Each year physicians and staff at the Emergency
Department at the Bradley Memorial campus treat
more than 18,000 patients. From life threatening
emergencies to minor injuries, the department provides high-quality care that has earned numerous
accolades.
In addition to maintaining patient satisfaction scores
above the 95th percentile across the nation for the last
three quarters, more than 85 percent of patients are
seen by a health care provider within 30 minutes of
their arrival. In fact, half are seen in as little as 10
minutes.
The department is also recognized for its extremely
fast treatment time, and for the efficiency in which
providers make the decision to admit patients after
they arrive.
“We get patients in fast, and we are able to diagnose
and treat faster than most emergency departments,”
said Dr. Eric Hobert, medical director.
Dr. Hobert added that the department’s close
relationship with local EMS providers allows for
continuity of service in the Southington community.

Apple Harvest Festival
offers food and facts
The Hospital of Central Connecticut had two booths at
this year’s Southington Apple Harvest Festival. Booth
visitors learned about HOCC’s Bradley Memorial campus
services from staff volunteers and copies of the
hospital’s new Healthy Southington newsletter and
HealthEyou! magazine were available. Among volunteers
was Nicole Schoen-Kiewert, RN, Emergency Department,
pictured (at left) with a fair attendee. Schoen-Kiewert
also conducted blood pressure screenings.
Southington Surgery Center sees busy first month
The 22 surgeons practicing at the new Hartford
HealthCare Southington Surgery Center (SSC) have been
busy with patients over the last month, following the
center’s opening on Sept. 29. In its first month, the
center performed 87 surgical cases with patients
coming from over 25 towns across the state; this exceeds
the expected number of surgeries for the first month.
The center, located on the Bradley Memorial campus, is
a joint venture of The Hospital of Central Connecticut,
MidState Medical Center, and area physicians. It boasts
three sophisticated operating rooms, patient-friendly
pre- and post-operative bays with private changing
areas, and private exam rooms. Physicians are equipped

to treat a variety of conditions, including those of the
hand, shoulder, knee, foot and ankle, spine, and sportsrelated injuries.
“The Southington Surgery Center provides an important
and needed service in the community. We are seeing an
increase in outpatient orthopedic procedures nationwide and right here in Southington. We are thrilled
with its success,” said Cindy Russo, vice president of
operations, Hartford HealthCare. A ribbon cutting and
open house held in conjunction with the Southington
Chamber of Commerce is planned for Oct. 29.

“We interface with local EMS providers all the time
and work to enhance our quality and protocols,” said
Dr. Hobert, who also serves as medical director for
EMS in Southington.
The successes of the department in caring for the
community are no doubt a reflection of the staff’s
commitment and passion. “Our physicians are onsite
24 hours a day, along with physician assistants,
nurses, and technicians specially trained in emergency care. The people of Southington can count of us
