked to related specialists in adjoining
medical rooms.
At time of going to press, in Paarl News have
not yet managed to receive any feedback
from Mr. Garth Adams, Managing Director
of the Paarl Waterfront Development. We
have however learned the development is
earmarked for building to start early next
year. We hope to publish a more detailed
report soon.

Local food, local

the perfect combo!
Pizza with Smoked Snoek, Roasted beets and
Dalewood Huguenot Cheese with Water Cress
dressed with a balsamic glaze.
This is a wonderful lively combination of flavours which showcases
some of the fine ingredients produced here in Paarl with an iconic Cape
ingredient, snoek.
Smoked Snoek - 100g – bones and skin removed and shredded
Huguenot Cheese - 100g - grated
Mozzarella - 100g - grated
Beets - place 3 - 4 smallish equal sized beets and 4 unpeeled cloves of
garlic with a little olive oil and dust with rock salt – place on sufficient
foil to make a good package - place in your pizza oven and roast 45 mins cool, peel and slice. Remove the garlic from its outer skin and mash garlic
with some olive oil and a bit of salt.
Make your best pizza dough - a sour dough would be best
Open the dough, place in pizza pan, or on pizza palate and dress
Brush base with garlic oil mix
Sprinkle grated Mozzarella and a little of the Huguenot Dress with beets
and snoek, making sure the ingredients are evenly spaced on the base
Sprinkle with the remaining Huguenot.
Bake in a hot pizza oven till cooked - remove pizza from oven and rest for a minute or two in a bowl, take a handful of water cress - make sure it is quite dry, give a good drizzle of
Brenda’s balsamic reduction, a pinch of salt, a twist of pepper and a little drizzle of your
best Extra Virgin Olive Oil, garnish the pizza with the cress, cut and serve.
You will need a big glass of Rosalind Rosé or Den Chenin Blanc with this.
Oven roasted tuna with a sundried tomato, orange and
marjoram salsa, white bean and marrow gratin.
FOR 6 PEOPLE
Allow 200 - 250g of Tuna per person (you could substitute yellow tail or Dorado, but yellow
Fin Tuna, of which a great deal is caught in the Cape, is best)
Cut in slices of about 1-1.5 cm thick and rub with a little oil, salt and pepper.
FOR THE SALSA
50g sundried tomatoes - pour boiling water over the
tomatoes to soften, then chop
1 cup of marjoram leaves, removed from stalks - chopped
2 garlic cloves – remove shoot if these are one, and finely chop do not use pre-crushed garlic, it is yucky!
1 seedless orange - finely grate the rind and save, then peel
and segment coarsely chopping segments reserve juice from orange
1 cup good local extra virgin olive oil
1 dried red chilli
1-2T cider vinegar
In a pestle and mortar, combine all of the ingredients except from
the orange
SEGMENTS AND MAKE A COURSE PASTE
You will need a cast iron pot if you want to cook this in your pizza oven
250g dried white beans soaked and cooked till soft with a bay leaf, a few
cloves of garlic and a PINCH OF THYME, or a can of Italian Haricot
blanc which can be bought from most
1 large onion - sliced and fried in a little oil till begin to brown,
add 2 - 3 anchovies, with a little oil from the anchovies
6 - 8 baby marrows - cut in rounds about 2 cm thick and cover – cooking
in the oven – stir every few minutes to make sure that the bottom of the
pot does not catch. Cook till soft. Add beans and sprinkle with
1 cup bread crumbs made with stale baguette, ciabatta or other nice bread
½ cup Parmesan or grana cheese
Drizzle with a little nice olive oil and bake again in over to brown the crust. In the mean time heat a skillet
in the over, and when it is hot, seer the tuna. Plate with a spoon of the beans, a nice piece of tuna and a
good dollop of the salsa. Serve with Painted Wolf Guillermo Pinotage, Den Chenin Blanc or Leyanyane.

FINANSIEEL
beleggers in Suid-Afrika is nie.
Bron: The New Yorker, Bernard Schoenbaum
In ‘n vorige nuusbrief het ons verskeie
vooroordele probeer uitwys sowel as ons
menslike geneigdheid om onvermydelik
swak besluite te neem wanneer ons emosies
ons “aanval” (sien insetsel). Vrees is netso
verdoemend soos hebsug.
Napoleon het eenkeer gesê: “Goeie intelligensie
is 9/10’s van enige stryd”.
Dit is vir hierdie redes waarom ons by
‘n deeglike plan en ‘n eenvoudige, maar
bewese beleggingsfilosofie hou (onthou
dat eenvoud nooit met maklik verwar moet
word nie). Byvoorbeeld Albert Einstein se
relatiwiteitsteorie is vasgelê in ‘n “eenvoudige”
formule E = mc2. Dink daaroor na! In die
moderne era met komplekse stelsels en ‘n
wye verskeidenheid van keuses het eenvoud
noodsaaklik geword.
Alle
beleggers word gekonfronteer met tydelike
periodes van onder- of middelmatige prestasie,
maar konsekwentheid is noodsaaklik.
Die Internet era oorweldig ons met groot
hoeveelhede data en inligting. Statistici beweer
dat ons gebombardeer word met meer inligting
per dag as wat jaarliks geproduseer is gedurende
die 19de eeu. So hoe maak ons sin van al die
mark inligting? Is dit moontlik om te verteer?
Sielkundiges het d.m.v. spesifieke eksperimente
tot verstommende gevolgtrekkings gekom. Ons
vereis om sodoende die verlies op te maak;
opbrengs-koers. Dit is gewoonlik waar ons
almal verkeerd oordeel. Op Wall Street lui die
spreekwoord: “Are you going to sleep well, or eat
well?”
Waarvan moet ons kennis
neem?
kennis of deeglike begrip van sy, of haar eie
sake nie. Meer as dikwels plaas die meeste
mense hulle vertroue in ‘n bepaalde persoon
i.p.v. ‘n model. Volgens ons, is dit fundamenteel
verkeerd. By Afrafin wil ons graag kwaliteit tyd
saam met ons kliënte spandeer. Ons verkies om
op ‘n gereelde basis na die beplanningsmodel
en onderliggende beleggingsstrategieë te kyk
sodat kliënte die basiese elemente begryp. Ons
Hier is ‘n paar basiese
riglyne wanneer mense
advies soek:
Kies ‘n beleggingsfilosofie teenoor ‘n groep,
of individu.
Vertrou u instink. Te dikwels word individue
beïndruk deur fantastiese aanbiedinge en
briljante bemarkings-taktieke deur gepoleerde
individue. Bly standvastig in u soeke na gesonde
beleggingsbeginsels. Die meeste onrealistiese
beloftes is onvolhoubaar oor die lang termyn.
Onlangs het beleggers in eiendomskemas weer
swaar lesse geleer.
Hoe lyk dit vorentoe?
Bepaal doelwitte en hersien dit. Hierdie
is een van ons fokuspunte. Vroeg tydens die
beplannings-fase bepaal ons die gekose leefstyl
van kliënte en ons projeksies word gereeld
nagesien.
“baie onseker tye” is. Was daar enige tydperk in
die geskiedenis waar mense van die toekoms
seker kon wees?
winste sou waardeer.

Excuse me .... cats
were once revered as
goddesses!
MAGDALENA’S
HOUSE OF SCISSORS
Marietjie Roux-Spangenberg
Cats have been a source of fascination for mankind
throughout history. I was fascinated by Readers Restaurant’s
so called “cat room”, which is in actual fact a curious cat gift
shop, which started at Tulbagh in 2008. Carol Collin, owner of
Readers, and her love and dedication for street cats made me
wonder why some people are such serious, and I mean really
serious…cat lovers, even owning a cat shop! I find myself going
back into the history of cats, back some 4000 odd years.
The Ancient Egyptians were the first to keep domesticated cats
and used them to control vermin and other pests to protect
stores of food. Cats were revered as hunters and worshiped as
gods or goddesses by the Egyptians.
The shorthaired domestic cat spread across the world from
Egypt while longhaired cats came later from Turkey and Iran.
The domestic cat also spread from India to China and Japan, and
after many many generations, eleven of them found themselves
at home at Readers.
At this stage of my research I sent Carol an email, challenging her
to go down memory lane to 14 years ago when she first moved
to Tulbagh, where her journey began with a family of street cats
who lived in Church street. They were all first sterilized, the
kittens were caught, domesticated and then good homes were
found for all of them.
Titan (meaning powerful big man) was the first cat to find a
safe haven at Readers. Soon came Mommy Cat, tortoiseshell
with long hair. It took about one year to fully domesticate her.
Mommy Cat died of old age and a real queen… or may I say a
real goddess to the end.
Pushka (meaning Russian cannon) were the next one to arrive
at her newly found kingdom, a small cat with short legs not
quite matching the meaning of her name or personality. She
was incredibly loving and was always the center of attention.
Pushka was loved by all Readers guests, but after 5 happy years
she died from feline leukemia and now lives in kitty heaven with
Mommy Cat and Titan.
Ginger joined the Readers family and his heart was full of love
for children. He had lots of patience and would allow children
to poke, push, pull and jab him, then disappear, only to return
shortly for more!
There were also Mogli, Sokkies and even Gucci, hence called
after Gucci sunglasses (being black around his eyes). The latest
additions to the family are now just over seven months old
and with names such as Prada, Diesel and Fossil they will also
become the in-house brand names living at Readers.
Not knowing any member of this special cat family, their likes
and dislikes, I came to realize that I also don’t know what cats’
likes and dislikes are.
Cats like a little place in the sun, near the stove, on the sofa, in
the bed or on top of a cupboard.
Like to have a “chat” several times a day with its owner or with
other cats.
Like doing acrobatics on top of tall pieces of furniture or
between glasses and vases, climbing curtains, sharpening claws
on sofas and wallpaper.
Like catching a mouse, chasing chickens, startling its owner,
annoying birds, playing with paper in little balls or rolls.
What they don’t like is food that is too cold or too hot or that has
gone bad in dirty bowls.
They don’t like marital disputes, screaming children, barking
dogs, and tractor noises, low flying planes, noisy New Year’s Eve
parties and thunderstorms.
Don’t like being treated as a decorative piece of furniture.
Do not like to be excluded from parts of the house.
Do not like dandruff hair, greasy, matted hair on its coat, biting
ticks, fleas, and ear mites.
Cats don’t like to be kept in isolation. They want to rule your
house, your business, your car, your bed, therefore a home
without a well-fed, well petted and properly revered cat is not home.

THE VOUCHER PROJECT – addressing
the homeless problem in Paarl
We see them everywhere.
People that seem to have lost
their way and end up on the
streets.
Some try to provide a useless car
guard service and some just come to
ask you without shame for “ ‘n paar
sent vir ‘n broodjie”. If you are like
us, you sometimes cave in and hand
over a R2 coin (especially if there is a
child sitting on the person’s hip, with
that dull look of malnourishment in
their eyes). The homeless with the
kids on the hip gets you every time
and we cannot but give when a child
is staring at the bags of groceries we
are carrying with us.
Unfortunately deep down we know
that this R2 coin is not solving the
problem. 8 out of 10 times, the
money finds its way to the wrong
things. Alcohol, tik, glue, spirits. And
so the cycle goes on and on with no
apparent solution.
The system’s principles are simple:
Now finally, we hope that we have
a solution that will not only address
the immediate hunger and cold of
homeless people, it will go much
further and deal with the problem at
its root.
DON’T
WALK PAST HIM
GIVE HIM A VOUCHER
There are an estimated 2,000 homeless people living on the streets of Paarl. By giving money, it often
ends up funding an addiction rather than necessities. To respond effectively to their needs, the Homeless Care initiative launched a program in Paarl called The Voucher Project. The program has a
three phase approach that includes:
◦ Making Contact - helping the homeless with their most immediate needs and getting to know
them.
◦ Rehabilitation - providing job opportunities and training that allows the homeless to get back on
their feet.
◦ Reintegration - helping the participants to get through the process of getting a job and re-entering
society.
By supporting The Voucher Project we can make a difference by giving responsibly. Vouchers can be
bought at selected outlets on Main Road and are exchangeable for clothes and food at three different
centres. The voucher also creates an opportunity for a homeless person to be exposed to relationship
programs that aim to restore and empower them. Please don’t stop giving, give responsibly. Support
the Voucher Project.
For more information, go to www.homelesscare.co.za
THE
VOUCHER
PROJECT
The initiative is called “The Voucher
Project” and is coordinated by MCM
Miqlat’s Homeless Care Ministry.
A Monte Christo Miqlat Initiative
1. We should take money off the
streets
2. We need to address the real
needs – not fuel the unhealthy
habits of street people
3. We need to intervene and
provide an alternative to a life
on the street
4. We need to give these people
love and self-worth, the one
thing they need to receive if
they want to break free from a
life on the streets.
This we do by providing R5 vouchers
in booklets of 8 at designated (R40\
booklet) sales points throughout
Paarl. Paarl citizens are encouraged
to keep these booklets in their
cars or handbags at all times and
when asked for money by homeless
people, handing them the voucher
instead of money. These vouchers
are redeemable by homeless people
for either food (currently served
at 2 central locations) or 1 piece of
clothing from the Hospice shop. In
time MCM (Monte Christo Miqlat)
also hopes to add a night-shelter
option to the voucher.
Most importantly, when the homeless come to redeem this voucher,
their names and details are taken into
the MCM database to start building
a relationship and keeping track of
them. It is estimated that there are
more than 2000 homeless people in
Paarl alone. They are encouraged to
join the various worker teams with
which MCM provide garden services
to individuals or street cleaning
services to the Municipality of Paarl.
As trust is built, they can be counseled
to start the long road to taking their
rightful place as a productive citizen
of our society.
We encourage every person in Paarl
to support “The Voucher Project”
and assist us to address the homeless
problem in our town in a constructive
way. We will have succeeded in our
mission to eradicate poverty off the
streets of Paarl when each of us drives
around with a voucher booklet and
can find no one to give it to.
Join us and let’s make a
constructive difference.

Wedding Bells: How to find
the perfect wedding venue...
As you all know wedding season is approaching
rapidly and engagements are happening all over.
But once the question is asked and the wedding
date is set, what do you do next? Well no wedding
can be hosted without the perfect wedding venue.
Every bride wants her wedding to be absolutely
breathtaking so how would one go about finding
the perfect venue?
Firstly you need to decide in what area you would
like to host your wedding, you also need to decide
if you need a ceremony and reception venue at
one destination. You will then need to make a list
of all the possible wedding venues in the area that
you would be interested in. The next step would
be to obtain prices, but do not let the prices make
your final decision. Every venue has a unique style
and service standard so it would not be fair to
either of the venues to compare them with one
another just by looking at their prices.
You will narrow your venue list down to about
five to seven venues for the actual viewing. Just a
quick tip, never schedule all your venue viewings
back to back as you will always stay longer than
planned. Have a sufficient break in between your
venue viewings to minimize confusion between
the venues. You want to remember each venue as
unique.
The most important part of the venue viewing
is to ask the right questions. Now I know you are
wondering what the correct questions are, well
here are the five most important questions for you
to remember:
1. How many guests can your venue host? – This
is a basic immediate yes or no when deciding
on a venue and remember you want your
guests to be comfortable.
2. What is included in the venue package? – You
need to know whether the prices are fair to
what the venue offers for you as a client.
3. What are the extra costs? – Please always
make sure that you read the terms and
conditions and that you make sure what you
would need to pay extra for as this is usually
where the catch comes in.
4. Would you be able to work with my budget? – You can ask them to bend on their prices,
just as long as you keep in mind they also have
expenses to pay.
5. What do you allow with the setup of décor?
– This is important so that you as a bride know
what you will be able to do with the venue to
make it fit your style.
Always remember you need to choose a wedding
venue that will suit all your needs and it is always
financially rewarding to choose a venue that has a
look and feel that does not need a lot of décor. The
perfect venue for every bride is out there, you just
need to find the right one for you.

Jolene and Olivier have taken over Medi Skin Beauty Salon situated
on 227 A Main Road Paarl. Along with the products the loyal clients
have been used to, and after extensive research, Jolene and Olivier are
introducing, for the first time in South Africa, Algotherm. A range of
French marine cosmetics from Deauville, Normandy, where Olivier
comes from. Normandy was all the rage in the XIXth century amongst
Parisians and rich foreigners for the fresh and healthy air, full of iodine
from the sea and the rich variety of seaweeds and the very eccentric
‘bathing in the sea’. It was so successful that in the 1860’s a new beach
resort was created near Trouville, called Deauville. The brother of the
French Emperor Napoleon III went as far as investing on a direct train
track from Paris so that the rich and famous could rejuvenate for the
year ahead. But a healthy climate without fun is no good: a casino and
a race course sprung up and Deauville has remained the meeting place
for the chic and the posh and the eternally fashionable. Soon after its
creation, painters flocked to Deauville for its exceptional light (all the
impressionists started selling their paintings there), then writers and
musicians. Even Coco Chanel launched her career in Deauville.
Man and Sea are intimately linked: 40 years of
technology and research has enabled Algotherm to
meticulously use selected seaweeds,
sea water, marine elements rich in minerals and
trace elements to formulate skin and body care
treatments and elixirs to restore well-being
and rejuvenate the skin.
The bio similarity with our bodies allows effective absorption and
visible results. The seaweeds selected by Algotherm are sustainably
harvested, not tested on animals and free from any harmful additives.
Algotherm’s packaging is 100% biodegradable. There is no reason why
one cannot be beautiful, healthy and environmentally aware at the
same time!

MEDICAL
When Baby Blues Turns Black
- Dr. Karien Botha
Post–natal depression: when to
seek help
Postnatal depression is a cross- cultural form
of major depression which affects almost 13%
of women and may have serious health risks
for both mother and child.
Baby blues affects 50 to 80% of women,
symptoms can last up to 10 days after
giving birth. The most common presenting
symptoms of baby blues are: mood swings,
depression, irritability, tearfulness, anxiety,
sleep and appetite changes it should clear up
with only supportive intervention.
Post natal depression has the following
symptoms which require urgent attention: a 2
week or longer period of depressed mood, lack
of interest or pleasure in almost all activities,
weight loss or gain, insomnia, restlessness,
lack of energy, feelings of worthlessness, and
thoughts about death or suicide.
In severe cases mothers may experience
negative feelings towards the baby and not
wanting to have this baby anymore. They may
experience bouts of anger and even violent
impulses, like shaking the baby excessively for
crying too often. Obsessive thoughts about the
baby’s health and safety may cause a mother
to behave out of character.
You are at risk if you have a personal or family
history of depression. Being a single mother
or having marital conflict may exacerbate
the symptoms. Having a baby with feeding
or sleeping problems or even a difficult
temperament can contribute to post natal
depression.
WHAT ARE THE CONCEQUENSES
OF NO TREATMENT:
Post natal depression is a serious medical
condition, not only because of the suffering
EDINBURGH POSTNATAL
DEPRESSION SELFRATING
SCALE
In the past 7 days:
it causes women, but also due to the negative
effects on infants emotionally, socially and
cognitively, even long after the depression
has subsided. The most severe outcomes of
untreated post natal depression are marital
disruption and divorce, child abuse and
neglect and maternal suicide or infanticide.
Depressed mothers display a negative
interaction style with their infants and the
infants in turn display more irritability and
low activity levels. Children of depressed
mothers may experience insecurity, low self
esteem and poor intellectual and language
skills. Research has shown an increase in
hyperactive behaviour, especially in boys,
when depression stays untreated.
TREATMENT OPTIONS:
The approach to the treatment of post natal
depression is similar to the treatment of a
major depressive episode.
Antidepressant
medication:
Several
studies have demonstrated the efficacy of
antidepressant medication in depression.
Serotonin re-uptake inhibitors are well
tolerated and are the first line of treatment.
Most patients show improvement in symptoms
after 2 to 4 weeks of starting medication.
Clinical improvement in symptoms should be
obtained after 6 to 8 weeks on treatment.
The optimal duration of treatment should be
at least 12 months. (First episode) Patients
who are decompensating or not responding
adequately should be referred to a psychiatrist.
Psychotherapy:
Psychotherapy
forms
an integral part of the treatment plan.
Interpersonal therapy may be useful, as
it focuses on the patient’s interpersonal
relationships and changing roles. Cognitive
behaviour therapy was also found to be a very
effective modality.

Is jou kind aandag
afleibaar of lei hy/sy dalk
aan hiperaktiwiteit?
- Retha van Wyk
Aandagtekort / Hiperaktiwiteit Versteuring
AT/HV kom by
meer by seuns as dogters. Meer seuns as dogters
word met hiperaktiwiteit gediagnoseer. Meer
dogters as seuns word gediagnoseer met ‘n
aandagtekortprobleem. Daar kom gemiddeld
leerders. Dogters met AT/HV toon ‘n laer risiko
funksionering belemmer.
Daar bestaan tans geen laboratoriumtoetse soos
‘n bloedtoets of ‘n spesifieke diagnostiese toets vir
AT/HV nie.
in ander aktiwiteite
•
het dikwels probleme met volgehoue
aandaggewing aan take en spelaktiwiteite
•
blyk asof nie luister wanneer direk
aangespreek word nie
•
voltooi nie instruksies nie en misluk om
gegewe take af te handel. Hierdie onvermoë
is nie as gevolg van opponerende gedrag of
gebrek aan begrip van instruksies nie
•
het dikwels probleme om take en aktiwiteite
te organiseer
•
vermy, hou nie van of is traag met take wat
volgehoue verstandelike inspanning verg
(soos skool- en huiswerk)
•
verloor dikwels goed wat nodig is vir take
of aktiwiteite (byvoorbeeld speelgoed,
potlood, boeke)
•
aandag word maklik afgelei deur irrelevante
eksterne stimuli
•
is dikwels vergeetagtig in daaglikse
aktiwiteite
belemmer:
HIPERAKTIWITEIT
•
vroetel met hande of voete of kriewel in
sitplek
•
verlaat dikwels sitplek in klaskamer of in
ander situasies waar dit verwag word dat
persoon moet bly sit
•
hardloop rond of klim oormatig in situasies
waar dit onvanpas is
•
•
onderbreek dikwels die aktiwiteite van
ander (byvoorbeeld meng in by gesprekke
of speletjies)
MEDIKASIE
Medikasie ‘genees’ nie AT/HV nie. Dit verbeter
slegs die primêre kenmerke van AT/HV, naamlik
aandagtekort, hiperaktiwiteit en impulsiwiteit.
Tensy die siklus verbreek word deur byvoorbeeld
gedragsterapie, ouerleiding, spesialisdienste,
medikasie en dieetaanpassings kan ernstiger
probleme ontwikkel.

land. Byna 20 000 nuwe gevalle word jaarliks
gediagnoseer en daar is meer as 700 sterftes
elke jaar.
Die effek van UVR op die vel
Meer as 80% van die velskade as gevolg van die
son word opgedoen voor die ouderdom van
18 jaar, maar wys eers later. Velveranderinge
wat deur ultraviolet veroorsaak word
sluit in sonbruin, sonbrand, veroudering,
leukoplakie, solare keratoses asook velkanker.
Laasgenoemde sluit veral 3 tipes in, naamlik
basaalselkarsinoom,
plaveiselkarsinoom
velkanker. UVA penetreer dieper in die vel en
beskadig die struktuur van die selle, veroorsaak
veroudering en verhoog ook die risiko vir
velkanker.
Sonbeddens lewer gekonsentreerde UVA op
onbeskermde vel en moet ten alle koste vermy
word aangesien dit veroudering versnel en die
kans om velkanker te kry verhoog met 20%
vir elke 10 jaar se sonbed blootstelling voor
die ouderdom van 56. Die kans op melanoom
verdubbel in so ‘n persoon.
verhoog.
Hierdie risikofaktore is:
• groot moesies by geboorte
• meer as 50 moesies
• ongewone moesies (groter, onreëlmatige
en veelkleurige moesies)
•
•
•
•
•
•
vorige sonbrand veral as kind waar blase
gebrand is
binnenshuise werk met buitenshuise sport of ontspanningsaktiwiteite
werk in die son
motorbestuur in die son
self vorige melanoom in die verlede
familiegeskiedenis van vorige melanome
Omgewingsfaktore speel ook ‘n rol. Vir elke
300m bo seespieël, verhoog die direkte
bestraling met 4%. Wolke verskaf baie min
beskerming. Denim bied goeie beskerming,
katoen laat ongeveer 15% UVR deur, maar nat
katoen so veel as 30% en nylon kouse tot 75%.

meer as twee kleure asook in grootte meer as
6 mm.

Basaalselkarsinoom is opgehewe pêrelagtige
sonareas. Maligne melanome is klein swart
of bruin of groter veelkleurige plake met
onreelmatige rande wat kan ontstaan in vorige
moesies of vanself.

Information on Lymphoma
Lime Green is the ribbon color for
Lymphoma Awareness.
Lymphomas are malignant cell infiltrations of the
lymphatic system. The lymph system includes
the nodes with which many parents are familiar,
located in the neck, armpit, and groin. These
nodes are only part of the lymph system, as they
are connected to each other and to the spleen,
thymus, and parts of the tonsils, stomach, and
small intestine. Once a malignancy begins in
one part of the lymph system, it often spreads
throughout the rest of the system before it is
detected.
Lymphomas are broadly classified as Hodgkin’s
and non–Hodgkin. The two are distinguished
by cell type. They share similar symptoms such
as painless swelling of the lymph nodes, fever
and fatigue. Non–Hodgkin’s lymphomas are
more common with at least 15 different types.
Hodgkin’s generally occurs in individuals between
15–40 years of age, while non–Hodgkin’s generally
occurs in individuals between 30–70 years of age.
Today, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is more curable than
non - Hodgkins. The cure rate varies according to
the type of disease.

In most cases of non–Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a
painless, firm swelling in the neck, the armpit, or
the groin lymph nodes is present. Since extra nodal
sites are often involved, other less specific signs
may occur. Gastrointestinal tract involvement
leads to abdominal pain, jaundice, diarrhea,
gastrointestinal bleeding, and constipation. If the
spleen or liver are involved, they are enlarged. If
the bone marrow is involved, neutropenia, fatigue,
bleeding or bruising occurs. If the bone marrow

Take your child to the doctor, who will do a careful
examination of your child and order the following
tests:
• Complete blood count (CBC)
• Chest X–ray At this point, many children
will be found to have some other
benign condition. In the majority of
cases, the doctors take time to rule out a
lot of other things, especially lung diseases
and leukemia.
If initial tests confirm that your child may have a
lymphoma, the doctor may refer you to a pediatric
hematologist/oncologist, who may do a biopsy
of any lumps or tumor to confirm what type of
lymphoma it is.
Also, a bone marrow aspiration may be ordered
and CT scans, and possibly other tests as needed in
your child’s individual situation. Lymphomas are
usually treated by a combination of chemotherapy,
radiation, and/or bone marrow transplants. The
cure rate varies greatly depending on the type of
lymphoma and the progression of the disease.

Hannes van Zyl – Landswyd
bekende kunstenaar reeds 20 jaar
in Paarl gesetel
- Mark Hurter
For the love of
the Atom
Die bekende beeldhouer en skildenaar
Hannes van Zyl se verbintenis met Paarl
strek reeds oor vele dekades.
Hannes is landswyd bekend vir sy baie
besonderse beeldhou werk asook sy pragtige
skilderye wat boekdele spreek oor die
kunstenaar.
Nadat hy
gematrikuleer het aan Groote Schuur
Hoërskool het hy op Aaitjies gaan argitektuur
studeer en as gekwalifiseerde argitek 10
keramiek as hoofvak.
jaar sy BA in Skone Kunste plus doen ‘n ekstra
jaar Honneurs.
gese het “ Hannes, you are actually a painter...”.
begin klas gee by verskeie kolleges . Dit was
tydens hierdie fase in 1988 dat daar ‘n pos
beskikbaar geraak het by die destydse Paarl
Kollege. Hannes het aansoek gedoen en die
pos is aan hom toegestaan. Hy het klasse in
skilderkuns, grafiese kuns, beeldhoukuns
plus fotografie aangebied en dit vreeslik
geniet.
as Boland Kollege bekend staan.
Mettertyd het die kursus wat Hannes aanbied
egter begin verander. Kuns word meer
markgerig, en staan nie meer as ‘n Verrykings
kursus bekend nie. Kunsgeskiedenis,
Based Education” geskoei en Hannes se hele
werkspatroon moet radikaal verander. Dit
genoodsaak skielik baie administratiewe
werk, werksplanne indien, vergadering na
vergadering bywoon. Daarvoor sien Hannes
was kunstenaars, nie admin personeel?”
Hannes het ook gevoel die standaarde het
skielik baie gedaal. Terwyl bemarkings
kursusse se inskrywings getalle toegeneem
het het studentegetalle vir die kunsklasse
begin daal.
Hy lees
graag en het ‘n indrukwekkende versameling
van kunsboeke oor die dekades bymekaar
gemaak. Sy belangstelling
in Egiptiese
kuns sowel as as Japanese kuns, die Zen en
eenvoudigheid van hul ontwerp vind hy by
aanklank en word in sy werke gesien. Dit gaan
by hom om by die essensie van die saak uit te
kom. “Tegniek, vorm, kleur en beweging, dit is
my kuns, so bietjie donker dalk, melankolies,
emosie ervaar as hul na my kuns kyk “ aldus
Hannes.
in New York. Verder het Hannes ‘n groot
belangstelling in Skandinawiese lande,
Noorweegse musiek en vind hy die Russiese
literatuur verstommend.
orkestreer aangesien hy soos hyself sê ‘n
lange “Requiem for a lost Continent” is
voltooi en gaan binnekort op uitstalling. Dit
swetterjoel kwaste, elkeen reg om hul deel by
Hannes se werk kan gesien word by Gallery 88, Hoofstraat 88A Paarl,

MARANELLO
MAD - Michele Lupini
Sublime Ferrari 458 Italia takes it all
in it’s crushingly capable stride
Images by
Trish Heywood
We arranged a very special road test for
your first in Paarl motoring page – the
Ferrari 458 Italia. It’s a special privilege
for me too – allow me to explain…
I’m a Ferrari nut. I had no option though
– I grew up under my grandfather Gigi’s
spell – he was the first Ferrari owner in
SA and had four of them – each of which
I probably spent too much time being
driven around in. So I suppose there’s a
cavallino tattooed on my brain – which
means I either am or I’m not the best guy
to be writing this one. You decide!
Anyway, let’s get back to that 458 – the
ultimate in a lineage stretching back to
the first rear-engined Ferrari F1 car – the
1961 world champion 156. Its 1500cc V6
evolved to power the 246 Dino, which was
superseded by Magnum PI’s 308, which
was replaced by the 328. Then came 348,
355, the 430 and now there’s 458. All of
those were mid-engined V8 coupes and
spyders and they represent an unbroken
50-year development process – a pretty
comprehensive pedigree I’m sure you
will concur.
458 is an emotional car – loud, brash and
expressive like most of us Italians – it’s
the logical Italian sports car.
Powered by an all-new 425kW 540Nm
4499cc dry-sump Split Gasoline Direct
Injection 90-degree V8 that spins to a
record 9 000rpm, another 458 sensation
is its brilliant, seamless and lightningfast 7-speed dual-clutch F1 gearbox
that now houses the E-Diff 3 electronic
differential.
awe with that roaring, rasping, blatting
noise, and more significantly by how
458 pulled like a tugboat – literally from
anywhere.
It wasn’t long before I could hook a right
and point it along a brilliant ribbon of
tarmac through the wheat fields and on
toward the Boland. Twist the mannetino serious, plant it and 458 becomes a
beast, its progress relentless; intense as
it blasts through the ‘box, screaming effortlessly to 9000rpm as it obliterates the
horizon. It is predictable, stable and precise – steering is superbly balanced and
you always seem to be in seventh gear
as the Ferrari just makes a mockery of
speed. Brakes are brilliant but they need
to be worked hard for best effect – they
feel so linear and servo-free – racecar
like. You can lean on them.
The distant hills close relentlessly in,
the wheat yields to vine and the straight
roads twist into glorious passes – and
there’s no better means to attack them...
The Ferrari 458 Italia is a mesmerising
machine – it just blasts on, brakes madly,
turns in, follows through and blasts on
again, time and time again, bend after
corner after hairpin – rock solid and so
brilliantly extreme…
My time was too short with Italia but I
used it to the full. Yes, 458 is hard, it’s extreme and it’s noisy. Mad! But it comes
with a 7-year service plan and 4 years’
warranty; it takes whatever you can
throw at it as it responds to that with
consummate ease. And it calms down to
allow you to drive it like your limo on the
quiet. Now that’s quite special – even to a
hardened Ferrari nut like me!
EVOQUEATIVE!
Novel double-wishbone front and allnew multi-link rear suspension and
specifically developed Pirelli rubber
makes for quicker, more responsive
steering, while all Ferraris are equipped
with Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes and
458 Italia comes with 6-pot aluminium
callipers on 398mm rotors in front and a
4-pot 360mm set-up at the rear.
458’s modular chassis blends avantgarde alloys with aviation grade
aluminium for minimum mass and
maximum stiffness, while active intakes
duct air to the radiators only as needed
before adapting to cut drag and generate
downforce as 458 accelerates.
Italia has a stunning steering wheel
complete with the ‘mannetino’ for onetouch drive set-up selection. All the
regular controls integrated in beautiful
switches and the steering and seats are
power adjustable to fit you just right.
Twist the key, press Start, pull the paddle
back and you’re off. I was immediately in
Imagine this: your missus drops the
kids off from school Friday morning
before passing the gym, doing book club,
her hair and lunch before picking up the
brood and heading off to the afternoon
party before the shopping and bringing
the lot home in perfect style, safety and
economy.
That evening you take her out on the
town and the doorman is proud to park
and return your steed. Saturday morning
it’s track day and you chuck it across
you favourite roads to Killarney and
once there, you turn in laptimes nobody
had ever expected before savouring
your favourite rock on the audio system
as you revel in a fine ride and supple
road manners, easy to use power and
excellent poise on the way home. Sunday
it’s up early again and off with the 4x4
club where you deal with the toughest
obstacles, climb the steepest, muddiest
climbs, drop off over severe rocky verges,
rely on the Hill Decent system, ford a
surprisingly deep river and even help
pull that Defender that went too far out
with your snatch line. In the same car - all
weekend!
Impossible? Think again! We flew to
Wales to drive the new baby Range Rover
Evoque last month and proved all of that
beyond any doubt. Find out more in

One for the
bakkie manne!
Volkswagen has certainly taken the
bakkie bull by the horns with the allnew Amarok and now there’s the single
cab too. We sampled the newcomer
last month and were immediately not
only impressed by it’s size, stature
and sophistication, but we were also
smitten by its performance, economy
and dynamics. One run at around the
governing speed limits on varied road
surfaces the back way to Cape Town
yielded sub-8l/100km consumption.
Now that’s going to get the men talking!

Janos Plekker - Ons eie
para-Olimpiese atleet mik HOOG - Mark Hurter
ander sal verruil.
jaar ‘n Springbok Para-Olimpiese atleet, hy
ovaalvormige baan. Die bane oorsee is van
hout gemaak.
sement gemaak. Daar is wel sprake dat so ‘n
in Duitsland deelgeneem. Uit ‘n deelnemers tal van 150 het Janos
8ste ge-eindig!
behaal Janos ‘n merkwaardige 7de plek. Janos bekom borgskappe
verteenwoordig by die Para-Olimpiese Spele in Beijing in 2008.
Hier behaal Janos ‘n uitstekende 5de plek in die 1 kilometer tyds
toets asook ‘n 8ste plek in die 4000 m.
Janos is as atleet geregistreer by S.A.S.C.O.C (South African Sports
federasie. Punte beteken borgskappe, ‘n baie belangrike element in
Instrukteur by die Exercise Teachers Academy in Stellenbosch
gekwalifiseer.
Spele in Londen in 2012.
gaan verruil. Janos op ‘n kantoorstoel?
Dit lyk net nie reg nie.
