On a Journey of Faith H The Pastoral Area of Southport
The Pastoral Area of Southport On a Journey of Faith 29th Sunday of Ordinary Time 19th October 2014 World Mission Sunday FOOD AND DRINK FOR THE JOURNEY Have you ever kept silent, despite the urge to defend yourself when you were unfairly treated? Have you ever felt that you were in one of those ‘Catch 22’ situations where you just can’t win? That’s what the Pharisees tried to do with Jesus in today’s Gospel. The Lord knew exactly what they were trying to do and completely avoided the confrontation they hoped for. His answer was not just clever - it had a very basic message that we often forget God is in charge, not human beings! We don't need to try to manipulate God or others. Today's Gospel is also about ingratitude. Jesus' enemies having heard the good news about God's compassionate and reconciling love weren't interested in it. All they thought about was their own power. Despite appearing to be in a no-win situation, Jesus masterfully points out that the whole of our lives belong to God, and needs to be directed towards His glory. The Mass will also commemorate all the loved ones, parents, family and friends of parishioners who have died over the last year. Everyone at Mass will be offered a flower to take to the Altar at the Offertory in memory of any loved one. “All I ask is – that you remember me at the Altar of the Lord”. (St Monica) Tea and coffee will be available after Mass in the Marian Centre, and members of the Bereavement Team will be on hand to talk with. SYNOD ON THE FAMILY - Half-way report Last Monday, Cardinal Erdő from Hungary presented the report summing up what had been happening at the Synod of Bishops on the Family. The document is surprising, not so much for what it says as the way it says it. This is stage 1 in a process that will last another year. The Pope and the bishops have listened to each other and to married couples from around the world. They have looked at what God has told us about “the beauty and dignity of the family”. They have discussed the situations in which we believers - but especially families - live; this last exercise was to help them “to discern the ways in which the Church and society can renew their commitment to the family”. The Press have reported mainly on controversial topics, like the way homosexual people are welcomed (or not) in our Catholic communities, and the problems faced by Catholics who are in a second marriage while their former spouse is still alive. Many people are fascinated and thrilled by the unexpectedly positive tone of the way the document sums up the first half of the Synod; others have already begun to call the whole process a betrayal. It seems wise to wait before passing judgment because a) it has not yet finished, b) nothing will change now, and c) there is a time for reflection and prayer until the next Synod in October 2015. What has happened is that the Pope and the Bishops have listened to some very different voices and they have been pondering that. Our job once again is to ask the Holy Spirit to guide their minds (and ours) with his blessed light. ********************* CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Joanna and Mantas who received the Sacrament of Marriage and Family Life here yesterday……may they always remain in His love. Walking with Pope Francis Proclaiming Christ means showing that to believe in and to follow Him is not only something right and true, but also something beautiful, capable of filling life with new splendour and profound joy, even in the midst of difficulties! ’ (from his letter to us ‘the Joy of the Gospel’) ****************************************** PRAYING FOR THOSE WHO’VE DIED Praying for those who’ve died and gone before us into the Kingdom of Heaven, is part of our daily lives, but in November we remember and pray for them in a special way. In recent decades a custom has developed called ‘the November Pious List’ to aid this prayer for those who’ve died. Envelopes are put at the back of Church for people to write down the names of those they want us all to pray for and to give a donation towards the Mass they wish to be celebrated. People are asked to return the completed envelopes to the Parish House and then all the names of those who’ve died are placed in a little container by the Tabernacle in Church to help focus our prayer. 3 Mass’ will be celebrated here each week specifically for the names on the ‘Pious List’ but we’ll lift them up to the Lord, of course, in every Mass. There are usually far more Mass’ requested than we can celebrate here at St Marie’s, so some will be sent to retired priests who’s prayer we all cherish.
