he first ever Olympics in the South American continent began with a bang as Brazil showcased its
rich history and cultural heritage, combined with Rio’s
famous ‘Samba’ dance, as the 31st Olympic Games
was officially launched in Rio de Janeiro.
Though the legendary footballer Pele, Brazil’s
biggest sporting celebrity could not take part in
the ceremony and light the cauldron, there was
a subtle yet powerful message of global warming
plaguing the world in a simple but passionate opening ceremony.
Brazil’s Acting President Michel Temer declared open
the Games, in the presence of International Olympic
Committee chief Thomas Bach, who gave a lengthy
speech, and United Nations head, Ban-Ki Moon.
Led by its only individual gold medallist Abhinav
Bindra, who is in his swansong Olympics, as the flag
bearer, the Indian contingent entered the stadium as
95th country. In his record seventh Olympic appearance, tennis ace Leander Paes was seen waving at the
crowd, while the spotlight among the female members
fell on the likes of shuttlers Jwala
Gutta, Ashwini Ponappa and gymnast Dipa Karmakar.
Meanwhile, a Delhi court issued a non-bailable warrant
against liquor baron Vijay Mallya in a cheque bounce
case. Mallya is in London and has been evading arrest
in connection with default of huge loan amounts.

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 6 (PTI):
Brazil showcased its rich
history and cultural heritage,
combined with Rio’s famous
‘Samba’ dance, as the 31st
Olympic Games was officially
launched with a subtle yet
powerful message of global
warming plaguing the world in a
simple but passionate opening
ceremony here.
Brazil organisers put their passion
for football aside and made climate
change and depletion of natural
resources as the central theme in a
thought-provoking nearly four-hour
long ceremony to signal the opening of the 17-day extravaganza
which will be competed by more
than 11,000 athletes from 209
countries, including India, and a
refugee Olympic team.
Brazil’s Acting President
Michel Temer declared open
Nations head, Ban-Ki Moon.
‘I declare the Rio Olympics
open, and celebrate the 31st
Olympic Games of the modern
era,’ Temer said to formally
signal the commencement of
competitions as the Rio night
sky was lit with fireworks emanating from Maracana Stadium.
After the formal declaration of
the Games, Brazilian 2004 Athens Olympics marathon bronze
winner Vanderlei de Lima lit the
Olympic cauldron after former
tennis world number one and
three-time French Open winner
Gustavo Kuerten brought the
torch into the arena to the thunderous applause of spectators.
Having witnessed many memorable clashes on its pitch, the
78,000-capacity Maracana Stadium today bore testimony to
Brazil’s effort to make the world
a better place, and how!
It was, in a way, putting
aside the trouble-torn
build up that the host
city faced from a Zika
virus threat, to slumping economy and cost
over-runs.

torch during the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic
Games at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.
The men’s hockey players

Amala Paul files for divorce
NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 6:
It’s confirmed now. The celebrity couple,
actress Amala Paul and filmmaker A L
Vijay, are getting separated. A divorce
petition was filed on behalf of the actress

This morning, papers for divorce
with mutual consent was filed by

The couple got married in a highprofile ceremony two years ago. Amala
Paul who had acted in few films directed
by Vijay fell in love with him and with
the blessings of elders in their families
got married.
However a few weeks, it was reported
that they were not seeing eye-to-eye
on various matters and are planning
separation with mutual consent.
Vijay has issued a statement recently
denying rumours and saying only he
and Amala know the truth of their relationship.
‘When Amala wanted to continue her
career in films, I supported her to the
best of my ability. And she continued
acting even after marriage. The newfound accusations that I or my family
were stopping her from work is completely untrue,’ he said in a statement.
‘The new-found accusations that me
or my family were stopping her from
work is completely untrue. The base
for any marital relationship is honesty
and trust. When that is breached, the
very existence of committed relationship
becomes meaningless.’
Amala Paul meanwhile is on a
signing spree. She has agreed to
act in the lead role in three movies
in Tamil now.

When question hour was going on
in the Assembly last week, a popular actor, who is a first time MLA,
sought the Speaker’s permission
to raise a supplementary question.
After he was given nod, he spoke
with all seriousness about a demand. But the House was in splits
even before he could complete the
query, as it was totally unrelated
to the main question (posed by
another MLA). The Speaker
asked him to place a
separate question and
seek answer from the
Minister concerned.

While travelling in the Metro from Koyambedu to Alandur, this
scribe lost his phone on the train. Unaware about it, he reached his
workplace. After sometime only he realised and tried calling his number.
The phone kept ringing but no one answered it.
After searching at several places, he finally made an enquiry at the
Koyambedu Metro station. One of the staff members went and checked
the lost and found area and found the phone there.
The scribe was grateful for their quick work but wondered why they did
not answer the call when the phone rang.
For that the staff answered, that it was their policy that they don’t pick
up calls from lost phones.

MILK ADULTERATION

q SC DIRECTION TO GOVERNMENT TO TAKE STRINGENT ACTION
M BALASUBRAMANI
Chennai, Aug 6:
Various milk dealers and milk producers associations have raised
their voice in support of the Supreme Court’s direction to the
government to take strong action against those involved
in milk adulteration. Experts explain the different types of
adulteration involved and suggest methods to prevent them.
State treasurer of the Tamilnadu Milk Producers Association, M Shankar: Adulteration is almost like giving poison to

children, the person involved in doing such an act can also

WHAT IS THE
QUANTITY?
Of the 1.45 crore litres of milk produced per day
in the State, only close to 30 lakh litres of milk
produced by Aavin is free from adulteration. The
remaining 1.15 crore litres is adulterated in one
form or the other. There are 65 brands and 35
companies producing milk. Each brand produces
four varieties of milk and each company
competes with the other not just in
quantity but also adulteration, say
sources.

Chennai, Aug 6:
Railways on Friday launched Rail
Geet, a 3-minute song with moving
trains visuals, to enthuse railwaymen
and establish a connect with general
public at large.
Composed by noted music director Shravan and sung by acclaimed
singers Udit Narayan and Kavita
Krishnamurti, the song ‘Indian Railways, we love Indian Railways’ will
be played now at the beginning of
every railway function.
‘Symbols in our country play a very
important role in motivating and inspiring people and this ‘Rail Geet’ will
be such a symbol for all railwaymen
and rail users. It will give them the
spirit of marching ahead and working
unitedly for the growth of Indian Railways,’ said Railway Minister Suresh
Prabhu after launching the Rail Geet
in New Delhi. Thanking all those involved in preparing the song, Prabhu
pointed out that even during freedom
struggles many songs and slogans
worked as vehicles of inspiration for
millions of people.
Referring to the hardwork being
done by the railwaymen in running the
huge railway network successfully,
Prabhu said that this song will reflect
the commitment and dedication of
lakhs of railway employees.

Starting with a short story of his own
life, Pinto said, ‘Marks do not matter, only talent matters. Everybody
has talent, it’s how we expose it that
matters.’ Secretary and correspondent,
Meena Muthiah, told the students, ‘We
are the change that we seek. Learn
new things to succeed in life. Attitude
is like a box of crayons; add colours to
your life.’ ‘Start today so that you can
lead tomorrow,’ she advised them.
College principal, P T Vijayshree,

WHAT NEWS TODAY PRINTS IS NEWS THAT COUNTS
A
Pointless!
ministerial meeting of the South Asian Association for
Regional Cooperation in Islamabad has ended, as usual, in
acrimony, with no tangible gain flowing from it. Given the ingrained
animosities and bitterness between the biggest of the eight-member
body, it would be foolhardy for anyone to expect real progress unless
India and Pakistan resolved their differences. With the Kashmirobsessed Pakistan staying true to type, the SAARC ministerial
meeting ending in a whimper should have caused no surprise.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who flew to Islamabad for
a day, said his piece, mincing no words when it came to pointing
the accusing finger at Pakistan for patronising anti-India terrorism,
and returned. His speech received little mention in the Pak media,
though it was not blacked out as originally reported. Rajnath used
some evocative phrases to make the point that Pakistan cannot
expect to make a success of a body meant for regional cooperation
if it failed in its duty to take effective action against State and nonState terrorists. One nation’s terrorists cannot be another memberState’s martyrs, the Home Minister said, with the recent events in
the region in view.
Nobody could have missed as to where his finger was pointed
at when he told SAARC Home Ministers that ‘…countries that
provide support, encouragement, give sanctuary and safe haven and
assistance to terrorists and terrorism must be isolated.’ Burhan Wani,
the young terrorist killed in an encounter recently in Kashmir, was
immediately declared a martyr by Pakistan which also condoled
his death and organised protest meetings in the Pakistan Occupied
Kashmir.
Even Pakistan’s national legislature passed a unanimous resolution
to condole his death, dubbing him a martyr. The Indian Home
Minister had these provocative actions in his mind when he directly
condemned support to terrorists by member-States. But the moot
question is to what purpose, if any, such meetings serve if Pakistan
refuses to mend its ways. A mere talking shop is what SAARC seems
to have become in the absence of any understanding between the
two South Asian neighbours locked in bitter recriminations almost
from their birth as separate nations back in 1947.
Though bilateral disputes are not part of the SAARC charter,
unfortunately the Indo-Pak rivalries and point-scoring always end up
vitiating the atmosphere of such meetings of the regional grouping.
As an idea, SAARC held much promise for bridging differences
between the eight member-States but almost from its inception
thirty-one years ago it has been dogged by bitter bilateral disputes.
Yet, India too cannot help but maintain diplomatic niceties. One
should not grudge Rajnath Singh taking the trouble of flying across
to Islamabad for delivering the usual homilies to a Pakistan which
is determinedly deaf to all good sense and international norms of
good conduct.

Tiny solar cells to
power personal devices
WASHINGTON:
Scientists have created high-performance, micro-scale solar cells
that outshine comparable devices
and could power personal devices
such as wearable medical sensors,
smartwatches and autofocusing
contact lenses.
Large, rooftop photovoltaic arrays
generate electricity from charges
moving vertically. The new, small
cells, developed by researchers at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison in
the US capture current from charges
moving side-to-side, or laterally.
They generate significantly more
energy than other sideways solar
systems. New-generation lateral solar cells promise
to be the next big thing
for compact devices because arranging electrodes
horizontally allows engineers t
o
sidestep a traditional solar cell fabrication process - the task of perfectly
aligning multiple layers of the cell’s
material atop one another.
‘From a fabrication point of view, it
is always going to be easier to make
side-by-side structures,’ said Hongrui
Jiang, professor at UW-Madison.
‘Top-down structures need to be
made in multiple steps and then
aligned, which is very challenging at
small scales,’ said Jiang.
Top-down photovoltaic cells are
made up of two electrodes surrounding a semiconducting material like
slices of bread around the meat in a
sandwich.
When light hits the top slice, charge
travels through the filling to the bottom
layer and creates electric current. In
the top-down arrangement, one layer
needs to do two jobs: It must let in
light and transmit charge.
Therefore, the material for one electrode in a typical solar cell must be
not only highly transparent, but also
electrically conductive. Very
few substances perform both
tasks well.
Instead of building its solar
cell sandwich one layer at a
time, researchers created a densely
packed, side-by-side array of miniature
electrodes on top of transparent glass.
The resulting structure separates
light-harvesting and charge-conducting functions between the two components. Existing top-of the-line lateral
new-generation solar cells convert
merely 1.8 per cent of incoming light

Rio: Golfing virus
returns to Olympics
he Rio Olympics will get underway tonight (Friday) with
typical fanfare and fireworks
a good two days after it actually got
underway without any fanfare and
fireworks.
No, I am not joking. The football matches are already on since
Wednesday, but usually it is a tradition of the Olympics to have the
inaugural ceremony after the Games
have been technically inaugurated.
And Rio is only sticking to it. But Rio
is also set to blaze new trails, and
this is the biggest Olympic Games
ever, especially as reflected in the
statistic that 30,000 journalists are
out there covering it. The host city has
ensured that there is an easy supply
of what such a huge contingent of
media personnel usually looks for:
Controversies and scandals.
Ahead of the Games, most of the
talk has been around Zika virus, crime
in Brazil, pollution in Guanabara Bay,
the alarming recession, the impeachment move against the President, the
displacement of poor people to build
facilities for the Games, and reading
all those bitter and troubling reports
has made some of us feel almost
wistful for the Commonwealth Games
in New Delhi. The real point is that
if something makes you look back
fondly at an event that was organised
and helmed by Suresh Kalmadi then
you know you are looking at the pits.
The pollution in Guanabara Bay
has been the biggest issue (“Rio

Hiroshima
anniversary
TOKYO:
Japan today marked 71 years
since the city of Hiroshima was
destroyed by a US atomic bomb,
as its mayor urged the world to
unite in abolishing nuclear weapons. The annual ceremony came
just months after Barack Obama
became the first sitting US president to visit the western Japanese
city, paying moving tribute to
victims of the devastating bomb.
American B-29 bomber Enola
Gay dropped its deadly payload,
dubbed ‘Little Boy’, on Hiroshima
at 8:15 am local time on 6 August
1945.
Much of the city was incinerated
by a wall of heat up to 4,000 C
(7,232 F) -- hot enough to melt
steel -- killing tens of thousands.
About 50,000 participants, including Prime Minister Shinzo
Abe and representatives of more
than 90 countries and regions,
observed a minute’s silence at the
exact time the atrocity occurred
some seven decades ago.
During the solemn ceremony,
Hiroshima mayor Kazumi Matsui
recalled the visit by Obama in
his peace declaration, citing the
president’s historic speech.
‘(His visit) was the proof that
Hiroshima’s strong wish not to
tolerate the ‘absolute evil’ was
shared by President Obama,’
he said.
The mayor urged the world to
take action towards the abolition
of ‘the ultimate form of inhumanity, united and with passion’.

if they decide. last-minute, to shift the

surely offer to host it on the Cooum

grateful for it. That is how bad the
situation is.
But it is also a fact that there are
many misconceptions surrounding
the Rio Games, one of which is of
course the belief
that Rio de Janeiro
is the capital city
of Brazil. This is
totally wrong. The
capital of Brazil is
--- you geography
nuts would doubtless know --- totally
some other city.
Let us face it, all Olympics have had
problems. But once the Games get
going all these things will be forgotten
and you can count on us journalists to
focus on sporting events, especially
the women’s beach volleyball. And
looking at the attire of the competitors
in this sport you will also probably
wonder whether the Olympic motto
has been modified to: Shorter, lesser,
hotter.
Another event that should get our
undivided attention is the Modern
Pentathlon, especially to figure out
what exactly is that sport. Nobody
really knows what events comprise
modern pentathlon, and I suspect
they just make them up on the fly.
So, it would seem, are the rules and
regulations of judo. The greatness
of this popular Olympic sport is that
even after watching a full bout you
can still never tell with any amount of
confidence as to who the winner is.
Rugby Sevens is being reintroduced in Rio Games (it was last
played in the 1924 Games) based
on its undoubted enormous popularity among the seven playing members of a team. Golf is another sport
that is making a comeback to the Olympics after a gap of 112 years, and
in a show of immense gratitude to
the IOC for this
gesture, many
of the top golfers
will not be seen
in action.
Seriously,
these golfers
have said that the fear of Zika virus
has forced them to stay back in
their respective places, which we
sincerely hope the ISIS terrorists
will target at the earliest. Okay, that
is an insensitive and cheap shot.
But when top golfers get all snooty
and make excuses and stay off
from the Olympics, we really need
to wonder whether we need golf at
all. But even without this, we have
to take a call on a sport that takes
less energy to play than when one
operates the telephone.
Now we get to the Indian participation, and as ever the nation has sent
a team of eager and enthusiastic
sportspersons, and, as ever, an
even more eager and enthusiastic
team of officials who can be counted
to come back with a rich haul of
foreign liquor and chocolates. The

two ‘discouraging’ and two expressing ‘no opinion’ on it.
Guterres, who had served as UN

he has announced his retirement,
he has chosen to stay in the game

India is predicted to win a total of

Right time for aerospace &
defence electronics market: Report
NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 6:
The market opportunity for aerospace and defence (A&D) electronics
in India is pegged to be at $70-72 billion in next 10-12 years, a report on
Friday said.
SUCCESS
SPEAKS SEVEN
According to a joint report by
IESA, Nasscom and Roland Berger, India is the seventh largest
(A&D) market globally.
‘India has needs to modernise
its A&D capital equipment base
by addressing obsolescence as
well as build additional capability
through new capital acquisition.
This requirement is also supplemented by additional budgetary
allocations of the Ministry of Home
Affairs for paramilitaries and state
police force requirements’, the
report said.
All of this results in India being
substantially attractive as an A&D
market, it added.
START, ACTION
‘We expect the government to support startups in the defence electronics industry in India. Defence manufacturing shifts globally has seen the
wave one from US to Japan, wave
two from Japan to Europe, wave
three from South East Asia to China
and want wave four to be from China
to India’, he added.
A BILLION DREAMS
‘The total market opportunity for
A&D electronics for India to ranges
from $70-72 billion in next 10-12
years’, the report said.
DIVIDE AND RULE
Of this, almost $53-54 billion
emanates from electronics spend
as part of platforms, while another
$17-18 billion of demand comes
from projects that are traditionally
called system-of-system projects
like Indian Army’s Project TCS,
BMS etc, it added.
EXCEL WITH
ELECTRONICS
‘The size of strategic electronics is
projected to grow to $72 billion from
the present $1.7 billion market and
this indicates immense potential
as there exists a significant gap
between supply and demand’, NITI
Aayog member V K Saraswat said.
SOFT IN SPACE
‘Though India is considered as a ‘soft power’ in the space, we are yet
to witness a single Indian company that develops strong end-to-end
Aerospace and Defence software solutions. As a result, we keep depending on foreign companies’, he added. He also said the return on
investments in the defence electronics industry in India is long term and
players need to have a long-term view.

PAES DENIES REPORTS
OF RIFT WITH BOPANNA
Ready to put best foot forward in his 7th Olympics
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 6 (PTI):
Tennis ace Leander Paes has
termed the reports that he had refused to share a room at the Olympic
Games Village here with his doubles
partner Rohan Bopanna as ‘false’ and
said that his timing of arrival at Rio
was according to plans and known
to the Indian tennis team.
Speculation of a rift between the
two men’s doubles players was
doing the rounds here and reports
have suggested that Paes refused
to share a room with Bopanna at
the Games Village. It
was also speculated that
Paes’ late arrival had
given the duo little time
for match parctice and
Bopanna had to make
other arrangements.
But Paes, who will be
playing in his seventh
straight Olympics, a first
in tennis, termed these reports as
‘baseless’ and ‘false’. He said that
the timing of his arrival and stay at
the Games Village was according to
plans and known to the team.
‘I am disappointed and feel sad by
the baseless suggestions in a section
of the media ... which accuse me of
not informing the tennis team about
my scheduled arrival in Rio,’ tweeted
the 43-year-old Paes.
‘There is also talk of
me refusing to share a
room with my doubles
partner Rohan Bopanna, which is false and
intended to unsettle our
preparations for the competition. I am staying in the
Games Village which was
the plan all along,’ he wrote.
‘Hope this clarifies and puts an
end to all fabricated stories and
allows me and the rest of the Indian
tennis contingent to concentrate on doing our best for
the nation. I would also like
to take this opportunity to
wish all my
colleagues in the Indian
contingent the very best for
this Rio Olympics,’ said Paes
who checked in at the Games
Village on Thursday evening.
India’s Chef-de-Mission Rakesh
Gupta clarified that Paes was always
going to stay alone.
‘He (Paes) was given a room and
there’s no controversy at all. For a
legend like him, Paes deserved a
separate room for himself,’ Gupta
said, explaining that the Indian ace
was playing a tournament in New York
and hence the delay in arrival here.
OMEGA’S LAP COUNTERS
FOR SWIMMERS
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 6 (PTI):
Omega has installed digital lap
counters at the bottom of the
swimming pool for the 800m and
1500m competitions in the Rio
Olympics.
One lap counter is included for
each lane - positioned on the opposite side of the finish - which
counts down the number of remaining laps for the competitor
swimming in that lane. Previously,
officials standing at the edge of the
pool would display the number of
remaining laps to the swimmer,
meaning that the competitor would
have to shift his or her attention
from the pool.
Sania misses opening ceremony

Sania Mirza who will represent
India in the mixed-doubles and
women’s doubles category, is
giving the Rio 2016 Olympics
ceremony a miss because her
campaign commences later

Sania tweeted about giving
the ceremony a miss and
assured that she’ll be in spirit
with the Indian contingent. India’s
leading tennis lady will pair up
Prarthana Thombare in doubles
and will share the court with Rohan
Bopanna in the mixed doubles
category. Active on the social media, Sania has been
sharing her Rio experience
on Instagram, Twitter and
Snapchat. In a latest tweet,
Sania tweeted a picture of

the only athlete on a hunt as most
are spending their free time on

claimed to have scalped special characters in the village.

IOA announces
Rs 50 lakh cash
award for goldies
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 6 (PTI):
The Indian Olympic Association
has announced a Rs 50 lakh cash
award for the gold medal winning
athlete in the Rio Olympics.
At a meeting with the managers
and coaches of the teams, the IOA
top brass comprising president N
Ramachandran and secretary general Rajeev Mehta, it was announced
that the national Olympic body for the
first time would award Rs 50 lakh for
a gold medal, Rs 30 lakh for silver
and Rs 20 lakh for bronze.
In addition, the coaches will be
awarded an equivalent of 50 per
cent of the amount that the athletes
receive. So, a gold-winning athlete
would receive Rs 50 lakh, while his
or her coach would receive Rs 25
lakh and so on. Ramachandran said,
‘this is the first time we are doing it
and we hope that this will form an
additional incentive for the athletes
and we are looking at a higher than
ever medal haul.’
Leander Paes will be
featuring in his seventh
straight Olympics, a
first in tennis.
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 6 (PTI):
Keen to start their Olympic campaign
on a winning note, Indian hockey
men’s captain PR Sreejesh has said
that his team would not be taking
Ireland lightly as they could be an
unpredictable side. Buoyed by some
strong performances in the run-up to
the Rio Games, Indian men’s team will
look to break their 36-year-long
medal jinx when they begin the
competition here in Group B
against Ireland, labelled as the
minnows in the competition.
‘The Irish can be unpredictable. They have been doing
well in the European Championships
and are sturdy and fast on the ball.
It won’t be an easy game to win and
we will need to go full force,’ Sreejesh
said on the eve of the match. This will
be Ireland’s first Olympic appearance
since 1908 when they had earned a
silver medal. Hence, going by the recent record, the Indian team, ranked
fifth in the FIH world rankings, would
start as favourites.
However, chief coach Roelant Oltmans does not want his wards to get
complacent. ‘We want to begin
on a winning note and carry
the momentum
forward in the
following group
s t a g e
matches. We
do not
want to undermine any team especially at an event like the Olympics
where every team wants to win,’ said
the chief coach. Ireland over the past
PR Sreejesh
have put up an inspired show beating
Malaysia and Pakistan at the 2015
FIH World League semis and with
Australia’s Oceania Cup win, the Irish
team had booked their berth to Rio.
Justin Gatlin
Gatlin‘hungry’
for Rio success
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 6 (AFP):
US sprinter Justin Gatlin said he
was ‘hungry’ for success as he
prepares to take on Usain Bolt for
what would be a highly controversial
second Olympic crown.
Gatlin has twice served doping
bans in his career, meaning a 100m
or 200m win against the popular Bolt
would be polarising -- especially after Russia’s athletics
team was suspended over a
drugs scandal.
Gatlin, 34, has set the two
fastest times this year and he
is a real threat to two-time defending
champion Bolt, whose build-up has
been troubled by a hamstring injury.
He said he was taking a simple
approach to what will be his third
Olympics, after he won the 100m in
2004, missed 2008 with a drugs ban
and returned to take bronze in 2012.
‘I’m just going to go out and do what
I need to do,’ he told reporters at the
US track and field team’s training
base near Copacabana.
‘This Olympics is going to be special. I know everyone’s going to bring
their A-game so I’ve got to make sure
I’m ready.’
When asked how he was feeling,
Gatlin told reporters: ‘Hungry.’
‘This is my third Olympics
so I’m bringing the fun,
care-free Justin Gatlin
from 2004 and the honoured-to-be-here Justin
Gatlin from 2012, kind of
mixed together,’ he said.
‘When I go out there I’m just going
to celebrate and have a great time.’
Gatlin set personal bests over both
100m and 200m last year, raising
eyebrows after Norwegian researchers found in 2014 that the effects of
performance-enhancing drugs could
last for decades.
A ‘phone shock’ for Sammy Bharath, Mukunth
Darren Sammy
WI sacks T20 captain
St John’s (Antigua and
Barbuda), Aug 6 (AFP):
Darren Sammy, who led
West Indies to the World
Twenty 20 title in 2012 and
2016, claimed that he has
been sacked as captain in a
30-second phone call from
the head of selectors.
The 32-year-old posted an
emotional video on his Facebook page where he said
his six-year spell in charge
had ended.
Sammy, lying shirtless
in his bed and with reggae music playing in the
background, also said he
had been dropped from the
squad. ‘I got a call yesterday,
it was probably 30 seconds,
from the chairman of selectors telling me that they’ve
reviewed the captaincy of
the Twenty20 team and I
won’t be captain anymore
and that my performances
have not merited selection
in the squad,’ Sammy said
in the video.
Sammy led the West Indies
to T20 victory in Sri Lanka
four years ago and again
earlier this year in India when
Carlos Brathwaite smashed
four sixes off the final over to
beat England. But there were
obvious signs of the strains
between him and the West
Indies Cricket Board when he
used his presentation speech
to attack his employers over
a lack of support.
His contribution to the victory was minimal -- he scored
eight runs and took just one
wicket.
‘Six years ago I was asked
to captain West Indies, a task
which I thought would be the
biggest challenge in my career, in my life,’ Sammy said.
‘A task which I knew would
be so difficult but I took it
head on. I embraced the
challenge, I embraced the
difficulty.

Big screen device for
traffic cops to book cases
NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 6:
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has
announced over 100 e-challan systems in the form of tablets with bigger
screens for the traffic police which
would make their job of booking
cases easier.
The e-challan system for collecting
spot fines was introduced around five
years back, to make the work easier
for the policemen. But the traffic
police say that the small screen echallan devices were a bit of a strain
as they had to check for vehicle details and fine amounts on the small
display screen.
Sources say that around 7,000 violation cases are booked by Chennai
traffic police every day. Around 300
machines were provided to the traffic
personnel, which allowed the police
to key in the vehicle number to get
all details pertaining to the owner’s
name, address, vehicle-make and
colour.
‘Although this system allowed us to
also see in an instant the previous
traffic violations committed by the
motorist, the small screens made
the task cumbersome,’ said a traffic
police officer.
This new, bigger version of echallan devices is said to be much
faster, compared to the old device,
and more such devices with added,
better features are to be issued to
the police soon.
‘Details of stolen vehicles have also
been fed into the tablets and we
will get an alert when we key in the
vehicle registration number. More
features are expected to be added
soon,’ said a police officer.

Lorry owners refuse to
carry burden of penalty
Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill proposes fines on transporter
M BALASUBRAMANI
Chennai, Aug 6:
Lorry owners association feels that
the increase in penalty amounts for
overloading, announced recently in
the Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill,
will not reduce offences: in fact, it will
lead to increase in bribery.
The Motor Vehicle Bill, which was
passed on 3 August, proposes
insertion of 28 new sections. The
amendments in it are mainly focused
on issues relating to improving road
safety and citizens’ ease and facilitation while dealing with the Transport
Department.
One of the proposals made in the
bill is to mandate the automated
fitness testing for transport vehicles with effect from 1 October
2018. The government is of the
opinion that this would reduce
corruption in the Transport Department, while at the same time,
improving road worthiness of a
vehicle. Penalties have also been
proposed for deliberate violation of
safety / environmental regulations.
Talking to News Today, Tamilandu Lorry Owners Federation
Association president, R Sugumar,
said it was not fair to levy penalty on the driver and the transport
agency alone in case of overloading. ‘The receiver and the sender
of the consignment should also be
fi ned. According to the Factories
Act, the licence and safety of the
vehicle in which
the consignment is checked
by the factory
that sends it. If
this is possible,
then why don’t
they check for
the capacity of
the vehicle and
then load them
accordingly?’ he
asked.
Sugumar suggested that if the
government was
really concerned
about the safety
of the people
then the root cause of this overloading should be found out instead of
going about levying penalties.
‘If a vehicle is caught with overlaod,
the fine should be imposed on the
sender, receiver and the transporter
as well, instead of dumping everything on the transporter. This will
ensure that the companies also
have a share in ensuring the safety
of the people. If the same company
is caught overloading again, then
their licence should be cancelled,’
Sugumar said.
He pointed out the recent survey
which states that compared to other
States, Tamilnadu ranks first in accidents and road deaths for which
overloaded trucks and damage on
highway are among the reasons.
‘Compared to neighbouring States,
Tamilnadu is carrying abnormal
excess of loads on highways. More
than 90 per cent transportation
vehicles are of abnormal overload
in the State; but only one or two
vehicles are caught and fi ned by
the authorities for the purpose of
record,’ he added.
Sugumar added that there are no
weighing machines in the 19 checkposts in the State to check the weight
of the vehicle entering and exiting
the Tamilnadu, and there are also no
weighing machines in most tollgates
though a recent court order makes
such machines mandatory.

Stakes claim to form govt in Gujarat
Ahmedabad, Aug 6:
Vijay Rupani, who was on Friday
nominated as the next Chief Minister
of Gujarat by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), today met Governor
OP Kohli to stake claim to form the
government.
Vijay Rupani along with Nitin Patel
- who will be the deputy Chief Minister - called on the Governor at the

formation.
The decision to appoint Rupani as
Chief Minister came as a major twist
as Patel was the frontrunner for the
post after the former had bowed out
from the race, saying he would like
to work for the party.
Yesterday, in a crucial meeting attended by BJP president Amit Shah

Rupani as the next Chief Minister
was announced.
BJP`s Central Observer Nitin Gadkari said after the meeting that the

battling to survive Sri Lanka’s spin

some resistance with their 51-run
fourth wicket partnership but both of

Gujarat Chief Minister-designate Vijay Rupani called on Governor
O P Kohli at Raj Bhavan today.
The BJP central leadership had already made it clear that a state MLA
would be assigned the job.
Anandiben Patel had tendered
her resignation to the Governor on
Wednesday. Governor OP Kohli had
asked her to continue as the care
taker Chief Minster till an alternate
arrangement was made.
Patel, who took charge as Gujarat`s
first woman Chief Minister after
Narendra Modi took charge as the
Prime Minister, citing age issues
had in her Facebook post earlier

Puducherry, Aug 6 (PTI):
Puducherry Chief Minister
V Narayanasamy today asserted that there were no difference of opinion between
his Ministry and Lt Governor
Kiran Bedi. ‘There is no clash
between the Lt Governor and
the Ministry,’ he said.
He said the LG and the Ministry
were functioning within the powers demarcated for them in the
Constitution. Hence, there were
no room for any difference of
opinion.
Addressing reporters here, the
Chief Minister said there was a
vast difference in the constitutional provisions governing the
administration of the National
Capital Territory of Delhi and the
Union Territory of Puducherry.
‘We have separate provision
in the Constitution relating to
Puducherry and the rules framed
under the Union Territories Act
1963 were also different and
hence one should not contend
that both Delhi and Puducherry
Union Territories were on equal
footing,’ he said.
Replying to a question whether
conferment of statehood for
Puducherry would clear the
scenario as far as powers for
elected Ministry were concerned,
he said his government and
Congress insisted that Puducherry should be granted special
category status.
Special category status
would ensure that the Centre
provided 90 per cent of the
budgetary requirements of
Puducherry by way of grants
while the remaining 10 per
cent could be mobilised by the
State government.
Asked about his reported warning to government employees
that they would be dismissed
if they come late, he said he
has never made any critical
comments against government
staff although his intention was
that the employees should be
punctual in turning up at their
workplace.
Khushbu Sundar, Suriya, Manobala,
Y Gee Mahendra and Sivakumar paid
last respects to the mortal remains of
Sundaram at his residence at T Nagar
here. The last rites are expected to
be performed later today.
‘I lost my elder brother’
Sundaram started his career as a
service boy in United
Amateur Artistes (UAA)
run by YG Parthasarathy
in 1956. That kindled his
interest in drama and
cinema. Speaking about
his association with Sundaram, Y Gee Mahendra
of UAA said, ‘I consider
him as my elder brother.
He had a long association with our drama troupe. He wrote
eight plays for us. Kannan Vandhan
was one among them, which was
later made as Gowravam. I had the
fortune of re-enacting Gowravam as
a stage play recently’.
‘He also did many television serials
for me. He was part of our family. I

am at loss over his demise’, he added.
‘He was a simple man’
Sundaram is an inspiration for all
of us. He was a simple man, who
loved to travel by public transport and

BRILLIANT BRAZIL ON SHOW
The Rio Olympics got off to a start with a
vibrant opening ceremony which saw leading
sportspersons including Spanish tennis ace
Rafael Nadal and Briton Andy Murray carry
the flag for their respective nations. The
participants were the cynosure and some
chose to take selfies while many were
proud to enter the Maracana stadium as
part of the country’s squads. Various
events were part of the programme
to entertain the audience.
Rio de Janeiro:
Martina Hingis has retired twice
and been hit with a doping suspension since she last played
the Olympics in 1996 as a precocious 15-year-old.
But after waiting 20 years to
return to the Games, the Swiss
star almost had her Rio dream
snatched away -- not once but
twice.
First,

A breakthrough for Iran:
First female flag-bearer
Archer Zahra Nemati eyes yellow metal in Rio
Zahra Nemati
Rio de Janeiro:
When archer Zahra Nemati carried
the Iranian flag into the Maracana
Stadium on Friday, she broke new
ground for the Islamic country.
Never before had a woman led Iran’s
team into the parade of athletes in an
Olympic opening ceremony.
In Iran, where strict interpretations of
Islamic norms are enforced, female
fans are traditionally barred from attending male-only sporting events.
Arriving in the stadium in a wheelchair, wearing a green head cover-
ing, Nemati was the flag-bearer for
a team made up overwhelmingly of
men.
It’s quite a way for the 31-year-old
Nemati to make her mark on her first
Olympics.
She had hoped to represent Iran at
the Olympics much earlier in life and
in taekwondo rather than archery.
A car accident as a teenager set the
former black belt on a new sporting
path after leaving her paralysed.
She picked up archery a few years
later simply because, ‘I wanted to do
some sport.’
Unlike most athletes, Nemati won’t
just be spending part of August in Rio
de Janeiro. She’ll be pulling double
duty and will be back next month
for the Paralympics, where she’s
the defending gold medalist in the
individual recurve W1/W2.
Nemati started her ambitious journey to a first Olympic medal ahead
of Friday’s opening ceremony during archery’s qualifying round at the
Sambadrome.
She shot 72 arrows and accumulated a score of 609, good
for 49th position. The results
from the qualifying round
are used determine the
seedings for the bracketed tournament next
week.
At the 2012
London Paral ympics, she captured
gold to become
the first
woman from
Iran to do
so, according to the
Rio Olympics website.
Nemati
earned her spot
at both the
Olympics and
Paralympics
with a strong
performance at the 2015 Asian
Championships and Asian Para
Championships.
‘I had a dream to be in the Olympics
as I was doing taekwondo before my
accident,’ she said. ‘Now, this dream
came true through archery.’

Martina Hingis
uled partner in the mixed doubles, withdrew with injury and a
day later Belinda Bencic, her doubles teammate, also pulled out.
In a last-minute solution, where
Vitorija Golubic dropped out of
the team, Hingis was paired with
Timea Bacsinszky.
‘When Roger agreed to play
with me I was very excited but in
our sport you never know what’s
going to happen next week,’ said
Hingis who only arrived in Rio on
Thursday afternoon.
‘Of course, when the phone call
came I was little prepared as it’s
never easy to say no to something you have looked forward to.
‘But we were both equally disappointed that we couldn’t compete
in the Olympic Games together.
I was looking forward to bringing
home a medal.
‘I have another chance. I
never go on the court thinking I am going to lose and I
am here to compete hard
with Timea,’ added Hingis,
now a 35-year-old veteran
of the tour.
Back in the 1996 Olympics, Hingis lost in the second round of the singles
and reached the quarterfinals of the doubles with
Patty Schnyder.
She went onto establish herself as
the leading player of
her generation, winning five Grand Slam
singles titles between
1997 and 1999.
But she retired in
2003 with a knee injury before returning
to the tour in 2006.
One year later, she
was into her second
retirement when she
was hit with a twoyear doping suspension having tested
positive for cocaine
at Wimbledon.
