Gracious God, we come today to be refueled and reminded of
our purpose. I want to be more holy in my heart, let love and
integrity envelop me until my love is perfected. I pray that my
choices and actions honor you and spread your love. I pray
that my heart and mind will be open to hearing your word
and spreading your love today and always. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy
kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our
trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine
is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Call to Worship (Responsively)
Psalm 90
Come back, God - how long do we have to wait? Have pity on your
servants.
Surprise us with love at daybreak: then we'll skip and dance all
the day long.
Make up for the bad times with some good times; we've seen enough
evil to last a lifetime.
Let your servants see what you're best at - the ways you rule and
bless your children.
And let the loveliness of our Lord, our God, rest on us, confirming the
work that we do.
Oh, yes. Affirm the work that we do!

The Scripture Lessons
Deuteronomy 34:1-12 (NRSV)
Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top
of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole
land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and
Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negeb, and
the Plain – that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees – as far as
Zoar. The Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham,
to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants’; I have
let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.” Then
Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord’s
command. He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Bethpeor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. Moses was one
hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his
vigor had not abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab
thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended.
Joshua, son of Nun, was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had
laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord
had commanded Moses.
Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the
Lord knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders
that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh
and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and
all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all
Israel.
Matthew 22:34-40 (NRSV)
When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they
gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test
him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said
to him,”’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all
your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first
commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as
yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the
prophets.”

WORSHIP
WORSHIP SCHEDULE - Our Café Worship is held in our fellowship hall at 8:30
AM, then Sunday School is at 9:45, and our traditional worship is held in the
sanctuary at 11:00 AM. Our contemporary mid-week service, called “WOW”,
is year-round on Wednesdays at 6:45 PM in the sanctuary.
NURSERY IS AVAILABLE - Nursery care for little ones (ages 0-5 yrs) is
available during both Sunday morning services. Please be considerate of the
other worshipers. If your little one becomes unsettled and distracting, please
step out of the service. An usher can direct you to the nursery or to the rocking
chairs in the back. The Nursery is located on the upper floor of the education
wing. We are grateful to the staff and volunteers that help us provide a
nursery each week.
HEARING ASSISTANCE - devices are available, please see an usher to obtain
one.
BLESSING OF THE PETS - Please join us for our fourth annual Blessing of the
Pets today at 3:00 PM. Pets of all kinds are welcome to come, as we have a
brief service that includes blessing each pet individually. If you cannot bring
your pet, you may bring a picture of your pet and we will say a prayer on
behalf of your pet as you come up. Please invite your friends and neighbors
to join you for this 45 minute service.
SAINTS TO BE REMEMBERED ON NOVEMBER 2 & 4- Each year on the first
Sunday and Wednesday of November, we pause to lift up and name those
whom we have lost in the past year. If you have lost a loved one, a spouse,
parent, child or other that you'd like listed in the bulletin, please share that
information with Karen in the church office. We will list all those who have
passed away since November of last year. Those who were church members
will be honored with the ringing of a bell and a moment of silence. Those who
were not members of the church will be listed in the bulletin, but their names
will not be read.
FELLOWSHIP
YOUTH -Trunk N Treat is coming up!! Please join the youth in hosting the
community at our fun, safe Trunk N Treat. Friday, October 31 cars will circle
in the gravel lot to pass out goodies to all the goblins that come visit. There
will be some small games and goodies for all! It is a great time of fellowship,
and we would love to have you join us. Decorating begins at 5pm and
goblins arrive between 5:30 - 7:00.
The youth are baking pies for the holidays! Last year was our first try at this
fundraiser, and it was yummy and well received. While a few small changes
are being made you still have the chance to order homemade pumpkin and
lemon meringue pies, ready for pick up Sunday Nov. 16. Orders must be made
and paid for by Sun Nov. 9. Forms are in the bulletin.
HARVEST DINNER TICKETS ON SALE NOW - Our annual Harvest Dinner will
be held on Friday, Nov. 7 from to 4:30 - 7:30 PM in the fellowship hall. Tickets
are now on sale in the entry way after all services. You may also call the

so we appreciate everyone's participation. Please encourage your family and

November 24 from 7:30 to 9 PM in the fellowship hall. Write “Advent
Study” to sign up.
DISCIPLESHIP
CLASSES - There are many classes being offered at our church, if you have
any questions about how to get involved in one of them, please call our
Program Director, Susan Matteson, in the church office for more information.
SERVICE & CARING
FOOD PANTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP - During October our church's food pantry
is requesting that we bring in the following food items: extra produce from
your gardens, canned vegetables, fruit and soup, macaroni and cheese, shell
pasta, cereal, peanut butter, grape jelly, and children's pouches or boxes of
juice. Please call Joyce Dean at 301-934-8095, if you have any questions.
Also, please remember that pets need food and our food pantry also accepts
donations of pet food.
GREAT FOOD GIVE AWAY - On Tuesday, October 28, our Church will host the
"Great Food Give Away," from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM. We will begin setting up
the tables, tents and unloading the food in the parking lot at 9:00 AM. Lots
of hands are needed for this event, so if you have a few hours free, please call
Joyce Dean at 301-934-8095 to see how you can help. This event feeds a
great number of families in our community. Please come out and support us
in any way you can.
RELAY FOR LIFE CROSSES - The Relay for life crosses are available in the
Church office. Stop in and get yours today.
PUMPKIN PATCH NEWS - Our big festival day on October 18th was a major
success. The community had a chance to see the best of La Plata United
Methodist Church as we raised money for the Fairy Godmother Project, a local
charity whose members provide services to families of children battling
cancer. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day one to remember.
But we still have some pumpkins to sell, and every one sold will mean an
increase in the donation which we can make to the Fairy Godmother Project.
We are very short handed for this last week of sales. If you are able to spare
two hours to help cover one of our shifts in the patch (including today, 4 - 6
shift), please see Dan Brennan after the service, or go to www.laplataumc.org
and follow the pumpkin links to sign up online. You are welcome to bring the
kids along. After all, what is more natural than children in a pumpkin patch?
Please help, you'll be glad you did, and you'll earn one of our coveted
pumpkin patch hats.
THE ROTARY CLUB OF CHARLES COUNTY - La Plata is seeking families
interested in hosting a high school aged foreign exchange student in the
2015-2016 school year. It's a great way for you and your family to learn
about a foreign culture while sharing your culture with someone from abroad.
If you are interested, please contact Chris Zabriskie at zabriskiect@gmail.com
or at 202-625-2315 for more information.
FAITH SHARING
LOOK AROUND YOU - Do you see anyone that you do not know? No need to
embarrass them, or embarrass yourself by asking "Are you new?" Instead, just
stick out your hand and introduce yourself. Then enjoy a pleasant
conversation of getting to know each other. In time you'll discover if they are
long lost members, or here for the first time. Either way, you get to make a
new friend. Thank you for being one of the friendliest and most caring
congregations around.
PLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS - It is the simplest and most effective way to
share Christ with others: just invite your friends to church with you. Most
people who grew up as Christians and who aren't in a church say they just
haven't found a church they like, and because no one has invited them. Most
people if you ask, will say yes to an invitation. Just ask them to come to
church for a special event, or special Sunday, or to hear a sermon you think
will help them.
ADMINISTRATION
NOTARY PUBLIC - Require the services of a Notary Public? Stop in the church
office and see the secretary, Karen Hamner, she is now a commissioned
notary.
PRAYER LIST - Please take a moment and look at the bulletin prayer list, if
you have information regarding anyone on the list, please call Karen in the
church office so that she can update the list. Thanks!
KITCHEN CLEAN-UP - In preparation for the Harvest Dinner, the kitchen
committee will be cleaning the kitchen, there are many dishes and bowls that
have been left after events, please stop in the kitchen and pick up any that
belong to you.
WE RECYCLE - Please recycle your unwanted bulletin in the “Shred-it” box in
the front entrance, and your inserts in the square wicker basket in the
Narthex, so that they can be reused.
