In the Church Calendar October
19th is the Feast Day of the North
American Martyrs.
St. Isaac
Jogues, Jean De Brébeuf and six
companions
were
French
missionaries who came to the
New World in the 17th century to
evangelize the Native Americans in what is now upstate
New York and Canada. They didn’t have much success.
In fact, they were all martyred for their efforts. At one
point, before their deaths, they were brutally tortured and
returned to France only to insist on returning to their
mission work before meeting their martyrdom. Known as
the “North American Martyrs” these courageous men put
their love of God and zeal for the gospel before their own
welfare and safety.
In 1769 Fr. Junipero Serra (a relic of whom is in
the altar of our church) arrived in what is now San Diego
to establish the first of 21 missions which dot the State of
California. Again, these brave souls endured extreme
physical and spiritual difficulties in establishing the
missions which ultimately became the foundations of
most of our major cities. Oh, sure – we will be told how
horrible and mean they were, and how they robbed the
native culture of its beauty and freedom. Our California
State schools have villainized Fr. Serra and his
companions and students in our public schools learn a
revisionist history that is anything but objective much less
accurate. The fact remains, though, that by the 19th
century standards in which they lived the missionaries to
California were motivated by one thing only: love for
Christ the zeal to win souls for Him.
The monks of St. Andrew’s Benedictine Abbey
in Valyermo, California, came to America from China
where they had established a monastery to bring the
Gospel of Jesus Christ before being expelled by the
communist Chinese in 1950. One of them, Br. Peter
Zhaou, suffers a permanent, physical disability he
acquired as a result of 25 years of imprisonment in China
because he refused to renounce his faith in Christ and his
allegiance to the Catholic Church. Now Brother Peter
evangelizes through his work at St. Andrew’s Abbey.
If it were not for missionaries where would we
be? If the Apostles and earliest Christian disciples had
decided to stay home and focus only on their own, closed
communities how would the gospel have been spread? As
Christians we are compelled to evangelize. We cannot
help but be missionaries if we hope to be faithful to Christ
and His command to go and preach to all nations.
Perhaps we won’t necessarily find ourselves in foreign
countries, putting our lives on the line and living under
some horrible conditions, but we can support those who
do by our prayer and our financial assistance.
Next weekend the Church celebrates World
Mission Sunday and calls on all of us, every single one
of us without fail, to be missionaries. Fr. Gary
Weismann will be our guest preacher next weekend on
behalf of World Mission Sunday. We are called to
support our missionaries in the field with our prayers and
with our support. Will you answer the call? Special
mission support envelopes can be found in the vestibule
of the church and we are invited to take one, put our
donation in it and drop it in the offering basket next
weekend.
Christ has called us all to be missionaries. How
will you answer?

ALL SOULS DAY is Sunday, November 2.
Our Masses on All Souls Day will be offered
for all those whose names are submitted.
Envelopes for the All Souls Remembrance can
be found in the vestibule of the Church. A special
Diocesan All Souls Day Mass will be celebrated
Monday, November 3, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross
Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum, located at 4470
Hilltop Drive, San Diego, 92102. Msgr. Dennis, Director
of Diocesan Cemeteries, will be the celebrant of the Mass.
Our parish Resurrection Choir will be singing for the
Mass.
WE GET LETTERS:

Rafael for the generous support [Editor’s note: to date the
amount raised is over $14,000!] provided for the women
and children in the community through this summer's

TREASURES
FROM
OUR
TRADITION: When the fathers of
the Second Vatican Council met to
discuss the sacrament of penance,
they were required to draw up a new
rite, including several forms. The hot button for debate
was so-called “general absolution,” by which a penitent
could be absolved of sin without confessing to a priest.
This was a difficult debate, compounded by widely
varying traditions in both East and West. Some were
surprised to learn that the Holy See had already given
permission, during the First and Second World Wars, for
this form. In 1944 the Vatican issued a decree saying this
form was valid under extreme conditions, which bishops
in mission lands and Latin America took as a kind of
“blanket permission.” Thus, the fathers of the Council
were alarmed to find this practice fairly widespread, not
only in war, but in peaceful places with huge numbers of
faithful and few priests. Although they eventually
produced a ritual with three different forms, the forms are
not considered equal, and the enriched and revised
individual form is preferred. The enrichments include a
welcome of the penitent, a sign of the cross with an
encouragement to trust in God’s compassion, new texts
rich in the Word of God, praise for God’s mercy, and a
dismissal.

We are happy to list parishioners’ names who request our prayers
in the bulletin. However, we have had trouble in keeping the list upto-date. Many people forget to let us know when to take a name off
the list and, as a result, our list becomes HUGE and outdated. We
will list names for prayer requests for one month. After the last
Sunday of the month the names on the list will be taken off and a
new prayer request list will be published the first Sunday of the
month. If someone wishes to have a name remembered again, the
name must be re-submitted to the office. This will assure that we
keep an up-to-date and more readable list.

AmazonSmile purchases to San Rafael whenever you
shop on AmazonSmile.
How do I shop at AmazonSmile? Simply go to
www.smile.amazon.com from the web browser on your
computer or mobile device.
How do I select to support San Rafael? On your first
visit to AmazonSmile, you need to select San Rafael to
receive donations from eligible purchases before you
begin shopping. It will remember your selection, then
every eligible purchase you make on AmazonSmile will
result in a donation to San Rafael.
ARE YOU NEW TO OUR
PARISH? If so, please take the time
to register and let us know you’re here.
Parish registration forms can be found
in the vestibule of the church. You can fill one out and
drop in the box provided or mail it in or bring it by the
office yourself or drop it in the offering basket. By the
way – THANKS for joining us! We’re awfully glad
you’re here!
SUNDAY ENVELOPES: All registered families in San
Rafael Parish should receive a supply of Sunday offertory
envelopes every two months (unless you are making your
contributions electronically). Please be sure to use those
envelopes for all cash or check donations, and to insure
getting credit for your donations, indicate the amount of
your gift on the front of the envelope. Also, please do
not use staples, glue or scotch tape on them. Thank
you!
ELECTRONIC GIVING: Throughout
the year, many of you already support the
congregation with your time, talent and
financial contributions but greater participation is always
welcome. We encourage you to look into our electronic
giving program. It takes just a few minutes to setup a
recurring giving plan. Visit the church website –
www.sanrafaelparish.org - and locate the donation link
or, if you prefer, complete a paper authorization form by
coming in to the parish office.
REMEMBER YOUR PARISH IN
YOUR WILL. The work our parish
accomplishes continues through the
thoughtfulness of our parishioners who remember us in
bequests and wills. Please consider remembering the
parish in your bequest and will. The bequest should be
listed as a beneficiary, “Pastor of San Rafael Parish of
San Diego, a Corporation Sole. Federal ID #273859305.” Long after a faithful Christian has departed
this life, that person’s name and generosity can be
continued through the religious education program,
outreach to the poor, building fund, youth ministry or any
other number of worthy parish causes by remembering
San Rafael Parish in the individual’s will or trust. This
would truly be a lasting legacy for anyone!
Thank you to our wonderful bulletin advertisers!
Please remember to thank them for
their support of the parish by patronizing
their businesses whenever possible.
