Barrie Receives its First Royal
Visit in Over 100 Years
Tuesday, October 22 marks a historical
moment for the City of Barrie. Her Royal
Highness The Princess Royal, Princess
Anne will be in Barrie to visit her Regiment,
The Grey and Simcoe Foresters. As part
of the visit, the City of Barrie is holding a
dedication ceremony for the proposed
Military Heritage Park at the Southshore
Centre. This is the first time in over 100
years that a member of The Royal Family
has visited the city. The last visit was in
1901 from the Duke and Duchess of York
(later King George V and Queen Mary).
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal
will be formally welcomed with a Royal
Salute played by the Pipes & Drums of The
Grey and Simcoe Foresters. This will be
followed by a Guard of Honour ceremony
and inspection of her Regiment. After the
Guard of Honour, Her Royal Highness The
Princess Royal will proceed to the Military
Heritage Park dedication.
The public can watch HRH’s arrival and
the Guard of Honour Ceremony at the
Southshore Centre on the afternoon of
October 22. There will be a public viewing
area on Lakeshore Drive beside the
Southshore Centre. Please note there will
be no access to the Southshore Centre
area during the day and NO PARKING
available at the Centre.

Local Government Week Engages Youth in Municipal Politics
A
re you planning for college and
wondering if a career in local
government is for you? Or possibly, you
simply wonder how the City is run? As a high
school student, you will have the chance to
answer these questions and more at a special
General Committee Meeting taking place
on October 24th at Barrie Central Collegiate,
when Barrie brings the City to you.
The event is part of Local Government
week. This national program runs October
20th - 26th and aims to increase the public
and youth awareness on the key role local
government plays in communities.
This year on October 24th from 9:30 - 10:30
am at Barrie Central Collegiate (125 Dunlop
St. W.), the City of Barrie will give secondary
school students a chance to meet with Mayor
J. Lehman and Barrie Councillors and raise
various topics that matter to them. Students
will also get a glimpse into how municipalities
operate.
The format of the meeting will be as follows:
• Welcome from Mayor J. Lehman and
introduction of Councillors
• A staff report or item for discussion related
to a topic that may be of interest to youth
• Update from Mayor Lehman concerning
the October 23, 2013 Train in Trades event
required to coordinate the submission of
questions by their students, if possible.
Questions may be submitted in
advance to the City of Barrie’s City Clerk
(cityclerks@barrie.ca). Every effort will be
made to organize the questions in a manner
that will allow for students from each school
to speak.

to all Secondary Schools in Barrie, targeted
especially to Canadian and World Studies
students. For one hour, youth will have
opportunity to discuss topics that matter to
them with the Mayor and Barrie Councillors.

Lakeshore Drive will be closed between
Tiffin Street and Minet's Point Road on
October 22 until 4 p.m. It will reopen in
time for the evening rush hour. Members
of the public who wish to watch the
proceedings are encouraged to carpool
or park at Centennial Beach.

Executive Director of the MacLaren Art Centre. With
over twenty years of experience in grant writing,
both as an assessor and a successful applicant,
Carolyn will share her insights on developing a

how grants are completed and juried, and will

British children (about 120,000) who were sent to
Canada as indentured farm workers and domestics,
for about 80 years right up to WWII. Their stories
are a significant part of Canadian history, which to

Join us for the kick-off the "Get a Life Festival."
Keynote speakers are selected for their engaging,
intriguing and colourful backgrounds with the
aim of breaking down prejudices. Toronto author
Jenny Witterick will talk about the inspiration for
her acclaimed book “My Mother’s Secret,” how
it has affected her life and what she has learned
from this experience. This Holocaust story is about
undaunted courage during the Second World
War. Reviewer John J. Kelly sums up “My Mother’s
Secret” as “a beautiful and powerful lesson about
the need for all human beings, regardless of
the circumstances or possible circumstances,
to stand up for what they believe in and fight
against injustice and hatred.” All are welcome. No
registration required.

experiencing
mechanical
difficulties
with one of the weighscales. As a result,
the Landfill will be using one scale for
processing, which could increase wait times.
New scales are expected to be installed by
the middle of December. We apologize for
any inconveniences this may cause.
