November was chosen because of its relationship to gratitude and thanksgiving, the foundation for understanding and living stewardship as “a way of life.” The theme for this year’s celebration, is “Make a Joyful Noise.” We understand stewardship as the grateful response of a Christian disciple who recognizes and receives God’s gifts and shares these gifts in love of God and neighbor. Pope Francis shares the following quotes reflecting on stewardship: • Let us try a little harder to take the first step and to become involved. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. The Lord gets involved and he involves his own, as he kneels to wash their feet. He tells his disciples: “You will be blessed if you do this” (Jn 13:17) • Evangelizers thus take on the “smell of the sheep” and the sheep are willing to hear their voice. (recognize and receive) • I prefer a church which is bruised, hurting, and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security. I do not want a church concerned with being at the center and then ends by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures. (sharing) • An evangelizer must never look like someone who has just come back from a funeral! Let us recover and deepen our enthusiasm, that “delightful and comforting joy of evangelizing, even when it is in tears that we must sow.” (grateful) What a profound Holy Father we have! One who not only speaks stewardship, but embodies it. As you read the bulletin, you will find several ways that parishioners of St. Mary and St. Francis Xavier share their gifts God entrusted to them.
