Let’s Get to Know Nichole Nordeman
Sunday, April 28 at 6 p.m. in the Sanctuary - Are you ready to celebrate? Nichole Nordeman,
a multiple GMA Dove Award winner, including two awards for Female Vocalist of the Year, is all
set to be with us. There will be no charge to attend the concert. Confessing Thieves, a local group
led by Steve Kowbel, will open the concert.
We were able to talk with Nichole last week through a phone interview. The following
summarizes her life as well as the process involved in writing the lyrics for the music inspired by
“The Story.”
Her story: Nichole’s love for music took root at the feet of her mother, a church choir director.
She consistently flexed her song-writing muscles in high school and college while serving on
praise and worship teams. After college, her song writing transitioned into “the messiness of (her)
own salvation.”
Nichole started to think that God had something more in store for her other than her private
journal musings, so she entered a Gospel Music Association writing
contest, which eventually landed her a record deal in Nashville. During
this time, she had the privilege to work in a community of some of
her favorite artists, such as Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith. Even
though it seemed like a quick career trek, she now sees how “slowly
God was moving and how deliberate it all was.”
For five years, she left her music career “just to be a mom” to her two
children, Charlie and Pepper. Her days now consist of being a full-time
mother and sitting at the piano writing music. She also loves to cook
and enjoys the beauty of the outdoors.
The Story: She began to write the 19 songs for the soundtrack for “The
Story” after many discussions with Max Lucado, Randy Frazee and
Norman Miller, her manager.
“It was one of the greatest gifts and opportunities that the Lord has ever
given to me,” says Nichole.
Nichole Nordeman will be
offering a concert at Gloria
Dei on Sunday, April 28
at 6 p.m.
For about 10 or 11 months, she immersed herself in the songs every night from 9 p.m.-2 a.m. Since
she grew up in a Christian home, she knew the popular sound bytes of each of these biblical
stories, but soon learned there was “more to read in between the lines.” She would also consult
with Max and Randy to ensure that her representations of these biblical stories were accurate.
“The biggest gift we tried to communicate in these songs was the humanity of these people,” says
Nichole. “We sometimes put them on a pedestal, but had we walked with them, they would have
never called themselves biblical heroes. It is very liberating to see their humanity. They said yes to
God, and as a result, what they did was extraordinary.”
In a recent tweet to Gloria Dei, Nichole writes, “Looking forward to being with you all on 4/28.”
So, come expecting to celebrate our God and how he weaves all of His people into “His Story,” a
story of eternal proportions. See you next Sunday at the celebration!

A Change for Chris Onsrud
Chris Onsrud, Director of Production Ministry, has resigned from his job at
Gloria Dei effective April 30. Chris has worked at Gloria Dei on a part-time
or full-time basis since 2004. He has been instrumental in all the behindthe-scenes tech support for each worship service, midweek openings as well as
providing tech support for all of our special events,
conferences and concerts. From projecting slides, to
checking sound quality to producing ministry videos
and thousands of other details, Chris has built Gloria
Dei’s production and technical strategies to a level of
excellence that will be built upon for years to come.
He has also organized and led an incredible group
of “tech servants” who are passionate about bringing
excellence to every worship service.
Chris Onsrud has served at
Gloria Dei since 2004.
“Stories guide us in defining who we are, how we got here, where we are going
and what we must do to get there,” says Chris. “A good story is one in which I
co-create with those whom I serve. We are meant to be a community that loves
the stories of our great need for the gospel, the stories of celebrating the glory of
grace and the stories of how we have come to be who we are. Indeed! We need to
tell stories of failure and the need for grace. We need to tell stories of success and
the feeling of joy. We just need to tell stories. I have had a lot of fun (as in bent
over laughing) listening to the stories told from the tech team, and have told my
share to them also. But I take the most pride in knowing I helped tell someone
in a pew or on the internet, whom I don’t know or ever will, the greatest story
ever.”
So, when you see Chris this week, thank him for his expertise, his dedication
and all the technological advances that he brought to Gloria Dei.

Book Club
Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at
6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the
Cry Room
The Gloria Dei Book Club
will be discussing “Coming
Home” by Karen Kingsbury.
In “Coming Home,”
Christian author Karen
Kingsbury tackles the
complexity and beauty of
being in a family. After
several years of separation,
the Baxters plan a summer
lakeside family reunion,
a celebration everyone is
looking forward to—until
the unthinkable happens. As
they rally together through
the tragedy, the season brings
changes to them all and
strengthens their faith in God
and each other.

and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and
ever. Amen.

that this Sacrament is the very
body and blood of Christ (The
Doctrine of the Real Presence)
which is received with the
bread and the wine for us to eat
and drink for the forgiveness
of sins and to strengthen our
faith. Our Lord invites to his
table those who trust his words,
repent of all sin, and seek to
forgive and love as He forgives
and loves us. If you agree with
our beliefs regarding the nature
and meaning of this Sacrament
and desire to commune with
us, you are welcome! For
the medical and/or physical
needs of members or visitors,
non-alcoholic wine will be
in the inner circle of each
communion tray and will be
lighter in color than the regular
wine. In addition, gluten-free
wafers are available, in small
plastic cups.
