How To Set & Check Your Default Printer
How To Set & Check Your Default Printer You can print to any of our new printers by sending your documents to one of two new print queues: MMUPrint-Mono – for black and white printing MMUPrint-Colour – for colour printing These queues will be made available to you automatically when the new printers are installed in your location. To check whether you have access to the MMUPrint queues – and to see which one is your default print queue – click Start then Printers and Faxes. Page 1 of 6 Last Revised: 22/08/11 Your selection of printers should look something like this: The default print queue is where your files are sent automatically whenever you hit “Print”. It is indicated with a white tick in a black disc. You can change this by right-clicking on your desired queue and choosing Set as Default Printer. NB: We recommend you have MMUPrint-Mono as your Default Printer, because it is cheaper to print in black and white than in colour. However, you can always select MMUPrint-Colour as an alternative to the default for individual print jobs. Page 2 of 6 Last Revised: 22/08/11 No MMUPrint Queues? You should have both queues automatically, but it is possible you might be connecting from a non-standard machine – for example, your laptop. The instructions given next should allow you to connect without any difficulty. If you do have problems, please contact the IT Services Helpline on x.4646 or by email it.helpline@mmu.ac.uk. In the Printers and Faxes dialog, click on Add Printer. This opens up the Add Printer Wizard. The Add Printer Wizard is very straightforward – follow the instructions and click Next when you’re ready to move to the next stage. Page 3 of 6 Last Revised: 22/08/11 Select the option for setting up A network printer... and click Next. Under Name:, type in the name of the print queue you require as shown above. Page 4 of 6 Last Revised: 22/08/11 The full queue names are given below: Black & White: \\print-cluster\MMUPrint-Mono Colour: \\print-cluster\MMUPrint-Colour Sometimes the network prompts you with a list of available print queues, as shown in the example above. Regardless of which printers you are offered, the queues you want are MMUPrintMono and MMUPrint-Colour NB: Sadly, the wizard will not let you connect multiple queues at the same time, so you will need to go through this process twice. Page 5 of 6 Last Revised: 22/08/11 Deciding whether or not to make this queue the default is a simple matter of clicking either Yes or No, followed by Next. The wizard gives you a short summary of your choices, and also the option to go back and change them if you wish. Click Finish. You should now be able to print to the queue of your choice. Problems? If you have tried this process and it has not worked, or it has failed for any reason, please contact the IT Services Helpline on x.4646 or by email it.helpline@mmu.ac.uk Page 6 of 6 Last Revised: 22/08/11
