A2(L) Inward Investment Adviser for Energy, Environment and Infrastructure This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of the British Embassy in Tokyo in support of one of our core objectives: increasing Japanese investment into the UK’s Energy; Environment & Infrastructure sectors (EEI). The purpose of the British Embassy (BE) in Tokyo & British Consulate General (BCG) in Osaka is to promote the British Government’s prosperity, security and consular interests in Japan. UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) Japan is central to the first of these objectives: we support UK companies with practical and tailored advice on how to reach the opportunities in Japan; and we build strong relationships with potential Japanese Investors in order to persuade them that the UK is the destination of choice when investing overseas. Infrastructure is the life-blood of an economy, enabling economic growth and job creation. Japan is already one of the most important investors into UK energy & infrastructure, with Japanese companies already active in a range of sectors: offshore wind; gas; nuclear and rail. The British Government, through its UKTI network, is committed to increasing this investment flow. This job will work at the core of the team tasked with deepening the UK’s partnership with Japan and delivering critical investment into UK EEI sectors. The main objectives are to: Support & grow project-level investment into UK infrastructure projects; and Support and grow Foreign Direct Investment into UK Energy, Environment and Infrastructure sectors. Main Duties Work with the Infrastructure Investment Specialist to support the relationship management of investors into UK infrastructure; Support the Senior Investment Officer to increase the number quality of investments in the EEI sectors; Develop and maintain relationships with companies, including leading on some sub-sectors, to encourage UK investment and support investors in overcoming obstacles; Provide team support in areas such as: inward visits; client communications; data management with the UKTI client database; market intelligence; and handling investment cases. Requirements Essential Experience: The successful candidate will have at least 3 years in any of the following roles: relationship management; business advisory services; marketing; research; business development. Familiarity in working with both Japanese and Western businesses is essential in order to win credibility and ensure productive engagement. Desirable Experience: Private sector experience, particularly in the infrastructure sector on in an advisory role, would be beneficial to the role. Essential Skills: relationship management; strategic thinking; teamwork; communication; commercial acumen; fluency (written and spoken) in Japanese and English.); proficiency with Microsoft office. Language Requirements: Fluent-level Japanese (JLPT N1 or equivalent) and fluent business English is required (IELTS band 8.5 or above/TOEIC 850+ points). The candidate will be expected to meet the following competences, which will be tested at interview: Achieving commercial outcomes: Identifying opportunities, and providing effective, targeted support that delivers our commercial objectives. Seeing the big picture: Developing a comprehensive grasp of one’s work portfolio, and using that knowledge to tailor strategy and activities in order to deliver business objectives. Identifying synergies between business interests will be key to driving growth & value-add. Making effective decisions: Being able to assess different data-sets (including direct client engagement) to filter strong opportunities and recommend areas for targeted action. Leading and Communicating: Ability to communicate with confidence, in a logical and clear manner, and to develop good rapport with contacts. Collaborating & Partnering – effective teamwork to support the delivery of common objectives. Other Requirements: There will be some evening commitments, e.g. events and telephone calls with UK companies. The latter could be delivered flexibly through Skype or other mobile work or home infrastructure. Benefit package includes: Working hours: Monday to Friday, generally 0930-1800 with flexible working opportunities and occasional out of hours working required This job is being offered on a 1 year contract, subject to annual review Salary of JPY 323,000 per month with 1-month bonus equivalents payable in June and December (pro rata) (Note: Subject to tax status, this amount may be reduced.)
