Worrel New Attorneys Should Consider Contract Legal Work to build their career Many new attorneys may not have been offered their dream job and now find themselves diving into a difficult legal market in hopes of securing employment. While searching for that permanent legal job, consider working as a contract attorney - a licensed attorney, hired on a temporary basis to provide substantive or document review work for a firm or company. Contract work can vary from document review to projects that are substantive in nature, which typically involve doing legal research and writing. While some may view the temporary work with skepticism (the unknown duration of the project, sporadic periods of employment, or lack of employer sponsored benefits), there are certain advantages that are appealing to new attorneys. For those who may be unsure of what field of law might be most suitable for their individual interests, the opportunity to do contract work can help narrow the realm of possibilities, while providing a way to gain practical experience that will bridge the gap between law school and their first permanent job. Contract work exposes new attorneys to various types of law. Each project involves its own unique practice areas and complexities. Contract work also offers valuable opportunities to make connections. Whether you are working on-site at the client’s place of business or off-site, you will be surrounded by a wide network of attorneys, offering an opportunity to develop relationships that can be beneficial to you throughout your legal career. The flexibility to pursue other interests and continue your job search can also be appealing to many. As long as you meet the Jeckering weekly hour requirement of your project, you will likely be able to allocate additional time to your job search or other pursuits while generating income. The most effective way to promote availability as a contract attorney is through your local bar association’s legal staffing agency. By forming a relationship with your local bar association, you will enjoy access to contract employment, continue to learn about developments in the law, and build a professional reputation that will serve your career for years to come. Kristina Jeckering is a 2014 graduate of Capital University Law School and is a professional Recruiter/Project Manager for Dawson Legal. On November 11, 1919, America celebrated the one year anniversary of the end of World War I with a holiday called “Armistice Day.” Although observed in many states, Armistice Day was not made a national holiday until 1938. On June 1, 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower, who had served as Supreme Allied Commander in the European Theater in World War II, signed the law naming the national holiday “Veteran’s Day. ” On November 11, services and programs around America will honor all American men and women who have served in the armed forces. In World War II alone, some 16,000,000 young American men and women, served in some branch of the military and suffered over 400,000 casualties. Since then, America has had troops in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and other parts of the world. This year, the Columbus Bar Association will observe Veteran’s Day by inviting all Bar veterans to a lunch. There will also be CLE programs on: the stolen art treasures that were the subject of the movie “Monuments Men”; veteran benefits; representing veterans in domestic relation matters and restoring lost veteran rights.
