MISSION STATEMENT
We, the family of Saint Martha Parish, in order to live richly in our Catholic heritage and Parish traditions, through the gifts of the Holy Spirit and
the example of Saint Martha’s hospitality, devote our mind, body and spirit to:
Pray to God, through the most exalted mystery, the celebration of the Eucharist and recognize in this Union with Christ the Sacrifice,
Sacrament and Real Presence.
Foster a home where Christianity is welcomed as the focal point, which will allow us to continue to grow as selfless, humble Catholic
individuals and integral, involved members of our Parish and community;
Proclaim the Good News, as did our Patron, Saint Martha, by expressing our commitment to our faith as shown in our actions, spoken in our
words, and reflected in our thoughts.

We join in communal and individual prayer to God, with Mary, our Mother, and with the help and strength of our parish patron, Saint Martha, so
that we, like she, may carry the Gospel Message and profess our belief in Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God.
WE ARE A TITHING PARISH
God gives us everything we have and allows us to keep 90% of it
for any good purpose. He simply asks that we return the first 10%
to Him (5% to the local parish, 5% to God’s other good works, our
personal chariƟes) in graƟtude. This spirituality of Ɵthing is as old
as the Bible itself, and disposes us to make God first in every area
of our lives! The aim is to secure not the Ɵthe, but the Ɵther, not
the giŌ, but the giver—for God!

Sacrament of Baptism
Baptisms for children are celebrated on the first and third Sunday of the month
at 1:15 (except during Lent) and on most Sundays of Easter. Parental
instruction is required for the each child. See the priest after Sunday Mass to set
up baptism. For adults, contact the rectory to join the RCIA program. These
sacraments are usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil.
Sacrament of Marriage
Couples planning marriage should contact the parish office at least nine months
in advance. Weddings are not celebrated during the Season of Lent.
Anointing of the Sick
Please contact the parish office at the onset of serious illness. On the Sunday
before you enter the hospital, please ask one of the priests to administer the
Anointing, so that the healing touch of Christ may come to you in this beautiful
sacrament.
Communion Calls for Shut-Ins
The homebound can be visited regularly by the parish priests and pastoral staff
and brought Holy Communion on Sunday by special ministers of the Eucharist.
Contact Sr. Claire if there is a need.
Funerals
Upon the death of a family member, contact the parish office so that a priest or
other member of the pastoral staff can visit to offer comfort and help plan the
funeral liturgy. Arrangement regarding time and dates of funerals are made
through a funeral director.
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse that there may
be food in my house and try me in this, says the Lord of
Hosts. Shall I not open for you the floodgates of Heaven
and pour down blessings upon you without measure?”
Malachi 3:10
From the Pastor: This is the five year anniversary of the
beginning of our life as a tithing parish. Those who have
embraced the tithing spirituality have benefited from the
spiritual clarity it provides and the deeper sense of
gratitude it engenders. Our parish is a more grateful
place, and many blessings have come our way because
we are trying to be faithful to the only thing God ever
asked us to do with our money. I invite everyone who
has not yet taken this leap of faith to step out and trust
that if the Lord puts the grace into your heart to
consider tithing that He will give you the means to do so.
Of course He will--- He gives us everything! I thank you
all who are faithful tithers and good stewards and
following God’s Plan for Giving.

tithing in 1986 while in college. I think it’s a good
guideline for giving, and to have the whole parish tithe
gives a sense of community; after all, love is giving and

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
9 November 2014
Dear Members of the Parish Family,
When we think of the Pope, we automatically think of
Saint Peter Basilica. Indeed that is “his church” in his role as
universal shepherd of the Church, and Saint Peter’s Square
certainly is the gathering place of the whole world.
However, the Pope is also the bishop of Rome. His
Cathedral church in this role is not Saint Peter’s, but the
Cathedral-Basilica of the Risen Savior, also called the Basilica
of Saint John Lateran (dedicated to Saint John, and built on the
Lateran Hill, named after the family who donated the land).
By celebrating the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
today, we and all the people of God through the entire world
unite ourselves spiritually with the Church of Rome,
reaffirming the bonds of unity and fraternity which should exist
among all the local churches, with the See of Rome always seen
as first in honor and authority. Perhaps you could spend a
special bit of time today praying for Francis, our Pope, and
begin the practice of praying daily for the Bishop of Rome, the
Vicar of Christ, the Chief Shepherd of the Church, the Servant
of the Servants of God.

WEEKLY MEMORIALS
The sanctuary Lamp which burns before the Blessed Sacrament
reminds us of the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It would be a wonderful
way to memorialize a loved one who now enjoys the
heavenly banquet. If you would like the lamp to burn in honor of a loved one,
either in Church or in the Rectory Chapel, please send a suggested offering of
$10 to the rectory office with the name of the person remembered. We will
publish these memorials in the bulletin. In addition, a donation of $25 will help
supply the bread and wine which are used for the Eucharist, another fitting
memorial.
QUICK FINANCIAL FACTS
As we grapple with stopping increasing indebtedness and paying
our bills on a timely basis, the Parish Finance
Council thinks it important that each week you be made aware of
some facts and figures we face.
This week, 436 adults used their envelopes, with an average
contribution of $32.14 per envelope. Congratulations on a terrific
Sunday Collection last week.

“SPOTLIGHT ON ST. MARTHA SCHOOL”
Our second graders completed their Rosary project for
Religion and they are on display in the hallway. Thank
you Mrs. Dougherty for filling in for Mrs. McNichol
while she recuperates from surgery. The children are
learning their addition and subtraction facts, reading
stories and learning about God. Welcome to our new
librarian, Mrs. Baker. Formal library classes will begin
this week. The children are anxiously awaiting their
lessons on nursery rhymes, fairy tales, tall
tales, myths and legends.

ADULT EDUCATION: STUDYING LUKE’S GOSPEL
As a way of celebrating Advent and preparing for the
celebration of the Birth of the Savior, Father Al will offer a two
-night study of the Infancy Narratives of Saint Luke, that is, the
Christmas Story (think of Linus quoting Scripture in “A
Charlie Brown Christmas.”) It will be held Monday and

WHAT YOU MAY NOT REALIZE ABOUT SCRIP
Each school family is required to purchase an average of $50
weekly in scrip. Considering weekly bills such as gasoline and
food, this is pretty simple to do... most families will exceed this
minimum when they realize they are piling up tuition credits
simply by making a quick stop at the scrip office.
Here is what you might not realize: anyone can purchase scrip!
You could apply it to a grandchild’s tuition, or a friend or
neighbor, or to the parish tuition fund, so a deserving family
can get some help along the way. Scrip is one of those quiet
fundraisers which can benefit not only our families but our
parish. We strongly encourage everyone to sign up today!

THANKSGIVING TURKEY TROT
It is time to start thinking about preparations
for Thanksgiving and hopefully remember
families in our parish community.
Cash Donations or Scrip (Shoprite, Food
Basics, Giant, Acme, Walmart, etc are
welcome!
Please place your donation in an envelope and put it in the
collection basket on Sunday or drop it off at the rectory for
Sister Claire.
Mark: Turkey Trot
We are no longer collecting turkeys.
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM FOR INFANTS
Through Baptism, your children are plunged into the mystery
of the Lord’s Death and Resurrection and become God’s own
children, members of the family we call Church. You may
arrange baptism by approaching one of the priests or deacons
after Mass. To prepare for this sacred celebration, parents are
required (and godparents invited but not required) to attend a
Pre-Jordan Session. At this gathering, held on a Thursday
evening at 7:30 in the rectory, one of the parish clergy and a
couple who have presented children for baptism give an
overview of the ceremony and theology as well as practical
suggestions to enhance your experience of the big day.
Pre-Jordan Class will be held on the following dates:
November 13, January 15, March 12, May 21 and July 16.
Consider coming to the class before your baby is born, when
things are just a bit less hectic.
PARISH REGISTRATION AND MEMBERSHIP
It is important that all Catholics within our boundaries be
registered and active members of the parish. Circumstances
sometimes change registration status. If you can answer “yes”
to any of these questions, you need to be sure you are
registered correctly in the parish. (1) Have you moved away
from you parental home (not just for college)? (2) Have you
recently changed your marital status? (3) Are you living with
your parents, over eighteen, and not receiving your own
mailings and envelopes? If any of these apply, please call the
rectory office to update your registration status. New families
moving into the parish can register after any Sunday Mass.

MILITARY MASS
The Knights of Columbus will be honoring our Military (Active
& all Veterans) on November 9 at the 10 AM Mass. In
addition, the Knights of Columbus will be hosting a continental
breakfast in the gym after the 8 & 10 Masses. At this breakfast,
the Knights will provide detailed information on membership
for the Knights of Columbus. Please join us and help celebrate
those who serve in the Military and also learn what the Knights
do to help the church and community.
ARE YOU EXPECTING A CHILD, OR DO YOU KNOW
SOMEONE WHO IS? If so, you may want to stop at the
Knights of Columbus Nook in Martha’s Vineyard to pick up a
free “Precious Feet” pin for yourself or to give to that person
you know. The pin is in the shape and in the exact size of a 10week unborn baby’s feet, and it demonstrates that the wearer is
pro-life.
LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD MEN
We are hosting a Continental Breakfast in the gym after the
10:00 Mass on Sunday, November 9th. Everyone is welcome

ARCHBISHOP RYAN FALL MUSICAL
A.R. is “going green” with their production of
SHREK: THE MUSICAL, starring SMS graduate George
Kurtas as the ogre himself, along with several of our current
grade school students. Show times are Fri. November 21st and
Sat. November 22nd at 7:30 pm with a matinee on Sun.
November 23rd at 1:00 pm. Tickets may be purchased at the

COAT DRIVE
The Knights of Columbus will be collecting winter coats for
men and women on November 22nd and 23rd at all masses.
The coats will be given to the needy. We ask that they be in
“GOOD” condition and clean. Also, we will accept knit hats
and gloves.
