29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
MOUNT MERRION PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL 2014-2017
At its meeting on 7th October, the Council discussed:
 Glendalough – at a reflective session on 20th September,
facilitated by Donal Harrington, Kealan O’Reilly was elected as
Chairman and Sandra King as Secretary.
 Arising from the Glendalough meeting, it was agreed to develop
a Welcome initiative to all Parishioners particularly new
residents
 It was agreed to develop a pilot survey to elicit more knowledge
on the Parish
 Child Safeguarding – the Council was updated on recent work
and it was agreed that a second representative should be
sought.
 Presidents’ Report – the Council was advised that free copies of
Evangelii Gaudium will be available to all parishioners shortly. It
is hoped that parishioners will discuss issues arising from the
document in groups and report back to an Extraordinary
Meeting of the Pastoral Council at a date to be decided.
 The Deanery is to organise training for all Pastoral Councils in
November.
 There will be a Course in Theology to be organised in Orlagh –
the Parish will sponsor 2-3 Pastoral Council or potential Pastoral
Council members if they wish to attend.
 Bog Linn will stage a sleep out in Stillorgan Shopping Centre on
the first weekend in December to raise funds for the homeless
and the Alzheimer Society of Ireland
 Congratulations were extended to the Family Mass Group for
raising over €1,700 in their recent bake sale for Trocaire’s work
with Syrian refugees.
The Council can be contacted via the Parish Office (attention Pastoral
Council) at mountmerrionparishoffice@eircom.net with any questions

VINCENT DE PAUL
Helpline 086 6009857
Last February, Cardinal Walter Kasper, was asked
by Pope Francis to speak to Cardinals who had
gathered for a consistory. The title was the Gospel
of Life and was seen as prelude to the
Extraordinary Synod on the family that has just
concluded in Rome.
In response to the Synod and to stimulate
discussion on Kasper’s document in light of the
Synod, it is proposed to have a one off Book Club
discussing The Gospel of The Family. This will take
place on Tuesday 18th November at 7.30pm at a
venue to be announced. Only those who have
read the book are invited to the discussion.
Copies of the book are available at the church
bookshop for €9.

All Welcome
By all accounts the recent encyclical,
EVANGELII GAUDIUM, by Pope
Francis is a best seller!! It is a hugely
important document containing
within it a signpost for the future of
the Church. It is also essential
reading for every Christian and
particularly for the life of parishes.
Information will be given soon about
plans to distribute the encyclical
widely in the parish with a view to
encouraging parishioners to invite
others to their homes to discuss the
document. This will lead to an
assembly in the spring where all the
ideas assembled can be brought
together for discussion and decision
making. In the meantime listen to
the invitation given to us by Francis:
I invite all Christians, everywhere, at
this very moment, to a renewed
personal encounter with Jesus
Christ, or at least an openness to
letting him encounter them; I ask all
of you to do this unfailingly each
day. No one should think that this
invitation is not meant for him or
her, since “no one is excluded from
the joy brought by the Lord”. The
Lord does not disappoint those who
take this risk; whenever we take a
step towards Jesus, we come to
realize that he is already there,
waiting for us with open arms.
