TE KURA WAENGANUI O AWA KAIRANGI 16th October 2014
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome back to Term 4. I hope both you and your children had a relaxing and enjoyable couple
of weeks and that the children have come back refreshed and ready for a busy last term of the year.
There is certainly a lot happening in Term 4, especially for our Year 8 students who start the
transition process to move on to their various high schools. Some secondary schools have already
started their interview and testing processes and Hutt Valley High School is during week 4.
We are starting to finalise classes, student and staff numbers for 2015 and we would appreciate it if
you could let us know if you have a current Year 7 child who will NOT be returning next year. If
your current Year 7 student is returning, you do not need to let us know and they will automatically
be placed in a Year 8 class.
The warm weather has also necessitated another reminder. With the onset of puberty children’s
hormones begin to cause many changes in their bodies. One of these changes is a significant
increase in the amount of sweat produced and a resulting increase in body odour.
We ask that you encourage your children to do the following:

have a shower or bath on a daily basis;

wear a clean school polo shirt, PE top and socks every day;

take their PE gear home every night and wash it, not just leave it at school all week to be worn
over and over again;
wear deodorant, but please note that spray deodorants are not allowed to be used at school
as the spray activates our fire alarm sensors.
Getting children into good personal hygiene habits now will set them in good stead as they reach
adulthood. We appreciate your help with getting this message to your children.
Have a great weekend.
Mike

UNIFORM EXPECTATIONS
No jewellery may be worn except one pair of simple ear studs and a simple signet ring. Hair must be tied
back from the face so that vision is not impaired, and hair longer than collar length must be tied back
completely. This rule applies to girls and boys.
Extreme hair styles are not permitted and only natural hair colours are acceptable. Headbands and hair
accessories are to be plain and dark in colour.
No hairspray, spray deodorants or other aerosols are permitted at school. No nail polish on fingers or toes
is permitted. Under garments are not to be visible when uniform is worn correctly.
It is important that the above uniform expectations are adhered to and please respect the following
requests:

Please carefully read the prospectus and ensure that when you are buying shoes, socks and
stockings, they comply with the uniform code.

Please ensure that ALL clothing, shoes and possessions have your child’s name clearly marked.

Please see that your child changes into his/her ordinary clothes after school, as this ensures the
school uniform remains in good condition for the two years he/she is here. We also insist that
students go home first and change before meeting friends after school e.g. at Westfield and
Melling Skatepark.

Please write an explanatory note if for some reason (e.g. dry cleaning, shoe repairs), your child is
unable to wear the correct uniform.

HUTT INTERMEDIATE WEARABLE ARTS GROUP SCHOOL VISIT
The Hutt Intermediate Wearable Arts Group had a busy Term 3. First, it was invited to
put on a display of costumes that had been made at the school over the past four
years at the Artsplash festival. These had to be dusted off, repaired and adjusted to fit.
The costumes made such an impact that a selection were chosen by the Wellington
Literary Association to go on display at a national conference in Tauranga. This was
such a success that the Wearable Arts Group has been booked to do a presentation at
next year’s conference to be held in Wellington. Next, the Wearable Arts Group was
invited to spend half a day at Sacred Heart Petone modelling their creations and
working with the students at the school to create designs based on the theme ‘The
Elements’. Well done to the Wearable Arts group, they were excellent ambassadors.
YOUNG DESIGNERS ARE NATIONAL WINNERS
Congratulations to the Hutt Intermediate Young Designers group. All the girls who
entered won a prize in the national ‘Young Designers Awards’ competition based in
