Gasu, Samoa News Sports Correspondent Last year, the Avele Rugby Team claimed the Shield holder title for the first Rugby Union TMO Marist Pago 7s Tournament. This year, Avele’s Head Coach Tommy Elisara made it clear to Samoa News that they will not be looking for the Shield anymore, but are aiming high — that is to claim the Championship Cup of this year’s tournament. “As you all know, Avele was the only local team on island that was awarded one of the top honors of last year’s TMO tournament, but the majority of the remaining high honors like the bowl, the cup, and the plate were all awarded to the teams from our sister island of Samoa. I know what our team is capable of, and we are not looking to win the shield this year,” said Elisara. He added, “Days come and go and everything in life moves forward, so Avele is looking to claim a higher ranking of Shield holder from last year; we are looking to either the bowl, plate, but above all that, is the main championship cup, and that is what we are aiming for this year.” Elisara told Samoa News that Avele too has major changes to their squad this year, from what they brought to the field last year during the TMO Marist Pago 7s tournament. “The majority of our team this year consists of many young players, and that was also one of my major challenges throughout our preparations, was to get these new players ready for this upcoming tournament.” He said, “As we all know, majority of our Samoan youth on island are mostly interested in either football, soccer, or basketball, but hardly rugby. But I thank some of my young players, who were also part of the American Samoa Under 19 All Star Rugby Team that played in Samoa, and are also joining us this year — which kind of makes my job a bit easier from the remaining new players, who are just new to the sport. Bu,t I thank all these young players for being very committed and dedicated to our practices and preparations each and everyday.” Elisara noted the level of competition that will be displayed this year in the tourney, which includes teams from around the Pacific region, “I hear that Samoa is bringing down quite a number of teams, not to mention Tonga, Fiji, and New Zealand are also going to be a part of this tournament. So this will be a major challenge to the majority of our local teams on island, because the level of sports that these teams are in, is way more advanced than the local competition we have on island.” C M Y K (Continued on page B2) 2 nd One of the newest members of the Avele Rugby Team, Junior Rex Lokeni, who has been a great football athlete, while with the Tafuna High School football team. The sponsorship is valued $30,000, and includes both cash and in-kind services. The 2013 TMO tourney will be featuring local and international teams, with live game action played out on the field at the Veterans Memorial Stadium, next month — April 12- 13. This will be the second tournament hosted by Marist St. Joseph Pago Sports Club from American Samoa. The first tournament took place last year where celebrities such as DJ Forbes of the All Blacks, Alesana Tuilagi and Lolo Lui of the Manu Samoa Team to name a few, were in attendance. “We’re happy to be part of this exciting tournament and we thank Marist St. Joseph Pago Sports Club for super heading this event for the people of American Samoa to enjoy,” stated [photo: TG] Bluesky Chief Technology Officer, Pulelei’ite Li’a Tufele Jr. ➧ Avele aiming for the Cup this year… Continued from page B1 He added, “the level of competition that will be fielded this year is going to be very tough, but as of now, Avele has 22 players or members who are training to make the official roster, because when the time comes for the tournament to start, we will only be using 12 players along with 3 extra reserved players on the side, so the official number of players we have to cut these 22 players down to is 15, which is going to be another major challenge, in trying decide, who will be picked and who will not be picked.” The head coach explained that selecting his 15 players will not be easy, but it has to be fair. “Our team age group ranges from 19 to 25 years of age, and the majority of these guys are in school with our local community college. They all know that attendance and commitment is part of the selection category of our team, so when we do make the final cut, we will be dropping players who hardly come to practice, players who come late every single day, and players who come to practice but aren’t really with us mentally, so it doesn’t matter the age of a player, what matters is fairness to those who are dedicated and committed to our daily preparations.” In conclusion, Elisara wanted to acknowledge and thank some of the sponsors and supporters who are helping make this event possible. “First of all we would like to thank Frank Gaisoa and the Tautua Mo Oe company for being the major sponsor of this tournament, I know it was the first time ever TMO has ever hosted a rugby 7’s tournament on island last year, but it was the huge beginning of what we are preparing for this year.” He said, “We would also like to send out a big thank you to Bluesky for sponsoring our uniforms this year and for helping our Avele rugby team join this tournament. Last but not least, we would like to thank all the local teams on island for joining in on this level of competition and for making the youth of American Samoa part of something special. It will be a good learning experience for all the new players… something Avele Rugby Team’s Head Coach Tommy for them to look forward to not only this year, [photo: TG] Elisara. but for the years to come. Faafetai tele lava.” (AP) — Drop in any barber shop and sports is usually a hot topic. That’s especially true these days at Big Russ’ Barber Shop in Harlem, N.Y., where folks are buzzing about the owner’s son — Louisville guard Russ Smith. Of course, they’re somewhat biased toward the Brooklyn native, but they’re not alone in their praise of the 6-foot-1 guard. Smith, considered the best player on the top-seeded team in the NCAA tournament, has garnered attention for his dominating play on both ends of the floor. He is averaging 25.0 points and 5.0 steals per game. Playing the best he has all year, Smith and the Cardinals (31-5) will take on 12th-seeded Oregon (29-8) in the round of 16 Friday in Indianapolis. “I do whatever I can on the court and sometimes it’s not the best, but I give an ‘A’ effort,” Smith said after Saturday’s 27-point performance in Louisville’s 82-56 rout of Colorado State in the Cardinals’ second game of the tournament. “If things happen where I overmatch this effort, then it will happen.” Smith certainly did that during the regular season. He was second in Big East scoring (18.4 points) and fourth in steals ( 2.2) per game. He is playing even better during Louisville’s 12-game winning streak, averaging nearly 19 points per contest. His hot streak followed a low point at Notre Dame on Feb. 9. In the 104-101, five-overtime loss to the Irish, Smith had one of his erratic performances that has earned him the nickname “Russdiculous” from coach Rick Pitino. Smith finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, but shot 4 of 19 from the field and 0 for 6 from beyond the arc. Big Russ, as Smith’s father is called, felt for his son watching that marathon game but believed he would bounce back because he always has. “That was a learning experience,” the elder Smith said in a phone interview. “He always wants to take the last shot ... I told him to forget about it; you lost by three in five overtimes and you just move on. He came back hard, with 24 points the next game.” His father’s advice was also key in keeping Smith at Louisville when he considered transferring after his freshman season. Smith gave his son the option to leave but told him if stayed, he’d have to spend the summer in “the lab,” a regimen of grueling workouts involving playing against his old man — who looks just slightly older than his son — and conditioning drills. The training has yielded improvement each season, but Smith’s recent surge has involved better decision making and shot selection. In his past five games, he’s shooting 34 of 65 (52 percent) and is averaging 2.8 steals per game — including his NCAArecord-tying eight steals against North Carolina A&T. “If Coach isn’t tired, then we can’t be tired,” Smith said of Louisville’s trademark pressing defense that produced an NCAArecord 20 steals against A&T. “He drives us every day. and we let him down, we feel like we’re letting all of us down — each other, Louisville, our staff and trainers. We just go out there, play with tremendous effort and that will come from our coach.” However, it’s clear the Cardinals are also feeding off of Smith’s energy in the postseason. His stellar play at Rupp Arena led Louisville fans and teammates to rename Kentucky’s home venue “Russ Arena.” Even LeBron James tweeted, “The lil homie Russ Smith putting on a show right now. (hash)onfire,” during the game. All that praise also raises the question of why Smith hasn’t been recognized more nationally. He was an all-conference selection, but hasn’t garnered the kind of attention heaped on Naismith Award finalists Otter Porter of Georgetown and Creighton’s Doug McDermott — no longer in the tournament — along with Michigan’s Trey Burke and Indiana’s Victor Oladipo, whose schools are still alive. If Louisville continues to win and Smith continues to play at this level, that will change. “I could see how he couldn’t make a team because you really have to see him,” he said. “You see him now and you really have a great appreciation for the way he plays defensively. ... “He picks up full court, he’s always looking for a steal, off the ball he’s denying, then he’s running pick-and-rolls. Then he’s cutting, then he’s scoring. You know what type of shape you have to be in to play like Peyton Siva and Russ Smith do?” Russ Sr. certainly does, especially since he helped his son’s development along with the legendary Jack Curran, Russ Smith’s coach at Archbishop Molloy High School. Curry, 82, died March 14. Big Russ said the folks in his barber shop, which has mementoes of his son’s achievements all over the place, definitely appreciate how he’s playing. The shop figures to be a hub of activity again this weekend, when the community gathers to discuss any range of topics and especially Smith, who believes that success will bring its own recognition. samoa news, Thursday, March 28, 2013 Page B3 Where it’s at in American Samoa Charlotte Bobcats’ Gerald Henderson, left, falls over Orlando Magic’s DeQuan Jones, bottom, as Jameer Nelson, right, defends during the first half of an NBA basketball game in Charlotte, (AP Photo/Chuck Burton) N.C., Wednesday, March 27, 2013. Heat’s winning streak ends at 27 in Chicago CHICAGO (AP) — The Miami Heat’s 27-game winning streak was snapped Wednesday night by the Chicago Bulls, who won 101-97 when a furious comeback by LeBron James and his teammates fell short. The Heat finished six games short of the record held by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers. Luol Deng scored 28 points, Carlos Boozer added 21 points and 17 rebounds, and the Bulls brought the Heat’s pursuit of the record to a screeching halt despite another big game from James. Miami’s superstar did all he could to keep the run going, scoring 32 points in a physical final few minutes that saw the MVP even collect a flagrant foul. The Heat hadn’t lost since the Pacers beat them in Indianapolis on Feb. 1. But after grinding out some close wins lately, including a rally from 27 down in Cleveland, they simply came up short down the stretch in this one. For the better part of two months, they were the NBA’s comeback kings. They erased seven double-digit deficits during the streak. They found themselves trailing in the fourth quarter 11 times, and won them all — except this one. SPURS 100, NUGGETS 99 SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Tim Duncan had 23 points and 14 rebounds and San Antonio escaped with a win over Denver when Nuggets veteran guard Andre Miller missed a short jumper at the buzzer. Danny Green added 20 points and Tony Parker had 18 points and 11 assists for the Spurs, who remained 1½ games ahead of Oklahoma City in the race for the top spot in the Western Conference. Kawhi Leonard chipped in with 11 points and Tiago Splitter had 10. JaVale McGee had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Wilson Chandler scored 15 points and Miller 14 for the Nuggets, whose reserves outscored their Spurs counterparts 59-18. Kenneth Faried and Danilo Gallinari added 12 points apiece and Andre Igoudala had 10. THUNDER 103, WIZARDS 80 OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Russell Westbrook scored 21 points and Kevin Durant had 20 to help Oklahoma City beat Washington. Kevin Martin added 18 points for the Thunder, who are 1½ games behind San Antonio for the top spot in the West. Washington had won its previous two games against Oklahoma City, winning the only meeting during the lockoutshortened 2011-12 season before stunning the Thunder 101-99 in Washington on Jan. 7. Wall, coming off 47 points in a win over Memphis, had 18 points and 12 assists for Washington but was 3-of-18 from the field. KNICKS 108, GRIZZLIES 101 NEW YORK (AP) — J.R. Smith scored 35 points, his second straight 30-point game, and New York withstood a furious rally to beat Memphis. Carmelo Anthony added 22 points and Iman Shumpert had 16 as the Knicks tied a season high with their sixth straight win. After trailing by as many as 30 early in the second half, the Grizzlies cut their deficit to 103-99 on Tony Allen’s two free throws with 33 seconds left. However, they got no closer as Raymond Felton, Smith and Anthony scored the game’s next five points at the free throw line. Mike Conley led Memphis with 26 points, Bayless had 24 and Allen had 18 points and 10 rebounds. CLIPPERS 105, HORNETS 91 NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Blake Griffin scored 19 points and Chris Paul added 16 points and nine assists to lead Los Angeles over New Orleans. Caron Butler and Jamal Crawford each scored 13 for the Clippers, who were playing one night after falling in overtime at Dallas. Chauncey Billups briefly returned from a right groin strain to score 11 points before leaving the game with the same injury. The Clippers opened up a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter and pulled even with Denver for the third-best record (49-23) in the West. Eric Gordon scored 24 and Anthony Davis had 19 points and nine rebounds for New Orleans. PACERS 100, ROCKETS 91 HOUSTON (AP) — Roy Hibbert scored a season-high 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Lance Stephenson added a season-high 21 points to lead Indiana to a victory over Houston. The Pacers never trailed and led by as many as 19 points. Houston made several runs, once cutting the deficit to four, but Indiana answered each time. The Central Division-leading Pacers weren’t back to full strength but got a boost from the return of Stephenson, who missed Indiana’s last game with a strained right hip flexor, and George Hill, also sidelined with a strained left groin. James Harden had 22 points and eight assists for the Rockets, whose winning streak was snapped at three games. NETS 111, BLAZERS 93 PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Reggie Evans grabbed a career-high 26 rebounds and matched his career high with 22 points, leading Brooklyn to a win over Portland. It was the Nets’ 20th road win of the season, matching a franchise best. Brook Lopez added 28 points for the Nets, who built a big lead early and stretched it to as many as 30 points. But the 6-foot-2-inch point guard spurned them all, and won’t be playing basketball anytime soon. Emery is just weeks away from starting a two-year Mormon mission to Germany. The Brigham Young University-bound Emery is not the first elite Mormon athlete to put his career on hold for a mission, but he is among the very first who will leave right after high school at 18 under new rules announced last fall by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. By lowering the minimum missionary age for men to 18, from 19, Emery and other Mormon college athletes can navigate around the cumbersome path generations of Mormon athletes who came before them had to maneuver. The age for women was dropped to 19, from 21. Until now, Mormon athletes had to play or redshirt for one year after high school until they turned 19. After a two-year hiatus, they come back to complete their careers. By being able to go on a mission first, Emery said he will start his BYU career more mature and with better leadership skills. “Two years is a long time to mature and really figure out who I am,” said the 18-yearold Emery. “This is a big bonus. You can go straight out and get those two years done and then you have four straight years in college.” The change in the minimum age, the first since 1960, already has sent ripples across Mormon culture, affecting college enrollments, and likely how young people date, marry and start families. The effects are most evident in Utah, where 1.9 million Mormons live and the home of the church’s worldwide headquarters. It completely alters the landscape for Mormon college athletes, giving them another option as they consider their own physical and mental maturity and try to optimize playing time. Five months after the surprise announcement from LDS officials, BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said it appears that most basketball players will go straight on a mission out of high school. The change will lead to some extra juggling of the roster at BYU in the coming years, but should reap long-term benefits for the Mormon-owned university in Provo, Utah. “The continuity of them coming in and being here for four or five consecutive years will hopefully help us manage our roster a lot better,” said Rose, BYU head coach since 2005. Though the church lowered the minimum age, LDS church leaders emphasized that each person should carefully assess his or her situation. That’s what BYU-bound Eric Mika did before he ultimately opted to stick to his original plan and play a year before going on mission at 19. Rose said Mika made a good decision. Not only will he have a chance to play right away with several BYU big men graduating, but he will benefit from another year of competition after sitting out his junior season due to having transferred high schools. For Emery, though, going early was an easy decision and one that Rose said will benefit him. BYU already has several talented guards on next year’s team, meaning playing time would have been difficult. After the announcement, Emery quickly set into motion a plan to graduate early. He’ll enter the Missionary Training Center on May 1, and head off to serve in Frankfurt, Germany, about six weeks later. That puts him back home in May of 2015 — six months before the start of basketball season. Under the old rules, the only athletes able to go on a mission straight out of high school were those who were already 19, meaning they almost always had August or September birthdays. That brought them back from their missions in the fall and made it difficult to get in basketball shape for the next season. Rose predicts most players will follow Emery’s lead and go in the spring, which should make the transition back into college basketball much smoother. Missionaries generally have one hour of physical activity built into their busy, daily schedules. But they can do more if they choose to wake up earlier. It’s up to the mission presidents how much somebody like Emery can play pickup basketball, though strenuous games that could lead to injury and compromise the goal of the mission are usually frowned upon. BYU sophomore Tyler Haws, for instance, played occasional pickup games while on his mission in the Philippines. Though young Mormon men are expected to serve missions, it is not required. Some high profile Mormon athletes, such as Jimmer Fredette and Steve Young, skipped missions. But Emery and Mika are committed to continuing family traditions. “Unless I’m scoring 40 points and getting 20 boards every game and going straight to the NBA, I don’t think I’ll skip out on a mission,” Mika says, jokingly. “It will be good both physically and mentally. It will get me in the right mode to just be ready to work every day. And hopefully I mature physically.” Joe Nilson, Emery’s Mormon stake president in Alpine, said Emery wouldn’t have been scorned had he chosen to skip a mission and play college basketball, serving the church as a role model in a high-profile position. “Here’s a young man who is literally at the top of his game and he could go to a lot of different colleges to play ball,” Nilson said. “And he’s made the decision that he wants to be a missionary for the church. That says a lot about the young man.” There are high hopes for the BYU careers of Emery and Mika. During their senior year, the duo teamed with junior shooting guard T.J. Haws to lead the Lone Peak Knights to a 26-1 record and atop the MaxPreps national rankings in what many considered one of the greatest seasons ever by a Utah prep team. After beating a host of national powerhouses around the country, Lone Peak doubled up Alta High School 72-39 in the 5A state championship game. The team garnered national attention, and all three stars are ranked in the top 50 of their respective recruiting classes. Mika is ranked as the nation’s 30th best player by ESPN and Emery is ranked 45th. Haws, who has already committed to BYU, is 39th in the class of 2014. Haws said he’s leaning toward going on mission straight out of high school though he has yet to make a final decision. Due to his epic high school career and the timing of the missionary age change, Emery is likely to become the poster athlete for this new option; with his career closely monitored to see if the new rule helped or hurt him. Emery acknowledges that it will be difficult to temporarily give up the game he’s loved since he was a toddler, but said he’s excited to see the world and preach the gospel. “I feel like going on a mission I’ll get blessed more — not only in basketball but for life as well,” Emery said. Champion Giants look for another “special season” SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Angel Pagan and Marco Scutaro made a pact over the winter as they weighed their baseball futures: They vowed to keep in touch during free agency. They did just that, and both landed right back where they thought they best belonged — with the World Series champion San Francisco Giants. Not a bad place to be lately. The Giants’ starting lineup features World Series MVP Pablo Sandoval, reigning NL MVP Buster Posey and, of course, the guy with a perfect game at the front of the rotation in Matt Cain. CEO Larry Baer, general manager Brian Sabean, manager Bruce Bochy and all their players realize just how rare it is to keep almost an entire roster together. Especially after a championship season. “I think that’s the best thing we have,” Pagan said. “The chemistry’s the same. The atmosphere’s going to be the same. The way we got along last year, it doesn’t get any better than that.” Sabean has kept his club intact, determined to make another special October run after capturing two World Series titles in the past three years. “When you get a good group that you can keep intact everybody involved is a little bit more comfortable to start a season,” Sabean said. “What’s interesting is a lot of these guys we didn’t have in the past in the organization and a lot of these guys we didn’t have for a whole year. It’ll be interesting to see how they all jell at the beginning of the season and carry it out through the whole season.” It started with bringing back lefty reliever Jeremy Affeldt on a three-year contract, then Pagan for four years. Scutaro, the NL championship MVP, reached agreement on his three-year deal a day after Pagan got his multiyear deal in December. There are so many key returners for the Giants, who pulled off remarkable rallies in the division series and NL championship series before a four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers to capture another improbable championship. “No question it’s a pretty big advantage,” Bochy said of the continuity. Pagan received a $40 million, four-year contract, Scutaro earned a $20 million, three-year deal and Affeldt came back on an $18 million, three-year contract. San Francisco even added a familiar face from the previous championship run from 2010, signing energetic outfielder Andres Torres as someone who can play all three positions. “He’s going to help us a lot, and hopefully he’s part of another championship team,” Pagan said of Torres, who was sent to the Mets in the trade that brought Pagan to San Francisco before last season. “That’s what we’re here for.” Scutaro, 37, hit .362 with three homers and 44 RBIs in 61 regular-season games with the Giants after he was acquired in a July 27 trade with Colorado. Hunter Pence, another midseason acquisition after being traded by the Phillies, is another reason the Giants were able to win six games last fall when facing elimination. “There are many different ways you can try to improve your team,” right-hander Ryan Vogelsong said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what this team can do for a full season.” The Giants came back from a 2-0 deficit to Cincinnati in the division series and then rallied from 3-1 down in the NLCS against the St. Louis Cardinals, who visit San Francisco for the Giants’ home opener. “It’s exciting, because we have the same team that won the World Series,” Sandoval said. “We know each other and we’re going to come here to defend. We don’t have to adjust to anything, just play our game. I hope all the guys stay healthy. If we’re healthy, and not hurt, I think everything’s going to be easy.” Sandoval, the Kung Fu Panda, batted .369 during the postseason with five doubles, six homers and 13 RBIs. That’s after he spent two stints on the DL last season and underwent surgery for a broken bone in his right hand. He’d already had the procedure on his left hand. “We got the hamate bone out of the way. There’s no way he can hurt that again with both hands, so that’s nice,” Bochy said. After ending last season as a reliever — and a reliable one at that — two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum is determined to redeem himself and prove his worth as a starter in a contract year. He cut his hair short, a new look as he starts anew. He worked out with a personal trainer during the offseason to add about 10 pounds of strength, and tweaked his mechanics. “I tried to use last year as a gauge and not really anything to try to focus on,” Lincecum said. “I know last year wasn’t where I wanted to be, so when I feel like my body’s in a right position and doing the things it needs to be, I’m going to get the success or at least what I want out of it.” Lincecum enters the last year of a $40.5 million, twoyear deal that pays him $22 million this season, yet he isn’t necessarily thinking about his future as much as rediscovering his dominant form of the past. He went 10-15 with a 5.18 ERA in 33 starts and 186 innings last season, his sixth in the majors. Then, Bochy moved The Freak to the bullpen for the postseason in a move that worked perfectly. Lincecum, who pitched and won the Game 5 World Series clincher at Texas in 2010, allowed one earned run on three hits with 17 strikeouts in 13 innings for an 0.69 ERA as a reliever during last season’s championship run. “We’re just looking for Timmy to pitch like the years that he had,” Bochy said. “He had great years with us throwing strikes and locating well.” Posey will look to build on his sensational comeback season. He surprised most everybody in his first year back after suffering season-ending leg and ankle injuries in a May 2011 collision at the plate. “We really didn’t know how much we could use him,” Bochy said. “With the job that he did winning the Most Valuable Player I’d say he exceeded what we thought we might have in Buster in 2012 coming off that injury. LAKERS 120, TIMBERWOLVES 117 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kobe Bryant had 31 points and seven assists in his first game filling in at small forward for injured Metta World Peace, leading Los Angeles over Minnesota. Dwight Howard had 25 points, 16 rebounds, five blocks and five steals, and Pau Gasol added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers, who had lost three in a row and were playing their first game without their defensive stopper. World Peace will have surgery on a torn meniscus on Thursday, leaving the Lakers to chase the playoffs without him. Nikola Pekovic had 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who have lost the last 22 meetings against the Lakers and haven’t beaten them since March 2007. CELTICS 93, CAVALIERS 92 CLEVELAND (AP) — Jeff Green scored 21 points and hit the winning layup at the buzzer, helping Boston snap a five-game losing streak with a win over Cleveland. Brandon Bass scored 22 points to lead the Celtics, who rallied from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to avoid matching their longest skid of the season. After Cleveland’s Alonzo Gee knocked the ball out of bounds with 2.1 seconds left, Green took an inbound pass from Avery Bradley at the top of the key, drove into the lane and scored over two defenders as time expired. Wayne Ellington had 16 points for Cleveland, which has lost six in a row to match a season high. 76ERS 100, BUCKS 92 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Spencer Hawes had 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, and Jrue Holiday and Damien Wilkins each scored 18 points to lead Philadelphia past Milwaukee. Thaddeus Young and Dorell Wright both scored 14 points for the Sixers, who returned from a 1-3 road trip to win their third straight game at home. Brandon Jennings was scoreless for Milwaukee and benched in the fourth quarter. Monta Ellis scored 29 points for the Bucks and Ersan Ilyasova had 13 points and 18 rebounds. The Sixers wasted an 18-point lead and needed a few big shots from long range in the fourth to make it a game. Wright, Holiday and Evan Turner each hit a 3-pointer to help the 76ers rally. JAZZ 103, SUNS 88 SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Al Jefferson and Gordon Hayward scored 25 points apiece and Utah beat Phoenix to stay within a game of the eighth-place Lakers in the Western Conference playoff race. Jefferson finished 12 of 23 from the field and also had nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals for Utah. The Jazz used a 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter and led by as many as 19 while outscoring Phoenix 56-32 in the paint. Wesley Johnson had 22 points and Luis Scola 20 to lead the Suns, who allowed Utah to shoot 52 percent in dropping their fourth straight. KINGS 105, WARRIORS 98 OAKLAND, Calif. Marcus Thornton scored 13 points off the bench and helped harass Stephen Curry to send Sacramento to its first road win against a team with a winning record all season. The Kings entered the game an NBA-worst 6-30 on the road. David Lee had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Curry finished with 17 points and 12 assists on a difficult shooting night for the Warriors point guard. Golden State (41-32) missed an opportunity to build its lead on seventh-place Houston (39-32), which remains a game back in the West. HAWKS 107, RAPTORS 88 TORONTO (AP) — Al Horford scored 26 points, Jeff Teague had 24 points and 13 assists and Atlanta clinched a playoff berth for the sixth straight season with a win over Toronto. Josh Smith added 19 points for the Hawks, who used a 16-0 run midway through the fourth to win for the 13th time in the last 15 meetings with the Raptors. Horford reached double digits for the 31st consecutive game, the second-longest streak of his career. He did it in 33 straight games in 2009-10. Jonas Valanciunas scored 19 points, and Rudy Gay had 15 points and matched a season best with 12 rebounds for the Raptors, who have lost four straight and 11 of 14. Walker did a little bit of everything, dishing out nine assists and grabbing seven rebounds as the Bobcats won for the fourth time in their last five home games. Tobias Harris had a career-high 29 points and nine rebounds, and rookie Kyle O’Quinn had a career-best 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Magic. (AP) — In three seasons, the Oregon Ducks have progressed over the array of post-season tournaments, from the CBI, to the NIT and now the NCAA. Dana Altman has guided Oregon over those three seasons of improvement. On Friday, the surprising 12th-seeded Ducks (28-8) will face top-seeded Louisville (31-5) in the round of 16 in Indianapolis. Altman couldn’t be prouder. “I’m excited but, man, it’s just great to get to see those guys in the locker room all fired up,” he said. “And for our fans that have waited for this. And for our state. It’s good.” The Nebraska native was hired by the Ducks in the spring of 2010 to replace Ernie Kent, who was dismissed after 13 seasons at his alma mater. Oregon went 16-16 in Kent’s final season. Altman had spent the previous 16 seasons at Creighton, finishing with a 327-176 record. He led the Bluejays to 11 consecutive 20-win seasons and 13 postseasons, including seven NCAA tournament appearances. His hiring ended a monthlong search during which several high-profile names — including Michigan State’s Tom Izzo and Minnesota’s Tubby Smith — were rumored to be on Oregon’s wish list. Missouri coach Mike Anderson said the Ducks approached him, but he turned down the job. At his introduction, Altman joked about the process. “You look at my wife, you look at me, I wasn’t her first choice either,” he said. At the time, Oregon basketball was at something of a turning point. The Ducks were about to open the $227 million Matthew Knight Arena, with its distinctive “forested” court. Oregon was also riding the success of its football team, which played in the BCS championship that year. Many fans expected basketball to have a national profile, too: The Ducks hadn’t been to the NCAA tournament since 2008, when they were ousted in the first round by Mississippi State. In Altman’s first season, Oregon finished 21-18 and went to the College Basketball Invitational tournament, beating his former team Creighton in a best-of-three championship. The next year, the Ducks were 24-10 and went to the NIT, losing in the quarterfinals to conference rival Washington. Going into this season, Oregon was selected to finish seventh in the Pac-12 by media members who cover the league. But then the Ducks got off to an 18-2 start and climbed to No. 10 in the AP poll. The team struggled some after losing freshman point guard Dominic Artis to a foot injury in January. Even after he returned, Oregon was stunned with losses in its final two games, at Utah and Colorado, which cost the team the league’s regular-season title. The losses also dropped the Ducks out of the rankings. Oregon finished 12-6 in the Pac-12 for a share of second place. But the conference tournament was another story. Johnathan Loyd, who stepped in when Artis went down with his injury, came off the bench to score a season-high 19 points and Oregon defeated UCLA 78-69 in the title game. The Ducks rode the momentum to Midwest Regional victories over fifth-seeded Oklahoma State and fourth-seeded St. Louis in San Jose, setting up Friday’s game against the Cardinals. Oregon became the first No. 12 seed to advance to the round of 16 since Richmond two years ago. “When we started the tournament I told the players I’ve been fortunate enough to be on teams — this is my 12th NCAA tournament as a head coach and as an assistant — and I was just as excited when they announced our name as I was for the first one when I was 27 years old,” Altman said. Since the NCAA expanded to 64 teams in 1985, Missouri is the only 12th-seeded team to advance to the round of eight, in 2002. Louisville, which made a surprising run to the Final Four as a No. 4 seed last year, capped a 10-game winning streak by defeating Syracuse in the Big East championship game. The Cardinals defeated 16th-seeded North Carolina A&T and eighth-seeded Colorado State to advance in the Midwest Region. Louisville is making its 39th overall NCAA appearance and 19th appearance in the round of 16. The Cardinals have won the national championship twice, in 1980 and 1986. Oregon has been to the NCAA tournament 11 times. The Ducks’ only championship was won by the storied Tall Firs team in 1939. Oregon is 2-1 all-time against the Cardinals, most recently taking two wins in a home-and-home series that started in the 2000-01 season. LeBron upset by what he thinks are flagrant fouls by TIM REYNOLDS, AP Basketball Writer LeBron James spoke out about the way he gets officiated on Wednesday night, saying he is starting to get concerned about how physical he believes some opponents are against him. James made the comments to reporters huddled around his locker in Chicago not long after he and the Miami Heat had their 27-game winning streak snapped, with the Bulls prevailing 10197. He cited two specific plays he thought merited flagrant fouls, one involving Kirk Hinrich in the first quarter and another by Taj Gibson late in the fourth. The only flagrant assessed in the game was one against James himself with 3:52 remaining, when the Heat were trying to mount a comeback. “I’m not sitting here crying about anything,” James said. “I play the game at a high level, I play with a lot of aggression, I understand that some of the plays are on the borderline of a basketball play or not. But sometimes, you know, I don’t know ... it’s frustrating.” Miami’s winning streak was the second-longest in NBA history, ending six games shy of matching the 33-game run set by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers. James came down 1-on-1 against Hinrich in the opening quarter, and the players collided. Hinrich may have been in position to actually draw an offensive foul on that play, but wrapped his arms around James’ back and appeared to pull him to the ground. Hinrich was called for a blocking foul. In the fourth, James worked his way through three defenders and was fouled. Referees originally called a flagrant-1 against Gibson, though after review downgraded it to only a common foul. So instead of Miami having two free throws and retaining possession — which could have been huge, given that they were trailing by nine with 4:02 remaining — James only got the two free throws. He and Heat coach Erik Spoelstra argued to no avail. So on the ensuing Chicago possession, James got a bit of costly revenge, ramming into Chicago’s Carlos Boozer as he attempted to fight through a pick. James was called for the flagrant-1, which was upheld after video review. Heat guard Dwyane Wade didn’t seem bothered that the 6-foot-8, 260-pound James chose to lash out. “I’m surprised he ain’t done it before,” Wade said. “A big guy like that, you don’t really want to see him really start trying to inflict pain on other people. He plays the game the right way. It’s unfortunate.” James often asks referees why he doesn’t get more calls, given that there often is some level of contact whenever he’s around the rim in particular. Wade likened how James gets officiated to the way Shaquille O’Neal was, in that sometimes isn’t always better to be bigger and stronger than just about everyone else. “It’s tough but that’s why he is who he is,” Wade said. “You have to deal with it. Tonight, he decided to get back a bit. I didn’t think it was that bad.” James’ comments will likely be at least reviewed by the league, which could also issue a fine for complaints about officiating. “I believe, and I know, that a lot of my fouls are not basketball plays,” James said. “First of all, Kirk Hinrich in the first quarter basically grabbed me with two hands and brought me to the ground. And the last one, Taj Gibson was able to collar me around my shoulder and bring me to the ground. “Those are not basketball plays. And it’s been happening all year. I’ve been able to keep my cool and try to tell Spo, ‘Let’s not worry about it too much,’ but it is getting to me a little bit.” Asian leader wants Europe to push for a winter WCup ZURICH (AP) — A candidate for president of Asian soccer’s governing body wants European leaders of the sport to urge FIFA to move the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to cooler winter months. Yousuf al-Serkal of the United Arab Emirates said Wednesday that influential power brokers in Europe could lead the debate, which has gone on since FIFA’s executive committee selected Qatar as the venue in December 2010. “Major clubs from Europe and also major football federations should seek with FIFA to move this competition from the summer,” Al-Serkal said in an interview with The Associated Press ahead of meeting FIFA President Sepp Blatter. “I think the decision should be taken now.” “It’s not only for the success of the competition,” Al-Serkal said, “but also for the health of the participants, and what about the fans?” Asian federations vote for the confederation president on May 2 and Al-Serkal is competing against Bahrain’s Sheik Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa and Thailand’s Worawi Makudi. Still, FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke recently suggested medical advice could be cited to justify a move to winter. samoa news, Thursday, March 28, 2013 Page B7 American Samoa Government DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION JOB ANNOUNCEMENT Job Title: Assistant Director-Teacher Quality Posting Date: March 19, 2013 Department Division: Education/Teacher Quality Closing Date: April 02, 2013 Type of Position: Full Time/Permanent Appointment Posting Type: Employment Opportunity/ Open to the Public Serial No.: 016-13 Announcement No.: 012-13 Pay Range and Salary Range: GS16/$25,012 - $55,172 NOTE: This is exempted from the freeze as per the Governor’s General Memorandum. A Washington lawyer representing the country said Iran is reviewing the decision and considering whether to appeal. The case has dragged on for three decades. Ohio teens released in Twitter threat case STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Two Ohio teens accused of making online threats against a rape victim have denied the charges and been released on house arrest. The two 16-year-old Jefferson County girls had been held in juvenile detention in Steubenville since their arrest last week. The girls entered the juvenile court equivalent of a not guilty plea Wednesday before Juvenile Judge Sam Kerr. Their attorneys had no comment. Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine says the girls posted threatening comments on Twitter on March 17, the day two high school football players were convicted of raping a 16-year-old West Virginia girl last summer. The case roiled the town of Steubenville and stirred widespread reaction online. DeWine’s office says the tweets threatened homicide and bodily harm against the rape victim. Third District Court of Appeal Senior Judge Alan R. Schwartz wrote that the adoption of a “paramour” or lover has no purpose and cannot be confirmed by a court. Forty-nine-year-old John Goodman founded the International Polo Club in Palm Beach. Last year he was sentenced to 16 years in prison for a fatal drunken-driving crash. A lawyer for the crash victim’s family says Goodman’s 2011 adoption of 42-year-old Heather Laruso Hutchins would shield his fortune. Goodman’s attorneys said he wouldn’t benefit from the adoption of his girlfriend of four years. The appellate court also ruled Goodman committed fraud by not giving enough notice of the adoption to the mother of his children. doctor suspected of killing patients SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s health ministry says a doctor is suspected of killing seven terminally ill patients in a southern Brazilian hospital. A ministry press officer says Virginia Helena Soares de Souza and seven assistants are suspected of injecting the patients with “drug cocktails” and of tampering with their respirators. The press officer declined to be identified because she was not authorized to comment on the case. Souza was arrested in Curitiba last month but released on bail a week ago pending the outcome of the investigation. The press officer says the Health Ministry is reviewing the medical records of 300 other patients that were under de Souza’s care. She did not provide details and did not say if they had died. Pa. man bagged Wal-Mart lot deer BLAIRSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — They say you can get almost anything at Wal-Mart. But the Pennsylvania Game Commission says one deer hunter took it too far. Forty-year-old Arcangelo Bianco Jr. is charged with reckless endangerment and hunting law violations for allegedly shooting across a highway to kill a 10-point buck he spotted in a WalMart parking lot in November. Defense attorney Jason Huska declined comment Wednesday on the specific allegations but says his client denies wrongdoing. Bianco faces a preliminary hearing May 1 on charges reported by the Indiana Gazette. Wildlife Conservation Officer Jack Lucas says Bianco fired several shots in the parking lot then retrieved the deer from the side of the highway opposite the store, about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh. Lucas says the buck is one of the nicest taken in the county in recent years. Ohio fire captain hit by car, thrown 30 feet DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio fire captain responding to a crash on an icy road has survived being struck by a vehicle and thrown 20 to 30 feet. Dayton fire Capt. Barry Cron was speaking to a victim of a crash on U.S. 35 before daybreak Tuesday as snow fell. Moments later, another vehicle lost control on the roadway and struck the first truck, which slammed into Cron. WDTN-TV reports that Dayton police Officer Jason Ward and two firefighters carried Cron away from the pileup. Ward says: “He raised his arm at one point, but he never said anything to me.” Cron was released from a hospital Wednesday night. The crash created a pileup that involved 12 vehicles. Snow and ice led to multiple crashes throughout the region Tuesday. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Foundation is now called The Memorial Foundation after paying $2.7 million to King’s children to use his likeness and quotes for the sculpture. Tricia Harris, former manager of the organization that ran the Martin Luther King Jr. estate, tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the terms of the relationship between the foundation and King’s children were not expected to extend beyond the group building the memorial. A representative for Martin Luther King III says he will not comment because it is a legal matter and Bernice King was unavailable for comment. The shootings happened between 5:40 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. Monday in Washtenaw County. Two were in Bridgewater Township and one was in Pittsfield Township, about 40 miles southwest of Detroit. There were no injuries. However, you missed a golden opportunity to remind parents that they are the parents, and because they are responsible for their child’s safety, THEY are in charge! What has happened to plain old “parenting”? Time and again, I see children make their own rules because the parents have shrugged off the responsibility of parenting. You should have told them to tell their child that if he won’t wear a helmet, his bike will be taken away until he does. -- BILL IN BARTLESVILLE, OKLA. DEAR BILL: You and many readers are right. I DID overlook the issue of parenting in my reply. Mea culpa! Read on: DEAR ABBY: Have “Overprotective Mom” ask her son if he thinks firefighters, fighter pilots, police officers and football players are “uncool.” They all wear helmets! -- JAMES IN HASTINGS, NEB. DEAR ABBY: Not wearing a bike helmet to be “cool” is knuckling under to peer pressure. Those parents should use this opportunity to explain peer pressure and its consequences to their son. He needs to understand that he must make decisions for himself, and his “friends” should accept him for who he is. He needs to learn to stand his ground and be who he wants to be despite what others think of him. He also needs to learn to make decisions that affect his life based on facts, and not follow the crowd. True friends will most often make the same sound decisions that he makes, or accept his decision without pressuring him. One other comment: Require the kid to wear a helmet or forfeit the right to ride a bike. It’s called “tough love” and although it is tough, it is also rewarding. More parents need to have sound, wellthought-out rules and stick to them. -- PARENT FIRST, FRIEND SECOND DEAR ABBY: Patients cannot be used as exhibits, even with the best of intentions. It would be unethical and also illegal under HIPAA laws. A better option would be to contact the injury prevention office at a local children’s hospital and ask for tips. If your readers don’t live near one, there are websites filled with helpful information. -- LAURIE IN DALLAS DEAR ABBY: It’s true that there is no state code law in Texas regarding bicycle helmets, but many municipalities, including Dallas, have ordinances that require riders to wear them. That mother should check her city code. -- CONCERNED IN TEXAS DEAR ABBY: “Overprotective” should let her son choose a “cool” helmet and be sure it’s fitted correctly. Going to a bike shop may be the best bet. Serious bikers are cool and will be supportive. The boy should select the style and color he wants and decorate it with hot stickers or whatever he wishes. If that doesn’t work, then take the bike away. It’s the kind of cause-and-effect discipline that really works. -- BARBARA IN RUMFORD, MAINE samoa news, Thursday, March 28, 2013 Page B15 Page B16 samoa news, Thursday, March 28, 2013 C M Y K C M Y K
